Breathe is a well-written story about forgiveness and redemption. It's thoughtful. It's sad. Yet very hopeful.
Dear Lyncoln,
I know you are a good guy, Lync. You have a kind and generous heart. What happened destroyed you as much as it did Jay, his family and Katie's family. It is reasonable that you feel ashamed, and it's good to recognize what wrong you did. However, it was an accident, and we all know you didn't do it on purpose. Your sister's husband was beating her and on that fateful night she called you for help. It's kinda understandable that you were upset. Since your sole purpose was to save her, I get it that your head was elsewhere. You didn't pay enough attention when you were driving. And Jay's wife, Katie, died.
Can't breathe.
You lost all your money you earned from your racing. You lost your home, your partner, your career. You paid for your mistake, Lync. And now someone is threatening you. Someone wants you to suffer. I was so saddened to read that the bad guy That said, I knew you would protect your family, Lyncoln. You're a man who takes care of those you love.
Breathing slowly.
I think I know how you feel. Not waking up with someone you love, lying in bed, talking, making love, kissing, caressing. Sometimes you can't fight fate, my dearest. You met Jay and you didn't know who he was. Neither did Jay. As it is, you are afraid that you're not the right choice for him. But don't be. Yes, he deserves to be happy, but let him make his own choice, please. Even though you will always remind him of the pain and loss and heartache he had to endure, you are the man for Jay. It comes as no revelation at all that Jay feels confused because you are the first guy he had sex with. Admittedly, he fantasized about men before he was married, however, this is so new to him. Jay feels a strong attraction to you. It's astounding and yet impossible. Let me tell you, Lync, Katie would have wanted for Jay to be happy; to go on living. And you two make each other feel good. You are two human beings worth living and breathing. I know Katie would like you. Having said that, happiness takes work. Ultimately you have to decide to make your life what you want it to be. Well, and when you make up your mind, just go for it!

I'm glad that you told Jay he should let himself miss Katie. Talk about her. He has a right to grieve; to be angry or lonely. If you keep remembering a loved one, it'll get easier to keep close to this person. She's gone but not forgotten. Now let me please tell you something very important. You need to forgive yourself; you need to let go of all your grief and sorrow. Start to breathe again. Live again. Believe me, Lync, you are so worth it.

Tell your creator that I really liked your story. Very much so. The blurb sounded intriguing enough yet a little bit farfetched as well. Would this work in real life too? I don't know. But I know that your creator pulled it off and I like the outcome. The characters are well drawn and complex. You and Jay are very likable. Further, I was quite mesmerized by the family dynamic and interaction. Breathe is a well-written story that kept me turning the pages. I appreciated the plot and the slight suspense factor enhanced your story nicely. Your men lovin' was pretty hot too; well, it was not the steamiest I've ever read but it was worthy of my attention though. *grin* One of the best aspects of your story is the book title and the term breathe in general. The term breathe is in perfect correlation to many parts of the story. Moreover, it inevitably establishes the perfect connection between protagonists, plot, and certain deeds. Long story short: it's a perfect symbiosis.
What I didn't like
I don't think I have to elaborate what happened afterwards. It was messy.
Your story is not one I enjoyed to read, Lync, because the topic is too serious and there's quite a bit of angst thrown into the plot. However, in the end I was satisfied and I felt happy for you. Breathe left me hopeful and I closed your book with a smile on my face.
Against all odds live your dream, enjoy your future and be happy. You need it. You deserve it.

This book took me forever to read. And I'm not sure why. It wasn't that long.
But I liked it. Mostly. It was definitely different and not a premise I have read in MM.
The writing was really good, which I think took the story a long way. But if I really really think about it not a lot happened.
Lincoln and Jay definitely fall in love under rather strange circumstances.
I'd like to believe that something like this could happen. What happened was a true tragedy.
I also have to question whether the whole suspense part of the book was needed. I literally spent the whole book going back and forth as to who I thought was responsible for the notes and threats. Every chapter I would change my mind.
Other than that...and Lincoln and Jack going back and forth about whether they could ever be together given their circumstances....not much else happened.
Yet I kept reading on.
Forgive my ramblings. Ultimately if you are looking for something different, with some really good steam, heavier undertones, great writing, that might take you 3x as long to read as it should...give this one a go! :)

Loved it, though it might be hard to believe that these two guys would hook up in normal circumstances, not that there is anything normal about their situation. Did I mention the angst, drama and heartbreak? There's plenty of it going around, it's emotionally draining, so pace yourself and suck it up, its worth it.
Jay and Lincoln have no idea what they are both about to unleash when they meet, the past is about to blow up in their faces. After finding out who Linc really is, Jay has a lot to think about, his attraction and those pesky, overwhelming feelings of guilt keep getting in the way. Complicating things further, Lincoln starts receiving hate mail and threats against his family. Hmm figuring out who the bad guy is, isn't easy. I was kept on my toes. Yes, I know I am pretty lame at figuring out these mysteries but honestly this time it was a tricky business.
I love and need happy, I got it in the end. A wonderful romance about love, second chances and learning to forgive. Now I am off to read What You Do To Me a free epilogue, which should be sweet.

"Breathe" was an amazing read for me! Very nicely done Sloan Parker!
"Breathe" is about two men and their experiences following a horrific tragedy and their individual journeys towards forgiveness. Surprisingly, I read a M/F book with a very similar premise only a few months ago. I'll put the other book's name in spoiler tags because the fact that the guy was involved in the girl's accident is a huge plot twist . However, this book blows that one out of the water. This book is just eons superior.
I didn't mind that the plot was pretty far-fetched. The chemistry between the guys was so intense and their angst was so visceral that I overlooked most other little flaws in the book. The author just blew me away with how well she portrayed Linc and Jay. I also have a thing for gay first-timers and so this really hit my sweet spot. I really connected with the characters and understood where they were coming from.
My only issue is that I thought the ending was a bit overly dramatic. I knew that the book was leading up to something like that but I wanted something a bit more subtle and restrained.

Sloan Parker and I are breaking up. I liked this book better than More but not that much better.
It started off promising, and the premise (falling in love with the person who took something from you) was interesting. However, I didn't feel that the relationship between Jay and Lincoln developed organically or realistically. I didn't learn anything about the MCs other than their shared tragedy, and I kept questioning what they really had in common besides passion (and even that felt flat).
Why the dramatic running around and breaking into houses while playing detective? Who really does that?
I also get extra annoyed when a story serves up a mystery that can't be solved because there are no real clues, just red herrings. One could guess who the "bad guy" here is, but it would be just that: a guess.
I felt bad for both MCs, but they both changed their mind a lot with no real motivation. There was too much focus on Jay's wife, who was painted in such rosy colors I came to sort of loathe her (not an appropriate emotion to feel for a dead woman), as well as Jay's relationship with his wife vs. Jay's relationship with Lincoln. If Jay reacted so strongly to Lincoln, he was clearly gay, so I kept thinking that sooner or later his marriage would have fallen apart anyway, but Jay's sexuality wasn't really explored.
The ending was also just crazy silly, too convoluted and melodramatic, with not enough focus on the HEA. These two just needed to get the hell out of dodge and move out of town already.

OMG the angst. I'm an angst loving girl but there is a limit and this book reached it.
"I love you, I need you but I will ruin your life and I don't deserve a man as kind as you. I must push you away and then a moment later, pull you back in. I can't resist. Your touches make me feel again but I don't deserve them. I deserve to wallow in a pool of self-pity and drink myself to death. I must leave you alone. You're better off that way. Wait, I need you back. Get those hot lips over here!"
Arrrrggh, my heart just exploded. I can't take it. These two guys have a life filled to the brim with melodrama. They're good guys, they're hot together, they're truly lovely people but they can't past their grief and guilt. It was so emotionally wrenching I don't know how I got through it all but I did. I recommend only to those with an inhuman tolerance for drama.

So another successful buddy read with my great friends Mark, Tina, Gina and Bev and another 5 star rating from me.
My first thoughts before reading was how can someone make a romance between a man whose wife is killed in a in a dreadful car accident fall in love with the man who was the cause of that accident? I couldn't see how it could work at all but I hold my hands up because Sloan Parker took a sensitive subject that could have been a complete mess and made it meld so well that by the finish I couldn't imagine these two damaged men never having been a couple.
From the first time they spy each other outside the bar to the first sexual liaison outside of it before they know who each other are, through to the brilliant ending I was totally immersed in every aspect of the story. When Lincoln and Jay were together the sexual tension they created was combustible and the love scenes incendiary. To team them up to find out who was targeting Lincoln and his family was a perfect ruse to allow them to get closer and you could see over time that in a way, only the two of them could truly ease each others pain, despite the reactions of others outside their relationship. All the supporting characters added an extra depth to the story even though some of them had me gnashing my teeth.
The actual mystery of who it is threatening their relationship is extremely skilfully done, loads of angry family members who are suitably nasty enough to draw you to them as the culprit and tons of red herrings that completely turn all your preconceptions upside down, then theres the OMG moments that hook you in and keep you on the edge of your seat till the nail biting conclusion. I absolutely loved every moment of it and pretty much devoured it in a couple of sittings. There were a few questions but I let those go and didn't let them interfere because I got lost in the book and to be honest in all stories its easy to pick holes. Sometimes its worth invoking poetic licence and just letting the story flow. This did and its now a do not delete for fear of death story on my trusty kindle! Lincoln and Jay you are now in my most favourite m/m couples lists and I'll definitely be reading this again. Totally and utterly satisfied!

Well gee... *kicks dirt*...I don't know...I know everyone loved this book, but, um...I really struggled with it.
It starts off with so much potential. How do you not jump into a story about a man who loses his beloved wife in a car accident and then falls for the man that was the driver of the other car? Oh the possibilities. And yes, a lot of the grief and the guilt and the struggle for everyone involved to move on were here in this story. And throw in a gay-sex virgin and a host of peripheral storylines that felt the promise of being emotionally pulling, and you have the recipe for a winner. Right? Well, for a lot of readers, yes. For me? .......
I wanted to punch this book in the face.
I was just so TIRED of the repetitive "this can never happen again" *fuck like rabbits* "this can never happen again" *fuck like rabbits* "too bad this can never happen again"...and on and on and on.
I think Lincoln was a sympathetic enough character. I liked how the author didn't take the easy way out with his life and the accident and his guilt over it all. Bouncing back and learning to LIVE again after a tragic loss at your hands must be difficult and this felt very REAL the way the author put Lincoln's life on page.
I wanted to feel this same genuine emotion for Jay, the one who lost the love of his life in this accident. But, gosh...Jay...drove me nuts. I get that he's torn and there's overwhelming guilt and his family was crazy. It just got really old after awhile and I started to not believe this character anymore.
I think if this book merely focused on the odd relationship between the two and explored their attraction and growing feelings more, I'd have been ok with it. But the story took a weird turn into some vigilante justice/revenge plotline that I was so aggravated with...I was pretty much fuming by the end. I almost couldn't stand to finish it, the details THAT outrageous and unbelievable.
This book just didn't work for me...even writing this review a few days later, I'm starting to get angry. HA! Sorry...I think more than anything, I'm upset about the wasted potential of what could've been a much better book.

Buddy Read with Gina, Tina, Mark and Macky....thank you. 4 stars for this from me
Well, there were things that I loved about this book, and then there were things that I couldn't quite understand , but as others have done long reviews, this will be a shortie.
The two MC's Lincoln and Jay were extremely hot together...spontaneous combustion-type heat between the two, and I have to say the sex scenes (apart from the initial blow job) were very well written, and I really enjoyed reading them
. There was lots of angst
of course, but also guilt, heartbreak, pain, anger and of course, not forgetting the tragic circumstances which brought the two guys together in the first place.There is also a lot of love, both love for their respective families and the love that they find together
, and then there is hate, and I'm not going to name the people in question, but there were some pretty nasty things going on in the background. Oh, and I think someone's mum needs to pay a visit to the local loony bin
!!

Not a perfect book, but despite the overdose of drama in spots, the age gap (which I honestly didn't really notice), and the speed with which the relationship developed I liked this story. I think because, despite the angst, it was ultimately a story about forgiveness, acceptance, moving on, and learning to live with those things that cannot be changed. In the end it is a hopeful story in a very real, and honest way.

This book was all kinds of awesome!
Yeah, there was tons of angst, angst and more angst. But not the bad kind. No cheating! This was all about guilt and grief and forgiveness and moving forward. Most importantly it was about getting a second chance at life and love.
From the outside, Jay and Lincoln were absolutely wrong for each other. But in truth, they were right. Absolutely right for each other. It was the only way either of them would ever heal.
Their passion was intense and the sex was some of the hottest I've read in like forever! And there was A LOT of sex, but I felt like each scene was critical and propelled the story.
I must warn that if you are a crier, which I'm not, you will probably shed some tears with this story. This one line totally made me cry:

Yeah, there was tons of angst, angst and more angst. But not the bad kind. No cheating! This was all about guilt and grief and forgiveness and moving forward. Most importantly it was about getting a second chance at life and love.
From the outside, Jay and Lincoln were absolutely wrong for each other. But in truth, they were right. Absolutely right for each other. It was the only way either of them would ever heal.

Breathe isn't a pretty romance. It's quite dark, has some plot twists and some angst and suspense.
After a fatal accident Linc has lost his home, his job and his partner. A year later he realizes he needs to move on. He meets a man who arouses a passion he thought he'd never find. But someone decides Lincoln needs to suffer more than he already has...
Jay is surrounded by grief and misery until he finally gives in to his sexual fantasies about being with another guy. Realizing he's ended up in the arms of the man who caused his wife's accident, he tries to pull away.
On top of the labyrinth of their new relationship Jay and Linc have insecurities and a deep sense of guilt to overcome. What is touching though, is the progress they both make. It's really beautiful to read how they finally move on and discover their love for each other.
The story is also about the people closely involved with Jay and Linc, each with their problems, making everything more realistic. With one exception: I surely could have gone without Jay's mother who is just annoying. :)

I was up into the wee hours of the night a few nights ago finishing this book. I tried to go to sleep, really, I did, but Jake and Linc wouldn't let me!
Jacob Miller is 22 years old and a widower. Lincoln McCaw has been recently released from the county jail after spending six months locked away for vehicular manslaughter. They're a very unlikely pair. Jacob loved his wife, Katie, and Lincoln is responsible for her death. It was an accident, sure, but that doesn't change the fact that he's the reason she is no longer breathing. When the two first meet, they don't know who the other is, not really. They know they're attracted to one another and that's about it, but when Jake finds out who Linc really is, he has a hard time equating the hate he feels for the person responsible for the accident that killed his wife and the slowly developing feelings he has for the sweet man he has just met.
Then, Jake learns that Linc is being threatened. Someone is sending him hate mail and threatening his family and that someone is probably a person Jake cares about, but in order to make the threats stop, they must first figure out who the perpetrator is.
I had no idea until about 70% of the way through the book who was responsible for the threats directed at Lincoln and even then I wasn't entirely sure. The author did an excellent job at keeping me guessing!
This was a captivating romance/mystery that left me feeling happy, with a big grin plastered on my face. It's about a mystery that needs to be solved, yes, but it's also about love and forgiveness. And as my daughter reminds me often when she spills her juice on the floor, "sometimes accidents happen," then it's no one's fault really, it's just life.
Now, my only question is when I can expect another book out by this author, because I want more!

Fact is stranger than fiction. This story touched based for me and dealt with some very emotional aspects. I felt drawn into their world from the very beginning and the author's style felt comfortable and smooth making it a compelling, non-stop read. The plot development and many threads was well handled and left me wanting more at the end.
So, now to the story. Jay and Lincoln, two guys on opposite ends but joined together by a common person who although in death brings them together. Jay suffering from grief and loss. Lincoln suffering from guilt and blame. Two sides of an emotional coin. This immense suffering brings them together and a relationship evolves where they find the answer to their suffering in each others arms. Jay finding love and happiness once more. Lincoln finding forgiveness and absolution. This makes for an intense love story with all the trials and tribulations.
Running parallel to their relationship is the thriller part of the story which also builds in intensity at the same rate as their relationship, lots of red herrings and had me guessing right to the end. The end was exciting and harrowing but left me also happy that after all these guys had weathered together, there's not much left that will now tear them apart.
If I felt inclined to half stars, I would give 4.5 due to one little thing. I was never really convinced that when they first got together they didn't realise who they were. After the fatal accident of Katie couldn't quite believe that Jay had never seen a picture of Lincoln in the media even if had never gone to the trial. Found this a little unbelievable. However, the story and powerful writing clinched the deal and that's why I'm rounding up to five.
I loved this book on a level that it is also a lesson for life. Accidents happen and they're never intentional, no matter how bad, nobody is ever really to blame. Forgiveness is important as is not always having to find a scape goat. A lot of strength can be drawn from this. We can't change the past, so it's not productive to dwell on these things but it is sometimes more important to move on, think ahead and try to be positive.

I have always been a fan of love story that is slightly complicated -- because it provides good drama and can make readers emotionally involved. This story provides a very good start to that theme.
The circumstance that brings Lincoln and Jay together is a tragedy -- one that takes one life. Here we have two guys, who might never cross path if not for the accident; but now after they do, both recognize each other's soul. Lincoln and Jay have their own version of grief ... and it's beautiful to read how they finally able to let go, to move on, by finding one another.
The tension from the threats targeted for Lincoln adds more drama, ALTHOUGH, I think the story can work without it. In some sense, these threats sort of prolong the outcome; I find myself skimming some parts just to get to the next chapter. I wonder if things like this happen in real life.
Oh god this was a really rollercoaster of tension, angst, love. Both character are broken, just looking to feel good with each other but were so many thing between them it kind of scary me, sometimes i think that this would not have a happy ending, a ending that both of them deserve.
The plot wasn't really difficult to follow, and i almost guess everything, but that didn't made me enjoy this less, the last 15% got me really bad.
In general a good story, creative and different. I really like it.

4.5 stars. Very good m/m romantic suspense about a guy who's just spent six months in prison and is returning to his home town. I don't want to say more about it, because part of this book's strength is how what happened in the past and what's happening in the present unfold together. Every time I was sure I had things all figured out, I was wrong. :)

There's angst and then there's Angst. Now, I love angst as much as the next romance reader (provided I get my HEA), but even I have a limit and I think this book met and then exceeded it. Lincoln got into a wreck and a young wife died. It was an accident; he wasn't drunk, he wasn't speeding, he was distracted in his desperation to get to his destination (to rescue his sister from being abused by her husband) and momentarily took his eyes off the road. Nonetheless, he caused an accident whereby a young woman died and he served six months in jail for vehicular homicide. His driving privileges were suspended and his racing career ended. He lost most of his worldly possessions including his race car and whatever monies he made and saved from his racing days. After being released from jail, Lincoln remains devastated by what he's done and doesn't believe that he deserves one ounce of happiness.
Jay is a grieving widow. Katie, his deceased wife, was a beautiful human being: loving, caring, and compassionate. Her absence tortures him, his family, and her parents. They channel their grief into a hatred for Lincoln. They loathe him and his life; they voice threats, which Jay at first doesn't take seriously.
Jay is lost in his grief and guilt. A chance encounter with an attractive man one night behind the bar is his first m/m experience and he's hooked. Neither Jay nor Lincoln is aware of who the other is. When their identities are revealed, they are both horrified but their attraction proves to be too much and they thus begin a budding romance.
I enjoyed this book. My problem was that the copious amount of guilt, grief, and blame was so pervasive, it was stifling. I understand the premise of the plot and I get that guilt and grief would be a given here. But what bothered me was that it overshadowed 99% of the freakin' book. At the end of the book (literally 99% on my Kindle), Jay assures Lincoln he can and does see HIM and not Katie's replacement or the person who took her from him. With this assurance, Lincoln finally entertains the idea of forgiving himself for the accident. Okay, this a-ha moment should have happened, IMHO, 65%-70% the way through. If this was a book about Jay and Katie and surviving the loss of a spouse ... fine. But it wasn't. This book was supposed to be about Jay and Lincoln's romance. Therefore, it was essential that Jay and Lincoln find themselves separate and apart from the accident and Katie's death. And, this epiphany should have happened way earlier. I would've liked to see Jay help Lincoln overcome his guilt and grief. I liked both MCs in this book but was drawn to Lincoln more than Jay. I just wish their relationship saw more light-of-day away from and out from under the memory and grief that was Katie. Does that make sense?
Regardless, I adored Lincoln's family; Jessica and Mr. Wuzzie were too cute! Jay's family was f*cked up. I think that was probably intended and they therefore served their purpose. The who-dunnit aspect was pretty good and kept me guessing for 3/4 of the book.
Bottom line: A good read that could've been a lot better; the grief and guilt were too overwhelming at times and sadly detracted from the underlying romance.

Lincoln went to jail for his role in a car crash that killed a young, married woman. In his guilt, self-loathing and the mechanics of the trial, he's lost his race-car job to the driving restriction, his money to a civil settlement, his lover to his mix of depression and self-flagellation, and a year of his life to jail. His sister has been at the mercy of an abusive husband, and her kids are doing without because money is tight. Lincoln should leave town, but he won't leave them. So somehow he has to start over.
Jay has spent a year grieving for his wife Katie, killed in that crash. Around him, the members of his family and hers seem to have rapidly gone from grief to a vicious, unending anger at Lincoln for his culpability, but Jay is trying to figure out what his own emotions are. Katie was his confidant, his friend and the one person who knew all of him, including the fact that he is bi. He doesn't know how to move on, but he needs to. The sight of a man with sad, dark eyes suggests a new way to do that. Perhaps he has an unspoken thought that it is less like cheating on his dead wife to be with a man than to date another woman. Perhaps it's just Jay grasping for something he never had with Katie, but he makes a move toward that man and they have an intense sexual encounter.
It is not until their next meeting that Jay and Lincoln each figure out who the man they have been dreaming about a rematch with actually is.
This book has the potential to be a major emotional overload, and for some readers it may feel that way. To me it seemed more like a thriller. The writing is smooth for the most part, and the pacing is good. There are enough suspects to keep some aspects of the plot a puzzle until nearly the end. The guys' relationship begins as primarily sex but moves forward quickly (almost by necessity otherwise there is more to drive these two apart than keep them together.)
I am not someone who should really talk about an OTT plot, since my first book pretty much pegged the meter on that aspect. But I did feel that this book had almost too many major plot twists, which were not exploited to their full romantic/emotional potential. This book has all the ingredients to satisfy most readers who like a thriller plot, two against-the-odds lovers and family drama.

An amazing story about forgiveness and love. A love that most would agree can never work but somehow does. It’s also a story about judging others without knowing the facts. You assume you’ll know what happens next, but you don’t. You assume that the storyline will be predictable, but it’s not. I was pleasantly surprised and was never so glad to be proven wrong. My attention never faltered and I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.
I loved this story. Both Jay and Lincoln are suffering. Both are full of grief and guilt and regret. Jay has the most screwed up family ever; a family that spends more time slinging blame and no time spent trying to help Jay come to terms with the tragedy that occurred in his life. It seems to be all about them…and they were very selfish. His in-laws weren’t much better.
Lincoln is trying to get his life back together after he lost everything….everything. But it’s really hard to seek forgiveness and redemption when you don’t forgive yourself. He is a really good guy who made a mistake, but it was an accident. He did not set out to intentionally hurt anyone…it just, unfortunately, happened. And at the worst possible time; when his family needed him most.
Jay and Lincoln meet not knowing who the other is at first. But when they do, they still have a deep attraction to the other that they both know makes no sense. They should not want to be together but they can’t fight it. It defies logic, it causes them both more pain, but you can’t deny who you love. Even if everyone around you disapproves…and they do. It will take some divine intervention, lots of luck and maybe a miracle for this book to have a happy ending…but hey, it’s romance and we all deserves a second chance…even Lincoln and Jay.

Wow - this book was amazing - a complete rollercoaster of emotions for me. The characters were rich and personable despite the harsh subject matter and often painful storyline. I knew it was going to be a hard book to read because of the plot but the writing made me just need to keep reading until I was done. The author did an excellent job of writing about a heartbreaking subject and tumultuous family situation, and I admit that the final scene was so touching and beautiful that I had to read it more than once. This goes right onto my faves shelf and I expect to read it again soon.

The DRAMA, have mercy, my heart still hurts! Liked it more than 4 stars but not quite enough to push it to 5. I had some niggles with the mystery part of it, enough that it distracted me from other things somewhat. Still very much a great read. Now I'm thinking about redoing my shelves, plain old "angst" doesn't seem adequate anymore. There should be levels. Maybe one for a bit of angst, one for moderate angst and one for ulcer inducing angst. This one would fall under the latter.

Jay is a man who's world has been crushed and everyone around him keeps compressing it--suffocating him.
Lincoln is a man who's paid the price for bad judgment.
They're both hoping to find a way to move on with their lives and reach out to the other little realizing the existing relationship they already share. Awkward. I liked the premise and the MCs, but the story just seemed to be stilted at points that just didn't flow for me when I was reading it.

Gorgeous, thoughtful writing. Clever inversion of romantic tropes and genuine surprises and suspense in a story so front-loaded with angst that at times you'll want to pass out. Real journeys by complex characters. Delicious.

I really liked this one. I was not quite are how they would pull it off but it was well done. the relationship and character development was very well done and a joy to read.
the mystery on the other side could have been better. it just did not seem like part of the story most of the time and then suddenly it was there again.
but all in all it was a good book to read.

OMG!!!! What a fabulously awesome wonderful book!! I couldn't put it down; an all-consuming page-turner. Ok, I'm gushing, but it's so well deserved. Clearly, this book is going on my favorites shelf.
Lincoln caused an accident that killed a young woman and serves six months. He's consumed with guilt and has lost everything - his job, his partner. So he finds himself at the local bar where he meets a beautiful guy who has the same haunted, broken look in his eyes as him and they seem to be kindred spirits. After an erotic encounter behind the bar, the discover why. The guy is Jay Miller, husband of the woman Lincoln killed. They meet again because Jay is a compassionate person and has learned of the threats that Lincoln has been receiving so they team up to figure out who is threatening Lincoln and his family, becoming friends along the way and trying to deny they are falling in love.
Linc is so sweet and broken. Sometimes bad things happen to truly good people and this is the case here. It really was an accident and he has a hard time with his guilt over killing a young, newly married woman. Jay is a rare kind of person too. I know people are out there like him but tgey are few and far between. He was kind and compassionate and had an amazing amount of room in his heart to truly understand and forgive Lincoln and then to fall deeply in love with him. The two of the together was absolutely magical and were the healing balm that each needed to not get over, but to get through their hurts. A very beautiful relationship if not almost magical.
And the cast of characters was really great. Everyone worked so well in the story. All the characters had strong rolls and only added to the story. It was somewhat of a mystery in trying to figure out who was sending Lincoln the threats although I guessed right from the start, but it could just as easily been one of the other characters. This would make a great movie! If you are inclined to cry, you might need a tissue once or twice. It's a very moving story about the power of forgiveness and finding a soulmate (maybe for the second time).
Lincoln caused an accident that killed a young woman and serves six months. He's consumed with guilt and has lost everything - his job, his partner. So he finds himself at the local bar where he meets a beautiful guy who has the same haunted, broken look in his eyes as him and they seem to be kindred spirits. After an erotic encounter behind the bar, the discover why. The guy is Jay Miller, husband of the woman Lincoln killed. They meet again because Jay is a compassionate person and has learned of the threats that Lincoln has been receiving so they team up to figure out who is threatening Lincoln and his family, becoming friends along the way and trying to deny they are falling in love.
Linc is so sweet and broken. Sometimes bad things happen to truly good people and this is the case here. It really was an accident and he has a hard time with his guilt over killing a young, newly married woman. Jay is a rare kind of person too. I know people are out there like him but tgey are few and far between. He was kind and compassionate and had an amazing amount of room in his heart to truly understand and forgive Lincoln and then to fall deeply in love with him. The two of the together was absolutely magical and were the healing balm that each needed to not get over, but to get through their hurts. A very beautiful relationship if not almost magical.
And the cast of characters was really great. Everyone worked so well in the story. All the characters had strong rolls and only added to the story. It was somewhat of a mystery in trying to figure out who was sending Lincoln the threats although I guessed right from the start, but it could just as easily been one of the other characters. I was really able to connect with this story. It's like my life right now: A car crash that's happening and there's no turning back. It's like your life as it was flashing before your eyes, everything going wrong and you can't turn time to change it and it will haunt you for the rest of your life, till the end of your days almost to the extent of the way it did for these two men in this book. Never done a thing in your life and WHAM in one instant it's all over and done with.
Maybe it's the timing, but this story was intense for me and understanding what it's like to be alone puts you in their shoes and understand the characters better like I have and I do.
I recommend this book if you haven't read it yet.

This story was all about guilt and forgiveness and having a chance at being happy again. This was such a strange pairing but it worked so much and I couldn't help but just fall in love with both Lincoln and Jay. Lincoln was so torn up for what he had done and Jay who just needed someone to listen and acknowledge how he felt and what he needed in order to move on in his life. I enjoyed the mystery of who was doing everything and the author did a good job keeping you thinking of who it could have been. I would have liked for a little more at the end with Jay and Lincoln once things had been resolved and I could have done without Jay's mother who was just annoying. Overall this was a really enjoyable read with a nice dose of angst to keep you reading.

This is the second book of this author I have read, and I enjoyed this one so much. The premise of this book was a bit far-fetched to me, but the author managed to pull me in and make me care about these two men more than I thought I would.
This book was like a roller-coaster for my heart. The sadness of these two men was heartbreaking, but watching them struggle to move forward and love again was uplifting. I wanted to hug them both from time to time, and I had my fingers crossed that they would find happiness.
The suspense part of this novel was well done, but this book was more a romance to me, and I liked that. It kept me up reading way past my bedtime, and I don't regret a single second of my missed sleep. This story was beautiful, and I enjoyed every word.
