This Does Not End Well sounds like a chilling and atmospheric horror novel that knows how to make isolation feel truly unsettling. The haunted-house premise, combined with the remote French countryside setting, creates an intriguing backdrop for a story filled with tension and unease. What stands out is how memorable the setting seems to be, giving the horror an immersive quality that stays with the reader. Fans of haunted-house stories will likely appreciate the eerie atmosphere and sense of mystery woven throughout the novel. Adrian J. Walker appears to deliver a dark and captivating read that keeps curiosity alive from beginning to end. It’s the kind of horror story that can linger in your thoughts long after you’ve finished reading.

It just doesn't hang together. Too much is left unexplained. Too many confusing dreams. Too many indecipherable diary entries. Too cold. Too wet. Too much toxic masculinity (your wife is the planner and fixer, CALL HER!). I did really love the son, Matthew, and his Dad when he was lucid. Walker's books all have a similar protagonist so I'm assuming Adam shares a lot of qualities with Aiden which makes me think I probably wouldn't like him very much. But, I've liked everything else he's written so maybe he needs to be surrounded by more likeable characters (dogs!) that the reader can root for.
I'll look for more from this author but will be less hopeful from now on.

Haunted house novels are perhaps my favorite genre, and this novel is one of the best I've ever read. Steve Stred has a good review of this on his website. Go read that for more insight into this fantastic, memorable horror novel set in the isolated French countryside.

The writing style was different to what I usually read however once I got used to it I really enjoyed the layout. The author takes you on a rollercoaster of a journey from beginning to end however once you start thinking about what you are reading you understand so much more about the characters and what's happening. Excellent read and an excellent author
