Ten years ago, Ruby Yepez’s world was shattered when her daughter, Gracie, disappeared without a trace. After a decade of the August Girls media frenzy, dead-end leads, and sleepless nights, the public has finally moved on—and so, painfully, Ruby has, too.
But just as the noise fades, a new chaos arrives at her door when her estranged older daughter, Franki—strung out and desperate—reappears, only to vanish once more and leave behind her teenage son, Teddy. Determined not to fail another child, Ruby pours herself into giving Teddy the safety and love he’s never known.
For a time, it works. Teddy begins to believe in something better—friendship, stability, maybe even a future. But as the months pass, fractures start to form as old wounds reopen, support crumbles, and Teddy once again finds himself navigating a society that seems to keep abandoning him.
Then, one morning, everything changes. While Teddy roams the halls of his school, he’s hit with a chilling sense of déjà vu just before he’s surrounded by panic, screaming, and a distinct popping sound. As the past and present collide, he and Ruby are left to wonder, What is going on?

Author of the new, modern-day mystery anthology ?: QUESTION book series.
Building on its leading book, WHO, the ? series explores the intrigue surrounding all those leading interrogative words that swirl throughout a captivating puzzle. There is much more to come, but first—begin the journey with WHO, which is now available through Kindle Unlimited and all other formats.
Was so excited for my eARC of WHAT, part of “The Question Series” anthology. I was immediately immersed in the story and needed to know “what” was going on (hehe) and devoured the story in almost one sitting. This book is a lot different than WHO, but just as great of a read. Will definitely have to continue to read the series. If you’re looking for a fast paced, page turner choose this book!
This book being called WHAT is so perfect 😂 because one thing I noticed about this series is I am lost until that one page, and then EVERYTHING clicks and I’m left screaming What the fuck?! Over and over again. But like in a good way, ya feel me? It’s a fun twist to the thriller vibes cause it’s got the little suspense that makes you want to know what’s happening but also like mind fucks you. This book follows Teddy and his life and friends while also leading you to find out what happened that day in May and how it lead to it and that’s kinda my only complaint with this one is I had a very very hard time keeping the time lines straight, I eventually just quit trying to piece it together cause I had a basic idea of when was when and was still able to get the most out of the story I think. And that ending still hit hard and made me realize that maybe that was the point for the book? Either way these story continue to surprise me and make me look forward to the next in the series!
𝐌𝐲 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡:A strong cup of coffee and a quiet evening (perfect for getting lost in the story). 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧: 🍁 Autumn – reflective, thought-provoking, and a little moody. 𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝: YES – especially if you enjoy thought-provoking reads with unique perspectives.
𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞: •Stories that challenge your perspective and make you think •Books that mix mystery, introspection, and emotion •A narrative that’s both intelligent and deeply human •Character-driven plots with layers to unpack
𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: This book was such a refreshing change of pace for me... a completely different genre from my recent reads and I loved every minute of it.
Even though I haven’t read WHO (the first book in the series), WHAT completely hooked me. It stands on its own beautifully, but it left me with an even stronger urge to go back and read WHO to experience the entire journey. I’m already itching to add it to my collection.
Anthony Prebor’s writing style is so immersive and thoughtful. It kept me turning pages with a sense of curiosity and wonder, and I loved how the story blended intrigue with meaningful themes. This wasn’t just a book I read; it’s one I felt.
I truly hope there will be more in this series because I’m already a fan. If you’re looking for something unique, smart, and captivating, WHAT is the book you should pick up next.
WHAT gave mystery, gave emotion, gave me trust issues. Ruby’s been living in the shadow of her daughter’s disappearance for ten years, and just when life maybe starts to move on, BOOM. The case reopens, and chaos follows.
The pacing? Chef’s kiss. The twists? Plentiful. The vibes? Creepy and compelling.
If you’re into slow-burn suspense with heart, WHAT delivers. And now I’ll just be here… screaming until book 3 drops.
This was a book that will stay with me. The setting for the book is Philadelphia which was a delightful surprise because I knew how each of the places looked. Mr. Prebor captured the essence of his characters, many of whom suffered severe emotional trauma without ever becoming maudlin. Now I will definitely buy his prior book "WHO?"
