In a world of supernatural fate, their love breaks every rule.
AmariFor centuries, I've walked this earth, a vampire king with golden eyes and ancient power, waiting for the one soul destined to be mine. When I found Carla—the Mother of Spiders, feared even in Wintermoon—I knew my search was over. Her magnificent children communicate through images, showing me possibilities of a future together, while others see only monsters to fear. They call her broken because she can't feel our mate bond, but I know better. The veil her children created to protect her hides her true nature, even from herself. I've conquered empires and battled darkness, but my greatest challenge will be earning the trust of this extraordinary woman and the remarkable family she's created. No matter how long it takes, I'll prove that our love is stronger than any magic that keeps us apart.
CarlaThey whisper about me in Wintermoon—the Mother of Spiders, the horror story, the witch with monstrous children. After centuries in the shadows, hunted for what I am, I've accepted my place as an outsider. Then Amari arrived with his infuriating grin and gentle touch, claiming me as his fated mate when I've always believed I wasn't meant to be chosen. My spider children show me visions of him as their father, of us together in ways that make me blush and yearn for something I never thought possible. But there are secrets in my past, pain I've buried deep, and truths about myself I'm only beginning to understand. Can I trust this golden-eyed vampire who looks at me with wonder instead of fear? Or will opening my heart mean risking everything I've sacrificed to protect?
This is a beautiful, dark vampire romance that blends elements of historical fiction and science fiction. Brookstone and Blackburn Enterprises are at it again with their scientific creations, which the supernaturals must work together to take down.
Make sure to look visit the content warnings page. This book contains dark elements that may trigger some readers.
This is the case where I love almost everything about the book, except for the plot. A new discovery about myself, I found that I do actually care for a good damn plot in a book. I thought I was more of a character-based reader, but nope. I need a good plot to go with it.
And this book did not have a good plot going for it.
This is a story of a spider witch, Carla, ostracised by the Wintermoon community (a group of paranormal creatures living on an island away from human). She wanted to be accepted by everyone but unfortunately, people were very critical of her and her children (i.e. her spiders babies). Enter Amari, a womanizer vampire, on a job to deal with the security of Wintermoon. In our typical fated mate trope, he saw Carla and decided she was it for her. Carla, on the other hand, was still dealing with her insecurities and self-esteem issues.
Like I said, I like the characters. They were both deeply flawed but it was understandable. Our girl was a little tough to like initially, especially with her self-esteem problem. I wanted to shake some sense into her sometimes. But other than that, I love them and their spider children. I love the message that Amari, as a character, brought into the story. His Moorish background, his principles on slavery in general and its connection to this haven they were creating as a whole. It's a good side plot.
However, the general outline of the book is very dull. For a 550+ page book, I was expecting more plot depth and worldbuilding. What we got was repeated attempts for Carla to grow her backbone with no obvious plan to do so and honestly, that was just not a very interesting story to tell. You can easily fix two conflicts in one scene by having Carla to be more assured of herself by introducing some high action/high stakes drama in the same time. The plot just needs to be more cohesive and serve a point to the story; as it was, it was very disappointing.
All in all, it needs some help in creating a more interesting story. I don't know yet whether I want to continue on the series since I need some actions in my book and this book was very slow in that department. But maybe, this author's next series could prove me wrong. I see some good things coming from her.
Amari is my favorite kind of asshole MMC. You know the type broody, intense, morally gray but obsessed with one woman? Yeah, that’s him. And I ate it UP.
This book is the perfect mix of paranormal and contemporary romance with just the right amount of dark flair. Tessa Stone keeps expanding the Wintermoon universe, and I swear every new coven, pack, and messy supernatural situation makes me more obsessed. I even found myself loving the historical elements woven in—which is saying a lot because I am not a historical girlie like that.
That library scene? Had me HOLLERING. I could clearly picture Amari’s tall behind chasing Kemnebi like a damn sitcom moment and still somehow sexy.
But what really got me was the bond—or the lack of it. Seeing two characters fall in love without being bound by Fate? That’s the good stuff. Carla chose Amari. He chose her. Not because Fate or a Mark said so, but because their hearts did. And that kind of intentional love just hits different.
There are a few repeated phrases, but not in the annoying way. More like a poetic echo that stitches the whole story together. The line “It’s the first place I’ve felt safe in centuries” hit harder when both Carla and Amari reflected on it separately. That’s sync. That’s depth.
Also…Anora?? Baby girl is terrifying now. Her energy is pure danger wrapped in glam.
And don’t get me started on Amir. Frustrating little chaos magnet. He stays in some mess.
The witches of Wintermoon though? Certified badasses. The way they ride for their men but stay powerful in their own right? Yes ma’am.
Now. WHO is this scientist making creatures because I have questions—and I’m a little intrigued 👀
This might be my favorite couple in the whole series. They’re not perfect. They’re raw and messy and honest, and I love watching them earn their happiness. It’s not wrapped in a pretty bow—it’s earned, carved out of pain and choice and grit.
I say this every time, but THIS is my favorite Tessa Stone book yet.
Oh—and let’s be real: Amari? Biggest EATER in Wintermoon. That man is not playing! 😭🔥

Craving Carla pulled me straight into a world where darkness and devotion walk hand in hand. The Mother of Spiders has spent centuries in the shadows; she’s misunderstood and wrapped in a kind of magic that feels both haunting and sacred. When Amari, the golden-eyed vampire king, steps into her life, everything shifts. Their story hums with tension and tenderness, danger and desire. Amari’s patience with Carla’s guarded heart felt timeless, the kind of love that waits, aches, and refuses to fade. It’s dark, emotional, and strangely beautiful, like watching two ancient souls find light in each other’s monsters. This book had me ready to head to the pet store to look at spiders... and I’m terrified of them, so that says a lot. Curiosity may kill the cat, but in this story, it just might save the heart 😉
I loved Amari’s character but I hated how the author really diminished him throughout the book. He was awesome but I felt she started to downplay him all for Carla. Who by the way irritated my soul. Her stupidity and desperation was just too over the top. I absolutely cannot stand how absolutely pathetic she was and to write that someone as awesome as Amari felt like he didn’t deserve her. Oh please. While I loved Amari and how the book discussed Damon and his mate more, and brought back characters from the Fated Mate series it ranks #2 of the worst books from this writer. Right behind Amir’s book. Which again this writer diminished a strong male. I just hate that it seems she needs to reduce the male characters in order to elevate the simple minded female characters to make it appear as if they are better than they are. Ok, I’m done ranting.
I did a back-to-back Tessa Stone read, started with Hazel then Redeeming Nia. Going from those to this book it was a bit jarring. There is something about this book that just didn't hit like the others 😕 I had high hopes because I really wanted to see more of the vampires and how things are for them in Wintermoon.
The story was lacking direction and plot, it just felt like nothing really happened. They just chatted and had sex for most of the book. I think the shifters really spoiled us cause they wait for their mates. Amari was a man whore, he was sleeping around even on the day he met Carla.
Amir really pissed me off in this book, they told him to go home multiple times and he didn't listen. He still thinks he's invincible, twice already his magic didn't work, with Amil and now the spider. He keeps putting his life at risk not caring what it will mean when he gets hurt and Anora loses her mind and starts killing everyone.
All the great reviews, yet here I am at 3🫣⭐️I am not a regular romance girly at all that is definitely why I did not enjoy this book. Overall I loved the character development amongst Amari and Carla. It was endearing to witness a man yearning for his woman, and the children were great side characters for the book, just expected a little more 🙂
Love the inclusion of the historical informaion of the Berber people. I learned some information about them in a college class.
I think that this is a great story of of growth and perception.
Amari has seen many nations fall, altough he takes it quite hard when his specific people falls. He loves his people, but he realizes how some of the things they do affected future generations of melanated people. He comes up with ways of helping and feels like seclusion on Wintermoon is not actively helping. He believes he has to be in the mix to always help.
Carla was created to keep balance. But, she feels the sting of rejection very early by people who is supposed to love, protect and accept her. Due to her ability to befriend spiders, she constantly tries to make herself smaller to not be feared but accepted.
Amari and Carla are a great balance to each other. Amari has to learn that his perception of events is not the only way to come to a solution. Carla has to learn to demand respect despite the feelings, thoughts and fears of others.
They begin to learn this together. Amari learns the whys of Carla's attempts to fit in, without judging her. He learns to be gentle with her as she is figuring things out. Carla learns the whys of why she doesnt have to fit in. Together they create a neccessary balance for Wintermoon.
I can not wait for the follow-up that will focus more on Amari. This is a story that I did not want to come to an end
More like 2.5 stars. This was a frustrating read like no other. When I say it took me forever to get through this book, babyyyyyy. She’s the author of the other series about wintermoon island and I didn’t realize that until further into the read. This was so much like the other read just different characters. The repetition that took place in this book was maddening. I literally forced myself to finish this read tonight. I wasn’t going anymore days with this book unfinished. I just couldn’t take it anymore, the only reason I finished was because, first I skipped soooo many pages and didn’t miss a thing, and secondly I was invested in finding out why she had a veil on her, just for that to be super underwhelming. This author repeated so much of this book I was ready to pull my hair out. On top of that the MFC was on my last nerve. I understand thousands of years of no acceptance, but to keep this lady in her insecurities for 86% of the story is insane work. My only reason for 2.5 stars is because I loved the spiders, Damon, Amari, and a couple side characters. I didn’t finish her other series either the first one in the other was ugh idk. This actually wouldn’t have been such a bad story if the story would have progressed sooner than it did. There was no action until the end (well except the one bar scene). All I can say is I’m so happy it’s over and I’m surprised I gave it 2.5 stars. This was really hard to finish.

I REALLY enjoyed this book. The title may say “Craving Carla,” but Amari was the star of the show. He was just so different from the other supernatural men. He looks good, he dresses even better, has money, is a dominant playboy, and he put in the work for the betterment of POC worldwide, regardless if they’re human or supernatural. Tessa was in her bag when she created his character.
And while I liked Carla, she got on my nerves, her and her cousins! I haven’t seen a trio of witches this annoying since Charmed. My goodness. I didn’t like how she kept throwing Amari’s past in his face. Carla was willing to accept scraps from people, but Amari, before he even knew she existed, was supposed to wait to have a life? And he’s supposed to keep apologizing over and over again? They don’t have that same smoke for Gabriel. Angie had a whole man who used her like a dirty washcloth and no one begrudges her, no matter if she was a bound witch or not. And Anora… my God. She used to be one of my favs, but her wanting to attack innocent people, because her man can’t follow rules… no.
But I LOVED this story! Again, Amari stole the show for me. He’s my new book bae. 4.5 ⭐️
Exceptional book - highly recommend…remarkable love story The dialogue is fantastic…the imagery is cinematic…the love story is unforgettable…overall, this book is addictive. Tessa Stone has used her talent and imagination to breathe life into fictional characters so real that I have a vested interest in their wellbeing and future happiness. Carla is so battered and broken, eternally rejected that she isn’t ready for the full force and power of Amari’s eternal love and affection when he focuses it on her. She questions it…she guards her heart against it…but ultimately, she basks and glorifies in it, and ultimately, the knowledge of the surety of his love allows her to embrace her power as a Blackwood witch and her ultimate destiny. Amari is hot as Hades in his words, in his actions, in all the ways he loves Carla, and how he strives to prove that love to her and make himself a better man for her. This is a beautiful love story with themes of romantic love, self-love, and destined/fated mate love. It shows us that everyone is deserving of love, and fate has a match out there for each one of us.
This was a super cute book! This story progresses in a way that shows how these two people have been navigating life trying to fill a void. Amari was trying to get his rocks off and ending up feeling worse because of it and Carla was trying to find acceptance in spaces that weren’t designed for her. The two meet and it’s not exactly instant love but there is something just under the surface that both know they haven’t experienced before. Although Fate had made her decision this love story can’t follow the normal path and Amari must win over his mate the traditional “human” way despite both of them being supernatural . Although I enjoyed the book there were something’s I did not. Throughout the book some passages are repeated verbatim and seem unnecessary. In addition there is something contradictory information presented in the story. Despite that this is a great story about how being loved correctly can change how you see yourself.
Overall, I enjoyed this story but for a large portion of it, Carla was insufferable! I understand that she was dealing with trauma and isolation but she plucked my nerves when she pretty much rejected everything she wanted. She was seeking attention, love, and affection. Amari confessed that he wanted to give those things to her and kept turning them away. Even her children kept showing her who their daddy was and she just keep begging to go on a date with someone who she knew things weren't going to go anywhere with. She even manipulated her kids to let her go on that mediocre date...when everyone could see from a mile away that something wasn't right about that situation. And she was supposed to be security? And she never peeped those whereabouts?
When she finally started coming into herself is when I started to really get into the story. I do have to go back and read the Wintermoon series because I noticed that there were several cameos from those books in this one.
This doesn't end on a cliffhanger but there is a part two scheduled to release in a couple months.
I absolutely love Carla’s story. Love always prevails. Loved the black history lessons incorporated in this story. Absolutely loved that despite being judged and shunned not by only her own supernatural family but also radicals and other humans for what she is and her children she didn’t turn bck to the shadows with the help of her fated mate that she wasn’t even aware of due to her not having the fated scent or the lack there of… I then loved that despite her not being aware of her mate he still pursued her and even though he had flaws which could’ve been detrimental to them bonding in many ways he put in that effort to show her that despite those flaws he was determined to SHOW her not just tell her how he felt and his determination to have her… An AMAZING love story.. Tessa Stone you have done it AGAIN!!!!🎉🥰💜🍾🥳 Keep writing and I’ll keep reading!!!!
Tessa Stone does it again with her detailed world building and intimate scenes as she introduces us to fated mates Carla and Amari. It’s honestly been awhile since I’ve read a fated mates novel and I’m glad I dove back in with this one! Amari is your typical Casanova arrogant vampire until he meets the likes of Carla, a Blackwood witch who is ousted by both humans and supernaturals because of being the Queen of Spiders. One of the things that I love about this book is the fact that Amari and Carla’s relationship is one that is built on genuine love for each other outside of the traditional fated mate call that most supernaturals possess. I also enjoyed how quickly Amari stepped into the fatherly role to Carla’s children. The only thing that had me rate this 4 stars was Carla’s stubbornness and low self esteem 😭. She got a my nerves a few times because girl! How many times does this man have to tell you he loves you before you believe him?? Anywho, it was still a great read.
Wow! Amari and Carla may have taken the cake here. It was a story of redemption for Amari and one of rebirth for Carla.
Carla was so accustomed to being neglected that she accepted scraps from everyone even the people that were supposed to support her. Her feelings of unworthiness, loneliness, and being unloved were so strong that she latched to any sense of friendship.
Then in comes Amari with his all consuming personality taking up more space in Carla’s bubble than either of them could have expected. Not only that his connection to her children has them both confused. It was obvious who she was to him, but so many secrets kept Carla from him.
When they both begin to accept their love in a way that most fated mates did not, I knew they’d be a force. And they were. I can’t wait to see what more we learn from them.
This is book one of a new series taking place in Wintermoon. We met Carla in the previous series and this is her story of finding her faded mate. It also appears to be book one of the vampire tales. The main conflict/issue continues to be humans dislike/hatred of supernatural beings.
I like that the MMC of this book tied in humans hatred of supernaturals as in line with white supremacy. In previous books, there was a tie in to white supremacy, but more so patriarchy when it came to the human women fated mates, and how women are treated in Wintermoon. I appreciate that Tessa Stone is addressing current day issues within this context. She’s definitely taking a page from the Handmaid‘s Tale and having fictional characters and situations. Illustrate the way society is moving.
Wintermoon books NEVER miss!!! I loved this book! The character development was so on point! The family dynamics, witty banter, and return of familiar faces from the series made this passion project so special! I can't believe Tessa Stone had me in my feelings over some spiders! Yes, SPIDERS! Really in here boohoo-ing like they were MY babies! I'm a total fan girl for this series and this author! Loved the introduction of Amari but I have to confess, I'm still Team Jacob! If you're ready to dive into the black paranormal scene this is a great place to start. Welcome to Wintermoon, READ ALL THE BOOKS! You won't regret it! I can not wait for book two Loving Amari!
Another fantastic book by Tessa set in Wintermoon but with. Focus on Carla, the Spider Lady feared and shunned by almost everyone on Wintermoon because of her children
When Amari a vampire comes to Wintermoon let the fun begin
This is a page turner with some of the beloved heaters from previous books but focusing on the journey to love to two wonderful characters that believed they would never find their fated mate/love But they are in for a wild ride to get to their HEA If you love the previous books in which Carla appears you will love this book which centers on her and ultimately Amari Do not hesitate to start this spinoff you will not be disappointed guaranteed!! Great job as always Tessa!
I will admit I saw this on Amazon and bought it solely because of the author, and it did not disappoint! Reading Carla and Amari's love story left me wanting more and to my surprise there will be a second book in the future. I can't wait! I was really rooting for Carla, and enjoyed reading the banter that she and Amari have, along with the banter he has with her children. When she finally lifted the veil I was so excited! She was able to understand that depth that the mate bond has on Amari. I felt like she grasped the feelings they have for one another. I love the ending and the confidence Carla has with herself and for the future.
I have read most of Ms. Stone’s catalog and this is by far the best yet. I love how she intertwined history and drew parallels between the struggles black people and supernatural beings. Amari was pressure. He showed Carla every chance he got just how he felt about her. It took her a little while to lower her guards which was understandable due to all she’s endured over the centuries but this turns into a beautiful love story and happy ending. I look forward to book 2.
I've been reading shifter books for a year now and just discovered Tessa Stone. Her writing is captivating and keeps you enthralled the entire book. Carla and Amari's journey to love and acceptance, of oneself and each other is the thing romance novels are made of, with dark twists and turns. And Carol's babies!!! You'll have to read the story to love and appreciate them lol. I can't wait to read more of Tessa's books!
I’m giving this book 5 stars as I thought it was very unique. I am new to paranormal romance so i enjoyed this and love the representation of “if he wanted to he would” because this made his Intensions known and was consistent. I enjoyed seeing Carla’s growth and even though her insecurities were frustrating at times it was understandable when thinking how long she endured certain things. I will definitely read another book by this author.
I luv the Wintermoon series but hesitated to read Craving Carla because of the spiders. I’m glad I pushed thru because Amari is one of my favorite characters of this series. Carla on the other hand was an insecure crybaby. Those Blackwood witches irk my nerves!! Angie is hateful. Anora is crazy. Carla is insufferable. I loved the civil rights theme of the novel and can’t wait for part 2. I’m really curious to see how this all works out
I have been reading all the series and i love the profundity of this one, how I loved and hate Amir, how he was we flaws but him working with them and Carla oh Carla i loved her, i would say this is one of my favorites of the series. I loved that is not everything black and white like with the wolfs, i can wait for the next one.
Color me blind, but for some reason, I did not know this book was going to be a thing … like I knew , but didn’t . Confusing.. I know. It didn’t connect. I’m so happy that I came across this book. I read every single word. I did not fast forward through any of the scenes bravo to you! Can’t wait for a book 2.
How dare you make my emotions come out so strong!!!
I swear I couldn't put this book down. She's definitely an artist. Tessa why would you make me cry like that during the reading of this masterpiece? I mean geesh I swear I felt for Carla more than any character you've ever produced! Thank you is all I can say!
Amari and Carla story was cute, Carla just wanted a place to call home and to be accepted by Wintermoon. I’m glad Carla was able to come into her purpose and move around with a care of being accepted by the supernaturals.Amari was a lonely vampire who was a womanizer, but when him and Carla crossed paths Amari world stopped, and he wasn’t letting up when it came to her. Can’t wait for part two
