Short stories are small literary gems that say a lot with few words. In this anthology, organised by Ana-Maria Chaves, Livraria Lello brings together some of the best Portuguese short stories.
A very sweet collection of short stories… some more captivating and logical than others. Thoroughly enjoyed my reading experience on the beach in Lagos!
The mermaids song 2. The supernatural 3. The man of dreams 4. Repentance 5. To covet all is to lose all 6. The dragon of rhodes 7. The diplomats ring 8. Tale X 9. Hat and her 10. Crystal tales 11. The joão fernandes trilogy
Perhaps I don't like old literature much, or perhaps it's just that the stories in this collection are the opposite of "timeless" - they all feel so dated and overwritten, and many read like low-grade fables/fairy tales, complete with dragons and mermaids and wish-granting fish, instead of stories with characters and an arc. Oddly, the last entry in the collection, and most likely the newest (authors' birth/date deaths are listed, yet not the stories' dates of publication), is the only one that feels like a story , but by then, I was already resigned to the mediocrity of the volume as a whole.
ma polnud kunagi varem yhtegi rida portugali kirjandust lugenud!
A fun selection of short stories from Portugal, highlighting how storytelling was used to pass along various important lessons. I enjoyed the “To Covet All Is To Lose All” story the most!
A solid collection of whimsy and some slightly surreal stories. There were some stories that I enjoyed more than others but on the whole this was a good book to dip in and out of easily
