Lightning flashes overhead as she walks along the isolated path out of town. She listens to the rumble of thunder until she hears the unmistakable sound of heavy boots on the path behind her. She starts to run, but he’s faster and she already knows there is no one for miles to hear her screams…
It’s Halloween in Black Rock Falls and among the small town’s annual festivities, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are called to a gruesome discovery. Where there was once a plastic mannequin in a coffin, now stands the lifeless body of a young woman, her pale skin illuminated under the heavy stormy sky.
Taking in the victim’s long dark hair and still blue eyes, it’s the bite marks on her neck that have Jenna’s fearing what kind of monster could have inflicted such wounds. Could this be the most sick and twisted murderer Black Rock Falls has ever seen?
Days later, Jenna’s heart breaks when another vulnerable young woman is found at another Halloween attraction in the centre of Black Rock Falls. As Jenna surveys the scene, she instantly notices the familiar deep red bite marks on her neck.
With the whole town gripped with fear that a vampire-like killer is on the loose, Jenna works around the clock to hunt down the fiend who is stalking vulnerable young women. When she links the bodies to a cold case, it’s clear he has taken many victims.
As Jenna finally gets a breakthrough, a violent storm shuts off the small town, giving the murder the perfect chance to kill again, but Jenna puts herself in unthinkable danger to catch him. Will she stop him before he can take another life or has Jenna finally met her match?
It's close to Halloween time and you that something sinister is going to happen in Black Rock Falls! The town is known for its crime and serial killers but this fall season there is a "vampire-like killer" claiming victims left and right! Their Haunted Hearts is the 27th book in D.K. Hood's gripping, thrilling and chilling Detectives Kane and Alton series. D. K. Hood has proven that she is not slowing down and perhaps is only getting started. I loved how she tied her vampire killing baddie in with the Halloween season. Make no mistake, this killer is not Buffy the vampire slayer. This is one sick and deranged individual who is killing innocent women.
Jenna and Kane have their hands full with their now fifteen-month-old son, Jackson, and his older brother, Tauri. They are enjoying family life with their boys when the body of a young woman is found with bite marks on her neck near one of the town's Halloween attractions. Fans of the series know that both Jenna and Kane will pull out all the stops to catch a killer!
As with the other amazing books in this series, this book was wonderfully written, well thought out, full of tension, twists, dread, mounting danger, and great detective work. I love D.K. Hood's vivid descriptions and how she has created a sense of found family and community amongst her regular characters. I enjoy the character development and banter between her characters.
Jenna and Kane are both strong characters and I enjoy them both equally. I enjoy how D.K. Hood has written them. I root for them both individually and as a couple. I also love how she balances their work life with their personal life. This makes for very enjoyable reading, and I feel invested in both of their characters.
A BIG plus of this series is that you can jump in at any time. Most of the books in the series work as stand-alone books but one can always go back and begin at the beginning if you like.
Gripping, thrilling, mysterious, and hard to put down! I can't wait to read what D.K. Hood writes next.
*buddy read with Bec(becbingesbooks) . Please read her review as well!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
In this 27th book of the series sheriff Jenna Alton and deputy Kane are after a serial killer leaving bodies in the Halloween decorations around town. This was a great spooky mystery for the Halloween season. I love this series and am looking forward to the next release. Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC that will be released September 9, 2025!
A great fan of D.K. Hood, I gladly reached for the latest novel in the Kane and Alton series. Hood targets her 27th story in the collection around a spooky series of murders in the small community of Black Rock Falls, Montana. As the town prepares for Hallowe’en celebrations, a woman is found murdered in a coffin. Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy Dave Kane prepare to investigate, learning that a mysterious man was seen with the victim hours before her death. More murders occur, sending the town into a panic and put the authorities on edge. The killer seems to be focussed on killing like a vampire, complete with bite marks and stakes to the heart. D.K. Hood presents a tense novel that keeps the reader guessing as the investigation heats up.
It’s Halloween in Black Rock Fall, and the festivities are kicking into high gear. Amongst the lights and spooky things hanging from the trees is a gruesome discovery inside one of the displays. Where a plastic mannequin once lay is now a young woman, slain and stuffed in a coffin. Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy, Dave Kane, rush to the scene to investigate.
There are odd bite marks on the victim’s neck as well as a stake in the chest, sending everyone to wonder if this is the work of a vampire-like killer. While that is outlandish, this is serial killer central, bringing the oddest and more sadistic people to town to commit their odd rituals. Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane will have to work swiftly to solve this case, as the holiday inches closer.
A few days later, another woman is found dead, her neck pierced with two bite marks once again with a massive chest wound. Sheriff Alton realises that this will not stop until she and her team are able to capture the killer. Black Rock Falls is gripping with fear as a vampire killer is on the loose and no one appears safe. A raging storm locks residents in the community, which might be the ideal place for a killer to hunt without stopping. It will take a great deal of effort to find and stop them. Hood develops this stunning thriller that is timely and edgy in equal measure.
I have long enjoyed the work of D.K. Hood and this series. The stories are both quick-paced and serve to deliver an impactful sentiment for the dedicated reader. The narrative flows with ease and keeps the reader on edge with each new murder. As things gain momentum, the reader is forced to speculate about everything that is taking place in Black Rock Falls. Characters provide great pathways to strengthen the story, both recurring faces and those new to the scene. As always, there is some personal development for Jenna Alton and Dave Kane, married and starting their family. Plot points keep things on edge and provide so much for the reader to enjoy. Surprises help keep things from bring too predictable, yet also leave some crumbs for the series fan to wonder where things are headed next. With no sense of winding up soon, D.K. Hood has set a pathway for many stories to come.
Kudos, Madam Hood, for this spooky addition to the series.
Halloween in Black Rocks Falls.. what could go wrong? Serial killer central goes all out for for this holiday but this will be a Halloween that they will never forget. Victims bodies are found in Halloween decorations around the town … this is one sick person.
I love this series, Dave and Jenna are such great characters, and the team they have around them all works so well together. It is so cute seeing the new baby and his big brother in this book. I look forward to so many more adventures in town with all of these characters.
Thanks again to Bookouture for my early copy of this book to read. Publishes on September 9th.
Hooked on this series more than any ATM! When life has been too crazy for reading this has probably helped me get back into it more.
A Halloween themed police procedural, in a good way (aka it isn't fantasy), and serial killer with some pretty hold your breath thrilling parts.
Whilst the ending had some similarities to something that occurred in an earlier book, would recommend and think this may even work as a standalone Halloween season book, but I doubt it'd hit the same.
Many thanks to author, publisher and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review and as a D.K.Hood read, to Debra for another buddy read :)
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review Their Haunted Hearts, the 27th (!) book in D.K. Hood's Detectives Kane and Alton series. Black Rock Falls + Halloween = Serial killer/vampire slayer. I cannot wait to see how this turns out. We all know that Halloween in Black Rock Falls - Serial Killer Central - is both a time for celebration and abject terror; and this year is no exception. Their son, Jackson, is now 15 months old, and Jenna and Dave are back hard at work, protecting their town and its inhabitants as well as their family and all of their extended clan. And then, somebody decides that vampires are running amok in Black Rock! Will the team be able to figure out who and why before the big Halloween Ball? I've read all of these books, and reviewed most of them, and this one is a worthy addition to the canon. Everything you have come to expect from the series is there. Although I did have a pretty good idea of the perpetrator, I was still engrossed in the story, right up until the very end. This was a great return visit to Black Rock Falls, and we got a little sneak peek into future goings-on.
The first lesson you’re taught as a kid is stranger danger … Well it was when I was a kid (other than usual green cross code and potty training). Well anyway – everyone knows not to get in the car with a stranger so you’d expect in Black Rock Falls it goes without saying but no. Some people just don’t understand the curse of this Montana town. Which invariably ends in a body or two or three …
This time Kane and Alton have got themselves another Halloween killer. Someone who is taking women, killing them, draining them of blood and then putting them on display within the Halloween festivities. Sick and twisted or what???
This killer (nutter is a better word IYKYK) really does lure the victims in playing the Good Samaritan. You know you really should fall for that sort of behaviour despite there being some genuinely good people in this world. Hood placed a massive question mark against anyone who tries to just do that one nice thing for people – if everyone read these books, there would be no #payitforward movement around!
That said the sheriff’s department and the supporting medical examiner unit are the real deal. They are the crime fighters of Black Rock Falls, they are nice people in the community and for me I’d love to have them as friends – they’d definitely have my back!
I don’t know how she does it but Hood has done it again. Their Haunted Hearts is a tense dark thriller where my investigative prowess failed miserably in solving the crime before my favourite sheriff’s department!
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this amazing book in a fantastic series
i love Halloween and this book has it all
a vampire slayer murdered victims with no blood left in them a town about to be hit by a freak storm
jenna and dave are back after taking time with their new son and they were hoping that being back to work would be a slow easy pace for them to ease back into routine...yeah as.... if this is black rock falls where every serial killer makes for
so its no surprise when the first call comes that there is a body in strange circumstances.... where there had once been a mannequin in a coffin there was now a real dead body of a woman... with a steak through her heart... and when wolf confirms what he suspected that there was no blood in the body she hadnt been killed where she was found... and she had evidence of a bite mark reminiscent of a vampire bite its not long before rumours about town that there is a vampire about...
its not looking good for Halloween if they have a serial killer in town....
oh man this series just gets better and better looking forward to the next book from this author
Perfect timing to read this book because fall is in the air and Halloween cometh. I liked how Hood made 15 months go by in a flash and several, things have advanced. Jackson is a little person and Raven and Emily are moving toward each other. Even Wolfe has moved along with Norrell. The vampires were out in full force as evil lurks around every dark corner. I loved the blend of family and fiasco in the scenes. I adored the rescue scene where Wolfe is really pissed and lost his cool. I loved how the Calvary arrived in time! It will drive a stake through your heart 🧛 Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance read.
Oh dear, it’s almost Halloween again in Black Rock Falls, and loyal readers of this fantastic series already know what this means. The village attracts serial killers like metal to a magnet, and let’s be honest — what better cover is there to hide a corpse than among all those festive decorations the villagers love so much?
And indeed! Even before the holiday arrives, Jenna and her team are already called in for a murder case — and one that fits the Halloween atmosphere perfectly...
Shocked by the audacity of the killer, I decided, just like the police team, to turn every detail inside out and upside down, hoping I might finally be able to “arrest” the right person myself. I must admit, the author didn’t make it easy for me, and my grey cells had to work overtime. Still, there was a certain someone who made my hair stand on end, so I focused all my attention on them.
Jenna and her team once again find themselves in dangerous situations, but they never hesitate to go all in. I held my breath several times and crossed my fingers.
What can I say? It’s still a phenomenally good series, and I just can’t get enough of it. As far as I’m concerned, bring on the next book! :)
Oh, and maybe you’re wondering if I was right in the end? The answer is yes. ;)
I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to give this story 5 stars.
Their Haunted Hearts (Detectives Kane and Alton, Book 27) by D.K. Hood is another gripping installment in the Black Rock Falls series, perfectly timed for Halloween. Hood masterfully sets the scene with stormy nights, eerie attractions, and a series of chilling murders that make you double-check your locks. The combination of atmospheric suspense and Halloween creepiness makes this one of the most spine-tingling entries in the series so far.
What stands out in this book is how Hood balances the thrills with the personal lives of Jenna, Kane, and their team. The time jump, showing Jenna and Kane navigating life with their fifteen-month-old son, Jackson, adds emotional depth and makes the stakes feel higher. Hood’s attention to character development keeps readers invested not just in the case, but in the people behind the badges.
The plot revolves around a serial killer targeting young women, staging their bodies among Halloween decorations, and giving a vampire-like twist with bite marks. The investigation is fast-paced and full of red herrings, keeping readers guessing while still allowing glimpses into the team’s personal dynamics. Even if you predict the killer early, the atmospheric tension, stormy backdrop, and race-against-time urgency make the story impossible to put down.
Their Haunted Hearts also offers the fun of catching up with returning characters while introducing new ones and teasing future storylines. Hood’s writing is sharp, cinematic, and immersive, making Black Rock Falls feel like a character in its own right—charming yet terrifying.
Creepy, thrilling, and emotionally resonant, this installment proves once again why D.K. Hood’s series remains a must-read for crime thriller fans. Whether you’re a longtime follower or new to the series, this Halloween-set thriller delivers chills, suspense, and page-turning excitement.
What's better than a serial killer mystery set during Halloween? Nothing!! Their Haunted Hearts is a spooky read with a sick killer on the loose. It's up to Kane and Alton to find him before the Halloween festivities. The town of Black Rock Falls is decked out for Halloween which is only a little ways away. Everywhere you look the stores and restaurants have ghosts, spider webs, coffins w/bodies, and other spooky decorations. Everyone is so busy placing decorations that no one notices when someone drags a dead body and places it in a coffin. The killer counted on this and other people thought it was a mannequin. When Kane and Alton are called to the gruesome scene, a young woman's body is in the coffin. She's very pale, and has bite marks on her neck..
As more young women are found in the same state, Jenna knows it's a race to find this sick killer before he kills again. When a strong storm hits and knocks out power as well as cell signals, will Jenna and Dave be able to get to the next victim in time? This is a fantastic mystery that you'll have fun reading with the Halloween timeline. I love all of the Kane and Alton books, but this one was a lot of fun to solve, and I rate it 5 stars with my highest recommendation. I figured out the killer early on and was pleased that I had guessed correctly at the end. This is book 27 in the Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood, but can easily be enjoyed as a standalone if you've never read the others. Their Haunted Hearts is out on September 9 and should be added to your TBR pile if you love a good mystery. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Their Haunted Hearts in exchange for a fair review. #TheirHauntedHearts
Another gripping installment in the Black Rock Falls series, and this time D.K. Hood leans into the perfect setting for chills: Halloween. The atmosphere is eerie and unsettling, with stormy nights, creepy attractions, and the kind of murders that make you want to double-check your locks.
What I enjoyed most is how the story weaves in not only the investigation but also the personal connections of Jenna, Kane, and the rest of the team. It gives the thriller emotional weight and makes the stakes feel even higher. The pacing is smooth, the writing sharp, and the suspense never lets up—exactly what I’ve come to expect from Hood.
That said, I can’t help but think: who in their right mind would actually move to Black Rock Falls? With serial killers constantly lurking in the woods and streets, I’d be out of there in a heartbeat. Still, as a reader, it makes for addictive crime fiction.
Creepy, atmospheric, and impossible to put down—this is another strong entry in the series that fans will race through.
It has taken me 27 books, but I finally guessed the killer and I got it right!! Although I have a feeling that Ms Hood made it so that I could!
I love, well, if I should say love, but the fact that one of our own was in danger - it was most definitely a great move to do so. I was thinking how dark we could go. I mean, each book is darker, and I always wonder if anyone on the team might "turn" or get hurt. I love that despite being so many books in, it's still fresh, and with each book, we have new complications. Jenna now has Jackson to worry about; he's now 15 months old. I did laugh that there were no serial killers until Jenna came back to work!!! Sign of a nice serial killer LOL.
It's intense, and I devoured the audiobook in mere hours. I couldn't stop listening to it! Was there really a vampire stalking Black Rock Falls?!?
Another gripping crime thriller from DK Hood. Jenna and Dave are managing work as well as looking after their sons, but soon a killer makes life a bit more difficult. A young woman’s body is found in one of the Halloween displays drained of blood and with a stake through her heart. Jenna and the team suspect the killer will strike again with Halloween a few days away, and they’re right. We get an insight into the killer’s thoughts and it seems he believes the girls he is killing really are vampires. This is a gripping crime thriller with some nail biting moments when the team are in danger. I love this series, and can’t wait for the next book. Thanks to Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.
✅We are back at Halloween time in Black Rock Falls. It seems to be the place to be for Halloween I enjoyed reading Their Haunted Hearts. It is a very intense suspense thriller that does keep you on the edge of your seat. Jenna and her team work around the clock and put themselves in dangerous situations trying to solve this case. As always, the team work long hours trying to figure out what is going on with mysterious vampire type murders. I have to say I had a “creepy” feeling right from the beginning about someone and my gut feeling was correct. All in all, this was a ok return to Black Rock Falls….but, I do wonder, what else is going to happen in this town?????
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
It’s Halloween in Black Rock Falls and there is another serial killer stalking the residents of the town. Jenna and her team need to try and solve this quickly because the murders are coming thick and fast. I really enjoy this series and this was a good solid read. One downside for me, the serial killer was glaringly obvious and I guessed correctly not too far into the book. I did however still enjoy the story..
I highly recommend this series there are some seriously good stories to be read, I dont know what goes on in DK Hoods head but she can really crack out a great serial killer story.
Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for this ARC in return for my honest review.
It's the run up to Halloween and once again the townspeople of Black Rock Falls are going all out with the decorations. Unfortunately, someone in town is there to spoil the festivities and replaces a mannequin in one display with the body of a young woman. The victim has been drained of blood and there is a stake through her heart. As other victims are discovered Sheriff Alton, Deputy Kane and their extended team work around the clock to identify the apparent vampire slayer.
This is another great instalment in the Kane & Alton series. Realised when I started reading it that I had missed book 26 but this didn't distract from this story at all.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D K Hood for an eARC of this book in return for an honest review.
Their Haunted Hearts is a gripping crime thriller with a warning to never trust a stranger. The story is suspenseful and ends with a satisfying conclusion that ties up the mystery of the slayer running loose in Black Rock Falls. This book combines all my favorite things which are crime fiction, vampires and Halloween. To appreciate the characters relationships and backstories. I recommend reading the earlier books in the Detectives Kane and Alton book series.
A perfect book for reading at Halloween and quite easily the scariest of the author's books so far, it showed a more vulnerable side to Jenna I guess due to her being a mum, I thought because of the references to Beth. , that she was going to make an appearance in this book but I guess we'll have to wait for the author to write the next book in that series. A eerie 5 star read for me.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
When a dead girl is found propped up in a coffin, drained of good and with puncture marks on her neck, rumours of vampires flood Black Rock Falls. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deptiy Dave Kane and the team begin to investigate. As the bodies increase, it’s clear they have a serial killer in town.
This book takes place 15 months from the previous one. Jenna and Dave have had a year away from work and are now back till time. I liked that the author did this time jump, but I was also sad not to see them navigate the newborn stage!
As always I enjoy reading these characters. I always feel like I am right there and that they could be friends of mine. The writing was very atmospheric, especially with the descriptions of the bridge and the storm (no spoilers!). My heart was in my mouth at times and I couldn’t put this down. Fast paced and tense, it was almost time to put my kindle in the freezer (iykyw).
I enjoy the methodical approach to all of these stories. Working through the list of subjects and eliminating as we progress. I had my suspicions early on, and was proven correct but it still came Out of the blue when it was revealed.
A quick, creepy Halloween read with storms, mannequins, and bite-mark murders in Black Rock Falls. The atmosphere and pacing are solid, but the plot leans on familiar tropes and doesn’t pack many surprises. Fans of the Kane & Alton series will enjoy it, though it’s not the most memorable installment.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy for an honest review.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
D.K. Hood’s Their Haunted Hearts is a chilling, Halloween-themed installment in the Kane and Alton series that blends small-town dread with serial killer suspense, delivering a tightly plotted mystery that refuses to let go. It’s the 27th book in the series, and yet it feels fresh, atmospheric, and emotionally grounded.
Set in Black Rock Falls—a town notorious for its dark underbelly—this entry opens with a grisly discovery during the town’s Halloween festivities. What was supposed to be a harmless coffin prop turns into a crime scene when the body of a young woman is found inside, her neck bearing bite marks that suggest something far more sinister than a typical murder. Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner David Kane are immediately thrust into a case that blurs the line between theatrical horror and real-life monstrosity.
Hood’s strength lies in her ability to maintain suspense while deepening character relationships. Jenna and Kane, now navigating parenthood alongside their investigative duties, bring a new emotional layer to the series. Their dynamic—equal parts professional and personal—adds warmth and complexity, especially as they juggle the demands of raising their sons, Jackson and Tauri, while tracking a killer who seems to revel in psychological manipulation.
The pacing is brisk, with short chapters and escalating stakes that keep the reader engaged. Hood uses the Halloween setting not just for atmosphere, but to explore themes of disguise, fear, and the masks people wear—both literally and metaphorically. The killer’s methods are theatrical, but the emotional impact is real, especially as the team uncovers connections between the victim and a string of past disappearances.
What sets Their Haunted Hearts apart is its blend of procedural grit and emotional resonance. Hood doesn’t rely solely on gore or shock; she builds tension through character insight, forensic detail, and the slow unraveling of motive. The investigation feels authentic, and the small-town setting amplifies the claustrophobia and paranoia as suspects emerge from familiar places.
Thematically, the novel explores trauma, secrecy, and the haunting nature of unresolved grief. The title is more than a metaphor—it reflects the emotional toll on both victims and investigators, as well as the lingering shadows cast by past cases. Hood’s writing is clean and evocative, with just enough detail to immerse without overwhelming.
For fans of the series, Their Haunted Hearts is a satisfying continuation that honors the emotional evolution of its leads while delivering a fresh, eerie mystery.
For newcomers, it’s a compelling entry point—accessible, gripping, and rich with character depth.
Title: The Haunted Hearts Author: D. K. Hood Series: Detectives Alton and Kane #27 Publisher: Bookouture Genre: Mystery Thriller Pub Date: September 9, 2025 My Rating: 4.5 Stars Pages: 258
I have read many of D. K. Hood series thrillers. My first was Special Agent Beth Katz series and became a fan. However, I got on the Alton and Kane train late but totally enjoyed the few I have read. So here I am again. Pleased that I wasn’t all that lost by getting on board so late. Some back story ~ Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband David Kane have an adorable son ‘Tauri’. He is a smart four year old Native American; they adopted . He brings so much joy in their lives! In Book #26 “Good Girls Don’t Cry’ we learn that Jenna is pregnant and Tauri he is going to have a sibling! Also know they are going to take some time off but will be back by Halloween. (Ms. Hood’s favorite time of the year!)
This story takes place 15 months after Good Girls Don’t Cry as Jenna and Dave have had a year away from work. Their son Jackson is now fifteen month old. As you may guess older brother Tauri loves him. It’s Halloween in Black Rock Falls and among the small town’s annual festivities. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane are called to a gruesome discovery. Where there was once a plastic mannequin in a coffin now stands the lifeless body of a young woman- she has puncture marks on her neck - thus rumors of a vampire. Soon there are more bodies; it appears there is a serial killer in Black Rock Falls.
Although there are some gruesome things going on – it is Halloween so expected some gruesome things in this thriller.
I enjoyed it and as always- whodunit was a surprise. Awww I do love this series! . About the author D.K. Hood~ in her bio we learn that she always had a wicked sense of humor and was the kid who told the ghost stories around the campfire. Now she enjoys writing crime, mystery and thrillers. I certainly enjoy her spine-tingling stories!
A Big Thank You to NetGalley and Bookouture for this early eGalley. Publishing Release Date scheduled for September 9, 2025.
Halloween in Black Rock Falls, it’s bound to be murder!
Book 27 of the Kane and Alton series picks up around 15mths after the last book with baby Jackson now 15mths old along with Rowley’s new daughter who was born not long after Jackson. Emily has finally finished her study and is a fully fledged medical examiner opening the door to Raven to finally make a move towards dating her, the annual Halloween ball a perfect event to ask her to. Tension continues between Rio and Raven, but perhaps for reasons other than Ravens interest in his ex, Emily. Julie is also growing up. Off at collage and trying to find her direction but knowing she wants to help children. While away, she meets a potential love interest, who has a past linked to Black Rock Falls and I see a story coming to discover his past and inheritance when he returns after he finishes his study.
I found myself more interested in the main characters and their lives than the serial killer they were chasing this time around which had a certain familiarity, but it still had me turning the pages to see how it would all fall into place. Things move at a good pace, and the team also find themselves in danger. Another man with psychological issues has moved to town, believing he is a vampire slayer and saving the town by warning them about the vampires among them as he kills them and puts them on display. There is also a nice lead into a new case as something didn’t seem right at the farm of a suspect when they had gone to interview him.
The scene is set. It's Halloween in Serial Killer Central. A storm is bearing down on Black Rock Falls with moaning wind, thunder and lightning. To add to all this, there is a psychotic serial killer who thinks he is a vampire hunter. It does not get much more eerie than this scene. That is until a young woman's body is found in a coffin (meant for Halloween decorations outside a business), with a stake through her heart. The creep factor just ratcheted up on a whole other level.
However, this killer picked the wrong town to mess with. Kane, Alton and crew will be hunting this maniac, with severe delusions of the vampire kind, and they rarely lose. Chasing and catching serial killers is what they do best.
I adore the characters in this series. They are truly a dream team of investigators, medical examiners, forensic experts and cyber technology experts, just to name a few. But they are also friends and family.
D. K. Hood's talent for writing a great serial killer mystery just keeps shining brighter with every installment in this series. This one was especially spooky being set at Halloween. Also, even though this is a murder mystery, this author always keeps it clean with no foul language, which is also a plus for me.
I had my suspicions, but this author always makes me doubt myself and my armchair amateur crime solving skills. This was a great mystery, with an even more fantastic plot, and it will also hit very close to home for this cast of characters.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
If you’re already a fan of the Kane and Alton series, book 27 will feel like coming home—albeit to a town where murder lurks behind every corner. Their Haunted Hearts is a chilling, fast-paced thriller that blends the eerie atmosphere of Halloween with the relentless tension of a serial killer hunt.
D.K. Hood knows how to keep readers hooked. From the opening scene—lightning cracking overhead, boots crunching ominously behind a lone woman on a dark path—you’re thrown straight into the storm. The murder scenes are grisly and cinematic, and the vampire-like bite marks add a deliciously creepy twist that sets this instalment apart.
Jenna Alton and David Kane are as sharp and determined as ever, and their dynamic continues to be one of the series’ strengths. The emotional stakes feel higher this time, with Jenna risking everything to stop a killer who’s been hiding in plain sight. The storm that cuts off Black Rock Falls adds a claustrophobic urgency that makes the final chapters impossible to put down.
What I loved most was how Hood ties the current murders to a cold case, giving the story a deeper emotional resonance. It’s not just about solving a crime—it’s about justice for victims long forgotten.
This book is perfect for fans of Lisa Regan and Melinda Leigh, but even if you’re new to the series, you can jump right in. It’s gripping, atmospheric, and just the right amount of terrifying.
Thank you to DK Hood, the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
