This is a romantic escape read that whisks you off to the Isle of Mull.
The title of One Scottish Summer would suggest that the book would detail a romance over one summer. However it actually makes reference to a summer where the two main characters spend time together and then jumps 14 years (also not in summer).
There is unrequited love, friends to lovers, will they won't they vibes. It's an easy holiday read that painted the Isle of Mull beautifully but some characters fall a bit flat.
Tilly and Logan were best friends, spending a memorable summer on the Isle of Mull in Scotland. It was a summer where they shared plans for their future. After 15 years, Tilly returns to Mull after Logan’s aunt, Joy, passes away.
Joy’s journal provides the advice and encouragement that Tilly needs to share how she feels about Logan and realize that he feels the same. In addition to the journey we see for Tilly, Logan realizes that he must also be truthful about his feelings for Tilly.
I enjoyed reading their story and how they take the bold steps to share how they have always loved each other all these years later. We understand why Tilly behaves the way she does, reacting out of fear. We see her be brave in overcoming a fear of regret in changing the relationship dynamic between her and Logan from friends to something more.
The novel considers the significance of regret on the choices we make, how fear impacts our ability to find love, and how coming home can help realize what and who we need in our lives.
I think time away brings perspective and when Tilly is back in Scotland, the memories of her summer there reawaken why the Isle of Mull is such an important place - it’s the people.
The landscape is an inspiring place for Tilly, Logan, and Joy as well. I thought the prose, describing the Isle of Mull, was vivid and takes the readers to Scotland! In addition to meeting Robert, Joy was inspired so much that she immediately called the Isle of Mull home.
This story is a hopeful and heartfelt novel. I liked how the journal entries advance the story and provide the story of Joy’s life. Joy’s journal entries are reflected in both Tilly and Logan’s journeys. She gives them the guidance and honest advice they need to find each other again and to know that home is both a place and a person.
Thank you to Kate Frost and Love Books Tours for the gifted copy and opportunity to be part of the tour! I was provided a copy of this book for free and am leaving an honest review.
One Scottish Summer, by Kate Frost, is the story of best friends Tilly Fernsby and Logan Wray. Having met at boarding school, Tilly and Logan were fast friends both coming from the same sort of cold childhoods. Logan’s mother passed when he was 13 and his businessman father was too busy to attend to his grieving son so put him in boarding school except for the glorious summer he had spent with Aunt Joy, his mother’s sister. Tilly was born to two self absorbed people who divorced and put her in boarding school. Luckily it was the same school and they were inseparable, both through school and then college in Edinburgh where they shared a house with a group of others.
The summer after graduation Logan and Tilly spent their time with Aunt Joy on the Scottish Isle of Tull. Much of Logan’s time was spent chatting with his friend Rosie at the pub while Tilly spent time in haylofts and sandy beaches with farmer Cal, whose heart she broke when she headed back to Edinburgh. Tilly also wrote daily in her journal while overlooking the sea, a habit that Aunt Joy picked up after they left.
As the friends parted ways, Tilly off to travel and Logan to determine what he wanted to do with his life, they saw each other less and less as years went by. But then, fourteen years later, they both return to Tull as Logan handles Aunt Joy’s estate and they hold her celebration of life. While Logan is Joy’s sole heir, she did leave her journal to Tilly. The observations and life lessons left her by Joy may just have been the greatest gift anyone could have given her.
This is an interesting tale showing how family comes in many forms. It also demonstrates how a caring early childhood like Logan experienced leads to a warmer and more caring personality as an adult whereas someone raised in coldness doesn’t acquire the same depth and caring, but can gain these traits later with effort. This is an interesting story and I do recommend it.
I will forever be grateful to have found author Kate Frost and her beautiful, poetic and unforgettable stories. Each one leaves me dreaming of lands far away, romantic adventures and love everlasting. In “One Scottish Summer” we meet Tilly and Logan, friends since their teens who reunite on the Isle of Mull to remember his Aunt Joy, who had been like another mom to him his whole life. Her passing left a void in Logan’s life and he was glad that his best friend, Tilly, was there to comfort him. Logan had an extensive list of responsibilities when it came to Loch View House, the home his aunt had left him. Going through her personal belongings was very difficult, but there was one item he found that made him smile; his aunt’s journal. He was pleased to see that she had left it to Tilly, and Logan knew she would pour over every word with heartfelt dedication. Tilly was the only person besides his aunt that he trusted completely. He may not have seen Tilly in a while, but she was forever in his heart.
Tilly arrived on the island with a sad heart and fond memories of her summer spent at Loch View House, because it was the best summer of her life. The Isle of Mull was known for its rugged coastlines and sandy beaches and Tilly hoped to create new memories during her stay. Of course she would help Logan at this difficult time, but she never could have imagined that reading Aunt Joy’s journal would change her life forever. All the special moments of the summer she spent with Logan came rushing back and she soon realized he was the missing part of her puzzle, and wondered if their story would be journal worthy, too.
One Scottish Summer isn't the romance I thought I was going to get - in a good way.
I asked to read this ARC as a part of my Romance February goals. The premise sounded nice - childhood friends Tilly and Logan come together on the isle of Mull after the death of Logan's Aunt Joy. Both Tilly and Logan have spent their adult lives sabotaging their romantic relationships but for very different reasons. For the first time in 15 years both are single and at crossroads in their lives.
The descriptions of Mull are vivid, allowing the reader to see the harsh yet homely environment. Tilly and Logan are both likeable characters, and Aunt Joy is the aunt we all need. Weaved through their story are 2 depictions of grief, both showing us ways in which love is a double-edged sword. To lose the one you love can mean losing yourself, it can also make you appreciate the beauty life has to offer.
This isn't really a 3-star book, more like 3.5+. My only critiques are that I found the first half of the book repetitive; we didn't need to be reminded so many times about Tilly and Logan's bonding at boarding school. I felt that the book didn't quite reach the level of anticipation that it could have, and I would have loved more Aunt Joy.
This isn't just a love story. It's a story of relationships in all their forms. Family, friends, ourselves, and our environment. How these relationships can both hurt and connect us. This is definitely a good summer read.
This was my first encounter with a book by Kate Frost, and I appreciated the overall story. However, I found the title "One Scottish Summer" somewhat misleading, as it implies a focus solely on a single summer in Scotland. In reality, the narrative jumps ahead 14 years from that initial summer spent by the three main characters on the Isle of Mull.
The book opens with Tilly and Logan, who have been best friends since their teenage years, reuniting on the Isle of Mull to honour Logan's Aunt Joy. Their shared summer after finishing university was delightful, and it’s clear that Mull holds a special place in their hearts.
Frost does an excellent job of weaving themes of self-discovery, friendship, and love in this slow-burning romance throughout the book. The picturesque setting of the Scottish island, with its lochs, cozy cottages, and breathtaking landscapes, adds depth to the story and invites readers to truly immerse themselves in the experience.
Overall, it's a thoughtful read that offers more than just a glimpse into one summer. While the romance is mild, this aspect contributes to the sweetness of the story, and the vibrant landscapes beautifully enhance the overall atmosphere. I look forward to exploring more of Frost's work in the future!
Thank you LBT for having me on this book review tour and for my gifted copy of this book review tour.
This was a good book. I loved the cover of this book it was just so bright and colorful and really drew me in.
I loved the idea of childhood friends coming together. Tilly and Logan on the island of Mull after Logan’s Aunt Joy died. So this is the first time in 15 years both are single and at a I guess you would say crossroads in their life.
I loved how descriptive the island of Mull was and how just got the full picture of this place. Sounds so nice. I really liked how down to earth Till and Logan are. I especially loved Aunt Joy. She would be the aunt I would want in my life she just seemed so cool.
I liked how this book is so descriptive on the different ways you can grieve a person and how you can also love. I lost my mom and I wish I would have known how to handle it better. I loved her so much but I don’t know how to let her go I lost myself. It’s such a hard thing !!
I really liked that this book wasn’t just a love story it has so much more depth to it and the writing was so well done!!
Overall this is a good read one that will stick with me. Great characters!!
One Scottish Summer by Kate Frost is the kind of book that makes you want to pack a bag, hop on a plane, and completely reset your life in the Highlands.
This story beautifully blends travel, self-discovery, friendship, and slow-burn romance. The Scottish setting is absolutely stunning — the lochs, the cozy cottages, the wild landscapes — all described so vividly that it feels like you’re right there. It’s the perfect escapist read.
What I loved most was the emotional journey. The heroine isn’t just finding love; she’s rediscovering herself. Her growth feels realistic and relatable, especially if you’ve ever felt stuck or at a crossroads in life. The romance develops naturally, without feeling rushed or overly dramatic, which made it all the more satisfying.
The friendships and community elements also added warmth and depth. It’s not just a love story — it’s about healing, courage, and choosing happiness.
If you enjoy feel-good women’s fiction with heart, gorgeous settings, and a gentle romance, this is a perfect summer read.
Would definitely recommend for fans of escapist romance and anyone craving a Scottish getaway between the pages.
Tilly and Logan have been best friends since they were both lonely children at boarding school. When they were twenty one, they spent an idyllic summer together with Logan's Aunty Joy on the beautiful island of Mull. One drunken evening they promise each other that, if they are still both single when they are thirty five, they will marry each other. Their paths diverged, Tilly becoming a property developer and Logan a leatherworker. But now, following the death of Joy, they are back together on the island of Mull and they are about to be thirty five...
The Mull setting was beautifully described and the Mull tourist information service should be selling copies of it to entice people to visit! I love the relationship between Tilly and Logan and Tilly's concern that pursuing a relationship with Logan will destroy their precious friendship and the will they/won't they vibe throughout the book. There were lots of wonderful complications with exes and assumed exes which added another layer of interest to the story. I enjoyed the different characters and the changing pace and feel - including romance, grief, regret and hope. A real heart warming story.
- Friends to lovers - Slow burn - Small town romance - Emotional
I had the pleasure of reading this book and it was a beautiful story. Set in a small Scottish island town, the descriptions of the scenery really made me feel as if I was there.
The story begins while Tilly and Logan spend the summer with Logan's Aunt Joy. They have been friends for years, but although Logan pines for Tilly, she has him firmly in the friend zone. The story then jumps over a decade later and the two are not as close of friends as they had been, but still stay in touch a bit. However, they are both back at the island, this time to pack up and sort Aunt Joy's things. One of the things is a beautiful journel that Aunt Joy specifically wanted Tilly to have. Back in the summer Tilly stayed on the island, she wrote in a journel often, which inspired Aunt Joy to begin journelling herself.
The journel is a key item to this story. It connects the past to the present, helps Tilly work through some of her past issues and makes her reconsider her feelings toward Logan.
This is a super slow burn romance, but the journey is what makes this book such a special read.
Ironic that I read it in the week when his death was announced but this book reminded me of Dawson's Creek which continued into adulthood. I didn't warm to Tilly and couldn't quite see what all the men saw in her?! She seemed to just use men for sex and I couldn't really understand her. Logan was just like Dawson pining after the girl he'd fallen in love with as a teenager.
Having visited Mull I could picture the places and the scenery and it reminded me how stunning the island is. I do know though that the ferries aren't always reliable and it can be cut off at times but the book painted a picture of it just being an easy pop-over to the mainland.
It was the first book I have read by the author and whilst it didn't grab me I would like to read further titles if they are set in Scotland as the authors description of the scenery and the places was well written.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and author for allowing me to read and review an Arc copy.
Logan and Tilly have been best friends since they met aged thirteen. For Logan his feelings changed the year they spent a summer with his aunt Joy in Mull when they finished university but loathe to lose their friendship he never made a move on her. Now 15 years later they are both on Mull, after Joy’s death, to clear and refurbish the cottage. Both are still single but Logan still is unsure about risking the status quo, especially as Tilly has a habit of running if relationships appear to be deepening. However his aunt never agreed with him not pursuing a relationship and leaves her journal with her thoughts on love, family and happiness to Tilly. A gentle story of growth, finding your soulmate and healing from the past, all set with wonderful descriptions of the cottage’s location on Mull. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
One Scottish Summer by Kate Frost is a contemporary fiction novel with a touch of romance. It is scheduled to be published on February 24, 2026.
Many of the books I've read published by Boldwood Books have some things in common: a travel element, some romance, and generally well-written tropes. This book is no exception as it is a pretty good version of the best friends to lovers trope, set in a small town in Scotland and it involves some heavier themes including grief.
Tilly and Logan have been friends since childhood, but never considered more. Things start to change with the passing of a beloved relative and the journal she leaves behind. While I don't think this book will be very memorable, it was enjoyable to read.
Thank you very much to Boldwood Books for allowing me to read and review an advance reader copy of this book via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This was my first time reading a Kate Frost romance and it was okay but not really my thing. Closed door romance (okay, nothing wrong with that) but I did not take to the dithering female lead, the constant rehashing of her feelings or the way she handled them. While the descriptions of Mull and the nearby Hebridean islands were very evocative, they also slowed the pace of the plot. I finished but it took me a push to get there. Neighbor Ivor and the recently passed but universally loved Joy and their stories were some secondary highlights, but the main romance had an awful lot of pauses and I too often felt sorry for the male lead.
Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
I quite enjoyed this book. It’s so clear from the start that Tilly and Logan are a great match, just don’t see it themselves. Isle of Mull seems a glorious place and I truly enjoyed following Tilly and Logan’s adventure there and discovering their history and the secrets of the island. The story is easy and interesting to follow and Joy’s writings brings a lovely bit to the story. The characters are well written and I really enjoyed how much thought has been put into the smaller characters also, it makes the community very strong and makes the story feel more real. All in all, this is a very lovely story that is a lot more than just a romance novel. I really enjoyed it!

Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book. 4 Stars. Tilly and best friend Logan spend a happy Summer after graduating from Edinburgh University on the Isle of Mull with Logan’s Aunt Joy. Fourteen years later and approaching their respective thirty-fifth birthdays they return to Mull to celebrate Joy’s life. Logan has inherited Joy’s house and interior designer and property developer Tilly has agreed to come and help get the house and holiday cottage up together so Logan can decide what to do. Joy had kept a journal which she has given to Tilly with heartfelt sentiments and advice. Will Tilly and Logan find happiness together? I really liked this storyline and I was willing Tilly to wake up and realise her feelings for Logan.
So beautiful! Such a gorgeous story of a friendship that becomes so much more, an aunt’s love that would bring the two even closer and all set in The Isle of Mull, a picturesque place in Scotland. Tilly and Logan were amazing characters both flawed in some ways regarding relationships but always finding their way back to each other, no matter what was happening in their lives. There were lovely side characters that appeared that also enhanced and enriched the storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed Tilly and Logan’s story and highly recommended reading this sweet story. Thank you to Kate Frost, NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read this book.
I love the settings in Kate Frost's books, she makes each one so magical and special. Here, she works her magic on the Scottish island of Mull and its inhabitants.
This is a slow-burning romantic story between Caitlin and Logan, best friends since childhood. At times, Caitlin's dithering is frustrating, but as you delve deeper into the story things become clearer and you understand her character more.
With a backdrop of stormy skies and craggy mountains, grouchy neighbours and various residents, this is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the Scottish countryside. Another beautiful story from Kate Frost that I highly recommend!
Joyful, scenic, friendships, love and coming home. This was a lovely book. Logan’s aunt Joy has died, she was his roots and his home. Tilly is his best friend and has been since they bonded at boarding school. Mull was Joys home and a place both Logan and Tilly loved and visited together, it had many memories for them and them being together for the first time in 14 years there was dizzying with emotions. This had a great storyline, the scenery was breathtaking and this was a great read. Thank you NetGalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Boldwood Books, NetGalley and author Kate Frost for this eARC.
Unfortunately One Scottish Summer did not work for me. I was annoyed by both our MCs - Logan for his absolute lack of a spine and Tilly because she was SO oblivious and indecisive. I just wanted to shake/slap both of them! There was also no tension because Tilly didn’t realize this was a romance until like 3/4 of the way in. I did love the beautiful description of the Isle of Mull and I now kinda want to go visit because it sounds gorgeous, idyllic and peaceful!
One Scottish Summer was not the romance book that I expected from the synopsis of the book. It was a beautiful description of the island Mull but full on romance book, not so much. It was much more a heartfelt book about people dealing with grief after the death of loved ones, righting past mistakes and trying to figure out what to do in your adult like because you are unhappy currently. As these 2 old friends(Tilly & Logan) pickup they are dealing with the deal of his aunt, who was like a mom to both of them. All the sweet memories that they have of her and each other are lovely. The community all coming together to celebrate her and also help another member that needs them. As they build up their relation ship and are getting ready to return to their current lives, things are planned and said that changes the outcome. I enjoyed the super long ending about how everyone was in the end.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.
An excellent friends to lovers romance set in the gorgeous Scottish island of Mull. Tilly, Logan, and Logan's aunt are very relatable characters. Beautiful setting and lovable characters make it a wonderfully holiday read. Logan's aunt, Joy, was an amazing woman, so wise and caring. Reading about her love through her journals was heartwarming and added the charm to Tilly and Logan's own story. Their relationship survived through ups and downs, but their love for each other never fades. A cozy feel-good novel with feelings and memories. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC.
As a big fan of Frosts’ escapist novels I truly enjoyed the setting on the Isle of Mull for this book.
Unfortunately the plot was quite slow and dragging. I liked the idea of two old friends meeting up and transitioning from friendship to a romantic relationship however the dialogues (and internal monologues) were very repetitive which sometimes made it hard to continue reading. And I sometimes felt they were acting like teenagers and not people in their mid-thirties.
I am still a big fan of Frost’s landscape descriptions however this book was lacking some plot twists.
What a sweet, sweet story! I absolutely loved this story of best friends falling in love and all the stuff that happens from the beginning of the book to the end (you have to read it to find out for yourself!). I also loved Logan, his Aunt Joy, and Tilly as well as the growth we see, especially in Logan and Tilly, as they go from young college graduates to established adults 15 years into the future. The Isle of Mull also sounds amazing and a place I would absolutely love to live.
If you’re a fan of sweet romance, then I think you’ll like One Scottish Summer. 5 out of 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was lovely, enjoyable and heartwarming read. Tilly and Logan have been friends since meeting at boarding school. When they were 21 they spent the best summer together on the Isle of Mull with Logan’s aunt Joy, and now they are back together in the same house sorting Joys things and reminiscing about the past.
I really enjoyed this book, and all the characters, I do hope Rosie gets her own book as I think she has a good story to tell.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
This book was in a gorgeous setting, it was a sweet story of friendship over the years I loved both Tilly and Logan and really enjoyed the concept of the promise they made when they were younger. The writing drew me in and I could picture the characters and setting, it also gave a depth to the story that made it a journey more than just a romance. A new author to me but I would definitely love to read more books.
A nice cozy read. The author did an excellent job of describing the Isle of Mull. I had a very vivid picture in my head of what the Isle looked like and the general ambiance of being there. I did feel like there were some side characters and romances that weren't all that developed. The reader is plopped into the side romances (relationships from the past) and you don't generally understand why the prior relationships are that important. Overall, I enjoyed the book and would read other books by this author.
An enjoyable and entertaining read, set on a beautiful, idyllic Scottish island. The story details one summer when Logan and Tilly, best friends, have just finished university. They go to the island of Mull to visit Logan’s Aunt Joy. Fourteen years later they return to Mull, soon after Joy has breathed her last. I liked the use of Joy’s journal to tell key parts of the story.
A lovely book about finding confidence to follow your heart and looking at what you can trust. I enjoyed the main characters, a beautiful setting and the use of a journal to allow a narrative and sharing of wisdom.
