One Liner: More of women’s fiction with healing vibes

The unhappy relationship Hannah left also depleted her confidence. She secretly dreams of owning a bakery but feels too vulnerable to do it. Then, her brother Ben, the owner of the Maple Tree Lodge, asks her to open a café in the newly renovated boathouse. Hannah is not sure she can do it.

Champion triathlete and Ben’s best friend, Alex Grant, accepts his friend’s offer to stay at his family lodge for a while and figure things out. He has always had a crush on Hannah and wants to hope for a better future for himself and her.

As the summer lights up the small town, can Hannah and Alex get what they want?

The story comes in Hannah and Alex’s third-person POVs.

My Thoughts

The second book in the series can be a standalone, but it might help to read book #1, as the setting and many side characters repeat. Moreover, the relationships between the characters are established in that one, so there’s a sense of knowing the backstory.

That said, we get detailed background information on both MCs early in the book (almost like info-dumping). While the FMC has confidence issues and feels insecure, the MMC is plain exhausted from pushing himself to achieve someone else’s dream.

They are both sweet and lovely people, trying to find what they want and how to get it. Since the book goes the women’s fiction way, the actual romance is more of a subplot and doesn’t really start until after the midpoint. I wasn’t expecting it to take that much time, TBH.

The side characters continue to be interesting. And we have a new addition, Tiny, a cute (not little at all) puppy. Tiny is a Newfoundland, so he is rather enthusiastic, clingy, and super adorable.

There’s mention of a few delicious cakes, pastries, and desserts, as well as some colorful cocktails. I always enjoy it when food is a part of the plot, and with so much sweet-tasting stuff here, I'm on a cloud of spun sugar, lol.

The romance is pretty low-key. It is friends-to-lovers, and given that the characters tiptoe around the issue for a long time, there isn’t much drama. Just a wee one that was expected. It was necessary for the FMC, though I think it came a bit too late. That said, there’s no third-act breakup (had to fit it in anyway), so yay there.

To summarize, Daydreaming at the Boathouse Café is a cozy and heartwarming read. While it feels languid, the development works well. Just that my expectations were a bit different.

Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

This book was a solid fine for me. Two characters trying to figure out what their individual dreams actually look like while also falling for each other is always a cute story. I really liked Alex’s experience trying to pull away from a dream that was determined for him, while Hannah worked hard to establish herself in a new role she was thrust into but actually wanted deep down. It was a cute story, but I felt there were wayyy too many side characters to keep track of and the plot pacing was off for me. Overall, fun small town romance!

Daydreaming at the Boathouse Cafe
by Alison Sherlock
The Inn on the Lake #2

Returning to Maple Tree Lodge and the serene Dragonfly Lake is nothing short of a heartfelt reunion. Readers are invited back into this charming world to reconnect with the beloved cast of characters introduced in the first book. The story pivots around Hannah Jackson, who has previously decided to return to her family’s struggling hotel, Maple Tree Lodge, as it faces a critical turning point. With the lodge's survival hanging in the balance, it becomes evident that innovative strategies to attract guests and boost revenue are of utmost importance; otherwise, the family risks losing their treasured legacy.

Hannah is a character with whom I can deeply empathise. Emerging from a tumultuous and unhappy relationship, she battles not only her self-confidence but also her faith in finding true love and trust again. With an intense passion for baking and a long-held dream of launching her own bakery, she embarks on a journey filled with challenges, supported by her loving family.

Hannah struggles with chronic self-doubt and the scars of her past abusive relationship. Additionally, her dyslexia and her belief in her ability to open and run a café leave her frightened and scared once again. Nevertheless, her resilience transforms her journey of self-discovery into one that is both powerful and uplifting. As Alex patiently helps Hannah navigate the ordering system and helps with the café's accounts, she begins to notice qualities in her brother's best friend that she had never considered before. His attentive demeanour and easy smile make her heart race, stirring feelings that go beyond mere friendship. She finds herself captivated by his charm and physique and caring nature, realising that there’s much more to him than she had previously recognised.

Alex Grant finds himself at a significant crossroads. Once a promising world-class triathlon competitor and a favourite to win gold at the Commonwealth Games, an unexpected accident suddenly halts his career trajectory. Seeking solace, he accepts an invitation from his friend Ben to recuperate at Maple Tree Lodge. This respite at the lodge not only offers him physical healing but also grants him the opportunity to reevaluate his life’s ambitions. As he begins to question whether the relentless pursuit of gold is what he truly desires, he also starts to explore deeper questions about ambition and happiness. As he spends more time with Hannah, he finds himself reflecting on the qualities that first drew him to her all those years ago when she was just his best friend's little sister. Now, as they share deeper conversations and create new memories, he recognises the warmth and intelligence that have blossomed in her over the years. Each moment spent together reminds him of the bond they share and the undeniable connection that seems to have grown stronger with time.

Throughout the book, themes of rediscovery, personal growth, and the importance of second chances resonate powerfully. The development of both Hannah and Alex is painted with tenderness and genuine support, fostering an uplifting dynamic that keeps readers invested in their journeys. The hotel setting is described with vivid detail, allowing readers to easily conjure images of the rustic lodge, the picturesque beauty of the lake, and the charming boathouse where so many pivotal moments unfold.

Adding to the rich tapestry of the narrative are the delightful secondary characters, including Tiny, the lovable dog, Grandmother Dotty or the quirky members of the local Swimming Club, who contribute layers of depth and humour to the story. Their interactions create a strong sense of community that encapsulates the heart and soul of Maple Tree Lodge.

As the story unfolds, one can't help but wonder who will take centre stage in the next book? Will it be the vibrant personality of Beth or Ella with her stylish flair? With such captivating characters and a picturesque setting, readers are left eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this enchanting series.

I found the first chapter of this hard going, as there were just too many characters to keep track of. The book could benefit from having a character list at the beginning to refer back to.

Hannah and Alex were well created characters with interesting backstories. I felt for them both:for Hannah and her shyness and Alex and his dad’s attitude. One of the highlights of the book was when he stood up to him.

Daydreaming at the Boathouse Café seemed predictable to me, and I was pulled out of the story by the feeling that many things just didn’t fit. To me, it seemed contradictory that Hannah, who was portrayed as shy and lacking in confidence, would make friends so quickly in London. I felt her experience there was over too quickly.

Tiny the dog was very cute.

The pacing was fast, but I felt like that didn’t benefit the book, as nothing happened for much of the story.

Writing style: too many word echoes.

I liked Ella and her style of fashion and beauty. I also liked Beth and Lily and their personalities and spontaneity.
I was really proud of the way Hannah stood up to Alex’s dad. I like Hannah’s grandmother Dottie and how well they got on as well as how she supported her life and dreams. Molly was kind. I think the boathouse and café should have been part of the plot much earlier. Dotty’s swim club was fun. My interest in the story picked up around chapter 32/ 58% which was very late, and the plot seemed a little more fluid.
However, I still feel the story wasn’t very memorable. For me, the book would’ve been so much better if it would’ve had the plot and pacing of chapter 32 onwards throughout.

There are a LOT of sweet treats in the book, and they are mentioned very quickly every time they are. I would have liked more detail there, as baking is something Hannah seems confident about. I wanted to be a witness to the baking process, the sights, smells, and tastes. It seems like the sweet treats were just mentioned in passing, and that’s it.

I think the hotel, boat house, and the café came together quite well in the end. There was a lot of talk about what they’d do to create the atmosphere and services they wanted there, though, and that felt a bit too long winded. I would have liked to have seen more of the process behind creating everything they wanted to for the boathouse and café. It seemed to happen too perfectly with too few setbacks.

I did like Hannah and Alex, but the development of the banter between them seemed very slow burn. Overall, I didn’t find the book romantic enough, though I was proud of Hannah and what she achieved both personally and professionally. I found the final line in the book too cliché.

Hannah loves to bake and secretly dreams of opening her own bakery but her chronic self-doubt in her own abilities, dyslexia and a previously abusive relationship has stripped any confidence that she might have, pushing her dream far out of reach.
But when her brother, Ben, asks for her help opening a new cafe at Maple Tree Lodge in a stunning lakeside location Hannah is thrown into turmoil. Can she conquer her demons and bring her dream to life?

Alex is a world class triathlon competitor and the odds on favourite to win gold at the Commonwealth Games.
But when a freak accident leaves Alex injured and unable to compete or train he starts to reevaluate his whole life. Does he really want to spend every waking moment in pursuit of gold or is he looking for something more?

Daydreaming at the Boathouse Cafe is a beautiful mix of facing up to self-doubt, finding love, delicious baking and open water swimming! Plus there’s a rather gorgeous Newfoundland puppy called Tiny on the scene who can’t fail to steal your heart.

Although Daydreaming at the Boathouse Cafe is part of a series it absolutely works as a standalone novel and I didn’t feel that I had missed anything by not having read the previous book in the Maple Tree Lodge series. There is a wonderful delicacy to Sherlock’s writing, past events are alluded to, giving the reader the perfect amount of prior knowledge and understanding about what had taken place previously, without feeling like you are being repeatedly thrashed with a big ‘previously at Maple Tree Lodge’ stick. Characters are introduced with enough sensitivity so that you come to love them.

Daydreaming at the Boathouse Cafe is a beautifully easy book to read, not too challenging and a real treat if you are looking for an escape from your daily grind.
If you’re looking for smut, then this isn’t for you - but if you’re looking for a sweet, feel-good romance that will leave you feeling positive and cosy then I would highly recommend picking up this offering from Alison Sherlock.

Cosy contemporary romance at its very best.

This was a cozy, quick countryside romance that felt comforting while I was reading it.

The story follows Hannah, who returns to her family’s hotel, Maple Tree Lodge, after a really bad relationship has completely shaken her confidence. She secretly dreams of having her own bakery, but when her brother suggests she run a café in a renovated boathouse by the lake, she’s full of self-doubt and not sure she can actually pull it off. At the same time, Alex (Ben’s best friend and a medal-winning triathlete) is there to support them, even joins a race, but gets injured (Cue the giant dog named Tiny). And the family invites him to recover there. He’s had a quiet crush on Hannah for years, so the timing suddenly gives him a chance to rethink his future and maybe finally tell her how he feels.

The book mainly follows Hannah rebuilding her confidence, setting up the café, and slowly rediscovering herself, with Alex supporting her while he figures out life beyond competitive sport. There’s a lot of small-town warmth, supportive family moments, and that gentle friends-to-lovers vibe.

I really liked the themes of rediscovering yourself and starting over. Hannah’s development, and Alex came across as kind, patient, and genuinely supportive, which was nice to read. The overall tone is soft and comforting, and it’s a very easy, fast read.

At the same time, it didn’t leave a huge impression once I finished. It was pleasant and sweet, but not especially memorable. Still, if you want a cozy, low-drama romance with family support, self-growth, and a lakeside summer setting, this is a solid pick.

This was a delightfully cosy read. The second book in the Inn on the Lake Series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Alison gives you enough to know what went on in the first book and introduces the characters so well. If anything it’s made me want to go back and read the first. This is story of Hannah and Alex, two people learning to trust again. Hannah has recently left an abusive relationship and confidence is at an all time low. Her brother’s best friend Alex has been training for the Commonwealth Games, he’s recently been cheated on my his ex-girlfriend.

Hannah has returned home to Maple Tree Lodge, her family’s hotel. The hotel is running a charity triathlon and Alex is competing, he injured himself and end up staying to recover. The two end up finding the perfect roles in the hotel and then each other. I enjoyed getting to only both Hannah and Alex and see them healing. For Hannah it was great to see her confidence grow as the bakery becomes successful. For Alex it was interesting to see the intense pressure his family placed on him to compete and then seeing himself find is own passions.

The hotel setting was delightful. I could picture the hotel, lake and boat shed. I loved all the secondary characters including Tiny the dog and the Old Girls Swimming Club. I was so keen to check in and have Frankie’s cocktails under the fairy lights. I read this over Easter and it was very fitting with all its talk of hot cross buns and Easter biscuits. A gorgeous cosy romance set in the Cotswolds. Perfect for lovers of brothers best friend, miscommunication,
forced proximity and found family tropes.

I enjoyed Coming Home to Maple Tree Lodge so I was excited to read Daydreaming at the Boathouse Cafe. The author has done an amazing job of creating the fictional Maple Tree Lodge and Dragonfly Lake. They’re described so beautifully that if they were real, I’d definitely want to book a stay. In the first book, the focus was on renovating the lodge and it was interesting to read about the expansion to include Hannah’s new café and using the lake as a water sports centre.
I really felt for Hannah because she’s such a kind person and obviously has a real talent for baking but she’s struggled with dyslexia and her confidence was shattered by an abusive ex-boyfriend. It was lovely to watch her slowly grow in confidence throughout the book and end up thriving as a business owner.
Alex is at a crossroads too after a freak injury ends his chances of competing in the triathlon at the Commonwealth Games. He’s perfect for Hannah because he’s equally kind. He’s been in love with her since the day they first met when he came to the lodge with her brother, his friend from university but he’s respectful and won’t make a move until he’s certain she feels the same way. Their friendship helps both of them navigate the changes in their lives.
Hannah’s family and their friends provide great supporting characters but the real scene-stealer is Tiny, the Newfoundland that Alex adopts. I had a smile on my face whenever he was in a scene and his disruption of Alex’s first attempt at paddleboarding was hilarious.

Hannah has big dreams but lately life hasn't been nice to her. She lacks confidence and holds lots of uncertainty in regards to her future. Her previous relationship really did a number on her. So when her brother Ben, who runs the family hotel Maple Tree Lodge, suggests she come and open a new café, she jumps at the opportunity. Alex is injured and needs a place to recuperate and rethink his career and love life. He is a triathlon competitor and a pretty good one at that. Ben suggest Alex come and stay at the hotel to get some rest and heal. Alex will be very happy at the hotel because he has always had a crush on Hannah.

Lovely, sweet and cozy romance story. Hannah and Alex were perfect romance characters and so well developed. You can feel Hannah and her struggles and yet you continue to root for her and her delicious baking. Poor Alex, he is hurting outside and inside as well. I enjoyed watching them both grow, heal and learn to trust again. I really liked the side characters and there were plenty to choose from. The swimming club was something that I would be interested in and getting to know the old girls. Tiny the dog stole the show of course.

Hannah returned to her family at The Maple Tree Lodge Hotel after a disastrous relationship wrecked her self-confidence. Alex, a long time friend of the family, is a medal winning athlete who comes a cropper at a charity event held around the lake. When Hannah's brother Ben suggests that she runs the new cafe at the lake making use of her baking skills she is unsure whether she could make a go of it. He also suggests that Alex, who secretly has a crush on Hannah for years, stays at the Lodge to recover from his injury.
Now this is the kind of book that I love, I haven't read the first one in the series (yet) but I was immediately drawn into the story. I could relate to Hannah's self-doubt and Alex, despite his physical prowess, also comes across as the kind, gentle person that I aspire to be. Add the supportive family and friends, together with the dream location and I also mustn't forget the Newfoundland dog Tiny who is star of the book. A lovely book to immerse yourself in and forget your troubles, 4.5*rounded up to 5*.

Hannah Jackson is living with her family at their family hotel who her big brother Ben runs while she works at the village pub as a waitress . When her brother asks her to run the cafe in the renovated boathouse on Dragonfly Lake she is worring that she will not be enough . Everyone who has eaten her cakes only give praises for them . Alex Grant is one of Ben's best friends and while he was competing in the triathlon at the Commonwealth Games got injured . With his leg broken and six weeks free he deside to stay and help with use of the lake and the water sports . Alex has been in love with Hannah from the first time they had met but then she was in a relationship but now that they spent so much time together he is sure that they could be together . Hannah is second guessing everything thanks to her dylexia and her ex who always made her feel unworthy and week . Will Jake make her realize that not all men are the same ?

Brilliant book it the series. The boat house is lush, beautiful, perfect for new beginnings. Hannah has been home since she had a bad relationship with Sean. Her confidence, self belief and pride has been badly damaged. She has even lost the self belief that she can bake. When a sad accident harms her brothers best friend in a triathlon accident she looks after Alex and bakes for him. When the opportunity to run the boat house cafe arrises she has to dig deep to gain the strength and self belief that she can do it.
Alex offers to help her with the books as she is dyslexic. When the cafe get off to a slow start she has a wobble but then when they decide to promote the lake as an event it takes off.
Working along side Alex re sparks the crush she has had on him for years. A drunken kiss has the flames stoked.
This book is great and has all the signs of being a great long standing series.
The characters are great and really worth investing. Thank you NetGalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.

This was a sweet, gentle romance. This is book 2 in the series but can be read as a standalone. Hannah is living with her family at the Maple Tree Lodge at Dragonfly Lake, which is owned by the family and run by her brother, Ben. She lacks confidence and self-esteem following a really bad relationship. Alex is one of Ben's best friends and is at the Lodge for a weekend and to take part in a triathlon. After getting injured during the race, Ben offers for him to stay for the summer while he recovers. Hannah has always dreamed of having her own teashop and when the person Ben hired to open the new Boathouse Cafè pulls out at the last minute, Ben asks Hannah to run it. Slowly but surely Alex helps Hannah regain her confidence, while at the same time Alex heals and also gets involved in the hotel's business. A beautiful story, with lovely characters (including a crazy dog!), all in a lovely setting.

This book is such a cosy and easy read that kept me glued to it. After leaving a difficult relationship, Hannah Jackson struggles with self-doubt but is given a fresh start when she’s asked to open a café at her family’s lakeside hotel. As she rebuilds her confidence, Alex Grant who is recovering from an injury and secretly in love with her, begins to rethink his own future. Over a heartfelt summer by the lake, both Hannah and Alex discover new beginnings, healing, and the courage to follow their dreams.

The characters are well developed and include every aspect needed to showcase a closely knit community. The romance blossoming between the two main characters is so heartwarming, and the author has managed to make readers feel giddy with their moments together. What I loved most was the appearance of characters from the author’s backlist series and one of them being Dodgy Dell, who adds a lovely humorous touch to the story.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves cosy romances with small-town charm, heartfelt moments, and a touch of humour.

It was great to be back at Maple Tree Lodge catching up with everyone. Hannah and Alex are a great couple, both with issues to work through but finding comfort and calm with each other.

Hannah was easy to identify with, her lack of confidence stemming from a past relationship. It’s so easy to believe the negative things said to you when they come from someone you believe loves you. Even, like Hannah if you’re brave enough to break free, the scars run very deep and there is no set amount of time to over come them. Alex sees that she’s struggling with her confidence and even without knowing the true reason offers help and support in a way that helps Hannah believe in herself. I loved his quiet championing for her.

The friendship they built first, whilst trying to ignore their feelings, and take others feelings into account really helped build their solid foundation, and I loved when they finally gave in and acted from the heart.

A great read, and can be read as a stand-alone. I can’t wait for the next instalment.

The first book I've read by the author and I'm now looking up everything else she has written!

A great easy and enjoyable read; perfect for before bed! I liked the characters, the setting and the storyline was lovely. I found myself longing for a dog like Tiny and his heroics in the lake brought tears to my eyes! The storyline showed how someone's past experiences can have such a negative impact on their future life and how hard it is to forget the past (something I myself suffer from; I only hope one day I can find Hannah's courage). I didn't realise this was book two in the series and it works well as a standalone title (although I'll now go back and read the first book!)

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys light hearted romance and stories about "everyday life".

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and of course the author for allowing me to read and review a preview copy.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book, given to me by Boldwood Books via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A sweet romance culminates a long-term friendship and a secret crush in “Daydreaming at the Boathouse Cafe”, by Alison Sherlock, where an insecure heroine and a caring hero finally admit their feelings.
I liked Alex’s journey in the career field and the courage to make such a drastic change due to a small (but life-changing) accident.
Hannah’s lack of confidence, shyness and issues are poignant and I enjoyed watching her succeed with the café project.
It was endearing to watch the hero yearn for the heroine in silence.
The generosity and will to help each other and among family and friends is heartwarming.
I liked how the author handled Alex’s father reactions and progress about his son’s career change, it was well thought out.
The dog, Tiny, is a refreshing, cute, presence in the story.
I felt the story could be shorter.

What a fun, wholesome romance! Hannah's family inn has been hit with rough times and it's up to her and her brother Ben to find ways to produce the income necessary to support the three generation making the Maple Tree Lodge profitable. With the help of family and friends, the siblings set about keeping the family home and increasing its revenue sources. Ben's friend Alex is spending the summer with the family and offers his support, in addition to his friendship.

As Hannah and Alex work together their friendship strengthens as they both try to overcome their ghosts of past relationships and family dynamics. The descriptions of the lodge and its Dragonfly Lake are carefully crafted, as is the sweet story line.

If you enjoy lighthearted, wholesome romances, you'll definitely want to read this!

Hannah returns to Mapel Tree Lodge after leaving a nasty relationship, where she’s taken up part time work here and there, can her dream role be in the lodge’s temporary cafe her brother wants to open up? After all the lodges guests and family love her bakes.
Alex is one of Hannahs brothers best friends and staying at the lodge to compete in the first lodge triathlon, unfortunately he doesn’t win but breaks his foot, forcing him to stop competing and take a look at what he wants in life. Can he tell Hannah how he feels about her, will it ruin his friendship with her brother. Can he find something he’s passionate about.
This book is heartwarming from start to finish. Hannah grows in confidence, with the help of her family, best friends and her brothers best friends, and of course Tiny, the not so tiny puppy. Alex does what he wants for a change. Throw in a few strong cocktails and some amazing friendships made this book has everything you need.

Absolutely lovely. I enjoyed returning to The Maple Tree Lodge for the second book in the series. Daydreaming at the Boathouse Cafe is such an enjoyable and cozy read perfect for when you need to unwind.

Hannah dreams of opening her own bakery, but after leaving an unhappy relationship, Hannah has little confidence in herself or love. When her brother Ben, who owns their family run hotel, The Maple Tree Lodge, asks her to open a cafe in the renovated boathouse on Dragonfly Lake, Hannah is consumed with self-doubt. Ben’s best friend champion triathlete Alex Grant finds himself at a crossroads after suffering an injury and accepts Ben’s offer to recuperate at the Maple Tree Lodge. Alex has had a longtime crush on Hannah and is hoping to find a new future for himself and one that includes Hannah.

The whole setting feels like a warm hug, and Hannah and Alex’s romance was sweet and uplifting. Ben was the best brother to Hannah encouraging her to believe in herself. A fabulous setting, lovely characters, and a place I’d love to visit. I’m so looking forward to the next book in the series.

Thank you Netgalley, Boldwood Books, and the author for the opportunity to read and review this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

This is an adoreable read. It’s the 2nd book in The Inn on the Lake
series, which I was actually unaware of. However I don’t feel that I had any trouble following the story/its characters, so would happily suggest that it can easily be read as a standalone or in reversed order.

Set in a small lakeside town, this story has everything a romcom needs:
a blossoming romance
loads of love in general
charming characters
a dog
café and cakes
hopes, dreams, self doubt and solutions

This is a super cozy summer read that I’d recommend to anyone who is into romance and a read that feels like a big hug.

This was the first book that I’ve read by this author, but I’m already looking forward to catching up with the 1st book of this series.

Another new author to me and I believe this is the second book of 3. This story is fine to be read as a standalone or part of the series.

Alison writes the story and characters with good detail and you can’t help love them all but one.

We follow alternate chapters with Hannah and Alex.
While it’s clear where the story is heading, it covers a variety of issues such as trust, family love and breakdowns, friendship, confidence and most of all love. Both Hannah and Alex need to learn to find themselves again, and with the help of friends, family and each other start to overcome their doubts and realise they mean more to each other than just friends.

A whole community pulling together to support Maple lodge Hall and the Boathouse Cafe.

A lovely, warm story and look forward to book 3

Daydreaming at the Boathouse Café is the second book in The Inn on the Lake series. Hannah just got out of really bad relationship with Sean and her self-esteem was bruised badly. She had lost confidence in her baking ability. Things take turn when her brother Ben friend is injured and Hannah steps in to help. This book was filled with a lot of emotion and true caring.
I highly recommend this book to fill your heart and mind with a lot as you read. It can be read as a standalone, but I know you will enjoy this second book so much you will want to read the first book in the series.
Thank you NetGalley, Alison Sherlock and Boldwood Books for the Arc of the book Daydreaming at the Boathouse Café. This is my personal review.

It's a lovely story full of heartwarming and supportive family and friends. Hannah is recovering from an abusive relationship, and being with her family is the best way to do this. She is a talented baker but lacks the confidence to pursue it as a career. Alex's life has always been about the next race, but he realises that it's his dad's dream, not his. When an unfortunate accident temporarily ends his competing ambitions, he decides he wants something else. Circumstances allow Alex and Hannah to spend time together, which changes their relationship. The narrative explores confidence and trust, and the couple embarks on a journey of self-discovery. It's an uplifting read.

This was a delightful book with interesting characters and a very good story. I look forward to reading the next one..

Amazon synopsis:
After leaving an unhappy relationship, Hannah Jackson has no confidence in herself or love. The only thing she secretly dreams of is her own bakery. But when her brother Ben, the owner of their family run hotel Maple Tree Lodge, asks her to open a cafe in the renovated boathouse on Dragonfly Lake, Hannah is consumed with self-doubt.

Due to an injury, Ben’s best friend and champion triathlete Alex Grant finds himself suddenly at a crossroads in his life and accepts Ben’s offer to recuperate at Maple Tree Lodge. Nursing a secret, longtime crush for Hannah, Alex is hoping that he can find a new future for himself and that it might somehow include Hannah.

Can Hannah overcome her lack of confidence and make the boathouse cafe a success? And can Alex find himself a new path and finally admit to Hannah how he really feels?

Over a magical summer by the lake, and with the help of a stray puppy, Hannah and Alex discover if all of their dreams really can come true.

This was my first Alison Sherlock read. This is a sweet friends to lovers story set in a small lakeside town in the UK. While the story centers on the two main characters and their journey to become more than just friends the surrounding family members enrich the story and really paint a picture of what the town and community is all about. I enjoyed seeing the personal journey of the two main characters and how their growth leads them to a relationship neither one of them thought they could have with each other or anyone else. If you like friends to lovers romance stories I recommend you read this.

I’m really enjoying this series, and Daydreaming at the Boathouse Café was a nice continuation. There’s something about this setting that just feels so cozy and easy to slip back into. I look forward to returning to it and catching up with the characters.

This one had a great mix of light, feel-good moments and a bit of emotional depth, which kept me engaged the whole way through. It’s the kind of book that’s perfect when you want something comforting but still meaningful.

Overall, another really enjoyable read, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next one!

Thank you NetGalley & Boldwood Books for sending this book for review consideration.

I really enjoy reading all of Alison's books. There's something so comforting about the characters and the setting. Every time I start one it's like returning to old friends or family.

We have met both Hannah and Alex before, but now we really get to know their story. Hannah really struggled when she fled from London, but had made a quiet life for herself surrounded by family and friends. In this story she really comes alive again, no more hiding from the world, and she finally starts to believe in herself. I loved how she grew in this story! Alex was just the perfect Golden Retriever kind of MMC... it was impossible not to love him and Tiny was just the cherry on top!

This story is pleasant, but it is awfully dull. I could put it down for days at a time and not think about it because not much happens. That isn't necessarily bad, but Hannah is such a downer. She spent 10 years like this without trying to do anything? I find that difficult to believe. I didn't care for the info dumps or the need to state the subtext. On the other hand, if you are looking for a calm story with mostly pleasant characters, this would do the job.

Hannah had run home to her family’s lake side lodge ten years ago to escape a bad relationship and has been there ever since due to her confidence not recovering in spite on her family’s belief in her. Alex is one of her brother’s best friends and is there competing in their first triathlon when he is in an accident and now needs to recover. This is a wonderful story full of the love of family and friends.
