This book is for BOOMERS who would like to know what its like to volunteer and live in a less developed country, as well as readers who enjoy memoirs, travel, love stories and adventure.
Alastair and Candas, a couple in their sixties, met by chance one day, fell in love, and with a shared passion for life, set off on a new path of travel and adventure.
We shed our material possessions and comfortable Canadian lifestyle to volunteer with local non-governmental organizations in Jamaica and Guyana, and in between assignments, backpacked extensively throughout Central America and S. E. Asia on roads less traveled.
Bearing witness to the poorest of the poor on the streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh to climbing to the top of Kaiteur Falls in Guyana, we realized that there are moments and places in life that need an audience and should be shared. What we did and what we saw, while helping enhance the lives of others, deepened our understanding of the world and ignited in us a desire to continue living examined and purposeful lives.
We’ve shared our experiences, adventures and learnings in our memoirs in the hope that they will inspire other Boomers to “GO FOR IT.”
I followed the London Life Insurance Freedom 55 Plan and retired early at 57 BUT, one year later, I was asking myself "Is This It - Is this all I'm going to do for the rest of my life -cut grass and play golf? I'm only 57!"
Disillusioned with the passivity of retirement, I returned to the workforce with a small First Nations band in a remote location in Canada's far north. The experience resulted in a paradigm shift in how I looked at the world and ignited in me a new passion to help others less fortunate.
When I left the north I went to Bangladesh for two years, and then on to Nigeria, Jamaica, and Guyana as an International Development volunteer with Cuso International
My first memoir, Awakening in the Northwest Territories," is about one man's search for fulfillment, and how he surprisingly found it in Lutsel K'e, a fly-in First Nations hamlet on the east arm of Great Slave Lake in the N.W.T. See www.awakeninginthenorth.com for photos, excerpts and reviews.
My second memoir, "Go For It -Volunteering Adventures on Roads Less Travelled" is specifically written for fellow Boomers to inspire and encourage them to help make a difference in the world by sharing their skills by volunteering internationally.
My third memoir, which I co-wrote with Candas Whitlock is Budget Backpacking for Boomers. It shows how to travel and explore Central America and Southeast Asia for less than $40 per person (travel, lodgings, and food)
My latest book: The Soldier and The Orphan -Separated by Church and War - is a historical fiction/romance/mystery novel about identical twins separated at birth and neither boy knows he has a brother until 32 years later.
I have narrated 'Awakening in the Northwest Territories' and 'The Soldier and The Orphan' and both are available on Audible.
Go For It: Volunteering Adventures on Roads Less Travelled, is a travel book with a special twist. It’s written by two Canadian retirees, who instead of settling down for some calm days as I guess most pensioners would do, rather signs up for volunteer work in developing countries, specifically Bangladesh, Jamaica and Guynea.
Most of the travel books I’ve read, are written by young adventurers, and as such, this is an interesting perspective for such a book. I think a key motivation for the authors for writing this book is to show other people in the same situation that you can still travel to countries off the beaten track, even if you are above 60. I found the book to be interesting, and also for me (being less than 40) highly motivational. It shows that the adventure of life doesn’t need to slow down, even as you age. It makes me look forward to my own retirement.
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I won this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway. I found this book a little slow at first. I was amazed at the experiences which this couple went through at their ages. I admire them but I don't know if I would be able to handle things as well physically like they did. I expect they are in much better shape than I am. I think I will limit my volunteering to more local pursuits.
