Oh this was so much FUN! The Nightmare Before Christmas meets The Addams Family.
Amelia Fang is a vampire who lives in Nocturnia, a world where vampires and yetis and all sorts of spooky creatures live - and they’re terrified of unicorns and ladybirds and fairies - and with good reason too. The glitter? THE HORROR!
In the first Amelia Fang story, Amelia’s family is preparing for the Barbaric Ball and this year, the King and his son are attending. Amelia meets the prince and he’s not exactly nice, and he butts heads with Amelia and her friends. He also takes away Amelia’s pet pumpkin, and she and her friends fight to get Squashy back!
The characters are such a delight in this, Amelia is so fun to follow and I love her friendship with Florence and Grimaldi. They’ll do anything for each other and I love the depiction of this. There’s also the theme of bullying in this and standing up for your friends, so it’s a beautiful message wrapped up in a spooky tale. Not only is this spooky, but it’s wonderfully hilarious! References to diePhone and The Great Gothic Gravestone Carve-Off had me chuckling, adding to how much fun I had reading this!
The illustrations are also done by author Laura Ellen Anderson, and I love the illustrations so much. They are wonderfully Gothic yet light-hearted, perfectly capturing the essence of the story and characters. It’s brilliant to see how this bonkers, infectious world appears in Anderson’s mind because it’s brimming with that much imagination, I needed the visual aid.
A fast and fun read, would definitely recommend checking the Amelia Fang series out.
I love the illustrations and it's cool that there's something on every page. The humor is great especially the word choices the author made. I like Woo the ghost. His hints to Amelia is clever and I like that he rather hint to her than tell her what to do. The pretending on not remembering the Prince's name is hilarious.
This book follows Amelia Fang, 10, as she complains about going to yet another one of her family's Barbaric Ball to her parents, Count and Countess of Nocturnia. The reason is because the ball is for adults only, but Amelia's mom insisted that she come. This year, however, they will welcome a guest that has long been absent. In the meantime, the Prince, Tangine will tour the town's school as part his training to become King. The Prince later took something of Amelia's that force Amelia to recruit her friends to help rescue.
Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball was a fun read filled with amazing illustrations. I love the details in the drawings. The tree that looks like a unicorn is awesome! The friendship is great. A cute Halloween addition. Amelia's house with the confusion of doors is interesting. Amelia's teacher and her body functions cracks me up! I recommend this book to everyone.
I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway hosted by the publisher, Delacorte. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review. Please be assured that my opinions are honest.
This first in a new series has a very attractive cover, which is sure to appeal to fans of books, such as “Witch Wars.” It has twenty short chapters, is just over 200 pages long and is packed with black and white illustrations. As such it will appeal to confident readers, who are ready to embark on slightly longer books.
The front of the book has a double page map of Nocturnia, the City in the Kingdom of the Dark, complete with Nocturnia Palace, the Fang Mansion, Rickety Residences, Catacome Academy and various creepy looking places. Amelia lives in the Fang Mansion with her father, Count Drake the Third, her mother, Countess Frivoleeta, her pet pumpkin, Squashy, and the rest of her household.
Countess Frivoleeta is planning the annual Barbaric Ball, THE annual event in Nocturnia. Amelia finds the ball boring – she wants to study Pumpkinology and help poorly pumpkins when she grows up. However, her mother thinks that she needs to learn vampires etiquette. Count Drake had fallen out with King Vladimir, but now he announces he will come to the ball, and will bring his son, Prince Tangine. When the spoilt prices kidnaps Squashy, it is up to Amelia to rescue her beloved pet pumpkin.
This is a fun story, out just in time for Halloween. It is very funny, with wonderful illustrations and brilliantly quirky characters. You can forget all the rumours about vampires not having reflections, as Amelia’s mother just loves hers! Best of all, there is going to be another book in the series out next year, “Amelia Fang and the Unicorn Lords.”
My kid really looked forward to this at night. It's silly, in that Addams Family vein of humor where things could be scary but instead are delightful. There are some good gags about "creatures of the light" who are terrifying, like glitter and a wonderful unicorn who shows up at dawn to turn things into sunflowers.
The main plot about a spoiled prince was okay and got my kid thinking. The book doesn't quite stick the landing (everything is resolved and everyone gets along VERY fast). But it sets up an interesting sequel.
"Amelia and her friends loved reading stories about the Creatures of the Light: the gruesome glittery unicorns (Nocturnians were TERRIFIED of glitter), the evil sparkly fairies and the cute and fluffy angel-kittens of terror. It was the stuff of daymares. Everyone knew that while Nocturnians were sleeping and the sun was out, terrifying creatures from the nearby Kingdom of the Light lurked around the Petrified Forest. Nocturnians didn't dare step outside again until nightfall, if the could help it."
I have a soft spot for middle grade and children's books so when I saw Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball I was immediately intrigued. A book set in Nocturnia where everything sparkly, fluffy and cute is considered terrifying seemed like a great break from the literature I would normally read. Unfortunately, I had many issues regarding this book and how it executed certain topics.
First problem emerged when we were introduced to Amelia's parents. Parental figures were ridiculed, undermined as authority and most importantly refused to help Amelia when she was in a state of need. Her mother puts the need to please the King before her own daughter on several occasions - . Amelia's father is portrayed as a selfish male figure that doesn't care about his family in the least. Throughout the whole book he is seen solving crossword puzzles instead of helping his wife with preparations for an event that is clearly important to her or helping his daughter in a complicated situation she finds herself in. There is a particular scene where Amelia is amazed because her father puts his own teacup into the sink:
"Count Drake shuffled into the hall in his fluffy slippers. 'Aren't you helping?' asked Amelia. 'Me?' said her father, stretching up his arms and revealing his potbelly. 'I've helped loads. I took my teacup . . .' He paused and smiled. 'And put it . . .' He looked serious. 'In the sink.' Amelia was impressed. That was more than he'd ever done. Ever."
This made me quite sad since the book is meant for kids who are easily influenced by factors such the books they read and even though parents are not always "positive figures" they definitely shouldn't be antagonised in children's literature. I feel like Amelia's parents could have been written and portrayed in a much more positive way.
And now we get to the bullying part. Tangine could have been a very interesting character - he's a spoiled member of the royal family and a future king. In his opinion, his social status gives him the right to torment everyone around him, his main target being Amelia.
What I appreciate about Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball was the eventual acceptance shown towards, in this case, Creatures of Light, even though they are talked about as terrifying creatures throughout the book. Also, the illustrations are extremely cute.
All this considered I couldn't give Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball a very high rating, which makes me incredibly sad since this book had such potential.
1.5 glittery stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for kindly allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Amelia Fang likes hugs from her pet pumpkin Squashy, and playing with her friends Florence and Grimaldi. What she doesn't like is her parents annual Barbaric Ball. She's always the only kid there, and it's boring. So when Prince Tagine joins her school, and gets an invite to the ball, Amelia is excited to make a new friend. Except Tagine is really mean and spoilt. When he takes Squashy, Amelia and her friends will stop at nothing to rescue him. Even if it means staying up during the daytime, when the creatures of light roam around. With glitter.
This was so much fun, and just felt really wholesome. Amelia is a lovely character, warm hearted and caring but not perfect. She's the perfect antedote to typical children's book characters with a love for everything grubby and spooky. Her friends are also really funny too, and I loved how gung-ho Florence is and how Grimaldi is a teeny tiny grim reaper, in charge of toad deaths. It's just so well thought out and described.
The plot and pacing is very quick, as I would expect from a younger children's book. There's enough going on to keep the reader engaged but not be overwhelmed by a mass of information. It manages to stearvthe raedr through the story well, with plenty of secrets and twists along the way. I just had a smile on my face the whole way through. I'm so glad my daughter enjoys these too.
Absolutely fangtastic tale, and I can't wait to read the next one.
This was such an adorable and fun read, featuring a charming vampire named Amelia Fang.
There are plenty of references for adults to enjoy, Anderson's witty employ of language makes this a laugh-out-loud story for all ages to enjoy. I loved how the dark creatures were terrified of the light creatures and told 'ghost-stories' about them, making it such a delightful opposition. Amelia very quickly captures you heart and so too do her quirky companions; a yeti, a mini grim reaper, and a pet pumpkin (who is an absolute cutie and I want one!)
With gloriously gothic illustrations from the author herself, they perfectly compliment the playful and amusing tone to the plot. I am a huge fan of Laura Ellen Anderson and am always drawn to her work. It's a perfect inclusion of all things spooky without being scary.
The first adventure is this fang-tastic series! Perfect for readers developing their reading skills or for all readers young in body and in heart! Utterly delightful!
i wish this book existed when i was little, i would've based my entire life around it 🖤 such a fun and cute story, the illustrations are amazing. i loved it!
Set in Nocturnia, Amelia and the rest of the Fang family are preparing to host the latest Barbaric ball the only annual event in Nocturnal only this time, the king and prince are attending too.
Ahead of time Amelia has to show the prince around her school where he acts very stuffily towards them all and when he has dinner with the whole family pre barbaric ball, he acts entitled and ends up taking Amelia's Squashy, her friend!
Amelia sets off determined to retrieve Squashy away from the awful prince but can she and will she succeeded and what is wrong with the prince to make him so awful?
The book was wonderful, I hated the prince as you should and loved Amelia and her spooky friend. May I say the language and phrases in the book were genius for example a diephone and Great British Carve off for example made me laugh. The drawings were great too with a lot of detail for each character with elaborate costumes for the cast of the book. The deep issue in the book a round friends and parents worked nicely in the last half of the book when Amelia figures things out as the plot develops on and was actually a great twist as well as truthful in how we act to people as we develop relationships.
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!
I received a free copy from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review This book was fantastic and I laughed from start to finish. Great use of alliteration throughout. Loved the spoilt Prince Tangine ans the side characters. Amelia and her pet Squashy were so cute fantastic illustrations of all the characters too.
This is just delightful! Definitely a yearly Halloween re-read!
Rating:Wowwee / 5
Absolutely darling! I can't believe I loved this story as much as I did but, by the end, I was absolutely hooked and kept thinking that if I ever have kids, I HAVE to read this to them!
The story is kind of reminiscent of Hotel Transylvania, and I think the influences are definitely there--Amelia's dad Drake wearing a Hawaiian t-shirt, a short vampire prince with poofy hair, the kind of vampires who's name is Vladimir. It all adds up, is what I'm saying.
In itself though, it's completely its own story that, while definitely targeted at kids, can also be enjoyed by Halloween enthusiasts like myself. There's the more child-friendly elements that make up the plot, but then the art and just the world that Amelia lives in is so Halloween-tastic that I can easily picture myself re-reading this book whilst sipping a pumpkin spice latte. (Cheers to you, Squashy!)
Also, believe it or not, there was also a twist to the plot that I WASN'T expecting in there, and that just brought the story up a whole nother level!
All in all, yes, a huge recommend for this one and a lovely aesthetic to everything as well! Looking forward to continuing this series!
A charming read for people of all ages this Halloween.
I became aware of this book due to it being part of Waterstones recommendations this month (and I'm always taking advantage of their 'buy one get a second half price' deal), their was just something about the cover that jumped out at me.
I found the story very entertaining and has tons of funny gags , the diePhone practically appealed to me.
The book is scattered with loads of lovely illustrations too, I felt the story also offers some important life lessons to younger readers in a fun way.
I can certainly see why this title was selected for book of the month.
Amelia Fang is doing her best to be nice to the Prince of Nocturnia but when he is so mean, not only to her but her friends Florence the Yeti and Grimaldi the Reaper, she struggles to keep being the friendliest vampire around!
Amelia Fang And The Barbaric Ball is the first children's book that talented and familiar illustrator Laura Ellen Anderson has both written and illustrated and it is going to absolutely delight kids with its laugh out loud humour and description of the creatures living in Nocturnia, especially the sheer terror that glitter provokes in them. A truly wonderful story about making friends and finding out who people really are, it is full of escapades and fun that kids will enjoy reading time and time again and is aimed at the 5 to 8 years market with manageable chapters for the beginning chapter book reader to get their teeth sunk into ;) This book is such a great read that I feel that older children will also love it as well as many parents who will enjoy reading this book either aloud to, or along with, their kids.
Laura Ellen Anderson's illustrations are delightful and cute as always and have made me desperately want a pet pumpkin now!
The Monster Squad + Helena Bonham Carter + Monsters Inc. + The Worst Witch?!
I SO WISH I could give this one more than 5 stars! I adored it with my whole heart! I am so tempted to binge the other 6 books in the series right now!!
Amelia Fang wants nothing more to spend time with her best friends Florence (a rare breed of Yeti, TYVM) Grimaldi Reaperton, and Squashy! But the upcoming Barbaric Ball her parents are throwing and the return to society by King Vlad and his son, Prince Tangine, are making life difficult.
This book is great for all ages! As an adult, I adored it! I can also see parents reading this at bedtime to their kids or a book to get new readers obsessed with chapter books and MG!
The best part is Laura Ellen Anderson did all her own illustrations!! They are FANTABULOUS and add to an already perfect story!!
Buy this for yourself, or if you’re twisted, everyone you know!!
Delightful, punny and brilliantly illustrated, this is a charming and madcap Halloween adventure that will make every reader want a pet pumpkin of their own! 7+

What a cute story! I loved the illustrations and the characters, and I thought the story was well-paced for kid and adult readers alike. This story can definitely stand on its own but still leads well into the sequel. Not sure if I will continue, but I can see the appeal for young readers, for sure.
