Who killed Ryan McKay’s cousin?

In suburban Westchester County, just outside the frenetic pace of New York City, a deadly murder occurs. After a violent struggle, FBI agent Shane Walsh is dead and his wife, Caitlin, has vanished. At the urging of a mysterious text, the Walshes’ nine-year-old daughter, Kennedy, has been safely whisked away by a close family member.

The FBI is determined to bring down whoever assassinated one of its own and is focusing on Caitlin as a prime suspect. Ryan McKay, Forensic Instincts’ chief technology officer, as well as Shane’s cousin and lifelong friend, vehemently disagrees. Ryan knows the Walsh family well. He insists that Caitlin is innocent, and that she, herself, is in danger.

After convincing his team to cast a wider net, Ryan leads FI on a zigzag course across two continents to locate Caitlin, sidestepping the FBI at every turn, and protecting Kennedy at all costs. But the FBI is on the warpath, and threatens to permanently shut down Forensic Instincts if they don’t back off. Undeterred by the FBI’s threats, FI goes underground in pursuit of their rogue mission.

As the pace quickens, Kennedy becomes the target of unnerving text messages. Both The FBI and the Forensic Instincts teams sense that the end game is near and that the chess match is spiraling to a stunning conclusion. Determined to declare “checkmate” before the killer, Forensic Instincts must not only protect Kennedy but make sure that their team doesn’t end up as collateral damage when the king falls.

LIFE OR DEATH (Forensic Instincts Book #11) by Andrea Kane is another addition to this always gripping crime thriller series featuring an eclectic group of talented crime fighters who have come together to form Forensic Instincts (FI). They are not always on the technically right side of the law, but they always get their prey and solve the case. While the characters have continually evolved over the now eleven books, the individual crime plots are always solved in each book so they can be read as standalones.

Ryan McKay is the tech genius for Forensic Instincts (FI), and he is devastated when he learns his cousin and FBI agent, Shane Walsh, has been found murdered in his home and his wife, Caitlin, is missing. Ryan’s mother receives a text to pick up Shane’s eight-year-old daughter, Kennedy, from school and to keep her safe.

While FI gets to work immediately on the case, the FBI has warned them not to interfere, or they will be shut down. FI refuses to back down and goes underground with the help of another secretive off-the-record group that fights crimes internationally. In a race to prove Caitlin innocent and keep Kennedy safe, the FI group is going to need every resource and friend they have available to discover the motive and killer.

I always love returning to the Forensic Instincts world. I get a great crime thriller as well as a comfortable cast of fully developed characters. Ryan and Claire are the focal characters from FI throughout this book as well as Shane’s daughter Kennedy, but everyone appears with everyone’s skills necessary to solve this case. The crime plot is intricately plotted with plenty of twists along the way, but it also has a very clever misdirection that changes the entire focus of the case. I always enjoy getting my hands on a new FI book and following this familiar group of characters as they investigate a new crime.

I highly recommend this fast-paced crime thriller and encourage you to try the entire Forensic Instincts series!

4.5 rounded up

This is the 11th book in the author's Forensic Instincts series but can definitely read as a standalone.

Ryan McKay is the Chief Technology Officer at Forensic Instincts. When his mother receives a cryptic text to pick up her grand-niece, Kennedy, at school, he heads over to his cousin, Shane's house to find out what's going on. Ryan discovers Shane has been murdered, his wife, Caitlin, is nowhere to be found, and their daughter, Kennedy, could be in danger. Shane wasn't just his cousin but also his closest friend and an FBI Agent. The FBI is taking the lead and is looking at Caitlin as the primary suspect. But Ryan knows better; he knows Caitlin is innocent. With the help of his other teammates, he's determined to prove it. The FBI, however, wants FI to stay out of it and has even threatened to shut them down permanently. Can Ryan get to the truth and protect Kennedy?

This book was fast-paced and had tons of action that kept me on my toes. There was never a dull moment, and I was totally hooked. There was a compelling mystery, page-turning suspense, and a big twist. I loved getting to know Ryan and Claire better, as well as their particular skill sets. Ryan's family was such a great addition of characters, and I absolutely loved how important St. Patrick's Day was to them. I really enjoyed this one and would definitely recommend it🩷

Families grieve as one of their own is lost.

Life or Death is the 11th book in author Andrea Kane’s excellent Forensic Instincts series, and families, real and found, grieve when one of their own is lost. A terse text message to family matriarch, Maureen McKay, to immediately pick up her grand-niece, Kennedy Walsh, at school, with no explanation given, kicks off the suspense in this breakneck thriller. But the reason behind the terse request soon becomes apparent when the child’s father, FBI Special Agent Shane Walsh, is found murdered in their home, and her mother is missing and presumed taken. Forensic Instincts and the FBI go head-to-head to discover Shane’s killer first and bring Kennedy’s mother, Caitlin, home safely.

The shocking murder floored me, but it was the scene where the FBI team notifies young Kennedy of her father’s death that absolutely gutted me. In only a couple of chapters, the author had made me a part of the McKay and Forensic Instincts families, and I felt their sorrow. From that point on, I was so invested in the FI team finding the killer, living through their grief, and desperate for them to bring Caitlin home to her little girl.

It was all hands on deck for both FI and the FBI; both determined to get the person responsible, but do it within the proper parameters of the law to ensure their actions didn’t stand in the way of justice. The overlap between the two teams, FIs founder Casey Woods-Hutchinson, is newly wed to the FBIs Supervising Special Agent Kyle “Hutch” Hutchinson, who is directing their investigation, necessitated some tricky maneuvering on FI’s part to do what they do best and still maintain their relationship.

This story puts FI’s Ryan McKay and his girlfriend, claircognizant Claire Hedgleigh, in the spotlight; Shane was Ryan’s cousin. Mom Maureen is the glue that keeps the McKay clan together. I was especially drawn into the scenes that featured the daughter as the desperate hunt for her mother continued. There is plenty of clever misdirection, surprising twists and turns, and some covert outside assistance enters the picture to keep the suspense high and the pages turning. While this is the 11th book in the series, it can easily be read and enjoyed as a standalone. However, the previous books are great and not to be missed!

I recommend LIFE OR DEATH to readers of thrillers and mysteries, and especially to fans of the series.

Full transparency: thrillers are not my usual shelf. I am most at home in horror, splatterpunk, literary fiction, and narrative nonfiction. But Life or Death landed in my hands and proceeded to erase an entire afternoon, so here we are.

This is the eleventh book in Andrea Kane's Forensic Instincts series, and I came in completely cold with zero prior knowledge of the characters or previous cases. It did not matter at all. Kane writes this as a true standalone, and new readers will feel completely oriented from the start. That alone earns serious points from me because midstream series entries can feel like arriving late to a party where everyone knows each other and you are just smiling and nodding.

The setup is immediate and brutal. FBI agent Shane Walsh is murdered in his Westchester home. His wife Caitlin has vanished. Their nine-year-old daughter Kennedy has been whisked away by a family member acting on a mysterious text. The FBI zeroes in on Caitlin as the prime suspect. Ryan McKay, Shane's cousin and the Forensic Instincts team's tech lead, refuses to accept that conclusion and convinces his team to go underground to find the truth, even as the bureau threatens to shut them down permanently.

What kept me turning pages was not just the plot, which moves fast and spans two continents, but the characters. Ryan's grief is raw and real. Casey, the team leader, is operating while recovering from a previous injury. Kennedy is surrounded by a fiercely protective circle that gives the story genuine emotional warmth. Kane never lets the thriller momentum flatten the human moments, and that balance is harder to pull off than it looks.

The pacing is relentless in the best way. The final act delivers fully. If you enjoy a fast, emotionally grounded thriller with a strong ensemble cast and a satisfying resolution, this one is well worth your time.

Life or Death by Andrea Kane is A Forensic Instincts Novel by the author involving The Forensic Instincts Team. On the team are several members including one of our MC's named Ryan who is looking into the death of his cousin named Shane, an FBI agent. Shane was murdered in his home and his wife Caitlin is missing, and there is a mysterious text from the deceased Shane telling his great Aunt to pick up his daughter Kennedy at her school and do not let her go home. The story is very engaging as once you start the book you can not help but be pulled into the world of Ryan and the FI team, as they are trying to solve Shane's murder and track down what happened to Caitlin his wife. I really liked the characters in this book, they were real and relatable to the readers, I especially liked Maureen who took care of her kids and even her extended family, like Kennedy, she was an awesome Mama Bear.

This was my first book by this author and in this series. Even though it was my first book of the series, I had no issues following along. The author does an amazing job giving details and background of all the characters involved.

As a crime junkie fan, I really enjoyed this book. Its complexity was enough, but not so much where I couldn’t understand and follow along. There are several characters involved and you need to pay attention to the story to stay on track, but it’s sucks a good story it was easy to do. It brings together a diverse ground of people from Forensic Instincts and the FBI as they help to solve a murder and find the missing wife.

I also loved the family dynamic involved. Each person had their own role to play and they are working diligently to solve a crime and reconnect a daughter and mother. There are lots of twists and turns to keep you in your toes as you learn who did what and why.

I have liked this series. Kane has created and interesting mix of people in the Forensic Instincts group, including a woman who has deep insight and can detect truths from items belonging to a victim. Having read all of the books in the series, I know the group well and appreciate each one's unique abilities. If this is your first read in this series, don't worry as Kane has given a good introduction to the team members at the beginning of this book. The relationships between the team members is important and Kane spends a good amount of time on that. Here, for example, FI owner Casey and her FBI agent husband get into quite a disagreement when FI makes serious advances on a case when the FBI is stymied. I appreciated the detailed explanation of how the FBI would inform and support a girl whose father was murdered and mother is missing.

This is a good series for readers who like investigative type mysteries that include much information about the people involved. The personal lives of FI members play an important part of this ongoing series, making it more interesting than just a pure investigation novel. I recommend it.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

MY THOUGHTS -
Andrea Kane is just so dang clever! I’ve been a fan of hers for quite a while now, but I swear every time I read a new one, I’m blown away all over again! OMG—I absolutely loved this one! I know I say this literally every single time, but seriously… this one really might be my favorite!

There are a lot of characters to keep track of, I’ll admit that. But my only suggestion to you is… just read all the books! LOL. Trust me—you won’t regret it! The more you read, the more you get to know everyone and start to feel like part of their family. This one really highlights Ryan and Claire, and I was here for it. I love both of these characters, but I especially love Claire who is Claire-voyant 😆. I also love that these books have just a touch of paranormal elements. And then there's Kennedy, a sweet nine year old who almost steals the show! She did steal my heart.

Job well done, Andrea! I can’t wait for the next book—I’m a fan forever.

I generally enjoy the Forensic Instinct books. They're clever and quick and engaging. This book completely deviates from that. The first 14 chapters waxed on and on about how Ryan's poor niece, Kennedy, was sad or scared or upset. The rest of the book was peppered with the same while barely offering any info on how the case was actually solved. The first 10 FI books were fun; this book, pointless read.

As you may or may not know, Forensic Instincts is an organization that delves into criminal investigations. To regroup, the characters are Casey and Hutch (Casey is the owner of FI, and Hutch is FBI), Ryan, Patrick, Claire, Marc, Emma, and Yoda. And the newest member of FI, Angela, who provides legal counsel as FI skirts the law in some instances. To reiterate, each of these folks have different talents that they use throughout their investigations. Yoda is FI’s version of AI. This is book 11 in this series.
In this particular case, FI is investigating the death of a relative of one of their own, Ryan – his cousin Shane and Shane’s family are the center of their investigation which includes their daughter, Kennedy, who is a very bright, inquisitive little girl.
What I particularly enjoy about this series, though I have only read two, are the dynamics between the team players. What I find even more intriguing is the relationship between Casey and Hutch, being a married couple who find themselves investigating the exact same crime yet being able to maintain their marriage. It puts me in mind of the show The Closer, with the same sort of dynamics with a married couple in different law enforcement agencies. I can only imagine what a relationship like that would entail, how a couple can separate their professions from their marriage.
I also enjoy the fact that Ryan and Claire, as a couple, balance each other out, both providing strength to each other when needed.
Another thing I enjoy about this series is the fact that the author puts the ‘crime’ out front and then the reader is taken through the ins and outs of the investigation – the good, the bad, the ugly, but that final twist in the end when things were wrapping up? Didn’t expect that.

This story caught my attention from the very first page. Maureen was getting prepared for Sunday dinner with all her children when she received a text from an unknown number that she found out was her nephew Shane asking her to go pick up her niece Kennedy at school. Kennedy was the only child of FBI agent Shane Walsh and his wife Caitlin; this was not normal behavior for this couple, so Maureen called her son Ryan McKay, Forensic Instincts’ chief technology officer, to go over to their home to find out what was going on. Upon going over to the Walsh residence, he found FBI agent Shane Walsh in a pool of blood and his wife Caitlin missing from the home, though both their vehicles were parked outside the home. Their daughter Kennedy, thankfully, was at school at the time of her fathers murder. The poor little girl in the book—it had to be devastating to lose your daddy and not know where your mommy was. Glad she had the unconditional love of her family to help her deal with it. This book had me hooked as it goes down the seemingly never-ending mystery of who murdered Shane and whether Catlyn was still alive. Get yourself a copy below its good!! Received this as an ARC reader and am leaving my unbiased review.

Life or Death by Andrea Kane is a fantastic cat and mouse game as things heat between two government agencies trying to find the killer. One of them suspects the wife who has vanished and the other thinks there is a different killer out there. Threats from all sides escalate as things heat up in this intense action-packed thriller. There are high stakes, overseas operations, grief, loss, government agency politics, and an electrifying emotional atmosphere on every page. Andrea Kane's characters, plot, and mysterious edge gives this book so much life. It was fun thrill ride for answers. I love reading about FBI agents and Life or Death gave it to me. I have read other books written by this talented writer and this specific novel is just as superb as her previous works. I have not read the previous books in this series but other books of her and loved her writing. I recommend this novel to all who love a good mystery, crime fiction, and federal agents in action.

I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

Life or Death is the 11th book in the Forensic Investigations series. I've always been a big fan of this series because the characters are just so interesting. It always feels like visiting old friends when I pick up the latest book. While it could be read as a stand alone, I feel like at this point in the series, there is so much back story that you miss with the characters. You will really be shorting yourself if you don't read from the start.

The entire team have all come so far since book one. It's been amazing to watch. This one takes place a few months after the end of the last book, Struck Dead. In this book, the team is drawn into an investigation involving members of Ryan's family. The mystery was solid. I always enjoy watching this team work together to put the pieces together. Ryan and Claire really shine this time. I won't spoil anything especially the very sweet ending. I'll just encourage you to read the book as well as the series.

Another Forensic Instincts book. I like this series. The bones of the story are good, although too much time spent discussing plans and strategy for my liking as usual. I think the description of the book dramatized certain plot elements more than they seemed in actuality.

Ryan's cousin Shane is found murdered and his wife Caitlin missing, with a mysterious text to pick to Maureen, Ryan's mom - to pick up their daughter Kennedy from school.

Of course, the FI team takes the case even though Casey's husband Hutch warns them not to get in the FBI's way. They consider Caitlin a person of interest, not a suspect. There was a lot of suspense, not necessarily from action, although the plot moved forward well, but from all the descriptions of Zoom meetings and everyone's tasks. I would like to see more of the newest team member Angela and also Emma in future books. And a happy ending w a bow🎀 and a 💍. I didn't like how harsh Hutch was with Casey.

Life or Death by Andrea Kane is the 11th book in her Forensic Instinct Series. Even though this book is way into the series, it can be easily read as a stand alone. This is a well written crime thriller that will grab you from the start. The characters are very real and well developed. Filled with mystery and intrigue, Ms. Kane will take you on a rollercoaster ride you will not want to get off of! I will definitely go back and read the rest of the series, after reading this one I am sure it will be well worth it.

Thank you Partners In Crime Book Tours and Andrea Kane for allowing me to be part of this book tour. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

A big thank you to @partnersincrimevbt for the gifted copy of Life or Death! This was a fast paced FBI thriller that follows Forensic Institute’s (FI) Ryan McKay (and his family) as they race around the world to save his murdered cousin’s wife and keep their daughter safe.

This is book eleven the series and while I haven’t read the others, I was still able to follow along. There are A LOT of characters though, and it’s fast paced so I did have to go back to read things over to remind myself who was who.

I don’t typically read crime thrillers like this but I enjoyed this one! If you like shows like Criminal Minds or Bones, you’ll like this.

Worst of the series,I have thoroughly enjoyed all the others. Literally nothing happens until halfway through the book, just people worrying about Kennedy and Kennedy whining. Finally somebody throws a Molotov cocktail and things start happening but really only the last 25% of the book was enjoyable. Also I'm still waiting to find out the power source on the locket with video and audio that streamed all day and didn't have a battery or need charging

This one hit a little to close to home for the team. I really liked how everyone immediately stepped up to help Ryan and his family figure out what was going on. Even to the point where it seemed like there might be a big problem between Casey and Hutch for how FI was investigating things. It was nice to see how things resolved and for those involved to get back to their new normal.

A very interesting case that puts FI at odds with the FBI more than usual. As always, the relationships stand out as a strong part of the book. The tech in the book is also fascinating. FI always solves the crime and they did so in bold fashion. I would recommend this book. In my opinion, it would be best enjoyed if you read the prior books first.
