محمدعلی همایون کاتوزیان که در ایران با نام همایون کاتوزیان و در خارج از ایران با کوته‌نوشت نام هما کاتوزیان نیز شناخته می‌شود، اقتصاددان، تاریخ‌نگار، پژوهشگر علوم سیاسی و منتقد ادبی ایرانی است. زمینهٔ تحقیق مورد علاقهٔ او مسائل مربوط به ایران معاصر است. تحصیلات رسمی دانشگاهی کاتوزیان در اقتصاد و جامعه‌شناسی است. او به‌طور همزمان مطالعاتش را در زمینهٔ تاریخ و ادبیات ایران تا سطح پیشرفتهٔ آکادمیک ادامه داده است و تا سال ۲۰۱۱، بیش از هفت کتاب از او در زمینهٔ تاریخ و ادبیات ایران به زبان انگلیسی به چاپ رسیده است.
همایون کاتوزیان در تهران به دنیا آمد و پس از فراغت از تحصیل در دبیرستان البرز و گذراندن یک سال در دانشگاه تهران، برای خواندن رشتهٔ اقتصاد به انگلستان رفت. او در سال ۱۹۶۷ لیسانس خود را از دانشگاه بیرمنگام دریافت کرد. در سال ۱۹۶۸ فوق لیسانس را از دانشگاه لندن و در سال ۱۹۸۴ دکترایش را از دانشگاه کنت در کانتربری گرفت. در سال‌های بین ۱۹۶۸ تا ۱۹۸۶ در انگلستان، ایران، کانادا و ایالات متحده به تدریس اقتصاد پرداخت. او در حال حاضر پژوهشگر پسا‌دکترا در کالج سنت آنتونی، و عضو هیئت علمی مؤسسه شرق‌شناسی دانشگاه آکسفورد است. کاتوزیان یک پسر و یک دختر دارد که هر دو در شهر آکسفورد زندگی می‌کنند.

Homa Katouzians Iran and the Revolution bietet eine umfassende Geschichte des revolutionären Iran von den 1940er Jahren bis in die Gegenwart. Der Autor macht deutlich, dass die Revolution von 1979 nicht allein als islamische Bewegung zu verstehen ist, sondern als breiter Aufstand verschiedener gesellschaftlicher Kräfte gegen die Pahlavi-Dynastie.
Besonderes Gewicht legt das Buch auf die Öl-Nationalisierung sowie den Sturz von Mossadegh im Jahr 1953 als entscheidende Wendepunkte der modernen iranischen Geschichte. Im Kapitel 2: Chaos in den 1940ern und die Nationalisierung des iranischen Öls: 1941–53 werden die strukturellen Ursachen der Instabilität analysiert, während Kapitel 6: Die Volksrevolution: 1978–79 den dramatischen Moment des Umbruchs nachzeichnet.
Katouzian gelingt so eine dichte und differenzierte Darstellung eines epochalen Ereignisses, dessen politische und gesellschaftliche Nachwirkungen den Iran und die Welt bis heute prägen.
Katouzian macht unmissverständlich deutlich, dass das tiefe Misstrauen zwischen Teheran und Washington keine religiöse Laune ist, sondern im Trauma von 1953 wurzelt: Die gewaltsame Unterbindung iranischer Souveränität legte den Grundstein für die spätere antiamerikanische Ausrichtung der Revolution. Wer die heutigen Spannungen im Nahen Osten verstehen will, muss erkennen, dass für den Iran jeder aktuelle Konflikt mit den USA als weiteres Kapitel eines langen Ringens gegen die befürchtete Rückkehr in eine Ära der Abhängigkeit gelesen wird.
Ein kurzer Impuls dazu:
Es ist die Tragik einer Geopolitik mit verkürztem Gedächtnis: Während der Westen häufig auf das Atomprogramm oder regionale Stellvertreterkonflikte fokussiert, zeigt Katouzian, dass im iranischen Selbstverständnis die offene Rechnung von 1953 fortbesteht. Aus dieser Perspektive erscheint der gegenwärtige Konflikt weniger als Streit um die Gegenwart denn als fortgesetzte Abwehr jener Kräfte, die einst eine demokratisch gewählte Hoffnung im Namen geopolitischer Interessen und des Zugriffs auf Öl zunichtemachten.

I think the idea of short term society and the nature of all Iranian rulers are being arbitrary despotism make sense but I was surprised to read the views of such a esteemed author about relationship between the US and Iran. If US hadn’t tear JCOPA, things would have been different! We all know the nature of IR based on creating enemies and the greatest enemy of them all is the US.
Also author questions why the public didn’t rise up against the state when Israel attacked Iran and he asks is it because Iranian society turning into long term society like Europe.
I think when your very existence is in danger last thing you will do is uprising against your government.

I found this book decidedly subjective. It repeatedly fails to question Iranian motives or actions. I’d say read this book if you already presume irans unfailing motives and integrity. I don’t think facts bear out his version of Iran’s acts. The US definitely not blameless but Iran is frequently its own worst enemy. And, objectively, with a gdp per capita lowest in the Middle East and painful persistent inflation I just think you have to ask. Isn’t there another path forward?
