A summer heat wave blankets the New Hampshire seacoast. In an attempt to beat the heat, Jack’s best friend, Dave, arranges for a day of fishing far off shore on the boat Miss Cookie. Even though they land only a few fish, they pronounce the day a great success—until Jack spots smoke on the horizon and they convince the reluctant captain to bring them to investigate. What they find will have a profound effect upon all of their lives as they deal with the consequences of an Unexpected Catch.
A wilderness thriller set in my own backyard! My introduction to this genre was CJ Box murder mysteries set Wyoming. I next discovered Paul Dorin novels centered in the great state of Maine. This novel hits closest to home as I regularly fish Jeffries Ledge from both Rye and Hampton Harbors. The prose and story lines aren’t quite as tight as Box or Dorin, but this novel is still quite entertaining. Who knows what I’ll catch next time at Jeffries!
I look forward to visiting with Max and Jack and friends and have bought The next story, Black Schooner. The settings in Hampton, Rye, Portsmouth, the NH coast basically, so add to the appeal of K. D. Mason's books.
