In the vast Star Trek Universe, many diverse alien races abound, and now they finally get their due! In this issue, the spotlight shines on the Gorn. After their shuttle craft crash-lands on an uncharted planet, Captain Terrell and Commander Checkov calculate that their odds of survival are somewhat decreased when they find themselves facing off against an army of Gorn warriors.
I'm always struck by how dumb (most of) the Star Trek comics are. And it's all the more surprising that when I was younger I was always under the impression that Star Trek was more mature, intelligent, and realistic than Star Wars. Not only do the TV series feature a hella more fantasy than I expected, in many wars it is actually more akin to Star Wars in regards to breaking the rules of physics and mystical mumbo-jumbo.
Anyways, without the slightest doubt I knew this comic was going to suck. And lo and behold: it did!
I'm convinced that the author has an IQ in the single digits. No joke. An episode of Sesame Street would be far more interesting and thought-provoking than this illustrated fecal matter.
This story didn't turn out as I expected. It seemed like it would be somewhat of a horror story where Gorn would pick off this crew one by one. When the leader suggests they render aid so they don't look inferior, I expected that they wanted to heal the Starfleet crew so they wouldn't be able to use being wounded as an excuse for why they fell to the Gorn. I figured they wanted an even match, and after they rendered aid, they'd wipe the Starfleet crew out.
I enjoyed seeing some of the Reliant crew, and seeing some of the Gorn vehicles as well. The art was pretty good and the pace of the story was enough to keep me involved without getting distracted.
It starts on a federation shuttle craft -- my instant thoughts were, 'oh no, no good things happen on a shuttlecraft/ runabout.' However, this was an excellent comic. Everything in the visual canon suggests that the Gorn are merciless, and seeing this side significantly changed that perspective. In addition, it was a great plot.
As a Star Wars fan, I couldn't help but notice the significant correlation between the Gorn and Trandosians. It was fun, and I heard Bosk as I read the Gorn bubbles.
Looks like the Gorn will return in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds", eventually (about a decade before Kirk encountered them). Cannot wait! Also, this graphic novel gets five *****'s!!!!!!!!!!!
