— decide dar-me uma oportunidade.
Parece desesperado!
Was easily a 5 star read until about 60% and then several of my biggest pet peeves in a H happened, the "I regret we had sex" trope and then the "I'm breaking up with you for your own good" trope a bit later on followed by "my brother has to talk me into pursuing and groveling to the h because I'm too chicken to do it" ...basically he's a big old coward which was a huge shift in character from the first 60% and for me a huge turn off.
This book also lacked the explosive, smoking hot sex that we were spoilt with in previous books.
I love a grumpy asshole H and in the beginning Killian was massively delivering on that, I was absolutely loving him and this book plus there was so much sexual tension but then when "I regret we had sex" happened it just fizzled and Killian never really won me back.
First 60% I couldn't put it down, everything about it was perfect
Last 40% and the pacing was so off, every other chapter there was a "1/2/3 weeks later" added and relationship development was glossed over and the pacing was off. I didn't really feel like I properly understood their relationship besides being horny for each other and yes I'll say it again, the sex was really really lackluster compared to this author's earlier works.

Clodagh is in desperate need of a job and a way to stay in the US after her tourist visa is almost up and her original plan to be an au pair fell through. Luck would have it she gets hired to become the live-in assistant/nanny to a rich powerful businessman.
Killian is a single father of a 12-year-old daughter and is the CEO known for being ruthless with his business ventures and not the warmest person to be around.
We get to see Clodagh struggle to keep her attraction from Killian in check every day but mostly we get to see Killian lose his mind over her at every glance. He is falling deeper into his obsession to get her and after weeks of pushing away and pretending the chemistry does not exist it finally happens BUT of course we get the usual regret from the guy, and he tells her in many ways that it was a mistake, and he regrets doing anything and they should forget as well as move on from them having sex.
I loved their banter and I loved how she got under his skin, and honestly she was not doing it on purpose at all which made some of the moments funnier and endearing. So when he cannot lie to himself anymore and finally lets them be together it’s great.
We get some OW drama as well as some OM drama.
OW drama: There is a woman Killian was initially trying to ''date'' and had gone out to eat a few times, but nothing ever transpired with her, but she is seen with Killian the first time Clodagh runs into her (before she started her job, and he knew she was the nanny). The next instance is the fact he sent her flowers (out of spite to Clodagh wanting to date others etc.) and the last one when she was invited to a big business dinner and Clodagh believed he would be sleeping with hereafter, but he actually tells her that he only wants to be friends and never wanted her nor did anything with her.
OM drama: Clodagh had an ONS with a guy she knew when she first came to NY, this is not shown on page but is mentioned. She is NOT interested in him at all and regrets that night, but he seems to not get it and comes around a few times to get her attention and this creates jealousy with Killian.
There was also the mystery of how his mother’s daughter died, at first I thought they were married but we find out they were just engaged and then later on we get the full story that they actually were broken up when his ex is murdered at her home during a robbery but we finally find out that she was seeing someone new.
We do get Killian spending a few times around her grave to talk to her and seek comfort (and those scenes really hit home) but it's not because he still is in love or missing her emotionally, but he feels guilt for her death and the fact she was never around to see their daughter grow up.
After her death he is paranoid and has security all the time to make sure it never happens again. Which leads to the third act breakup (and you knew it was coming), Clodagh finds herself in a somewhat dangerous situation with a disgruntled guy we met earlier that Killian had issues with and this causes Killian to make the drastic decision to break up with her in a very COLD way. Clodagh feeling distraught leaves NY and goes back home and plans to move to London.
Thankfully, Killian gets his head out of his ass weeks after and goes after her.
The reason this book gets 3.5 stars is because of the ending. I was happy with everything until Clodagh made Killian wait YEARS to not only move in together but get married. It felt like it diminished the progress they had made and the love? I wanted the obsession and desperation to continue so when she made him wait for all of that it slowed down that progress for me.
I love a slightly unbelievable romance as much as the next gal, but come onnnnnn. He hated her for like 70% of the book and then he’s traveling out OF THE COUNTRY to get her back??? They had no spark? No connection? And WHY was she “clenching her ass” so much???
Entertaining and hot-ish as well as disappointing.
I jumped into reading this as soon as i found it because I am a huge fan of nanny x boss books as well as grumpy ml.
But usually, at least in books written by women, if we get a grumpy sunshine dynamic we get a grumpy character that is secretly not a jerk, but this book failed to prove that the ml was not a jerk and even worse, a coward.
Yes, i know.
Ew🤢
i mean it was going really strong up until 50%, like the ml was a “cold” asshole from the start but after that it just got to a point I couldn’t stand it (even though in contrast with plenty other jerk ml or even jerk ml in workplace romances this man is a saint)
Overall what made this book enjoyable and saved it in a way was the tension and the characters like Sam, the security guard??, Teagan, the daughter, and the Clodagh, the FL
I liked the FL, i love Irish culture and her being from there was just such a vibe, i could literally hear the accent coming out of the book.
I have to say, it irked me that she was so easily persuaded by the ml after he treated her badly or after he said awful things but apart from that I enjoyed reading her story, POV and everything.
The spice was good, not 10/10 but a good 7/10? Ive heard this author in particular has a nick for devils tango scenes (iykyk) so i might be checking those out later ( if you know me irl, no you don’t)
Also if you want to read this for some good grovelling, then i have terrible newss…
Holy billionaire this book was *chefs kiss* so good!!!
I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard while reading a book, the FMC had me literally lmao throughout every chapter!
I’m pretty sure Killian receives the gold medal for the grumpiest MMC I’ve read this year. This man did not crack a smile until I was over half way through the book and I’m pretty sure at that point he barely gave out a smirk.
I’m a huge fan of the Nanny/Boss trope and Rosa did an amazing job with this book! I instantly loved Clodagh from the second I read her making jokes about a man suckling a tit 😭 she has this goofy side but with so much sass! She’s everything that Killian isn’t and that made such a fun couple to read about. I loved the tension and the way she wasn’t afraid to talk back to him.
Also fair warning the tub/shower scene will give you all the feels😂🥵
If you love…
-Single Dad -Nanny/Boss -Grumpy/ Sunshine -Forced Proximity -Opposite Attract -Age Gap
Typical Nanny on a work visa gets a job with a rich man blah blah blah. It’s literally a copy and paste of ‘Mr Masters by TL Swan’ which came out in May 2018, only Irish and terrible? 👀🤦🏻♀️
While I’m here, I would like to note the most irritating scene in the book that made me roll my eyes so hard I swear I seen Jesus was at this moment right here….
“He groans low and deep. His face strains, his jaw grinds, and a muscle in his forehead jumps as he tries to hold out, waiting for me to orgasm. But he can’t.”💀😑 THENNNN she proceeds to tell her bestie about it quoting “It wasn’t just good. It was the best sex of my life” 🥴
Good grief babe if you’re idea of a good first sex scene between the MMC and FMC as “a quickie up against the wall and she DOES NOT FINISH, being the best sex of her life” then YOU clearly don’t get laid enough in real life 😮💨
I did however love it when she was eating balls of fancy cheese at rich people restaurant only to be asked why she was eating balls of butter…. DEADDD😂😂
This was shaping up to be a great read but it didn’t quite hit the mark. The last half the pacing was off, the 3rd act breakup reasonings were a bit pathetic. Also I felt the spicy scenes were missing some important details.
POV: Dual, 1st person. SERIES or STANDALONE: Standalone. TROPES: M/F adult, age gap, grumpy/sunshine, nanny/boss, single dad, billionaire romance. SIZE: 355 (last page) Kindle pages. CHARACTERS: Killian (36) & Clodagh (25).
Oh my did I devour this bit of smutnip. You really need to be into age gap, power imbalance, employer/employee romance, but if that's your jam, you'll spread this on toast and dig right in.
The jealousy, the UST that explodes into sex, that was great. But I liked the build to the relationship and that when the sex happens, the FMC isn't just an O-machine and the MMC's peen isn't the magical cure. You'd think it wouldn't be as sexy as it is but it absolutely is. I mean, I still want to slap the MMC upside the head because he was acting like a Katy Perry song with his emotional yo-yo-ing but I'm going to check out this author's other series, because this absolutely worked for me.
Rosa Lucas has a knack for writing books that I can’t stop reading. Her writing is funny and engaging; it is clunky at times but I find it so readable. Her books are an entertaining combination of humour and angst, and I think she handles this quite well in this one. Clodagh is a really fun heroine; bold when she needed to be but also vulnerable and funny.
Killian was harder to like, but I warmed to him. He definitely needed to tone down some of his behaviour but I did like his protectiveness. The author has a way of writing men that are so infuriating that I feel like physically fighting them on behalf of their love interest – whilst still making me like them by the end? It’s a talent.
The chemistry between them is good and the sex scenes are well-written and hot, but my favourite thing were the angsty bits. There were parts of this that made my stomach knot and I just kept on turning the page to find out what would happen. Her vulnerabilities came to the fore in a way that was really enjoyable to read alongside his protectiveness. I also liked how she developed a relationship with Teagan; there were some really sweet parts and I liked how Clodagh took her cues from Teagan and asked her how she felt about it all.
I did have some issues; the ending didn’t quite have the oomph I wanted, the angst started out well but the drama sort of fizzled out and the grovel wasn’t very satisfactory to me. Also – there was a major issue with Killian’s character in how he ran his business, but his realisations about that came far too late and felt very rushed. It felt very unearned when he finally began making changes to how he worked.
But on the whole it was an entertaining romance novel and Rosa Lucas covered its tropes well. I had a lot of fun reading it and I hope to see more in this series.
Content Notes: Hate-to-love, opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine, nanny, boss/employee, forced proximity, single parent, age gap.
I’m serious, Clodagh,” Killian says in a low voice ...You belong to me.” The intensity of his words hangs in the air
I’m in love with you, Clodagh. I’m so in love with you.”
My life feels so empty without you. I feel empty. I’m asking you to give me a chance
Absolutely loved this book. It made it to my "favorites" list. I usually love the nanny trope, add grumpy and sunshine, and it was a winner. I fell for Kilian and Cladagh's love story.
Just discovered Rosa Lucas, and I truly enjoyed her storytelling in all her books so far.
Like Lucas' other female characters, Cloda is young, real, very earthy, and very down to earth, reminiscent of Bridget Jones. In New York City from Donegal, Ireland, she's staying with her friend Orla in Queens and working in an Irish bar. She had a job prospect that would have given her a working visa but it fell through, and now she has to go back to Ireland. That's the setup for her meeting a suit at the bar, who sees her and, being desperate to get a temporary nanny / domestic assistant for his boss, Killian Quinn, until the full-time one returns from leave, gives her a chance and tells her to show up at Killian Quinn's office.
Cloda is elated for this opportunity but a little worried because she has an arrest record. Anyway, she scrapes through the background check, relieved that her past record hasn't shown up. She and her friend Orla celebrate with many drinks at a fancy hotel. They're really tying it on and she's stolen the drink glass as a souvenir and soaps and toiletries from the bathroom, as one does in fancy hotels. She stops to look at some really sexy lingerie in one of the store windows in the hotel, hears someone come behind her she thinks is Orla, and asks what she thinks. She turns around, bumps into Killian Quinn, a widower with a teenage daughter who's out with a date at one of the hotels he owns. She drops her bag, breaks that glass, and the toiletries roll out.
At the interview, of course he recognizes her as the toiletry thief and does not have a very good impression of her. But he takes her on probation. The salary and the perks are excellent, and Cloda loves her in-house apartment. But she has just one night to familiarize herself with the job and a huge binder of instructions from the housekeeper. This is a bit of a problem because Cloda is dyslexic but she has ways to accommodate it. It just takes her longer.
Killian is suspicious but he's also curious about her. His work laptop is hooked up to his house security. He opens it to check on her and sees her in his bedroom opening his night table, one of the "forbidden" zones. He's indignant he speaks to her, like God, his voice coming from the speakers. He's definitely attracted to her because she's very pretty and very sexy, but not in a conventional way. But he doesn't like it. His brother, Connors sees this and is very amused.
When Killian gets home he almost fires her for that infraction, but gives her a second chance. Cloda does whatever she has to do in a very logical manner to do her job, even though Killian gives her some challenges. Soon she makes friends with Sam, one of his security people who live next door.
Killian's wife was murdered and he thinks it's his fault. So he's in no way looking for anything more than a transitory relationship or someone on his arm to date for social reasons. He really resents his growing attraction to Cloda. After they sleep together he backs away, which makes her feel pretty bad and rather used. But Killian can't help coming back and being curious about her life. And he sees how good she is with his daughter. But he's afraid to do anything to get close to someone. So they have a rocky road forward with starts and stops, mainly because of him. But it's fun reading how they finally get together.
The insta attraction seems inevitable, not it's not insta love or insta sex. And it's really nice to see how they change each other and how Cloda's presence makes his daughter's life better. Along the way, there are some funny scenes, with a hookup who is obsessed with her and shows up at her home, a yoga class that Killian and his daughter attend, and a bathroom scene.
What works with these two people from different social strata is that their backgrounds are more alike than not. Killian, a first generation American, grew up in Queens and lived there with his wife and daughter until he started amassing his wealth. His Uber wealthy lifestyle was built on top of that.
I love these romances and I only wish there were more. There are two male characters, Killian's brother and his business partner, that I hope will have their own books.
