Romantic intrigue at a New Orleans parade goes awry when a harmless kiss turns deadly.
The Right Place at the Right Time: Brandy Alexander is watching a Mardi Gras parade with everyone from her Irish Channel neighborhood where a relative or lifelong friend lives in every house on the block. Everything changes in one dramatic moment when she kisses a handsome stranger in a marching group. He whispers in her ear and asks her to meet him at the end of the parade. The kiss makes her realize she is in an unfulfilling relationship that seems to be going nowhere fast. She sees her life stuck in PARK waiting for a proposal, working at the phone company, and in conflict with her mother every time she brings home another rescued dog.
The Wrong Place at the Wrong Time: Brandy’s decision to meet him puts her in the midst of a shooting. When he asks for her help, Brandy finds herself on an adventure to a Bourbon Street strip joint, Charity Hospital, a gay nightclub and reunites with a childhood pal she knew as Duck Man. She meets some quirky characters not out of the ordinary in a city that knows how to party.
There’s no place like New Orleans to have a good crime.
I was born, raised, and still live in New Orleans. I started going to parades and watched them from sitting on my Dad's shoulders before I could walk. I've been in Girl Scout parades, high school parades, St. Patrick's parades, Mardi Gras parades, on dance teams in parades and just about any loosely organized group who deemed it necessary to parade. I just can't help myself. I love parades. I attended Loyola of the South here in New Orleans so I wouldn't be far from a parade.
I spent 20+ years working for and retired from AT&T. I have worked and lived in New York City, Madison, New Jersey, Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama returning home for the big parade every year--Mardi Gras.
Before Katrina, I moved away and back three times, four if you count rebuilding the same house at the same address after Katrina flooded my home. I did miss a couple of parades that year.
I'm an avid sailor and Scuba diver for many years, and made lasting friendships from sailing and dive trips. I love travel and if the opportunity presents itself, I'm there. Except for a brief stint where I had to own and learn how to ride a motorcycle, I've been a water baby. When I am not enjoying fun with friends in all New Orleans has to offer- sailing and racing with friends on Lake Pontchartrain, Mardi Gras, parties and festivals- I head to Florida.
I am an ardent animal lover and direct an all volunteer rescue group, Schnauzer Rescue of Louisiana. I love to write and I write about what I know and love! You can take the girl out of New Orleans, but it won’t be for long!
Dead & Breakfast, the second book in my series THE NEW ORLEANS GO CUP CHRONICLES placed in two categories in the 2014 SOLA Chapter of RWA's Dixie Kane contest for Short/Long Series for Contemporary fiction and for Single Title Contemporary fiction. My first book is RESCUED BY A KISS.
The third book in the series, Drive-Thru Murder is scheduled to be released in the fall 2016.
There's no place like New Orleans to have a good crime!
Interesting plot taking place in New Orleans, LA, during Mardi Gras. It's a lighthearted, fast read with the heroine getting into some outrageous situations...but, it IS Mardi Gras! The protagonist rescues animals, particularly Schnauzers, and finds herself assisting a handsome stranger who kisses her in a parade then gets shot! She cares for his schnauzer, Isabella, while he's in the hospital. I enjoyed the somewhat zany cast of characters; the setting; and the somewhat silly plot. I plan to read the rest of the books in this series. Fans of the Stephanie Plum series may enjoy this story.
Second book finished for Ireland's Crime Book Month.
I can kind of see the appeal of a light read like this - wacky characters, a setting as fantastic as New Orleans, high stakes that never feel too overly dire, but it's just... the logic is so incredibly bad. There are so many points when if the protagonist had just communicated a bit better, or gone home and slept, or screamed for help because let's be honest, pretty white 20somethings who scream for help generally get help... but she doesn't. Even for a goofy, chick lit read, this just wandered too off the rails for me.
But, if this is your thing: over the top characters, convoluted plots, small town-big city drama, people getting far too emotional about animal rescue, 21st century parents that think their mid-twenties daughter needs to live at home until she's married, a little off kilter queer rep (why is everyone so desperately closeted? This came out in 2014 for gawd's sake!) multiple mildly unnecessary costume changes, you do you.
Brandy Alexander is watching a Mardi Gras parade with her family when a handsome stranger kisses her. He is then promptly shot and she makes it her mission to discover what is gong on.
This is the first book in the Go Cup series. I really don't know that I would classify it as a cozy. There was quite a bit of craziness going on that did not lend itself to the true cozy genre.
Brandy enlists her friends to help her find the mystery man and ends up at a hospital in a notoriously bad area of New Orleans. All kinds of wild hi-jinks ensue. There are strippers and drag queens and a long lost super hero.
The characters were most definitely quirky and it was a quick easy read. I'm not sure where the next book will lead since there were some unanswered questions about childhood friends and relationships.
I don't know that I will read any further at this time.
Right from the start it was too funny to put down. Brandy seems to get herself into a predicament every turn but when she was stuck in a mess while her friend was trying to work. I couldn't help but find it funny because when your on the bathroom trying to do your business and happen to hear someone snoring instead and then all he'll breaks loose because he falls. I just couldn't help but laugh. Ok so for the crime part. LOL She did get into some trouble but it also made her realize that she needed a change but whoa did things go left but All the characters are so much fun. I will definitely continue this series just so I can laugh even with the crimes. LOL
If you love the Stephanie Plum series or you love a cozy mystery set in New Orleans, you have to give this book a try! Brandy Alexander (love that name!), a New Orleans native, is attending a Mardi Gras parade when she receives a kiss from a stranger that sweeps her off her feet. At the end of the parade when she meets him for a second kiss, he is shot. And, the fun begins!
The author obviously knows the culture of New Orleans very, very well and her descriptions of the area, the parades, the French Quarter and the way that a really big city is really just a small town add a lot to this book. I loved her descriptions of the characters, ranging from the family maid who knows it all to a lawyer who once was a crime fighting duck. "Where did you go to High School?" is the recurrent question when people first meet and only those familiar with the area understand the reason behind this question.
When Brandy, her newly found beau, Jif, and his dog, Isabella, are kidnapped, she escapes to find help. She ends up at a gay bar full of stereotypical drag queens and the descriptions of this adventure had me laughing out loud. The characters in this book really come alive with the great dialogues and descriptions.
The inclusion of Brandy's love for rescuing Schnauzers added a lot to my reading pleasure as well. The dogs made the story even more enjoyable. I will definitely be reading more books in this series when I want a light-hearted, often LOL cozy mystery.
The narrator, Alyson Krawchuk, does a great job and her pronunciations were perfect (not an easy task!). The only complaint that I have with the book is the extremely long pauses at the end of each chapter. These pauses were so long that I thought my device had malfunctioned!
I was given the chance to listen to the audiobook version of this book by the narrator/publisher/author and chose to review it.
Schnauzer rescuer Brandy Alexander is tired of living with her parents, not sure what's going on in her relationship with her boyfriend, Dante, and is looking for a little fun.
She gets way more than she bargained for when she kisses a handsome stranger during a Mardi Gras parade ... as he's shot in front of her and pretty soon it seems like the New Orleans gangsters are after her, too.
This is a super-cute cozy mystery featuring dogs, intrigue, fun characters, and the Big Easy. What more could you ask for? I'll be checking out more of this series.
Well, this is an okay book. I hate Brandy's mother, though. She's awful. Good that Brandy's moving out. The only real problem I had with this is the book info says the author is from New Orleans, but a large part of the story centers around going to visit a guy who got shot and is at Charity Hospital. This hospital closed in 2005 after Katrina. This book was written in 2014. If she lives there, why did she use this hospital? Why not use one that's still open, or just make up the name of a fictional one?
Flew through this one! It was so quick and fun. I definitely laughed out loud more than once and I loooved all the New Orleans references- so many little details you have to really know to appreciate. It felt a bit thrown together and rushed at the end, but I still really enjoyed the overall plot. This was my first novel written by a New Orleans author and I am so pleased!
I loved the whole thing with her meeting Jiff but the books following where there is back and forth between Jiff and the ex boyfriend has caused me to lose interest. I am waiting until the final book to see if she ends up with Jiff and if she does I will go back and read them all!!
What an adorable story. A kiss gone deadly, no fun. Loved the way this story was written. The characters are perfect for the plot. Can’t wait for the next one.
Rescued by a Kiss isn't much of a mystery. But, it is a cute romantic comedy. At times the stupidity of the main character was too much for me. This book just seemed to be all over the place.
I enjoyed this book. New Orleans is a bright and colourful place and the perfect setting for this cozy and fun mystery to take place in.The author did a really good job writing the story and it was so easy to picture the setting or the costumes because of it. But it wasn't just the scenery that captured the imagination as I liked the characters and couldn't help but laugh at some of the antics they got up to. The mystery was good as well and I can't wait to start the next book. Move over Stephanie Plum there is a new girl in town and she is ready to party. Brandy is attending the Mardi Gras parade like she has done for as long as she can remember but she wasn't prepared for the kiss. You have to kiss one of the gentlemen in the walking parade in exchange for a paper flower, a tradition every body is happy to comply with but when Brandy gets singled out by one man in particular she gets more than she bargained for when there lips met. He asks her to meet him at the end of the parade. Surprising not only herself she does only to see him get shoot before they can exchange there names. He does whisper one name "Save Isabella". Before she can find out more he is whisked off to hospital and Brady and her friends Julia back home.Brandy has never been very good at being told what to do especially by Dante, her next door neighbour, policeman and boyfriend since the playground. So she and Julia hang up there high heels and tight skirts in order to put on disguises and go under cover. They will go up against some bad guys with guns, car thrives and crooked cops in order to save Isabella before the night is over. I liked the narrator she did a really good job with the characters giving them accents so they each sounded different.
This is a review of the story and the audiobook publication. I describe this book as a New Orleans Stephanie Plum-esque adventure in that the likeable main character (Brandy Alexander - although not a bounty hunter like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum) finds herself in smack dab in the middle of a shooting and then a kidnapping along with other trouble all within a short time of having "the kiss of her life" with a guy she didn't know at a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. I was hooked by the opening of the story and was not disappointed. There are quirky, over-the-top secondary characters (Brandy's best friend, Julie and a protector in long-time friend and neighbor, Dante- a New Orleans cop. I was interested in reading/listening to this book as I enjoy cozy mystery and grew up in New Orleans. I enjoyed hearing of streets and places I knew including it brought back memories of Sunday lunches at Ye Olde College Inn restaurant. The author, Colleen Mooney did a good job in capturing the flavor of New Orleans life and the tradition/annual event of Mardi Gras. The narrator was good and a good distinction in character voices so the story/characters were easy to follow. This book had a little of everything...mystery, romance, adventure, and humor. I look forward to reading/listening to other books in the series. I received a copy of this audiobook for free at my own request through StoryOrigin and have left this review voluntarily.
First off, let me say that I really enjoyed this story. I've given it a lower rating because it is marketed as mystery. It is not. It is a chick-lit, or a rom-com with a minor mystery thrown in. As a rom-com/chick-lit it would get a five star rating.
Brandy gets the kiss of a lifetime from a stranger at the opening parade of Mardi-Gras in New Orleans. She meets the stranger at the end of the parade just in time to witness him getting shot. She saves his dog from two thugs. Once released from the hospital Brandy and Jiff go to have lunch, as they are walking to the restaurant they get kidnapped. Brandy manages to escape, and forms the strangest rescue of Jiff that you have ever seen.
The story has well defined character, lots of laughs, and a good bit of tension and drama woven into the story. It was a fun story to read.
The first book I read from Colleen Mooney was Death By Rum Balls. I think it's the fourth book in the series. Having read that one first, this one left me a little confused as to the relationship of Brandy and Dante.
I listened to the audio version. So I’ll start with the narration. I had to get used to the narrator, but that’s always the case with me. That isn’t a bad thing, it’s just because I’m not a native English speaker, so I have to pause it every now and again at the start. But then I got used to it and it was good. I’d have liked it even more if it were a little more natural. But the accents were done well. 4 stars seems to me to be fair.
Then the story itself, because that’s what it’s all about after all! It’s mostly rom com with a bit of mystery thrown in. There were many things to love. The lightheartedness, the pace, the fun. The quirkiness! I can always appreciate a bit of quirk. But maybe it was taken a little too far at times, to the point where it got hard to believe. But it was well written and humorous! So, I believe that once again, 4 stars are fair.
Al in all I can honestly say that I would recommend this!
This was fun. I’m always hesitant when reading books set in New Orleans because non-local authors always get it wrong. Ms. Mooney made so many references that made me think of my childhood and family.
Brandy kisses a handsome marcher in a parade which sends her life in an exciting tailspin. When this handsome gentleman gets shot, Brandy and her best friend Julia are tasked with figuring out why. With tons of local references and many crazy shenanigans, their journey is hilarious.
I wouldn’t call this book risqué in the least; however, it’s set in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. There are strip clubs and gay night clubs referenced. There is no foul language or strong romance. I just wanted to add that for some. I thought it was comical considering I have been to many of the places referenced. Can’t wait to continue with the series.
This is the first novel of the New Orleans Go Cup Chronicles, it’s crazy, spicy, and fun. Lots of sexy moments leading up to the kiss between Brandy and Jiff. It pays to have friends in all kinds of places and have a good temperament. Randy is led by her devotion to her family and friends and also to the animals she strives to save and protect. How much trouble can one person get into an a day??? Seems like a whole lot!! Brandy is clever, smart, and fun to hang around with.
Ms Mooney has written a great first book, it is well written, detailed with good characterization and a solid storyline. I can’t wait to read the next book!!! And I feel basically the same way about those palmetto bugs!!! Yuck!!!
Aside from the Mardi Gras vibes, I really didn’t care for this one. It started off weirdly with the first kiss and then the shot happens and it went from there. There were a lot of shenanigans going on after that. Even though in theory, it should’ve been exciting, it really wasn’t and I was bored by it. I found myself skipping through it, just to get through it because I was not that interested. It just was not a compelling read. I didn’t connect with the characters. It was just a lot of nothingnes. And I just didn’t get it or find it amusing. It was just boring. Then the little things with the flashbacks thrown in there was strange to. I just didn’t like it. Bottom line.

Rescued by a Kiss is the first of Colleen Mooney's books I've read, and it was FAB-U-LOUS! The characters have SUCH big personalities, which include weaknesses, like the rest of us, so I completely related to them. New Orleans came alive to me through her descriptions, and was gorgeous! The criminal element was just dark enough to make me anxious about what would happen next, but not so much that it ruined the fun in the story. The ending was terrific and funny. I cant wait for the next book!
Enjoyable, entertaining romantic comedy/mystery. Not a fan of romance novels but this one keeps the romance to a minimum and concentrates on the plot and character development. Also, since this is set in my favorite city, New Orleans, during Mardi Gras, you can expect quirky characters, humor and wonderful food references. And the main character, Brandy Alexander (named by her father and uncle while drinking during her birth) rescues dogs, Schnauzers to be specific. What more could you want?
This book was a trip! I was drawn to it because the series is called "The Go-Cup Chronicles." As a South Louisiana girl, I am drawn to books with local flavor. And there is lots of local flavor in this book! Those looking for a serious story need to look elsewhere. This was just a wild goose chase through New Orleans during Mardi Gras, featuring stray dogs, mafia men, drag queens, and strippers. The story had a very lighthearted tone, as cozy mysteries typically do. I will say that it ended rather abruptly. I might pick up another one in this series when I'm in a wacky mood.
Super cute book! Lots of excitement, cute dogs, and great chactors! Loved the story! Lots of fun and twists and turns! Fantastic plot! I loved, loved it! I sympathize with Brandi's fear of roaches, I feel the same way! Laughed about her mom's driving and her escape from the bad guys! Loved the help from her friends and their fans at the bar! Easy to get caught up in the story feels like you are part of it! Hurry and get reading, you're in for a treat, enjoy!
Brandy Alexander and her best friend, Julia, are watching the parade when a stranger mesmerising gaze pulls her into the best kiss of her life. When she meets him at the end of the parade, someone shoots him. As he lies on the ground, he whispers “Take care of Isabella.” Isabella turns out to be his dog and two thugs show up and break into his penthouse to steal the dog. Then the adventure begins. Great story set in my favourite city. Recommend.
Read this book and then the whole series on kindle unlimited. They are so glad I've gone back and am purchasing all of them for my library. This book does what all good books do. It allows us to feel like we've met people we would like to know. Beyond the dynamics between Brandy, Jiff, and Dante, we get to see New Orleans in an up close and personal way. Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Happy reading!
I was approved for a review copy of Rescued by a Kiss by StoryOrigin. This was a very entertaining cozy mystery that takes place in New Orleans during Mardi Gras with a young woman, Brandy Alexander things change when she kisses a handsome stranger in a marching group. This young man whispers in her ear to meet him at the end of the parade and she is so intrigued that she goes to dangerous and funny lengths to find this man.
Girl meets boy at MadiGras parade, boy kisses girl, they meet at the end of the parade and boy gets shot. WHAT? If that isn't bad enough the girl's boyfriend who is a cop shows up and almost drags her home. Now if that doesn't make you want to read this story than maybe you just don't like a romance with a little punch Oh and don't forget the most adorable little dog either. There we have a hit- New Orleans, gorgeous girl, great looking guy, cute dog and yes the cop boyfriend. Loved it.
This was the first (of four) short stories under the Brandy Alexander Mystery Series, also titled “The New Orleans Go Cup Chronicles.” This was a very good short story, only 117 pages on the kindle. Delightful with lots of fun people, some bad people, and some suspense. I will read the other three, but preferring to hold a book and we are now allowed to get books from the library after the COVID shut-down, I’ve put the kindle reads on hold for now.
Rescued by a Kiss (The New Orleans Go Cup Chronicles) by Colleen Mooney. I really loved this book so much. It's the first novel of Colleen Mooney that I've read. So this definitely wont be the last one either. The story was definitely thrilling & enjoyable from beginning to the end. So it was fast pastes read since the book was a major page turner. I fell in love with the setting right away. Since the plot was so romantic, colorful, captivating, and mysterious. I've always enjoyed reading tales that takes place in New Orleans. In that I learned from reading Anne Rice's books. I do admit that Ms. Mooney’s description brought forth such great descriptions of Bourbon Street and the French Quarter that made me wish to be there. As well of the characters such as the protagonist Brandy Alexander. She was so lovely, sweet, & considerate to her family and loved how she constantly rescued dogs. Also her termination that never let go of the spark find out more of the mystery fellow.
I read the book and afterwards the audio which was very good too. I am definitely going to follow the series. So I'd recommend this book to anyone. Especially if you enjoy romance thrillers. I rate this book with two thumbs up & five stars.
After reading the description, I wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, that did not happen.
Ms Mooney gave me a great deal of background. In fact, we skipped from the present to events in the past on a very regular basis. I am not sure why we had to learn so much from the past because so much of it seemed not actually related to the plot.
Brandy is an adult woman who is terrified of roaches. Actually, that part was understandable to me. That fear is also my fear. But, I digress.
I wanted to enjoy the book, but there was too much description. I would have enjoyed more actual events and less description. The descriptions were often too detailed about things which were not very relevant.
There was humor, and that is always something I like. But, it seemed too forced.
The plot became a little unbelievable. Again, I wanted to love this book. I simply could not.
It is a quick read. It is quite evident that it is the first in a series because the book ended very quickly with some plot points up in the air.
Ms Mooney is a talented author. I am sure that the next book will be much more to my liking.
