Emmie finds shelter in the arms of a soldier, but her secret could drive them apart.
When Emmie Croftner answered the door to her late husband's home, she discovered a terrible truth. A woman she's never met reveals that she and Emmie shared the same husband and that the bigamist had never divorced his first wife. The home and farm are not Emmie's property after all.
Suddenly displaced and powerless, Emmie realizes she can't stay in Wabash, Indiana, any longer. She makes for Fort Laramie, Wyoming, where her friend Sarah Montgomery and a new beginning await her. But when she arrives, she discovers she's carrying a child, conceived before her husband's death. Was the new start she'd hoped for only a mirage?
At Fort Laramie, a soldier named Isaac Liddle begins to court Emmie, prompting her to wonder whether she could ever really be his--and whether she dares to tell him she is carrying another man's baby.
USAToday bestselling author Colleen Coble lives with her husband, Dave, in Arizona. She is the author of dozens of novels including the Rock Harbor Series, the Aloha Reef Series, the Mercy Falls Series, the Hope Beach Series, the Lonestar Series and two Women of Faith fiction selections, Alaska Twilight and Midnight Sea. She has more than 6 million books in print.
Book 4 in the Journey of the Heart series pivots main characters from Sarah to Emmie. Sarah and all the rest are still in the story, but now it's Emmie's turn. I felt terribly for her, learning that her late husband was a bigamist and she wasn't his first wife! She's left with next to nothing and decides to go stay with Sarah and her family. The ending was a bit of a shocker, I hope she can make the best of it.
I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Colleen Coble is one of my favorite authors, so when I saw A Heart's Betrayal on Netgalley I knew I had to give it a try. I was not disappointed.
After the tragic death of her new husband, Emmie Croftner is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life only to be hit with another blow, her husband was legally married to another woman. What will she do? Emmie journeys out west to be with her friend, Sarah Montgomery, at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Will this be the new beginning Emmie needs?
Emmie is a resilient woman who has had a hard life. She is willing to work hard for a better future. This is a quick read that will leave you wanting more. I look forward to reading the next installment.
Well short large print I picked up for a pink cover challenge, ended up using for Indiana book, but could be Wyoming as well. This is part 4 in the series but I don’t know if there is anything else I can find from the library, Libby or Hoopla. Will update later.
I really liked this latest novella in the Journey of the Heart series. It is book four of the series and can stand alone, but it is even better when read after the first three novellas.
Poor Emmie! This book’s title truly does reflect what has happened to her. She has been betrayed in one of the worst ways. Played the fool and now feeling ostracized, she chooses to make the journey to Wyoming to hopefully begin again.
This novella does not have as much danger or suspense as books two and three. It is primarily the story of Emmie trying to start over after her heart has been crushed. Overwhelmed with what has happened to her, she decides that she can’t risk opening herself up to another man. I think the author did a very good job of portraying the betrayal, the embarrassment, and the feelings of helplessness that Emmie finds herself dealing with. I am really looking forward to book five in the series.
My thanks to the publisher for the complimentary copy of this book that I received through Litfuse Publicity in exchange for an honest review.
A Heart’s Betrayal, By: Colleen Coble This is book four in The Journey of the Heart Series. I just love how the book picks up and continues from the last book in the series. This one pulls on your heartstrings so. A yearning for all that is wrong to be righted. For the one that is so brokenhearted to feel loved again. You will be yearning for the next book in the series so that you can see what happens next. I know that I am anxiously awaiting that book. A wonderful quick read. Be sure to get your copy today. 5 stars!
A good story, but a trifle wooden in the execution. I definitely like Coble's writing better in a contemporary setting. However, what ruined it most was the back cover copy...it's only a summary of what happens in the book, including the last chapter! Don't read the synopsis for this one.
I am enjoying the historical setting and the characters in this series.
A Heart’s Betrayal by Colleen Coble is Book Four in the “Journey of the Heart” series. Each of these books is a quick, easy read. Each contains romance and suspense. In A Heart’s Betrayal, we get to know more about Emmie, the sister of Ben Croftner, who was a thorn in Rand Campbell’s side.
Emmie learns some shocking news about her husband of only three months, after he is killed in an accident; news that will negatively affect her life in many ways if she remains in Wabash, Indiana. She has no family near to help her in any way, so she remembers that someone in town mentioned that Sarah Campbell was lonely for some woman friends, as she was living at a military fort in the west with her husband, Rand Campbell. So, Emmie decides to go west.
When Emmie reaches the fort, she is not impressed with the surroundings, although she does think that men in uniform are attractive. However, she has decided that she will never trust another man and wants nothing to do with one. But then she meets Isaac Liddle, and her resolves starts to waiver.
Then she is hit by more news that she sees as negative for her situation — she’s pregnant!
I really enjoyed this story. I finished reading it in about two or three hours. I couldn’t put it down. I just felt so bad for Emmie and all that she is going through in this story. I couldn’t wait to find out how things will work out for her. Then I reached the end of the book and found that Colleen Coble left me hanging again! This was the norm when these books were first published — writers would end a book in a series in a cliff hanger, to assure that his/her readers would not be able to resist the next one in the series when it came out. It’s definitely effective for a writer, who can pull it off well, and Colleen Coble is one of those writers.
If you haven’t read any of the “Journey of the Heart” series, I highly recommend it. If you have been reading it, I highly recommend you read A Heart’s Betrayal, even though, A Heart’s Danger – Book Three seemed to have a good ending. You won’t want to miss Emmie’s story. It’s just as good as Sarah’s.
I recommend this book to anyone who has read the first three books in the “Journey of the Heart” series. I recommend this book even if you haven’t read the first three books, as this is about a new main character, even though many characters from the first three books are a part of the story. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a book that is easy to read and doesn’t take a lot of time to finish reading, as well as anyone who enjoys stories of the old West, and stories of romance and suspense.
Title: A HEART’S BETRAYAL Author: Colleen Coble Publisher: Thomas Nelson June 2015 ISBN 978-0-529-10343-7 Genre: Historical romance serial Series: Journey of the Heart book 4
Emmie finds shelter in the arms of a soldier, but her secret could drive them apart.
When Emmie Croftner answered the door to her late husband’s home, she discovered an awful truth: her deceased husband was a bigamist. And what’s more, the home she thought she inherited never belonged to her at all.
Suddenly displaced, powerless, and ashamed, Emmie can’t stay in Wabash, Indiana. She makes a hopeful start for Fort Laramie, Wyoming, to find her friend Sarah Montgomery and a new beginning. But when she arrives, she discovers she’s pregnant—and without a husband. The new start she’d hoped for slips from her fingers.
But then she meets Isaac Liddle, a handsome soldier with a kind heart. When he begins to court her, Emmie wonders whether she could ever really be his—and whether she dares to tell him she is carrying another man’s baby.
A HEART’S BETRAYAL is the fourth book in Ms. Coble’s serial series Journey of the Heart. This story is actually the beginning of a new book, so it would stand alone, separate from the first three in the series. But this is intended to be read immediately following the first three A Heart’s Obsession, A Heart’s Danger, and A Heart’s Promise. The two books these stories (Where Leads the Heart and Plains of Promise) were pulled from were previously published with Heartsong Presents, but have been out of print for over ten years.
Fans of historical fiction will want to read these books. There is a hint of suspense, but not so much as her current books. The romance is light and sweet. There isn’t as much meat or substance and her characters aren’t as well developed in these books as there are in her more recent books.
I am a huge fan of Ms. Coble’s contemporary romantic suspense, but these, not so much. Still some might enjoy them… but that said they are a serial. Only one-third of a book or one-sixth of a book (depending on how you look at it) for $6.99 a section (in print). By the time you bought three, you’d be paying close to $21.00. Rather pricy for a romance… If you bought all six, it would be almost $42.00.
3 stars. Available in print, audio, and MP3 CD. 120 pages.
I obtained this book from the publisher, via Litfuse, in exchange for a review.
I was very excited about Emmie's story. It seemed like it would be full of intrigue and romance. We haven't really gotten to the romance part yet, but this was definitely an interesting installment to this story. I enjoyed this novella, but I did end up wishing Emmie was a more confident, take charge type of person. She just kind of lets life take her where it will and I wanted her to be more adventurous and stand up for herself.
We see more of a Rand and Sarah in this book. I'm still not a fan of Rand, but he's mostly in the background now. I was surprised that this installment was mostly about the women in the story. Emma and Sarah join back up with Amelia and surprise ALL THREE of them are pregnant. That was a little over the top for me. I am interested to see what impact that has on the story in the future though. I wish all three women wouldn't be quite so naive about the life they've chosen to live. Being concerned about never getting to leave the fort for like picnics and stuff when soldiers who leave are being scalped left and right was kind of ridiculous to me. Hello, you're in a war zone. I do want to see Isaac meet someone and be happy. Of course ultimately that will be Emmie. I’m not sure what they’ll be like together, but I’m glad Isaac isn’t just gonna be on his own. I found his explanation for his feelings for Sarah a little flimsy, however.
Overall, this book required a lot of suspension of disbelief. It was still a quick, entertaining read. I do want to know what happens in the rest of the story. But splitting this story into short novella's was a great idea. Had this been on long novel I probably would have given up on it halfway through. As it is each installment is just enough to keep me curious without being too over the top all at once.
*I received an ARC of this title from LitFuse Publicity in exchange for an honest review.
A Heart’s Betrayal, by Colleen Coble, is book four of a six-part Journey of the Heart series that takes place during the mid 1800s. It’s an emotionally charged read and difficult to put down.
“This is going to come as quite a shock to you, and I’m truly sorry for that.” ~ A Heart’s Betrayal
Emmie’s late husband had secrets and wasn’t the man she’d once though he was. That troubling truth is compounded by the fact that what she thought was left to her doesn’t belong to her at all! To escape the shame and embarrassment, she hopes to start over in Laramie, Wyoming—but she soon discovers the past isn’t so easy to leave behind.
I really like this unique ‘mini’ story series concept. Each installment is easily read in a day, but though the stories are short, they lack nothing in content. Brimming with action, adventure, and love, the characters are flawed, believable, and sympathetic. I am sucked into the series.
Even though it’s unconventional (and totally unplanned to read this series out of order) each installment has been full and interesting on its own. I’ve grown to love these characters and can’t wait to delve further in their lives.
I’ve read other works by Colleen Coble and I’ve never been disappointed. From the settings to the character arcs, I love every aspect of her writings, and can’t wait to read the complete Journey of the Heart series.
4.5 Stars
Cover: Love it Title: Love it Publisher: Thomas Nelson Pages: 112 Pace: Fast First lines: The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway echoed in the shrouded darkness of the parlor. Emmie Courtney sat on the black horsehair sofa, her hands clasped in the folds of her silk skirt.

I am really enjoying this series. This episode concentrates on Emmie, the sister of Ben, nemesis to Sarah and Rand in the first three episodes. She was a plain girl and when a man showed her attention, she fell for him. A whirlwind romance and marriage. Then, only a few months later, he is killed in a horse and buggy accident. Then a horrible truth comes to light. He was already married and his first wife has rights to nearly everything. Emmie, homeless in Wabash, Indiana, goes to Fort Laramie to be with Sarah. This is a good study in a woman taken in by a deceptive man. She is hurt deeply. Even when she is at Fort Laramie and men pay attention to her, she is very hesitant to trust a man again. Life gets really interesting when Emmie finds out she is pregnant. Who would want her, pregnant with someone else's child? We are off to a good start in this second half of the series. See my complete review at http://bit.ly/1cMo0AV. I received a complimentary egalley of this novella through Litfuse for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
This is the fourth in a six-part serial style release. Journey of the Heart is a reissue of the author's first series, now out of print.
While I love Coble's writing, I'm not a fan of this serialization model. It's like I'm being given tantalizing snippets and then forced to wait a whole month before I can have another taste. Talk about an author keeping the reader wanting more!
A Heart's Betrayal's heroine is Emmie Croftner, sister to the nefarious series villain, Ben Croftner. Thankfully, Emmie isn't anything like her brother and when dire circumstances conspire against her she goes West where she meets up with Rand and Sarah (hero and heroine of the first three novellas.) There's action and drama aplenty and the first stirrings of romance. But be forewarned -- there's also a cliff hanger ending that will leave a reader dangling breathlessly for a whole month!
My thanks to Thomas Nelson and Litfuse Publicity Group for providing me with a review copy of this book.
This is the fourth book in this set of small books and I guess it is starting a new storyline. Having read the first three books this one introduces us to new characters while including the others. I'm not too excited about this new storyline to be honest. Emmie finds out she is married to a married man who has a child. But now they are both widowed and things get complicated. I have to finish this series but I'm not really sure where things are going. I love the cover of these new little books but they are too short for my liking. Anyway, if you have started this series I recommend you keep reading.
"I received this book from Litfuse for free in exchange for an honest review."
After Emmie's husband dies, she finds out the horrible truth. He's married to another woman. She leaves for Fort Laramie, Wyoming to be with her friend Sarah Montgomery. There, Emmie finds out she's pregnant.
Wyoming, its beauty, and danger mix to create an adventurous story. Indians are upset their land is being taken over and are on the warpath. Tribes have united to stop the progress of the whites.
This series has been exciting. The reader rides stagecoaches, horses, and wagons. Ever-present danger makes a thrilling read. I love it and look forward to the next book.
Welcome to, what I'm terming as, part two of the Journey of the Heart series. This book introduces us to Emmie Croftner, Ben Croftner's sister and reintroduces us to Isaac Liddle. We also get a glimpse into Rand and Sarah's life after A Heart's Danger. Read my full review: http://faithlovebooks.blogspot.com/20...
I would give this one 3.5☆ A change of pace in this book and the start of a new beginning in a way. I have a feeling that this book could've been combined with the last two in the series and the first 3 could've been put into one. Still, enjoyable short stories.
Emmie felt like her life had been finally improving, after her marriage to Monroe gave her the life she always wanted but never received with the town drunk as her father. But when he was killed after they'd married for 3 months in tragic carriage accident, then she discovers that he was already married when he married her so their marriage was null and void and she is destitute again. Knowing that when word gets around town about her now soiled reputation she won't be able to hold her head up in public, she jumps at the chance to move out west to spend time with Sarah who is now expecting her first child. While she is surrounded by eligible bachelors she is determined to remain single. She can't let anyone know about the truth behind her marriage, and the hurt she feels by being betrayed like that hardens her resolve to remain single the rest of her life. When Isaac seems to keep finding reasons to be around her her will starts to weaken, but she knows that if she falls for him, he will learn the truth and be so appalled he will just break her heart all over again. This story is starting to pick up. You see the aftermath of Sarah and Rand's story, and the new story just adds to it. I do find it fairly unlikely that she would have gone as long she did before finding out about Ben, and I feel like they found as many politically correct ways to refer to a prostitute or kept woman as they could without coming right out and saying it, although Emmie wasn't those, just would have been regarded as one back in those days
I enjoyed how author treat the subject in this Journey of the Hear #4. Emmie Croftner was a newly married person and now to find that her newly deceased husband was a bigamist, added to this knowledge was finding out that she was pregnant. What will happen to her and then she was befriended by another soldier and he began to court her, but she had a secret. Would he still want to be her friend when he found out that she was pregnant with her deceased husband. It was well written as the author turned this nightmare into a blessing when Isaac Liddle the soldier who had befriended her now wanted to marry her and giving her unborn child a father. In the end this couple starts a new life out together.
When Emmie answers the door after her husband passed away, she opened the door to a nightmare. She had to leave town and heads for Fort Laramie where her friend Sarah now lives. Emmie's old life goes with her, though. Her new start seems to be thwarted. Will she be able to overcome? This is the fourth in the Journey of the Heart short stories by Colleen Coble. Loving these stories.
The publisher should’ve bound books 1-3 together. And let books 4-6 be a book 2. Carrying around all these tiny books is cumbersome. This is the main reason for the rating.
This story was more a romance than a suspense—like this author is more known for. It was a good story overall, just poorly bound.
This fourth book in the series started out with a whole new character so it took a bit for me to get back into the story. Emmie heads to Fort Laramie to find Sarah. Sarah and Rand take her in. She learns she is pregnant. Life at the Fort was hard. But Rand, Jacob and Isaac tend to their duties as soldiers.
I had no idea what to expect with this book. I was very disappointed with how it ended. I’m not sure why this was a mini book. The author should have just put it with the other mini book and just created a large book. The ending was so abrupt I thought I was missing something. I’ve never read a story that ended so abruptly without any sort of conclusion.
3,5 stars. The third book in this series changes up the story, as there is a new main character and Sarah becomes the side character. As of now, I like this story a little better than the story in the first three books. I should just stop reading the synopsis on the back cover though because it is pretty much a complete summary of the whole story. I really don’t get why they did that.
I liked all these books. This one was about Emmie. Her husband is deceased. She learns he had secrets that she was unaware of. With no place to go she remembers her good friend Sarah in Fort Laramie. so she travels there and is happy Sarah takes her in. When she meets Isaac their friend, she wonders how much she should reveal.
Interesting premise. I find it odd that she would not be able to confide this information right from the start with her close friend. She's obviously not a loose woman and surely her good friend knows that.
I enjoyed this 4th installment of the Heart’s series. A new character is introduced by the name of Emmie. I really like her character and am rooting for her to finally find happiness. Fun quick read.
When Emmie Croftner is widowed after only three months of marriage she can't believe things could get any worse. That is until she opens the door one night to come face to face with her husbands true wife and small child who she knew nothing about.
