Windrock Mountain Bear: Bears of Pinerock County Next Gen

Rate this book
It's a new start for the next generation of Pinerock bear shifters, building a town together in the wilderness!

Windrock, Montana is a nothing but an overgrown ghost town. But Sebastian "Baz" Hayes and his friends, as the newly formed Windrock Clan, are determined to turn it into a proper home for the wild bear clans of the Pinerock Mountain wilderness.

To get there, they'll have to create a town out of nothing, and a community from a group of very different people struggling to get along, each of them hiding secrets. And in the middle of all of it, Baz is about to find his fated mate ...

Arden is running away from her entire life. She never found anywhere to run to before.

Once a painter and free spirit, Arden lost everything in a messy divorce. Crashing for a few days in an abandoned cabin in the Montana wilderness seems like the best of a lot of bad options.

But then she wakes up to find that the ghost town has come to life around her, filled with a group of people she would love to be part of. Although some of them seem to ... turn into bears?

And she can't understand why their stunningly handsome leader, with his sparkling hazel eyes and quick smile, has such a powerful draw to her, tempting her out of her self-imposed isolation.

But how can she love Baz when her past could come calling at any minute? Because Arden is hiding a devastating secret, and if it ever comes out, it could crack the fragile, newly formed Windrock Clan right down the middle, not to mention ending any chance she and Baz have at happiness.

If you love small towns, found families, fated mates, laughter and love, get in on the ground floor of the Windrock Clan, Pinerock Next Generation! (And you'll see a few of your favorites too, because they just can't stay out of their kids' business.)

Bear shifter romance (tm)

Baz is "alpha" of his small group of cousins, who have been given a dilapidated town by their parents to establish their own clan. These shifters are young, I'd guess mid-20's, and have some experience with construction and ranch life. Sound like a terrible idea? Yeah, to me too. Baz is a nice guy.

Baz's mate is young, recently divorced, and running away from all her problems. We don't get to know who her husband was, why she left him, why she thinks shifters won't like her if they know who she is, or basically anything else about her backstory until about halfway through the book. A POV character knowing a thing and not sharing it to create mystery is a pet peeve of mine.

This is Lauren Esker, so I thought it would get better, but it just doesn't. I don't really like the main couple. I want to shake my head at these kids' stupidity, like, a lot. All the cousins are more interesting than the main couple.

The conflict is pretty mild, the romance is kind of slow burn (no sex until the end) and the main focus is on building up the town. It made me think way too much about plumbing. And how they don't have any.

This paranormal romance about a bear shifter and his family forming a new group has a really nice core idea. The characters are well developed, and the overall plot is engaging enough to keep you reading.
However, some details pulled me out of the story. The shifters are grizzly bears, yet they behave more like a wolf pack—both in dynamics and terminology (constantly called a “pack” instead of a group of bears). That lack of alignment between animal traits and behavior made it feel a bit inconsistent.
The storyline around the heroine escaping her abusive husband is interesting, but the pacing of that reveal is quite slow—you don’t fully understand what she’s running from until well into the book. There are also a few confusing elements around her situation, particularly regarding her divorce and what it means for her safety, which didn’t feel entirely clear or realistic.
Overall, it’s somewhere between okay and good—a solid premise with good characters, but some details and inconsistencies made it harder to fully enjoy.

“Windrock Mountain Bear” is a well-written paranormal, shifter love story with family, friends, fated mates, suspenseful intrigue, and second chances. The world building and blend of paranormal and romance really makes this an engaging, page turner. The characters (main and supportive) are layered and drive their journey. The featured characters of Arden and Baz (Sebastian) are a compelling pair. Arden has learned to rely on her determination and grit to manage her personal conflict. Bax is protective and just as determined as he discovers that Arden is his fated mate. I love their dynamic as individuals and as a charming couple. I also love the mix of Baz with his family as the next generation in this story & the building of Windrock. “Windrock Mountain Bear” is an excellent blend of paranormal and romance and a read worthy Book 1 of Windrock Clan series.

4.25 stars. This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a mostly sweet, fated mates, contemporary shifter romance between Arden, the female human artist lead looking for a new home after divorcing her abusive politician husband, and Baz, the male bear shifter lead starting a new clan with his cousins/siblings. This story is the beginning of a new series by this author. I enjoyed Arden’s courage and the self-confidence she was building. I enjoyed Baz’s convictions and determination to succeed. I enjoyed the introduction of many characters who will, presumably, get their own stories later. I enjoyed the distinctive personalities and the subtle (and less subtle) clashes foreshadowed. I enjoyed the ending.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

Hiding from her ex, Arden finds herself at a ghost town and hopes to stay there for a while. Baz and his cousins have been given Windrock as their inheritance, a place for them to start their own clan and be a place the wild shifters can go to to learn more about the human world. Discovering Arden, Baz realises that she is important to him, but as the cousins struggle to decide who will be the alpha and Arden's past comes to light, not only may their plans go awry but Baz may lose Arden. This is a beautiful, engaging, second chance story that I found to be a page turner. A dual POV that adds to the story, it has enough suspense and drama to be a story that I had to read in one sitting. The first in this series and I can't wait for the next one and find out how the clan and town develop.

Arden is on the run from her ex husband and ends up in a deserted old town. Baz and his cousins have been given the town by their parents to start a new shifter clan. What follows is the adventures as they get to know each other and the characters that live in the area.
This book is a satisfying romance that has also allowed lots of room for more books to follow in the series. I haven’t read books in the previous series about the parents but I didn’t feel that I missed anything although I will go back to read them as I really like this world and the wonderful characters in it. This is a fabulous book!.

This is Book 1 of the Windrock Clan series. And a wonderful start it is! Look forward to more from this world.

'Features a 'protector hero, runaway divorced heroine, and a found family creating a town and community from scratch.'

The characters drove the storyline and they were so very appealing and likeable and complicated and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and intense and exciting and well paced. World building was excellent and impressive. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

Grab a copy, kick back and enjoy!.

Arden came here to hide out after her really bad divorce... she thought that the ghost town was abandoned.. she had no idea that a new town was being built... and Baz never thought that his fated mate would be hiding here... this was so sweet !!! and so good !!!.

Book 1 of Windrock Clan series, this is about Arden and Baz. Arden has been running and hiding since she got a divorce. Baz is trying to make a safe place for shifters and becomes the alpha of the clan. Through trials, threats, secrets and hard work, they start to rebuild the town, and find a chance at happiness again. I appreciated that Arden stopped running, finding a love she was willing to stay for. I liked that Baz was patient and a showed Arden she is enough and belongs.

Bas and Arden

A very satisfying read. Bear shifter Bas and human Arden meet in a ghost town. The attraction is instantaneous but Arden is on the run from a powerful ex and Bas is still finding his footing as alpha of the Windrock Clan. However, Fate doesn't care about bad timing. Between a raging storm, a threatening ex, a clan of suspicious forest shifters, and clan in-fighting, Windrock Clan may not survive. Lauren Esker weaves humor, danger, and romance into the first story of this entertaining series which I think you'll enjoy.

I have... mixed feelings about this new series. It took a long time for me to really get into (although how much of that is due to my own struggling brain this month, I don't know), and - as is totally on brand for me - I wanted Arden and Baz to freaking TALK honestly to each other far sooner than they actually did. I'm *curious* about the backstory with Declan as well, but I'm not sure if I'm curious enough to put up with his general arseholery for an entire book.

I'll likely read the next one, but I'm not sure if I'll end up reading the entire series.

An interesting and enjoyable start to the next generation of Pinerock Bears as Baz and his cousins move into the old town of Windrock. There are fun moments as well as tension amongst them as the debate regarding the Alpha occurs. Added to this is Arden who is camping and hiding out from the group as she flees from her former life. I enjoyed the attraction between Baz and Arden as he tries to protect her. I really look forward to more in this series.

A gentle start to a new series that still has plenty of action , strong characters and lots of mystery . It can stand alone as a story but I am really looking forward to the next book as all the characters in this one have enough quirks to make it very interesting indeed.

This is the first book in a new series.
This is a new author for me and I thought
I would give this book ago and I’m not sorry
I did.
I found the plot was well developed with enough
action drama and romance that made it a worthwhile
read.

An interesting follow-up or spin-off from the Pinerock Bears, as this new series is about their children. We meet all of them, now in their 20 and so adult, but still with the same frictions as before. The Pinerock bears bought for them a ghost town as a new ground to start a pack of their own - Not too far away, so the parents can help if needed.
In their first story Baz finds his mate in Arden, a young woman fleeing notoriety and her ex, an anti-shifter politician.
It makes for an interesting plot.

Baz and Arden get their HEA despite secrets that are being kept.

Although this story didn't pull me in, it's well written, with good characters, and a good storyline.

The dynamic between Baz and Arden is very heartwarming and throbbing at once. I like how he knew she was around at the lake in the beginning but he didn't want to scare her.
