The truth could cost her everything.

Her whole life, Ava Carson has been sure of one thing: she doesn’t measure up to her mother’s expectations. So when Mitchell Carson sweeps into her life with his adorable son, the ready-made family seems like a dream come true. In the blink of an eye, she’s married, has a new baby, and life is wonderful.

Or is it?

When her picture-perfect marriage begins unraveling at the seams, Ava convinces herself she can fix it. It’s temporary. It’s the stress. It’s Mitchell’s tragic history of loss.

If only Ava could believe her own excuses.

Mitchell is no longer the charming, thoughtful man she married. He grows more controlling by the day, revealing a violent jealous streak. His behavior is recklessly erratic, and the unanswered questions about his past now hint at something far more sinister than Ava can stomach. Before she can fit the pieces together, Mitchell files for divorce and demands full custody of their boys.

Fueled by fierce love for her children and aided by Graham Thomas, a new attorney in town, Ava takes matters into her own hands, digging deep into the past. But will finding the truth be enough to beat Mitchell at his own game?

Center of Gravity weaves a chilling tale, revealing the unfailing and dangerous truth that things—and people—are not always what they seem.

I guess it's fitting that this book is my 1000th review here on Goodreads. It's a personal one so if you don't like that kind of thing don't read my review. I'm not attention whoring on it. This review is for me. I thought I had no triggers when reading, this book proved to me that I'm wrong.

Ava is married to Mitchell Carson. We see that he is a bit controlling over her when the book begins. She has a new baby (Sam) and has recently adopted Jack who is from a previous marriage of Mitchell's. She knows that Mitchell doesn't care as much for the new baby since he really wasn't ready for a new child but she pushes onward. Even after Mitchell sends in her resignation to her job as a school guidance counselor.
They end up getting in a big argument over the fact that Ava can't seem to do anything right. She doesn't manage the couple of hundred dollars a month that he gives her for groceries, gas and other household duties, she spends too much time with the boys, so many things that she just doesn't measure up with. She in a fit of anger asks if they need time apart.
Mitchell reacts to this by moving out. He gets even more aggressive towards Ava. Then he calls and wants the boys for a few hours. Ava agrees and then when the boys aren't returned she calls him. He is not giving the boys back. He files for divorce and total custody.

Then a whole new side of Mitchell starts to emerge. He calls every lawyer in the area so that Ava can't use them. Except for the one new guy Graham who has some demons of his own.
Mitchell is a big wig at the college so he has lots of pull. The judge automatically sides with him and his lawyer (who happens to be the judge's buddy) Ava is excluded from her boys.

It escalates even more when Mitchell starts telling people including Jack that his mom is having an affair and that she is a drunk. He even does things to set her up to make her look even more unstable.

Ava at first will come off as weak to some readers. I however, have been in her position so I felt for this character the entire story. She does not bad mouth her soon to be ex-husband. She just wants her boys to have a stable happy life.

There are multiple viewpoints that the story is told from Ava, Mitchell (you get inside the monster of this man-even to the fact that he believes his behavior is completely fine), Graham (her attorney), The psychiatrist that the court appointed to help decide on custody arrangements and eight year old Jack. Jack's point of view did read much older than his years but in cases of divorce and child custody children age faster than normal so it didn't take away from the book for me. His thoughts revolve around his younger brother Sam and how to save the world and fix everything as one of his heroes. The superheroes found in his comic books.

Whenever I'd get mad or upset, she'd give me a stick of gum instead of a lecture. Like, to say, instead of freaking out, wait five minutes, think about things. Whatever's wrong might not seem so bad then.

Now if you follow my reviews you know I can read just about anything. Serial killers? Piece of cake. Gory horror, doesn't even give me pause.
This book? It gutted me. I had to actually stop reading so many times because tears blurred my vision. Last night my husband asked me why I was punishing myself by reading this book.

I wanted someone even if it was a book character to get their happily ever after even if it was fictional.

It's been over two years since I've spoken or been able to see my daughter. It's been the hardest years of my entire life. My ex-husband also painted a tainted picture of me. Did I have a clue? Not at all.
Don't think it can't happen to you.
We had been divorced for over ten years. We had attended extensive parenting classes that told us to never talk badly about the other parent that it would come back to bite you in the end.
I never did. I can honestly sit here and type this with a completely clear conscience of that. He on the other hand. Every time one of my children and I would have an argument and he found out about it he would make sure they knew he was the "cooler" parent and that they could move in with him at anytime.
Two years ago my daughter got mad because I freaked out about something that she was doing. I thought that we had worked everything out. Little did I know that he was picking her up at school and working to gain custody of her.
We went to court several times and I was painted horribly. I had always been very close with her and I admit that I was so crushed during that time period that I wasn't completely thinking straight. That's what this woman in this book went through also.
You never imagine that you can be manipulated by the courts and a lawyer that is friendly with the judges. Guess again people.

My story is long and drawn out and I'm not going into particulars. I do think that parental alienation should be a crime. I think the courts should investigate further when these cases come up. Not just for the parent with the most money or connections. Love can't be bought.

Anyways. This book. I hope to everything that this author is not writing from experience. She does an amazing job of it if she's not. She writes like she knows this pain. She gets five stars from me. Not because I liked the book-Like I said it was painful for me and I had nightmares last night. But BECAUSE SOMEONE NEEDS TO KNOW THEY AREN'T THE ONLY ONE GOING THROUGH SOMETHING LIKE THIS.

4.5 Stars! "Center of Gravity" is a high-octane drama/mystery/psychological thriller! The book grips the reader quite early and then takes off. It is an emotional roller coaster and I found myself tearing up several times!

Ava seems to have the perfect life. She is married to a very handsome man, Mitchell, lives in a beautiful home and has 2 wonderful children (Sam, her 1 year old and Jack her 8 year old stepson that she has since adopted). Tiny cracks begin to show in her marriage and then one day "bam" Mitchell decides to leave her, file for divorce, and take the children seeking sole custody. Ava is left a mess not knowing what to do so she seeks out counsel. This is an ordeal in itself because her husband is such a big shot in the area. With only the diamond ring on her finger to use as a retainer she finally finds a lawyer, Graham, to help her. Graham (who is sort of picking up the pieces himself) helps her put the pieces back together in finding out who her husband truly is.

Within weeks the book unravels and we see exactly who Mitchell is, a sociopath, who is very dangerous and determined to never let Ava see her boys again. Several times I felt chills! I mean this guy was pure evil!

Laura McNeill does a fantastic job of telling the story through multiple points of view, including Jack (Ava's stepson). Although seeming quite mature for an 8 year old, Jack's point of view still works well in the story. How we the reader see everything pan out in Jack's eyes, and how he uses comic book heroes as coping mechanisms is so well done! Just excellent!

I'm not going to say much more in fear of giving out spoilers, but I highly recommend this fast-paced, highly addictive, emotional ride and I look forward to McNeill's next novel!

Center of Gravity by Laura McNeill was an entertaining read with likable and dis-likable characters and a plot that is fast paced and entertaining.

Do you really know to whom you are married !

Ava Carson thinks she is happily married with a loving family and an attentive husband until suddenly his attentions become overbearing and lead down a road she had never expected to travel.

This is one of those page turners that you just want someone to get their come comeuppance and the sooner the better. It's an entertaining read with plenty of twists and turns but not one of my favorite physiological thrillers.

I think this book read itself, I was turning the pages so quickly. Every Mother's fear and every women's nightmare is encompassed here. I don't think I ever wanted for a bad guy to get his, nor have hated a character more than Mitchell. Told in alternating chapters by Ava, Mitchell, Jack, the children's court appointed moderator and Ava'a lawyer, we hear all sides of this chilling story.

I loved the character of Laura, the way she took care of her children, the games she played and how she wanted them to feel happy and secure. But the real star of the book, the one who won my heart was eight year old Jack. A young boy who has seen and heard more than any child his age should. He loves super heroes and using them he works on his problems, plays with his one year old brother Sam and uses them both to boost his courage and take out his aggression to the things he feels he is unable to change. Absolutely wonderful.

I think the absolute scariest thing about this novel is that it all could ne true. It could happen to any of is and I am sure it has.

4.5s

Ava Carson had the family life she had always dreamed of – a devoted husband in Mitchell, along with his gorgeous eight year old son Jack whom she had recently adopted, and their newborn Sam – her life was complete; her happiness great. But slowly cracks began to appear – Mitchell became very unpredictable; his temper would flare at the slightest word. She spoke to him about returning to work; she loved her job at Jack’s school and had taken leave to have Sam. But Mitchell wouldn’t hear of it – she was to remain at home, caring for their children. When he saw her talking to a childhood friend; the local cop – he was incensed. Jealously reared its ugly head; Ava was shocked; she couldn’t understand what was happening to her loving husband…

With crushing suddenness Mitchell took the two boys from Ava and filed for divorce. Stunned, she had no idea what to do; where to turn. She pleaded with her husband but he was vindictive and nasty. When she realized nothing would work and her beautiful boys were getting more out of reach, Ava enlisted a lawyer and they decided she would take matters into her own hands. Digging into Mitchell’s past may not help, but it was all she could do. With chilling clarity, Ava began to realize she didn’t know her husband at all. But would she be able to return her boys to her side; to her arms? The journey would be traumatic and dangerous; but it must be done…

Wow! Gripping and intense, Center of Gravity is a psychological thriller with bite! It is my first by author Laura McNeill and I wasn’t disappointed. Filled with emotion and heartache, a mother’s love and the trauma of children torn apart by estrangement, it was a creepy and deeply suspenseful book. I loved the character of Jack – an adorable little boy who was confused by his feelings for the two people he loved. I have no hesitation in recommending Center of Gravity highly.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy to read and review.

Predictable but compelling story about a controlling man who will stop at nothing to discredit his wife and take her children. Ugh. This is such a familiar story- a perfect marriage starts to disintegrate as the husband becomes controlling, manipulative, and abusive. The kids are caught in the middle, the courts are in favor of the "upstanding citizen." You've read about and seen this played out a million times on TV and in the newspapers. It is maddening. Laura McNeill manages to tell this story with heart and readers will find themselves scrambling for the reveal.

DNF @ 30% = No Rating

There is nothing wrong with this book whatsoever. I DNF'd only because it felt too real. I personally can't stomach contemporary stories about domestic aggression, even when it's primarily the hands-off type featured in this novel (at least it was hands off during the first 30%).

The husband in Center of Gravity uses all of his very impressive resources (even the children) to threaten, isolate, and spread lies about the wife. The stress I was feeling during my short-lived reading experience was literally turning my stomach and that doesn't make for a pleasurable escape for me personally. But if you enjoy getting lost in suspense/thrillers, dramas, and mysteries then I do recommend this book.

My only complaint is that while listening to the audio, I found it a bit difficult to differentiate the multiple POV's. Even though the narrator states the name of the character at the beginning of each perspective, she didn't alter her voice much at all from what I remember. But that may be sufficient for some audiobook readers.

Again, I want to reiterate that there is nothing wrong with this book other than the fact that readers may be prone to cursing out the aggressor while he gets his way. Bastard.

Ava thought she had the perfect life, the perfect marriage till it all crashed down on her.Ava was unaware of her husband's dark secrets and I think she was in denial about their life together. She made excuses for his jealousy and control habits and blamed herself for not being a good wife. Her love for her children Jack from a previous marriage of Mitchell's whose wife has died..and their child together sam. She couldn't of been a more devoted mother.

Like overnight Mitchell turned into this man Ava didn't even recognize. Blaming her for things, telling her she is forgetting things..just to make her look crazy for his advantage. I can't say what happens but its one roller coaster ride worth taking to find out. Highly recommend this drama/mystery.

This had been a really gripping tale about a mad kind of love, the kind of madness that will bring you to the edge of your insanity. Mitchell and his twisted lies, his sick sense of love, his superior regards to himself and abominable attitude towards others.

I feel so bad for Ava, for feeling so much pain. She thought she found the man for her. Only to realize in the end that everything about Mitchell was a lie. She endured a lot of pain, she lost her own self-respect and even almost lost her sons. Ava deserved to rise from hell, but how could she even survive when almost everyone in town believed her ex-husband was the decent and truthful one?

I've experienced a chock-full of negative emotions while reading this book. I felt anger, fear, contempt, madness and rage, all towards one person - Mitchell Carson. I've never been so disgruntled in a character before, he's so despicable.

As for Ava, I felt desperation, agony, distress, misery and a cry for justice. Such a messy life to take! Imagine being accused of being incompetent, drunk and unmanageable.

Perhaps, the most painful emotion I felt was whenever I read little Jack's point of view. Eight-year old Jack who thought he was his own superhero, that everything he did was what Daredevil, Thor, Spiderman and even Wolverine would have done. The kids, Jack and baby Sam, were the ones affected greatly in this dysfunctional family and I couldn't help but shed a few tears for them.

Laura McNeill was able to deliver a story that will really tear you to pieces. She slowly drew me in to Jack's world, pulled me right into Ava's consciousness and delivered me away from Mitchell. Center of Gravity is a powerful story that will leave you hanging by a thread of hope and hoping for a sliver of truth. Truly an intense read!

4.5 rounded up! Wow, sometimes a great 1 just sneaks up on you! I was in a bit of a slump.. Even searching out 5 star reviews & popular authors just to try to improve my odds a bit. I was just having the worst luck! Then i stumble on this 1 at the library- & genuinely enjoyed every minute! The husband was truly awful.. But smart & unpredictable. & i really enjoyed Ava. It was refreshing to empathize with this woman who through absolutely no fault of her own, was just dealt a bad deck. But! She was resilient & strong.. & so realistic- it was just fun to root for her! The kids were funny & sweet, true individuals- their thoughts and behavior, were portrayed perfectly.
It is a thriller & i was" all in" from page 1. I kept sneaking in "just another 5 minutes.." I mean really, even the lawyers, cops, therapists, were excellent! Still now, i remember them each by name.
Actually, just after i was done with this book.. I picked up the 1 i had started after- & forgot for a second that i had finished this 1.. When i realized (or remembered) what i was reading was not this- i was so disappointed!😂 Really though, if you like psychological thrillers- even though this has somehow flown right under the radar- please give this 1 a try! What a pleasant surprise!!

What a creepy book! This incredibly fast-paced tale is difficult to put down, mostly because the reader gets invested in the characters and won’t want to stop until it all plays out. At first, Ava is frustrating because she’s too much of a doormat, too accommodating. As she gets more confidence, she becomes more likable.
Ava is married to handsome, successful Mitchell. His first wife died in an accident, so Ava has adopted his son Jack, whom she loves. The couple also has a 1-year-old named Sam. There are cracks in the marriage; Mitchell is too controlling, too obsessed with things being perfect. As Ava begins to see the flaws, Mitchell starts to turn on her, and things get frightening very quickly.

A special thank you to Thomas Nelson-Fiction and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Top 50 Books of 2015. "2015 Best Southern Domestic Psycho-Suspense."

Laura McNeill’s CENTER OF GRAVITY is an intense suspense domestic psychological thriller—a compelling exploration inside the walls of a Southern family, for a riveting page-turner, grabbing you from page one to the end!

Set in Mobile, Alabama it would appear from the exterior, Ava and Mitchell Carson’s marriage and family unit is picture perfect. However, behind closed doors— deceit, lies, and control; a devil in disguise, with charm, good looks, intelligence, and manipulation. Will Ava possess the tenacity and strength to protect her children, from a monster? Will the superhero loving, son Jack save the day before it is too late?

"Every day, somebody, somewhere, needs a hero."

Ava, a teacher meets a charming man who has recently lost his wife. She falls in love with his adorable eight-year old, son Jack, and they are soon married. She does not know much about her new husband’s past life, and does not ask a lot of questions, thinking he does not want a constant reminder of his past life. Ava adopts Jack, and soon thereafter she gets pregnant and they have a son, Sam who is now one.

Into the marriage, Mitchell, her husband, a successful man with money, looks, and charm, becomes controlling and demands she quit her job to stay home with the children. She was a teacher at the private school, where Jack attends.

Ava is a simple woman and does not need all the frills and material possessions, even driving an older jeep. However, Mitchell wants to continue buying, remodeling, and doing things to the house, to show the world he can take care of his family (true narcissistic behavior). His clothes, car, hair, and everything about him is for show and outward appearances. He is high stressed, short tempered, and spends no time with the children.

Ava is innocent, a little naïve at times and wonders if Mitchell is just stressed with work. She is trustworthy, and cannot comprehend her husband would stoop to such drastic measures. She is the only loving parent and soon finds Mitchell is not the man she thought she married. He does not even give her enough money to barely keep the house running-- another control tactic. “Sleeping with the Enemy” intensified, as now there are two children involved.

Mitchell is paranoid and extremely jealous. Cold and calculating. Ava has an old childhood friend (a cop), Mike, and Mitchell is even jealous of him. For no apparent reason, he decides to take the kids and move out. He makes Ava look bad and starts spreading lies. In the blink of an eye, he has temporary custody and Ava finds herself getting one hour a week supervised visitation with her own children. How could this have happened? Mitchell gets down and dirty - He has attorneys, the college, colleagues, judges, her old school friends, and even Ava’s own mother in his back pocket, with money to spin his story. Mitchell soon shows his true colors, and is not the man she thought she knew. How many people will he fool before other lives are in danger? Ava has to get her sons away from this mad man.

This guy is pure evil! Around every corner, he is conniving, setting up Ava to make her look like an unstable bad mother. He is verbally and emotionally abusive with the boys, and poor Jack is caught in the crossfire. (felt so sorry for the boys). Through messy restraining orders and custody battles, which are one sided, the court mandates a child psychologist, Dr. Lucy Bennett, and a mediator. Will Lucy be able to determine which one is the bad parent, in time to save the kids?

“When your children are stolen, the pain swallows you whole. Logic fades, reason retreats. Desperation. A charmed life falls to pieces. Destroyed. False promises. Lies. Emptiness.”

Soon Ava starts digging into Mitchell's past and gains the strength to fight for her children against all odds. Did he kill his first wife, the talented author of children’s books? Is she next? The more she learns, the more she fears for her children's safety. Why did Mitchell say his father was dead? What is he hiding behind this façade? Will Graham, Ava’s attorney be able to help her---before it is too late?

WOW! I was not anticipating the intensity and power of CENTER OF GRAVITY! Compelling and impressive. I happened to be packing preparing for a move, and another week of travel, and driving back to Florida from NC. This is the type of book, you want to read in one sitting, as very difficult to put down. My advice, "Do not start this book until you have the time, as it is so good." One to be read with no interruptions.

Laura McNeill's writing is pitch perfect; the pacing, character development, plot planning and a satisfying conclusion – excellent! My kind of book—possesses every ingredient for a "must read"--not a simple fluff drama marriage/divorce story.

CENTER OF GRAVITY, has depth---a psychological suspense, leaving you holding your breath, wondering what Mitchell will do next. It is so realistically shocking, knowing how many women have to face a man like this, when the legal system is not always there to protect the innocent, and everything is not as it appears.

Loved hearing from each well-developed character, flashing back and forth from each perspective (Graham, Ava, Mitchell, Lucy, Jack), getting an intimate view (especially Jack, the son). Ava grew so much from the beginning of the book, with newfound strength and confidence in herself and the fierce love of her boys, and her need to protect her family. Jack was adorable with his love of superheroes, and his younger brother, Sam --his need to protect those he loves. Mitchell is evil and mean, and Laura does an outstanding with the portrayal of this character-- his secret past, keeping you in chilling suspense. I loved Graham, the attorney, not the typical attorney, rough around the edges, his motorcycle, leaving you rooting for a happy ending.

“Everyone has a center of gravity. Every family too. It’s the tangible things that make us feel grounded and whole. And it’s different for everyone—a good job, a strong marriage, or a close friendship. Often when that center of gravity tilts with trouble or disappointment, everything becomes a little unstable. When you have a greater rift, like a divorce, it’s more like an earthquake. It takes time and work to achieve that equilibrium and peace again.”
What is normal?

CENTER OF GRAVITY is a chilling and haunting tale, yet uplifting novel of one mother’s love and a son’s determination. I fell in love with the book, and the author’s style (what a master storyteller)! She has been added to my favorite author list and fans of psychological suspense will devour this one! Highly recommend.

Upcoming Book SISTER DEAR OMG good! 5 Stars + Coming April 19, 2016. You need to move this one to the top of your reading list.

On a side note: The superhero part made me think of my youngest son, who just turned 40. About five years ago, his sister-in-law was planning a superhero birthday party for her son’s eighth birthday to include all his little guy friends. She hired a professional Spider-man for his party; however, he cancelled at the last minute. My son agrees to take his place (he is very athletic, and muscular), and rents a nice Spider-man professional costume (with even more muscles included). He evidently gets into the character, (he was also a superhero fan when he was younger). Highly creative, he wants to make a grand entrance--deciding to climb up a power pole and jump, then run across the back yard to the deck to make his appearance.

However, once he reached the top of the power pole, when he is jumping down, his mask slips over his eyes (had not planned for this minor technicality), blinding him, so he is unable to see the ground below to cushion his fall. He falls and breaks his leg. He still makes his appearance in pain, and winds up in the emergency room for the next seven hours, and an entire leg cast for months. Funny, as the local paper covered the story of the Spider-man superhero cited in the north Charlotte area, with his photo. Since he now has two children of his own (5 and 8), he has given up his superhero stunt performances.

This is a debut novel, believe it or not.
If this author writes her first book like this, so captivating, so powerful, so heart grippingly awesome, I just hope she lives up to this in her subsequent books as I will be following her around. I kid you not!

This is a Mothers nightmare.

There are five main characters in this read. Yes five. And each one tells a tale.

A picture perfect family is all that Ava ever wanted. She failed her mother. She could never live up to her expectations, so surely, she can this right, can't she?

This is one heck of a psychological thriller that will get you biting your nails, tapping your feet with frustration and pulling your hair out........

If this was made into a Movie, I would buy it, I would go and watch it. I would be sending my friends tickets to go see it or buying the DVD for presents. Yes, I loved it that much.

WOW wow WOW just WOW.

A family
A picture perfect family
Children
A home

All TORN apart.

CENTER OF GRAVITY tips the scales at 5 stars.

This heavy-weight domestic drama is a riveting and fast-paced tale of a marriage imploding and a custody battle that defies logic.

The author's well-drawn characters and compelling storyline make this book impossible to put down. Set in Mobile, Alabama, the author expertly uses the sights, sounds, and "flavor" of this eclectic Port City as a perfect atmospheric backdrop.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was superb.  Even though the narration was outstanding, the audio quality would have benefited from multiple narrators since the book was told from six POVs that were interwoven into the story's timeline.

This book was written in 2015 and somehow had escaped my radar.   Laura McNeill is a talented writer and I look forward to her future titles.

This one was so good -- I am literally blown away with how good this one is. The only thing I did not like?? That I couldn't read it fast enough to satisfy my own needs.

The plot was very well developed. Some of it was a little obvious, but it still was suspenseful and original. I thought there could have been more about the past and how it coincides with the present, but this didn't detract from the story itself.

I liked Ava and her children, especially Jack. I thought he was such a well developed character, although at times I had to remind myself that he was only 8 because he seemed to be written as older than that. One of the main things I found with this one was that it was a little difficult to differentiate between the different characters and their voices with the changing points of view, but it was minimal. Jack was still very well written and at times was your typical 8 year old child -- especially with his heroics at the beginning and the end. I liked that parallel.

Ava herself was probably the most interesting character. I really liked the way she stood up for herself and wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty and fight for her kids. I thought she was very clever and used her predicament to her advantage without letting Mitchell walk all over her. She was the definition of a strong female character. I can honestly say she is a female role model for me.

I would have liked more from Graham and his lawyer-ing skills. I thought there might have been a hint of romance between him and Ava, but I am glad nothing came from it at that point in time. I think he was a solid character, but I still would have liked more. I thought since he was introduced fairly early in the novel that he would have a larger role to play in the investigation; however, he still made his impact, especially by standing up for Ava at every opportunity he gets. It was also nice that he was just a side character and didn't come in to "save the day" in a sense because we got that badass scene at the end that I will forever treasure in my heart.

I have much to say about Mitchell, but I don't want to spoil anything so you'll have to read for yourselves!

Overall: 4/5 stars because it literally kept me turning pages. I could barely put it down once I started.

This book had potential. The alternating points of view seem to be a popular writing format these days and it worked fairly well with this book. However, Jack is supposed to be an 8 year old and I don't know any 8 year old that would act or talk like this child. He is definitely more like a 13 year old, and most times I just considered him in my mind as a 13 year old. I also grew weary of the superhero references...did the author miss any at all?? I also felt that the change in the husband was so abrupt. One day all is fine, the next day he is psycho. It felt like we were missing events that led up to this. Certainly he had to show his controlling ways far beyond the one chapter or two we were given before he moved out. There were too many left over pieces as to who he poisoned against Ava (the school, the college, the police) that were never resolved. The author would bring in people...such as Ava's mom...for short periods and then never go back and resolve that relationship. Too much going on and not flushed out or resolved. And, I never understood his motivation. The background....father in Army, mother committing suicide certainly didn't seem to justify his behavior, nor how he viewed Ava or his first wife. A very good premise with some emotionally gripping moments of psychological trauma, but the story was not well developed. And, I am thrown for a loop that this is supposedly Christian literature....um...definitely not. Perhaps it was tamer than most abuse books, but there was definitely not a Christian element in this book, if that is what you are looking for (I didn't pick it up for that reason, nor did I know until afterwards when I started reading the reviews that it was by a Christian publisher).

Center of Gravity is a riveting suspense thriller that easily draws the reader into Ava and Carson Mitchell's disintegrating family dynamic when jealousy, suspicions of adultery, rage, and dark secrets from the past come to the surface.

In her debut novel, author Laura McNeill weaves a compelling and powerful tale that takes the reader on one hell of a thrilling roller coaster ride as Ava and Carson's chilling story unfolds. Told in the alternating perspectives of five main characters, the reader can't help but get caught up in the drama, tension, suspense, and intriguing twists and turns, as the once picture perfect Mitchell family disintegrates into a haunting tale that makes the reader pause and wonder just how well you really know a person. I really enjoyed getting a glimpse into each of the main characters' minds with their alternating perspectives, the storyline flows smoothly from one perspective to the next, intertwining them into one heck of gripping tale that is simply stunning.

If you want a fast paced realistic psychological thriller that pulls out all the stops and keeps you captivated until the surprising explosive conclusion, then Center of Gravity is a must read! I could easily see this novel as a Lifetime Channel movie, it is one of those rare riveting stories that will stay with the reader for a long time.

What happens when everything you know and believe in falls apart all around you. That's what happens to Ava. She thought she had a perfect life with her husband and sons. However her husband starts showing his true colours and shatters Ava's life. Ava knows she needs to step up and fight for her boys and her sanity. I didn't like Ava straight away. I really wanted her to have more backbone. However she changed my mind as I kept reading. Her husband Mitchell is horrid. When he showed his true colours I despised him.

I found this to be a fast paced addictive read. This is one of them books that once you start you just gotta keep reading until the end.

If your looking for a well written psychological thriller then I highly recommend you 1-click. Loved it.

I FINALLY got to read this book on my last vacation of the summer! It's been on my TBR forever. The plot is chilling, the characters are relatable and I couldn't stop turning pages. A realistic portrayal and life with a sociopath. Well done! Loved it!

Center of Gravity
by
Laura McNeill

(Thomas Nelson [registered trademark of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, Inc] 2015)

Two verses in the Bible come to mind when I read Center of Gravity.

Philippians 4:8
"Finally brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy meditate on these things."

Colossians 2:18
"Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind."

I'm not going to say that this book is good. Despite the flawed point of view of an eight year old or the lack of distinction between the characters' voices, the story is actually promising. BUT it is not a Christian book. It is NOT a clean book nor clean read. IT IS NOT an acceptable read.

I expect more from a Christian fiction book published by a large, well known Christian publishing house. To me, Thomas Nelson has foregone the Gospel and Jesus in exchange for the mighty dollar.

The library, where I reserved a copy, doesn't label this as Christian. The book scan (UPC) on the back doesn't even label it as Christian, but for it to be published under Thomas Nelson, many Christians are hoodwinked into believing that this book is a Christian book.

Below is a list of what this book contains that is expressly against our Christian faith:
I will start with the words first...
P--- (out of context. Use in the place of angry not urine):
p. 22, p. 258 (once said by the eight year old in the story)
D----t:
p.32, p.279, p.291, p.300
A-- (out of context, meaning butt, not donkey):
p.44, p.65, p.110
H--- (out of context, used as a curse or oath, not as in a place, i.e. eternal hell):
p.46, p.165 (x2), p.216, p.291, p.295
D---:
p. 47, p.49, p.132, p.146, p.164, p.189, p.204, p.205, p.215, p.216, p.264, p.273, p.276, p.297
A---hole:
p.63
Smarta--:
p.64
B----d (out of context, used as a curse/oath/derogatory name, not as an illegitimate offspring):
p.95, p.104, p.105
Harda--:
p.108
D----d (out of context, not as a condemning nature of sin, but as an oath/curse):
p.200, p.277

There are also scenes which a Christian and the Christian market will find unacceptable.
One scene of sex that is borderline soft porn in description.
p.32
Homosexuality is written in a way that condones this sin. This not considered acceptable in the Christian market.
p.264

Only one religious reference other than taking the Lord's/God's name in vain (3 instances):
Excerpt from Center of Gravity:
"...I send up a silent prayer. To the angels, to the heavens, to all that is good and true in the universe."

This is NOT Christianity. As Christians we are forbidden to pray to angels, the heavens, or to the universe. Our prayers are to God/Jesus alone.

As I mentioned above, Thomas Nelson is a leading publisher in Christian fiction. If it has the Thomas Nelson name and trademark, readers assume that the book is a Christian book. Now as readers we must be wary of these wolves in sheep's clothing. Check the book out thoroughly, read reviews, use the library before spending hard earned money on a book that will pollute the mind.

Thomas Nelson should be ashamed to have such a book associated with their name.

Review: CENTER OF GRAVITY by Laura McNeill

A woman who married for love and whose entire world revolves around her one-year-old son and her adored adopted eight-year-old stepson discovers her world destroyed when her Type A husband reveals himself as someone she can't recognize. After her husband Mitchell, a college V. P., forged her resignation letter, Ava settled into life as a stay-at-home mother, building a richly hued domestic life despite the stringent budgeting imposed by her husband. But when his campaign of falsifying and slander commences, trashing her reputation, and he us granted custody of the two.boys he doesn't love, Ava must fight back, or be utterly destroyed in the process. An outstanding literary novel with perfectly realized characters, CENTER OF GRAVITY will rend reader's heartstrings.

I will start with the positive. Great plot! It could be a movie. The negative: the movie would be better than the book. It was hard for me to finish this book. I almost gave up but decided to skip a few chapters and read the last few. It was too slow and I didn't love the characters. But I could see the idea of them being played out on the screen, skipping some of the less needed details. The author did a good job of making the reader feel the injustice of the situation and the disgust for Mitchell. But there were too many details in the writing that were just irrelevant and WAY too many similes. It almost became comical when I would read yet another simile.

This is such a gripping, edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller that is so good you will not want to put it down once you start reading. Liked the point of view format of the main characters in the book, even the creepy and evil Mitchell. Excellent writing by Laura McNeill. I highly recommend Center of Gravity!

3.5. Extremely fast paced over the month of a crumbling marriage. You knew who you were rooting for but didn’t really feel surprised at the story or outcome.

4.5 Stars - It was memorable

"Center of Gravity" is the poignant and suspenseful tale from Laura McNeill.

The novel starts with very emotional scene as a distraught mother, Ava, is trying to get to her children who have been taken away from her. The narration is particularly strong as it is told in the first person, from Ava's point of view, in the present tense.

The storyline then shifts one month earlier, and this time our narrator is Jack, Ava's adopted son (see our teaser excerpt). Laura McNeill unfolds Ava's story for us from the points of view of the characters who are involved (Ava, her husband Mitchell, their son Jack, attorney Graham and social worker Lucy ...). All in the first person, present tense narration. The timeline of the narrative picks up from where the last character left off and there do not seem to be any overlaps or sudden time lapses.

Center of Gravity is a compelling and gripping read, with a sense of anticipation and unravelling that builds to a crescendo, as truths come to light and the story reaches its climax. Laura McNeill's writing is flawless, her characters are beautifully and powerfully developed, and the events described are painfully realistic, with all of the emotions associated with them, and we experience them first hand from the point of view of each protagonist. My only criticism is that I felt that Graham was not explored as fully as I would have liked, and at one point he just seemed to disappear.

Mitchell is the pivotal character in this story, as his behaviour and manipulative actions have a deep effect on everyone around him. Is Mitchell just a monster or is there more to it? You will have to find out for yourselves - the answers are there, and again the author excelled in her presentation of this character and his motivations. I just feel that she described perfectly something a little bit different to what is referred to in the book, but I am truly splitting hairs.

I really cannot say any more without giving spoilers away. Before you pick up this book be aware that it is a very strong and emotionally draining read, you will feel what the characters feel. This is a fast read, but not a light one. Make sure you have a few hours on your hands as you will not want to put this down.

What a thrill ride!! Full review to come!

Merged review:

About the Book

The truth could cost her everything.

Her whole life, Ava Carson has been sure of one thing: she doesn’t measure up to her mother’s expectations. So when Mitchell Carson sweeps into her life with his adorable son, the ready-made family seems like a dream come true. In the blink of an eye, she’s married, has a new baby, and life is grand.

Or is it?

When her picture-perfect marriage begins unraveling at the seams, Ava convinces herself she can fix it. It's temporary.

Fueled by fierce love for her children and aided by Graham Thomas, a new attorney in town —Ava takes matters into her own hands, digging deep into the past. But will finding the truth be enough to beat Mitchell at his own game? Center of Gravity weaves a chilling tale, revealing the unfailing and dangerous truth that things—and people—are not always what they seem.

My Review

Center of Gravity by Laura McNeill

July 14, 2015

Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Contemporary

Rating: 5 stars!

I have two words for Center of Gravity and they are...WOAH BABY!!! (And if you got that reference, then I love you!) Center of Gravity is Laura McNeill's debut novel and what a debut novel it was. It is the story of Ava Carson who is feeling the pressure to say I do and so when she meets Mitchell and his son she believes it's fate. Though soon enough Mitchell becomes very controlling and eventually files for divorce. Mitchell also takes the kids. Center of Gravity is a story that teaches us that not everything is at it seems.

This was one heck of a thrill ride of a novel. Ava Carson is such a relatable character, flaws and all. And guys, you can't help but hate Mitchell. The prose is one of the many things that kept me reading. The writing was just phenomenal.

What would you do if you thought you had the perfect life? Two beautiful boys and a loving husband. Then your world was turned upside down. That is what happened to Ava when her husband walks out and then tricks her into letting him take the boys.

Ava had no idea what was happening. Mitchell went from being a loving attentive husband to a total stranger. He had filed for a divorce and custody of their two boys before he walked out on her. She had no idea what to do or where to turn. Her mother was never there and she knew would never be. She had to take matters into her own hands.

Trying to talk to Mitchell only made things worse. All she wanted was her life back. Her husband and children. When she finally realized that was not going to happen she hired a new lawyer in town, Graham Thomas, to help her. Together they do everything by the book. She had no idea what Mitchell was capable of. What he would stoop to to discredit her and make it look like she was an unfit mother wife and person.

Through it all she never gave up. She fought for her children even when it seemed like nothing she did would help. She uncovered dark secrets and lies that Mitchell had been hiding through their marriage.

A mother's love is strong and Ava loved her boys more that life itself. She will not give up until she has her boys back in their home where they will be happy and well taken care of.

She fights to almost the death for Jack and Sam. Jack was Mitchell's son from his first marriage. Karen was killed in a car wreck and when Ava married Mitchell she adopted Jack as her own son and loved him as much as any mother would love their child.

This book will keep you turning pages to see what will happen next. You hear from Ava, Mitchell, Jack, Graham and the court appointed therapist who learns a lot about both Ava and Mitchell. I felt like I was right there with Ava and could feel her pain and Jack's pain and fears too.

This is one of the best books I've read by Laura McNeill and loved it from start to finish. It's a wonderful story of love, loss, tears and even super heroes. One you won't be able to put down or forget long after you have read the last word.

Having put her career as a school counsellor on hold to embrace a new marriage, new step-son, and a new baby, Ava couldn't be happier. Her husband Mitchell is a good provider, her stepson Jack keeps her on her toes with his frequent misadventures carrying out his superhero ambitions, and her son Sam loves nothing better than to remind her she's loved and needed. But when a hidden dark side of Mitchell emerges, Ava isn't prepared for the war he is about to unleash. As Ava loses custody of the children and finds that Mitchell has turned even her friends against her, she must find the strength to fight for the truth...and her very life.

"Center of Gravity" is one of those books that I picked up because the plot intrigued me, but I wasn't sure entirely what to expect as Laura McNeil is an unknown author to me. But let me tell you that this is one wild ride! If I was prone to biting my nails, I'm pretty sure I would have lost them all in the course of reading this book. As more and more of Mitchell's dark side arises and Ava's seemingly perfect life falls utterly apart around her, you can't help but feel her depth of despair. But this isn't one of those books that gets bogged down in emotion. Rather, the plot races along and I found myself captivated by Ava's struggle, and also that of Jack, who emerges as one of the true heroes in this story. Now, a word of caution is in order. There was some mild profanity in this novel, which I was a bit surprised by coming from a publisher like Thomas Nelson. Though I can enjoy a book without being offended by such things, I didn't feel it added to the book and hope it doesn't stop people from adding this author to their "must-read" list.

Center of Gravity is very well-written, and will entertain you, grab hold of your emotions, and leave you both drained and filled with hope after reaching the conclusion of the story. I award this book a very solid 4.5 out of 5 stars, and look forward to what is next to come from Laura McNeil!
