This book was surprisingly very practical. I think it will be one I return to as a resource through the high school years. I was expecting a little more of a philosophical and relational defense of homeschooling through the teen years, but this book is more of a “how to guide.” the pros and cons of SAT vs ACT, concurrent enrollment, etc. There wasn’t anything about parenting teens as you are homeschooling them. I think a good companion book to this would be the one I feel I need more in this moment, and that is Paul Tripp’s “Age of Opportunity.”
Are you a homeschooling parent struggling with the idea of teaching a high schooler? If so, this book is for you! Rachel Kovak writes in her typically gentle and encouraging manner. She acknowledges the trepidation that can come with educating teens but reassures cautious parents that it can be done—and done well!
I’ve followed Rachel on Instagram for years, and more recently on Substack. I appreciate her views on homeschooling and parenting; she is a woman who exudes joy and love. As I approach the teen years, I’ve often wondered whether it would be possible to continue the beautiful home-learning style we’ve honed over the years. After reading this book, I feel heartened about homeschooling through the teen years. I’m encouraged that my children can graduate from home learning with both the rich education I desire and the knowledge that colleges require. I appreciated the appendix full of potential job ideas. I plan on encouraging my sons to read through that list that they might find potential career ideas.
I have one caveat and that would be that the author is writing to an American audience. As a Canadian there’s a fair amount of information that wouldn’t apply to teenagers looking to attend school in Canada. I think there is still a lot of good advice to take from this book but make sure to check for Canadian requirements if you desire to attend a Canadian college or university.
I look forward to sharing this book with other homeschooling parents!
Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
This is a wonderful resource for the high-school years. And beyond.
Rachel shows you what to look out for whether your child is going to work in trades or go to college. How to prep for that and how to write a transcript, other tips and other useful things like applying to college information. It is an excellent How-To Guide. I did appreciate how she was regularly bringing you back to why you are doing this with philosophical/inspirational quotes; as someone who does not like tests, I felt a little glazed over in some parts. However, when I need it, I can go back to it and it will be a very helpful guide. I appreciate her list of 250 jobs that don't require a college degree, a lot were jobs I never considered, and other opportunities our children can be working on, similiar to what Ben Sasse has talked about before that are outside the box of academics that children can be working on and building as they grow into adults. Overall, I think this is a good read for the mom that needs inspiration and motivation for working on these things early instead of later with her child(ren).
Rachel’s book has been such a blessing to our family. Since joining our co-op, our little one, Reuben, has blossomed. He proudly calls it his “new Park school,” and we’ve seen such joy and confidence in him since embracing a more relaxed, freedom-based approach to learning. I used to worry that being affectionate or supportive might hold him back—people even told me I was “spoiling him.” But through Rachel’s guidance, we learned that freedom, love, and trust bring out the best in our children. Even though her book isn’t specifically written for families just starting with toddlers, it completely transformed our world because it took the fear of false ideas like: when math gets more difficult, I won’t be able to help him so he will have to go to the regular school. Thank you, Rachel, for your wisdom and warmth. May God bless your words, your book, and your family as richly as you’ve blessed ours. This book has gold nuggets of wisdom!!!!! I hope they make this book in Spanish soon so I can share with my Hispanic friends
This book is an incredible handbook for those looking for advice for homeschooling high schoolers. It gives ideas for outsourcing difficult subjects, busts myths, shares practical tips like writing transcripts and conquering college applications, and provides encouragement to moms and dads choosing this path. Rachel is the wise mentor we’ve all been looking for! It’s not only great for those with kids choosing traditional paths, as it also speaks to those who may choose the military or paths that don’t require college. She discusses homeschooling for a growth mindset and creating relationships with our children and connecting them with other adults. So grateful for this resource that considered so many angles.
This is hands down the best book I have ever read on homeschooling. While written about homeschooling in high school, it is inspiring and encouraging for homeschooling as a whole. It is full of information, ideas, resources, stories, and encouragement, and is written so beautifully, it’s like a poetic love letter to the homeschooling parent. I found myself feeling more inspired, more ready, more excited about homeschooling my teens than I’ve been in so long- and I’ve been homeschooling for 19 years. I’m so so grateful that Rachel Kovac wrote this book. I will never stop recommending it.
This is a good guide for preparing homeschoolers for college entry. It is not a guide for general preparation for life beyond education. The two are complex and intertwined, but I am still on the hunt for a holistic view of launching teens into adulthood and their *shining future.* University is assumed here, and a ‘non-traditional’ (non-university) path was mentioned (one line at the end of a chapter, and then a couple of paragraphs in an appendix).
A much-needed book for every homeschool family out there! This book will guide you through the teenage homeschool years. It is filled with practical information, encouragement, insight, and more ideas than you could imagine to make there years the best they can be. Grab a copy for yourself and for your friends!
