Hello to all feel-good book lovers! This book is from Korea. We just adore those cozy East Asian feel-good books with cats, don't we? There’s almost always a small shop at the center. You might remember that earlier this year, as part of the "Ceviz's Picks" event, we organized a themed challenge around books featuring little shops. This book also centers around a shop: a pharmacy.
Before diving into the story, I must say how much I loved the physical edition. The cover concept is delightful, and featuring a cat makes it even more special for me. The way the windows glisten subtly in the light is another huge plus.
Now, let me tell you a bit about the plot. Imagine a pharmacy that opens only after the sun goes down and keeps its lights on until morning—not because it’s on duty, but simply because the owner, Boho, chooses to run it that way. It stems from a promise Boho made in the past, reinforced by the belief that while plenty of people can help during the day, nighttime leaves people on their own. A deeply traumatic past event, realized only when it was too late by morning, left Boho hardened and weighed down by profound grief.
As Boho confronts the past, the pharmacy becomes a haven for customers of all ages and walks of life. Willingly or not, Boho sparks lasting bonds with them: a rookie cop assigned to pose as an apprentice while investigating a local crime ring, whom Boho eventually realizes holds the key to the biggest mystery in his life; an insomniac actress and an ambitious yet exhausted assistant director filming in the neighborhood; an injured youth; the elderly owner of a local market; a bar hostess; and several other distinct characters.
Though seemingly unrelated at first glance, a shared emotion connects them all: a desire to be understood and healed. Boho is remarkably skilled at this. Rather than simply selling whatever medicine a customer asks for, he understands what they truly need and helps them realize it too. At times, though, Boho can be quite stern. None of these characters are flawless—they make mistakes, take wrong turns, and face the consequences. Boho’s determination to hold onto life despite everything was especially moving. The language is simple and fluid.
In recent years, we’ve seen an influx of similar "feel-good" novels across Korean and Japanese literature. These stories aren't about grand miracles; they focus on small kindnesses, coincidences, and the power of human connection. Sometimes a brief conversation, a cup of tea, or a few words from a stranger can leave a far deeper mark than expected.
Naturally, this genre might not resonate with everyone. Some may find it too quiet or naive. But if you want to unwind with a comforting read after a long, exhausting day, it’s a wonderful choice. What sets this book apart is that it grapples with emotions that feel genuinely close to home. In many East Asian books, particularly Japanese novels, characters often live in such peaceful environments that their struggles revolve around minor grievances and small reactions. In this book, however, some of the pain cuts much deeper.
Do you enjoy these feel-good novels from Korean and Japanese literature, or do you prefer fast-paced, high-tempo stories?
