Gregory Betts's collection Boycott is a work of plunderverse poetry. In this collection, Betts experiments with taking comments from (what I believe are) online travel forums in order to communicate global issues and frustrations but most of all, advocating (or critiquing) different types of boycott campaigns around the world.
The experimental effort is very well done, leaving the reader feeling almost isolated after reading the many comments advising one not to visit/buy from (insert province, country, territory, state etc. here). For me, Boycott captures contemporary international frustrations towards globalization, outsourcing economies, corrupt governments and corporations, and the dangers of LGBT persons traveling (to name a few). This of course, all being done brilliantly by the voices of hundreds of anonymous people on the Internet.
Admittedly towards the end of the collection readers may feel exhausted by the barrage of information and geo-political strife... However, I feel that this is an important read and I love the experimental aspect of plunderverse and all its limitations and possibilities for poets, audiences/readers, and for the people unknowingly speaking through the poet (and interestingly who the speaker is speaking through as well).
Overall, Boycott is excellent! Recommended for anyone trying out plunderverse for the first time or looking for some experimental poetry.
