May and Dove have shared a best friend for over ten years, but that’s always been the extent of their connection. Dove has grown to despise May, while May has fallen in love with Dove despite her better judgment and against all odds.
When unlikely circumstances lead to a magical and heated one night stand, they end up with a surprise that will connect them for life. A surprise pregnancy.
They’re forced to coexist, confront their past, and inevitably determine whether they’ll make a real relationship work or let history stand in their way of their happily ever after.
Edit: What the heck, I’m changing my rating from 3 stars to 4. This novel was really on the line for me, and I kept going back and forth. Ill lean into embracing the spicy and the sweetness and the fact that this is a first novel from an author I would truly like to encourage. ----------------------------------------- SO FLUFFY
I had some mixed feelings about this novel and I am very unhappy about that fact. This is because I enjoyed this novel a lot and want to rate it higher than I feel like I unfortunately need to. This novel was fun, it was very steamy, and also a delightful and heartwarming hug. The relationship between the protagonists, which is obviously the main point of the novel, was delightful and I enjoyed coming along on their journey. These two were very sweet, although also infuriating at times when they failed to communicate. I felt like this was a sexy-Hallmark movie, which is a very positive thing for me to say.
I loved how not only was this book super sexy, but the spicy scenes were used to convey a lot of plot and emotion as well. They definitely were not spicy scenes that “could be skipped without it mattering” and that’s how I like it.
The Omegaverse aspect was used incredibly well. This genre puts a lot of unique tools in an author’s toolkit, and this one used them creatively and very well. I love the extra layer of communication through pheromones, and I thought the psychic link between bonded couples was neat too (haven’t seen that before). All in all I just think that this was an asset to the Omegaverse world.
The downsides though. This novel fell down a fair bit (in my opinion) on the worldbuilding and greater plotline. We are given glimpses into the wider world outside of these two characters, but it doesn’t truly go anywhere. The little bit of plot that is happening is very underdeveloped, the conflict is only vaguely described, and the resolution seemed underwhelming and fairly random. I think this novel would have been better if it had either eliminated the political/kingdom plotline or significantly expanded upon it. I was excited to see a world map at the start of the book, but upon reading it I honestly don’t think it was needed as almost none of the locations featured into the story, which barely left the castle. The rest of the story, including their romance and friendships with other characters, was a little underdeveloped but not too bad; I spent a lot of the time thinking that there was a lot going on that I (the reader) wasn’t aware of.
To be clear, I like this author. I will absolutely be looking forward to seeing what they write next and I will be happy if I get to see more of this world. As a first novel, I would say they did a great job and I hope that they keep writing!
Thank you to the author for the free ARC. This honest review was left voluntarily.
It's the first ov book I've read and considering I finished it in one day I don't think it will be the last.
The ratio between spice and sweetness is top notch, I only expected a little more slow burn at the beginning instead of the instalust but that is a me thing. Even if the book is ”short” - about 150 pages - each character has its own backstory and its brevity can only be seen in the scarcity of the backgrounds' descriptions e.g. the castle and the market square , we only know that the whole setting has medieval vibes.
The thing that won me over was how kind, caring and protective May is – I don't know if that's the case in all the ov but I love a MC like that- and don't get me started with all the sweet physical tuches.
This is the heart-warming book par excellence !
And now a small list of things you'll find - you'll have to read it to find more 😉: - accidental pregnancy - forced proximity - found family - one night stand to forever - HEA - x2 pov - lesbian MCs - "Good girl" - all female & queer cast
Over all it's 4⭐ and 3.5🔥
TW: Mention of killing someone - pregnant woman being hurt during an attack - mention of erbs used to avoid conception (not taken by the MC)
First off, huge thanks to the author for letting me be an ARC reader in exchange for my honest review!
The Accidental Alpha instantly caught my attention — mostly because there just aren’t that many sapphic omegaverse books out there that are officially published (most live in fanfic land), so I was really curious to see how this one would play out.
When it comes to the characters, we've got Dove, who works closely with the royal family, and May, the captain of the royal guard. At first glance, the only thing they seem to share is their mutual best friend… or so it appears.
From the start, things heat up between May and Dove a little too quickly for my taste. We barely get to know them on a personal level before they jump into a night of passion, going from strangers to lovers almost instantly. The insta-love/lust vibe was strong, and I personally would’ve liked to know more of their backstory. Early on, Dove seems to dislike May for no real reason, which felt like a missed chance to build a bridge between them to genuinely connect with one another instead of going straight to the bedroom. That being said… the smut? Yeah, no complaints there. 🔥
What really left me wanting, though, was the world-building. With the medieval vibes, there was so much room to make the setting more immersive. Instead, the plot mostly circled around the romance, with not much else going on outside their happily-ever-after journey... which is a shame, because the world itself had the bones to be something truly captivating.
All things considered, for a debut novel, it’s not bad at all. The elements are there, and if RJ builds on them in future stories—especially leaning into all the juicy omegaverse possibilities, I think we could get something truly amazing next time.
5 stars. This book has my name written all over it. Sapphic Omegaverse with a surprise pregnancy and a soft Alpha? I couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect book for me and I need to inject it directly into my veins. I adored this. Was there some things I had issue with writing wise? Absolutely, the dialogue felt a bit stilted and clunky at times but dammit I do not care. May and Dove and their romance had me so hooked that I willingly overlooked all of that.
This was absolutely precious. May and Dove hook up at the beginning due to Dove’s heat. May has been in love with Dove for years while Dove has been hostile towards her and it was so good. That first sex scene was so hectic and hot and I really enjoyed it. May’s Alpha is very take charge which is a change to how she is any other time which fascinated me. The two go their separate ways after Dove’s heat and oops, Dove finds out she’s pregnant and May finds out from someone else. Double oops. I loved it. So many hurt feelings and May feeling unworthy and unsure but also being there for Dove and their unborn pup. It was so sweet. This was a very soft read and that epilogue was absolutely adorable. I hope Berryhill plans on writing more in this world because I need more. Into the Comfort Reads folder this goes.
If I had to sum up The Accidental Alpha in one phrase, it would be a sexy, sapphic Hallmark movie with fangs and feelings. This novel was fun, steamy, and surprisingly tender—the kind of story that wraps you in a warm hug while also making you fan yourself every few chapters.
May and Dove are the definition of “it’s complicated.” They’ve shared a best friend for over a decade but never quite managed to share anything else without sparks (or claws) flying. May’s hopeless crush and Dove’s deep-seated resentment make for a deliciously angsty setup, and when fate (and a little bit of magic) throws them into a one-night stand that leads to an unexpected pregnancy, things get real very quickly. What follows is a messy, heartfelt, and often hilarious journey of two people who have to learn how to coexist, forgive, and maybe—just maybe—love each other for real.
I adored the emotional beats of this story. The relationship between May and Dove was both delightful and infuriating—just how I like my romance. Their communication (or lack thereof) made me want to yell at them, but also root for them all the way through. The chemistry? superb. And what I especially loved was how RJ Berryhill used the spicy scenes to drive the emotional arc forward. These weren’t just filler moments—they revealed vulnerability, history, and heart. You couldn’t skip them, and honestly, why would you want to?
Omegaverse is such a niche and complex genre to take on—especially for a debut—and it’s clear that RJ Berryhill is both a fan and a student of it. You can tell they’ve read some of the greats, including Lily X, because the emotional depth and intensity of the dynamics really shine through. Choosing to debut with omegaverse is a bold move, and it pays off in the chemistry and intimacy between the leads. That said, with a genre this layered, worldbuilding becomes especially vital so readers can fully grasp the social structures, hierarchies, and stakes that make the world feel lived-in.
With just a bit more attention to that worldbuilding, I think the story could have felt even more balanced—bringing the broader setting to life in a way that complements the emotional core so beautifully. The story hints at a fascinating wider kingdom full of politics, magic, and supernatural hierarchy—elements that feel rich with potential—but they never quite take center stage the way I hoped they might. We get little glimpses of that larger world, and they’re intriguing enough to make me want more. I think with a bit more development, those threads could add even greater depth and texture to an already charming romance. As a debut, though, it’s clear Berryhill has built something full of promise, and I’d love to see future books explore this world more fully.
Still, for a debut? RJ Berryhill has done something really special here. The writing is confident, the emotional beats are strong, and the romance shines bright. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for whatever they write next—and I’d be more than happy to return to this world (especially if Dove and May make a cameo).
A warm, spicy, and heart-tugging debut that reads like “Enemies with Benefits: The Fairytale Edition.” If you love your sapphic romance with a mix of heat, humor, and heart, The Accidental Alpha is absolutely worth the read.
I was chosen to be and arc reader and this is my review. Like always i consider it a honor when I get to be part of and arc reading. Thanks to the author for the trust and this beautiful book.
I like it a lot. The main characters are very well written. It has a good relationship development after that first “encounter” which is what the book is about. May and Dove’s relationship is beautiful and how they are together. May is a devoted alpha to Dove and treats her so well. Oh And the things they say to each other; Both romantic and sexual.
If you like Omegaverse, forced proximity, and Alpha that is madly in love and and will do anything for the stubborn omega who is also in love with this alpha. You will definitely enjoy this one.
It has a lot of fluff, wholesome moments and a decent amount of spice.
We need more ov! Thank you to this author for adding to the collection!
This was a fairly quick read with a nice mix of sweet, spice and plot.
Sharing a best friend in the Queen, May, the Queen’s Captain and Dove, part of the kitchen staff have been at odds for many years. May is secretly in love with Dove but doesn’t feel like she measures up as an alpha especially for Dove. Dove meanwhile has some strong feelings but feels like May is a player. Dove goes into heat (she’s an omega) and May is there to help…protect her. Some miscommunication ensues until they are both forced to confront the other. Will they share their true feelings? Can they move beyond misconceptions?
Accidental Alpha is the debut novel by RJ Berryhill in the scarce f/f Omegaverse genre. I read this little gem in one day and I really enjoyed it.
May and Dove have two very different feelings toward one another, most notably Dove’s strong dislike for May, but a special circumstance brings them together for the foreseeable future. May and Dove realize they are going to need one another more than ever.
Let’s talk characters, yeah? I loved May, I thought she was sweet and kind, while also being strong and loyal. Throughout I just wanted to hug her, she struggled with insecurity and self worth and I found myself wanting to scream that she is so so worthy. Dove on the other hand is a sassy, stubborn girl and I wanted to scream at her too, but to come to her senses and see what she had in front of her. By the end, I wanted to hug them both and tell them how much I loved them.
Pros for me about AA: the spice. Holy hell, the SPICE. I don’t recommend reading in public, but if you do good for you 😉 I give this book 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ on my spicy scale. Def hit the mark for me there. Another pro, the characters May and Dove. I grew to love them despite their issues at first and I only wanted them to win. Lastly, I thought the length was good. It wasn’t too long and it didn’t feel rushed or like it dragged on.
May and Dove share a best friend and we get to see her a bit in the book, at times I felt like I was missing something between them and I would’ve liked to learn more about their friendships.
Overall, I recommend this book and I really enjoyed reading it. It gives me a series vibes so I’m putting it out in the world that I want MORE! Thank you to RJ, our author for allowing me an ARC for my honest feedback.
3.6 ⭐️ This was such a cute omegaverse romance but it does need some more attention to editing.
First of all would I rec this? Yes, yes I would. If you like sapphic omegaverse you probably know how hard it is to find works, and this was an enjoyable story with lovable characters. The world was a lot of fun and I did enjoy the political/monarchy story in the background.
Saying that there were many errors and some were glaring ones (even down to random letters on the end of words.) So if that bothers you this might not be the book for you, but personally I’m not too fussed by issues as long as I enjoy the story. Usually I do leave some leeway if I know a book is indie published but even considering that there are many errors the author should have taken out that aren’t small so I do think it needs another few rounds of edits.
Regardless of that, I really found myself gripped by this and did not put the book down. I read it in a day, up at 3am glued to my screen.
Rep// sapphic MC (29), sapphic MC, sapphic SC, BIPOC sapphic SC. Central romance is sapphic / WLW with omegaverse tropes.
TWs listed below, please skip if you don’t want vague spoilers.
TW// sex on page, unexpected pregnancy, heat pains, death, vomiting/sickness, injury while pregnant.
The Accidental Alpha is cute and sweeter than I expected, it was a quick one day read.
I would have liked to know a bit more about why Dove felt the way she did about May at the beginning, if it was just misplaced feelings. We get a bit of insight into the world they live in but I wanted to know more, more about the politics and the reasons for the uprising in the townsfolk, more so than it just being about more taxes.
I enjoyed that consent was an important and present for the smut scenes, and that the scenes were filled with feelings not just spice for the sake of it. May being an alpha who yearned so much for Dove and Dove being an omega who didn’t let anyone around her choose for her was refreshing for me. That dynamic should be more present in the omegaverse. I liked that nearing the end, despite having insecurities about being a leader, May was able to talk to the townsfolk and explain what the purpose of the taxes was, however I do feel like it was too quick and simple a solution for a complicated problem that had been building up the entire book.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. I’m looking forward to their next works.

I enjoyed every page of this book and it was a pleasure getting to be an ARC reader. The book immediately starts very bold and is a 4.5/5 with its spice. There are multiple spice scenes throughout this book and they are written very beautifully. But, there is also a lot of tame and domestic life in this book and its very calming and written with the same care as the spice scenes. Every chapter, whether it is spicy or tame it still shows the love that these 2 characters have for each other.
This book isn't very long, but every page in this book is used to its maximum potential and it continues to tell its story. If you're a new reader to the OV then you will find that the first 3 chapters immediately gives you key words from the universe and establishes the roles of betas, omegas, and alphas very well. I have read this book twice and I had genuine fun going through every page. My personal favorite chapter was the Epilogue because it expresses their loving relationship and also it still leaves questions for the future of these characters.
The characters are beautifully written and have very different personalities from each other. May was my favorite character and is an alpha, but she is very emotional and very much in love with Dove. May is a very loving person, but also passionate with her love. She's shown to be careful, dominant, but also willing to sacrifice everything for her love. Dove is very stubborn throughout the book, but that stubbornness is written in a way that readers can relate to. She is a very strong and independent character from the very start to the ending.
I have gotten to speak with RJ Berryhill and I can tell that there was a lot of passion put into this book and it definitely translates into the passion these characters have for each other. There are 3 relationships in this book and each relationship is unique and they show their love for each other in different ways, which is written beautifully. The way they show their love is what makes the character vastly unique and it leads to a variety of dialogue, actions, and more. Every chapter had the same bold passion and the only thing written better than the chapters were the characters themselves.
I only wish this book was longer because I enjoyed every moment I had with these characters and I wished that I could spend more with them. I highly recommend this book!
This was new and different for me. It also was an eye-opener for me. People and worlds that I didn’t know existed in stories. Though I don’t think I would read in this genre again, I am pleased that I tried this. It was well written and the main characters were nice people. So 3 stars
i don’t know why her full name was dovely… that just bothered me so much. and enemies to lovers except they almost immediately fall in love with each other. i need the yearning and back and forth before they get together :(
I was definitely thrown off by the immediate spice right at the beginning. Don’t get me wrong, I love smut but at the time I wasn’t in the mood for it.
My rating went up though because I fell in love with the characters and their story! Finding out more about their backgrounds and them as people is what hooked me and prompted me to keep on reading!
I do wish we got more of May and Dove with Hadley but that’s okay! I still loved the story

I was allowed to be an ARC reader for this debut novel, and I really loved it.
Dove and May have been friends for a long time. Dove is the queen's best friend, and May the captain of the queen’s army, and also the queen’s beloved friend. May has been in love with Dove for years, but has always been cautious, and made sure Dove never noticed. Dove has grown to despise the captain over the years, because the alpha was always sleeping with another person.
I personally really loved the book. I had never read an Omegaverse book before, although it has been on my never ending TBR list for a long time. This novel was definitely a good introduction to the genre.
I read it in one sitting, because I just wanted to know what would happen next. It was a (for me) relatively short book (I read it in 3 hours) but I feel like it told the story well, and didn't really leave anything open in the end, which I personally really like.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to start reading or has already read some Omegaverse books.
I was so excited to read this book and it didn't disappoint me! I read it in one afternoon! The relationship is very, very sweet, the spice is good, and you lose the notion of time while you read this book. I wanted to know more about the Queens and other side characters; they felt a little underdeveloped. I wish we could explore them more in other books.
I was given an ARC for my honest opinion and review. I asked for the ARC for this because it hits just so many things that I either enjoy or actively look for; sapphic omegaverse, one-sided enemies to lovers, ect, and I was psyched when I got the email that my request got approved. I finished what I was reading previously and almost immediately started this up. And while it didn't live up to my hopes, I still enjoyed it. To start, for a debut, especially an indie debut, the editing done was pretty good and the romance was quite enjoyable, with mostly fleshed out and strong characters. Very character-driven in terms of plot, but that never a bad thing. It's just more a cozy, low-stakes romance; low plot and little outside forces fucking with the relationship. Dovely, called Dove for a majority of the novel, had agency and showed that though she was inclined to more homebody hobbies that didn't mean she didn't want to work. While May, despite being in such a high position, did struggle. Both with her illiteracy and with the tugs and pulls of loyalty when it came to both the crown and Dove. However, if miscommunication isn't your thing, it is an aspect of like a good 60% of the story until they get together officially. Pretty solid smut, if you ask me. The first scene lasts like 30 pages and I could pretty much always understand what was happening instead of it being bogged down with euphemisms and hand wavey explanations that just makes me wonder what is going on. Now what I think could have driven this story further is like a good extra 20+ pages, mainly from Dove's POV. We're told she hates May because May is a cocky womanizer but nowhere is that explained into how Dove came into this way of thinking, especially considering both characters high ties to the crown and the queen of the kingdom. Also slightly more build up would have been nice, since the first smut scene is almost immediate. And I would love to have seen more from either of the main character's families. Dove's get mentioned a decent amount, a visit off page here and there, and while May has a reason as to her parents not visiting, it is said that May has several siblings and yet there is nothing from them.
Now I felt the author either should have made the politics into a much larger thing, or cut it from the story entirely. Because in the way it's introduced into the story itself is a bit clunky, and only made me hate the monarchy of the kingdom it's set in, even when this conflict was ended with a optimist "and now it's settled and everyone just wanted the best for everyone." I don't expect a book that's not even 200 pages and mainly focused on romance to touch into morality, but it did leave a bad taste in my mouth. Also at first I totally thought Dovely was a nickname, and was absolutely thrown when it was said that Dove was the nickname. Cute, but I definitely think it should have been the other way around.
TDLR: if this were just a smidge longer it would be so good, and maybe either weave the politics more into the story or remove it completely would get a higher rating from me but over all solid read and if you're looking for a short, cute little pallet cleanser type read I recommend it.
❤️🔥Sapphic Omegaverse Romance with Spicy Spice!❤️🔥 I am thankful for the opportunity to get to advance read this book! It looked like a ton of fun, and delivered. I've never experienced the Omegaverse before, and this is also my first ARC, so do please take that into consideration when reading my thoughts 😊. So what did I think of this book? Short answer: Swoonworthy, endearing, with omfg top notch Sapphic Spice! ⚠️WARNING: do not read this at work unless you're willing to play Spice roulette! I'd honestly rate this work at 5 stars based on spice alone😉. However, the main characters and side characters really hit it home for me. I loved the Alpha and Omega concept, and how it added to the characters' complexity. There was just the right amount of age appropriate angst, that made me feel for these characters! Perfect pining, without feeling like you're in a highschool locker room! Silly me thinking I would just take this 1 chapter at a time. Nope! I was immediately sucked in, and couldn't make myself stop until I finished several chapters! I personally enjoyed how quickly things got started & heated up! I absolutely adored May & Dove's journey. It was entertaining, comical, and endearing. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to slap them at time🤣! R.J. Berryhill really packed quite a punch for the size of this novel! So do I think you will like this book? That depends really. If you like what I've said so far, probably! I don't think every book is for everyone. Personally, I enjoyed the world, the characters, the spice, and the closure. The story is about May & Dove and them navigating their feelings and lives after an event that wasn't what they had planned 🚫No Spoilers🚫. This book is at its core is a love story & it is a sweet one. The side characters were hella fun, and I can see where R.J. has left room to potentially revisit these characters later on. One critique I have seen was regarding the resolution of the secondary story (the world). In my opinion, the end was beautiful! It was so human, and a much needed reminder that not all conflicts have to be resolved with violence. Possibly the most exciting thing to me is that this is a Debut novel, and the promise this author has will be interesting to see 😉.
First off, massive thanks for RJ Berryhill for selecting me to be an ARC reader! Short story? I LOVED this book. Buy it. Seriously. Go enjoy some f/f omegaverse smut and sweetness. For real. Long story? I loved this book! May and Dove are both absolute sweethearts (especially May--love that diva so much), and they have some INTENSE chemistry both in and out of the bedroom ;) May is a HUGE lover girl, and Dovely deserves the world from her. I loved the relationships all the characters had with each other, and how it wasn't SOLELY focused on the May/Dove pairing. Obviously, they got the most attention, but it was really enjoyable to see the two of them interact with Taylor, and to see May's relationships in her work. Some books I've read almost isolate the main couple, and while I want to focus on the main pair, it's nice to see them as complex characters. I also enjoyed seeing Dove's interest in cooking; I love food lol. I loved some of the more dramatic moments (hint hint--carriage ride back, anyone? :D ) and was so happy with the ending. It was quickly paced, but I don't mind that, it kept me wanting to see what comes next! I toggled between a 4 and 5 with this one--I ended up going with a 5 because I really enjoyed the book, I know it's the author's first published book (congrats!), and the thing that was making me consider a 4, I think, is more based on personal preference. I was hoping to get a bit more backstory on the political side of things--I was really interested in May's experience in the war, the running of the kingdom, and the everyday life/routine in the castle. However, that's just my personal curiosity speaking, and so I didn't think it took away anything from the story enough to bring it down to a 4. Would be very interested however in a sequel/prequel so as to go in more detail! Thank you again for letting me meet May and Dove, I loved seeing their relationship <3
Thank you to RJ Berryhill for the eARC of this book!! This is my honest review ✨
3.25/5 ⭐s!
The Accidental Alpha is a sapphic omegaverse that follows Dove, a strongly opinionated and independent omega, and May, an alpha that's absolutely head over heels in love with Dove. They have a one night stand when Dove goes into an incredibly painful heat, which results in Dove's pregnancy. This wouldn't be too unusual, except Dove seems to hate May's guts.
Personally, I'm strongly of the opinion that we need more sapphic omegaverse out there, ESPECIALLY with the accidental pregnancy trope, so I was THRILLED when I first read the premise for this one! And overall I enjoyed it, there was a HEA (incredibly important to me) and I liked the main couple!!
I will say, I was kind of confused as to why Dove seemed to hate May so much, as the main reasoning seemed to be that she thought May was...a player? They don't talk about it a whole lot, but Dove just suddenly realizes she was wrong about May, and that felt a little abrupt to me.
That being said, I still enjoyed the story, and I thought the universe it was in was interesting!! If the author puts out other books in this universe, I would pick them up and give them a go! I'd love to read more about the setting and the relationships between other characters as well :)
Accidental Alpha is the perfect title for the love story of the Omega Dove and the Alpha May. Sharing the friendship of the Queen, the two say each other quite frequently; but that didn't stop the two of them of feeling awkward around each other. During the wedding of the Queen Taylor, Dove is having her strongest heat yet, and being in a room full of Alphas they can easily smell her need. This also means Dove could easily be swift of her feet by any Alpha close to her if she cannot control it to the point of perhaps having to spend the night either in complete agony and pain, or with someone she might regret later. But May, who has been secretly in love for years with Dove, is there, ready to protect her from other Alphas and serve her needs if she dares open that door between them.
Congrats to the author for releasing her first book! It truly shows promise and I am sure every reader will see this when reading The Accidental Alpha. The world-building is great, we get many lovely descriptions of the kingdom, the nature and inside the rooms. Dove is a strong-will woman but also quite sweet. May is fantastic, very attentive, beautiful, down to earth. The two of them have some opinions of each other that I wish we had more scenarios to explain how and why they got to that point. Additionally, one of the main plot aside from the heat is the pregnancy so keep that in mind. I wonder why the Queen didn't try more to help these two overcome their prejudices against each other. Also I would have liked to explore more why Taylor did such a change towards May; the scene was perfectly executed, I could feel the strong emotions from both of them but wished we had a bit of more context. Even if I would've like to have some more development of the background issue and of Taylor, we get to have a bit of backstory of our main heroines, descriptions of the world and a steamy, cozy, love sapphic story that you will enjoy. I truly cannot wait to read more stories by RJ Berryhill. TYSM for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
After keeping each other at a distance for years, a steamy night between May and Dove leads to life altering circumstances. The Accidental Alpha is very low stakes book with cozy or soft omegaverse vibes. I read it because it promised FF omegaverse with knotting and it delivered!
Now, objectively speaking, I found the world-building a little lacking. The book cover helps with creating an idea of what time period this story is set in but if not for the cover, I would have had a hard time creating that initial picture of the characters in my mind.
Subjectively, I wish the story was just told without what felt like info dumping about what omegaverse is. Although, it’s definitely helpful if this book is the reader’s first dip into omegaverse.
Would I recommend this book? Of course, I would. The book would be a good read for anyone looking for a soft intro into omegaverse. I love ff omegaverse and I can’t wait to read more from this author.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of The Accidental Alpha! As always, all opinions are my own and this review is being left voluntarily.
I really wanted to love this because I enjoy reading omegaverse fanfics on AO3. Sadly, this one was a miss for me. I didn’t feel like the story was fleshed out enough for my liking. The beginning was a bit jarring in terms of Dove’s feelings toward May shifting rather abruptly. I would have liked to seen these feelings explored more.
Additionally, I think I just don’t like omegaverse books where terms like “her omega” are used (in reference to herself). Insinuating it’s a separate entity from herself. I haven’t read any omegaverse that used language like that and it was a bit off putting to me for whatever reason.
This was my first omegaverse novel, and I'm glad that it was! It was a very cozy read, and a quick one as well. I really enjoyed getting to read about May and seeing her character develop throughout the book. I'm usually not a fan of the miscommunication trope, but I think it worked well here since the reader has access to both May's and Dove's emotions. Dove's character fell a bit flat for me, but I enjoyed seeing the two leads interacting with each other, and I think the chemistry between them felt organic and not forced. Overall this was a great debut novel and I look forward to seeing what else RJ Berryhill will publish.
May and Dove, both, have loved each other for a very long time. Both are equally scared to admit it to the other, instead they fight with each other. But when the most basest need of an Omega makes the Alpha respond, they can't fight what happens. Its only afterwards that they are back to fighting. Wow.
It did work out for them in the end, and both May and Dove get exactly what they both had been looking for. A Family together.
I absolutely adore This couple!! This was my first time reading OV, and I very much enjoyed this story. I like the fact that nothing was overly complicated. It was nice to see two people heal from their past and it not be a disastrous experience. This will definitely in my top 3 comfort reads.
This book was very cute! A nice short read for me! Perfect if you’re looking for a nice shorter book for your weekend or day off! I definitely recommend!
