Bring the Heat #4

Knox

As another member of my friend group finds his happily ever after, I’m starting to think I’ve missed the chance at my own. I keep myself plenty busy with the fire station and my contracting business, but when a mandatory rest order from my fire chief leaves me with extra time on my hands, my friends convince me to change my routine and step outside my comfort zone in order to find what I’m looking for.
I thought drinking different beer, in a different bar, in a different part of town would suffice, but fate has other plans, and Taylor enters my life in a whirlwind of chaos.
There’s a zero percent chance he’s what I need...or want for that matter. He’s far too young, much too vibrant…and a guy. But still, I’m consumed by thoughts of him. His voice, his smile, and the pain in his eyes that mirrors my own continue to haunt me long after I flee the bar.
So, when I show up to a new job site and it’s Taylor who answers the door, I know I’m in trouble.
Ten days is all it takes for Taylor Landry to send everything I thought I knew about myself UP IN FLAMES.

Taylor

A catastrophic breakup with a man I never should’ve touched left me numb, at odds with my family, and unable to find my fire. So, when my siblings offer to take me out for my birthday, I jump at the chance for reconciliation and a night of fun. But one wrong step has me literally landing in the arms of a stranger. And the connection is enough to reignite my missing spark.
Except one look tells me history is about to repeat itself, and I can’t go down this road again.
But when the ruggedly handsome stranger shows up on my doorstep two weeks later, I become determined to get under his skin and into his bed. Knox Bennett is everything I should avoid. He's over forty, moody as hell…and straight. Yet I find myself inexplicably drawn to him. When he proves he’s willing to learn, I’m more than ready to teach.
It only takes ten days to realize we’ll either ruin each other beyond repair or be exactly what the other needs to set our hearts and bodies ablaze.

The pipeline from "I'm not gay." to "You can have five minutes to use me however you want."

💀

And Taylor clearly belongs to the 'You don't need to get ready if you stay ready' school of thought because—

"I only need one."

Oh.

Still. This one kind of bored me. Maybe I went into it with very high expectations based on how much I liked the other books. It's not bad, it's just not great.

After the sixth hour, I was basically phoning it in to the ninth.

On the fun side, Iggy Toma doesn't sound like a dying Victorian child when you listen at 1.5x.

I’ll be the first to admit that after that body shot at the end of From the Ashes, I was foaming at the mouth for Knox’s book, but wasn’t quite sure what to expect.

His character, while important to the friend group, always felt like a bit of an outsider—mostly of his own making. Which only became more apparent as the friend group started pairing off with their significant others.

He absolutely needed someone like Taylor, who is so carefree and sunshine incarnate, to shake up the monotony and break through his closed off exterior. & I really thought they balanced each other out so well.

Their relationship was a whirlwind, but I kind of loved it? It was hot and heavy, but also really supportive and caring (something they both needed so much).

Seeing as the first book in this series is one of my favorite books, I was sooo excited for this book. And while I did like it, I was disappointed by it in a lot of ways. I started off liking Taylor, and then it’s like him and Knox from the beginning had a personality switch and I started to really not like him.

How is it the guy who said you manipulated him into a relationship and basically destroyed your relationship with your family comes around on your anniversary date with your bf and you start thinking of good times you had with him, of fucking him?!?! Like what the fuck?? It was really annoying. And then because you were annoyed that your boyfriend was talking over you, you FUCKING ASSAULT HIM?! And never even apologize for that?? Very weird and made me hate Taylor.

This is actually probably a five star review, except that the covers really bring me down. Jillian’s writing is perfect. I could not put this book down for three days. Every spare minute I was in my phone, reading. But the art style 😭 not my preference. ☹️ I’m afraid people aren’t going to pick up her books bc of the covers but let me stop you there! Pick up the books! Read them in order.

Anyhoo, the cheating theme you have in the first two books is gone for good it seems, which I miss. But the story is perfect. The first part of intense connection happens over a span of ten days which seems absurdly short for a couple to realize they mean everything to each other but Jillian does a great job making it feels like weeks and weeks instead of ten days. Then the relationship truly solidifies over the next ten months before I love you’s are exchanged which I appreciated.

Negs- you can see Damon’s story coming from a mile away. I feel for the ole boy and what he’s gotten himself into with Liam. That’s going to be a long ass ski trip. My prediction (wish?) is for them to be snowed in (FORCED PROXIMITY FOR THE WIN!!) 😂

And can I just say, if Patrick gets a redemption arc, I might riot. 😠

Anywayyyy, thank you Jillian for writing stories I love. I love your style and your fearless way of writing. 🩶🩶🩶

DNF at 15% in.

Congratulations.

The story managed to fumble what could have been a great character (Knox, of course), losing him to a generic, predictable story with a superficial bimbo and zero chemistry,

and to top it all off, this is what you get for a good start

“I have to agree, boss. He was definitely looking at you like you’re a snack.”
I turn slowly, my brow arched as I pin Phil with a stare. “A snack? What are we, middle school girls?”

Yeah, I think I'm done with this author.

I was SOOO excited for Knox’s book upon reading this series. He is my fav out of this friend group by FAR !

Knox Bennet is the broody, grumpy, sexy older mmc that I ALWAYS fall in love with. The one that has baggage that you just LONG to fix. I CAN FIX HIM I SWEAR

Well, don’t worry, because Taylor Landry is going to try to do that for you.

I will be very for real, Taylor’s character was very pushy and sometimes he angered me, but I think that was the point. For his character to push Knox out of his comfort zone and to be a complete 180 from each other.

There was a lot of give and take between these mcs. A lot of push and pull. A LOT OF ANGST. This one will put you in your feels every few chapters. I teared up quite a few times.
I did eat this book up in a single day, not gonna lie. I LOVE this series and the found family aspect in every single book. This family just MAKES these books worth the reads.

Overall, 4 ⭐️, 2 🌶️

Thank you so much to Jillian and team for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Up In Flames!

I was on the edge of my seat waiting for Knox's story after that tease of a body shot from one of the previous books! Knox was portrayed as such a strong silent type, but he was in so much pain! He found Taylor, who was going through his own pain, and they connected through that!

I loved the level of emotions through this, how they helped each other heal! They took turns being each other's strength when the other just couldn't. I also adore that the friends group was still so active in each other's lives! Even with everyone having significant others, they still are there for each other! it's wonderful!

This whole series is just one great book after another!

Up in Flames is book 4 in the Bring the Heat series, which continues to live up to its namesake. I have loved every book so far, but Taylor and Knox may be my new favorites. I loved Taylor’s sass and relentless attempts to crack Knox. They were perfect for each other.

This one was okay. Same formula….one wants the other and the other takes forever to figure it out. Three stars because while I skimmed some, I did want to know how it all ended and I absolutely love the side characters. I’ve got Liam and Damon’s story on my calendar but I’m not feeling eager for it like I was this one and Phoenix’s.

2 stars alone for the fact that they met eachother after he sang to benson boone and cried after.. the games well and truly gone. this book is actually the worst shit i’ve read in a LONG time, it’s every cliche ever but even worse because it’s not even written well & by the last plot twist i just had to laugh.

Grumpy x sunshine
Bi-awakening
Forced proximity
Possessive MMC

I thought this story was super cute. I couldn’t put it down, but not to say it’s without faults. This was a quick and easy read with some good spice!

I enjoyed Knox getting his whatever-his-label-is- awakening, but felt like he kinda sucked big time for a few chapters. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED him and his possessive ways once he figured it out.

Taylor really was just a ray of sunshine and I loved him. I wish we got more info on him/them at the end of the book. I have unanswered questions- nothing really that affects the plot of the story, but more because I’m a curious person and need all the details.

I love Phoenix and all of his cameos. Glad we got to see the whole crew!

I really hate Taylor’s family. I wish Livvy had stuck by him through all of Patrick drama. She did come around, but I felt so bad for Taylor that everyone picked Patrick over him. I still don’t forgive Damon. What an a**. I love redemption arcs and I feel like he’s set up to get a story, and I’d probably read it but I don’t feel like he deserves it 😆

Up in Flames was the perfect kind of comfort read. The one that sneaks warmth into your chest and leaves you smiling when it’s over. Knox and Taylor’s story felt like a slow, healing exhale...soft, funny, a little spicy, and just the right touch of angst to make it real.

What really got me though? The found family. Every side character added something genuine and grounding.
That bond between Knox and Phoenix, the banter, the unwavering support — it’s the heartbeat of the story. You can feel the love, the loyalty, and the laughter that runs through this little world.

This wasn’t just a romance. It was a reminder that sometimes, the family you build ends up saving you more than the one you’re born into. And I adored every second of it.

i loved being back in this friend group and in jillian’s writing. there’s always lots of drama in these books but the connection that the main characters form means they face it extremely well. knoxy had amazing character development and i loved how open he was to change, especially when he hadn’t really had any in years. and taylor was fun, glad he was able to be himself with knox and he had some good emotional development. i didn’t super connect with this story compared to the others but the romance was still good and i do so love a possessive man. also i am extremely excited/scared for the pain that will be taylor’s twin’s story which starts another series that im positive i’ll also be obsessed with!

I loved this book! First let me just say, I SO appreciate Jillian adding a trigger warning section to her website and referencing it in this book. I called attention to the lack of content warnings in previous books because I felt they were especially relevant for some unexpected scenarios. I don’t know if she saw my comments or they made an impact, but I’m glad the option is in this book with information on where to fine them.

Now onto the story.

Another good one in this series. As the previous books the connection between the two mc’s is amazing. This story is about Knox 40 something, divorced, heartbroken and aimless. He feels adrift with his friends who all found their HEA. At this point he just stoped trying, but one night he decided to change his routine and do something different that’s how he meets Taylor. And let me tell ya, that boy is fire. There’s a considerable age gap, which I don’t love very much, but somehow it worked. They both are a little broken and bruised, but they also heal each other along the way.

“For everyone who feels like they don’t fit any of the labels society hands out.”

The cover immediately caught my interest and the blurb sounded good, so of course i wanted to read it and i wanted to love this book so much, but i just can't stand Taylor. I'm sorry, but in my eyes, he's just an annoying brat who acts like a kid who doesn't get the toy he wants. I thought maybe if i just kept reading the book, he'd get better, and he did but i still don’t like him that much. And i just couldn't feel a deep connection between them. Maybe it's just me, but i personally can't believe they're in love, it felt so superficial and fake.

Especially the scene at the end, both of them behaved so childishly.
You're both grown men, please act like it.

This was my first book by this author and I i have to say, i really liked her writing style and i think it's a shame that i didn't start with the first book straight away. I'm often not interested in the side characters but here they piqued my interest but i still couldn't really connect with them, so i think I'll read the other books in the series as well.

- still a huge thank you to the author for sending me the e-arc in exchange for an honest review. -

Knox and Tay.... Ugh two broken boys who stole my heart. I love a good age gap, hurt/comfort, and let me tell you this delivered. Both hurt from past relationships that broke who they were, watching them come together, heal, and find love was perfect. I love these guys! And their found family.

🔥10 days. That's all it took to send everything I thought I knew about myself up in flames🔥

I haven't been closeted, or normal by society's sandards, a single day in my life. I'll be damned if I start now. I'm strong willed. I'm confident. I'm fabulous. And I refuse to dim my light to make others happy."

"I'm sure I'm a sight to behold in my frilly new outfit, baking cookies, and head banging to metal, but for the first time in a long time, I'm smiling at myself."

"Knox, you can't light yourself on fire to keep someone else warm. Other people's happiness isn't your responsibility."

"You are the most wonderful blend of all the things I never knew I wanted."
"For what it's worth, Knox, you're a pretty incredible blend of things I knew I wanted but wasn't sure I'd ever find."

"It's okay to hurt, to be mad, to be sad. It doesn't make you weak, and even if it did, it's okay to let someone else be the strong one every now and then."

"Ten days. That's all it took to send everything I thought I knew about myself, sex and relationships completely up in flames."

What a phenomenal end to this amazing series! I have been waiting to read Knox's story and see what his past entailed. This book had some amazing troupes like age gap, forced proximity, hurt/comfort, bi awakening, and grumpy/sunshine. This author always has a great mix of plot, spice, and emotional depth in these stories.

This story follows Knox and Taylor. Knox has been alone for so many years. He's divorced and still hurting from his ex-wife walking out on him 5 years ago with just a note. He decides to finally take Phoenix's advice and switch it up. He goes to a bar to meet women, but Taylor ends up falling into his lap, literally lol. Taylor is getting over a bad break up and just wants to be himself again. He always has to dim his light to appease others. He ends up kissing Knox that night, which wakes something up in Knox. Knox ends up taking a construction job, which happens to be at Taylor's parents' house 😏😉. Let's just say Taylor knows what he wants and that's Knox 🤣🤣.

God I loved these two together. They were complete opposites, but they meshed so well together. There was quite the push and pull as Knox was so confused as he thought he was straight. He was also consumed by the age gap. Once he got over that, it was so easy for him to accept Taylor and his sexuality. At first, Taylor just wanted to play with Knox and open up his eyes as to what he couldn't accept, but then he fell fast, which sacred him. I loved how possessive Knox was. I loved how dominant Taylor could be in the bedroom. They both had some interesting role reversals. The spice and connection between them was 🥵🥵🔥🔥🔥. I was so happy to finally see Knox get his forever person 🥹🥹. One of my favorite parts was when Taylor interacted with Karen 😌. Taylor was such a strong ray of sunshine and so comfortable in his skin. He definitely lit up Knox's life and set it on fire🔥 .

I loved seeing all the other couples interact and the found family become bigger! Their interactions are so hilarious and had me cackling so loud 😅😅. Seeing the Reckless on Ice cameo was everything!!!! I loved Taylor's family and can't wait for Damon's book OMG! A new series from this author sounds amazing 😍. I highly recommend this series if you want great banter, hot spice, an engaging plot, and a dose of hurt/comfort.

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jillian has such a way of pulling the reader into the story and making us fall for the characters with ease. Every. Single. Time. Knox and Taylor were easy to fall for, even if they had some trouble themselves. I really enjoyed seeing the dynamic of their relationship, the fluidity of them, that I haven’t seen yet (that’s more me than the books/storyline not being out there 😅). I loved seeing Knox finally coming into his own and embracing his healing and newfound relationship. Taylor is a force to be reckoned with most of the time, but also can feel vulnerable with what he’s gone through. So seeing Knox give in and step up FOR Tay? *chef’s kiss*

Taylor is the light in Knox’s dark that he never knew he needed. He’s straight, so no man has ever even crossed his mind like that. Until Taylor. His bright light becomes the one thing that may help Knox move past the woman he’s been grieving for five years after she left him with no explanation. Taylor had his world turned upside down by the love of his life. He lost family over a lie. So when the older, broody man across the karaoke bar catches his eye, and the scorching kiss they share leaves him breathless, he knows he wants him. But is he just another man he helps embrace the side of him that’s always been hidden to then get burned? Or is Knox the man he’s always needed that will set his soul in flames with the love he’s yet to find?

Knox and Taylor are such a vibe! Each of them has pain and trauma to work through, but instead of running or isolating, they draw strength from each other. A first for them. Of course they have to go through some shit in order to make it out on the other side. I am so here for the overall theme of love and acceptance. We could really use more of that in the world. The haters and naysayers get what’s coming to them here, and let’s manifest that for the real world too 😉 love is love, and f*ck anyone who thinks otherwise!

I can’t thank Jillian enough for writing these wonderful stories and letting me be part of each and every one! I am beyond grateful to have ARC’d most of her books! I just love her to pieces! I’m so excited to dive into her next series, Richochet Ridge. An Easter egg “hidden” in this book you say? Maybe 🤷🏽‍♀️😏

🧰“I told him I didn’t want him. And I don’t. Except for the part of me that does.”
🎨“Knox may be a protector, but I have a savior complex a mile wide.”

ARC Review

"Up in Flames"

(Bring the Heat Book 4)

by Jillian D. Wray

After being the most fortunate to receiving the second ARC from Jillian (previous book Walker & Phoenix was the first) I now have the certainty that Jillian's writing is some kind of spell that us readers gladly fall in.

Reaching this stage in MM romance books world, I now know I don't ever want to live in a world where I can't read them. With that in mind, this was my first where one of the M's was openly feminine. And oh, what a ride it was!

I loved everything. I loved Knox and I loved Taylor. Differently, but loved them. Together.

I adored that I laughed, that I cried, that I closed my eyes momentarily several times to just breath, that I fell for their pasts full of pain, that that group of friends is quite something to cherish.

Jillian writes these characters with such care I wish I could give her a hug and say thank you for the beautiful human being you are.

Thank you to the author for another amazing ARC. This is another favorite for me.

---

some my favorite quotes:

a flicker of desire would really help let me know I'm not broken beyond repair.

Not all of us can be beautiful, smart, and straight.

he's singing to someone who hurt him. Someone who left him.
And I feel that like a punch to the throat.
I don't even know the kid, but I'd love to hurt whoever made him feel like this.

Misery loves company, as they say.

I've completely lost myself in my pain, grief, guilt, and isolation.

That voice could make me fall in love with him so easily.

"He was definitely looking at you like you're a snack."

I really can't explain it, but I have the need to get under this man's skin.

"I'm tired of being alone."

His desire is obvious in the way his pupils are dilated and his nostrils flare with untamed lust.

You can't hide true lust and desire.

There is finally sun on my horizon.

He's a light shining into all my dark corners.

Kissing Taylor isn't just a kiss. It's a religious experience, a call to arms, a declaration of humanity's ability to love, persevere, and survive. And I never want it to end.

quick mostly enjoyable but definitely lacking read

This is a tough book to review… on one hand, I flew thru it. It definitely keeps you engaged. But on the other hand, it really didn’t work as a whole for me. I LOVE the other books in the series and was so excited for Knox’s story so maybe my expectations were too high.

For the first half of the book, Knox was dreadfully pathetic. And not in a bless his heart, protect him at all cost way… just in a cringy sad way. I know that sounds harsh and he does eventually come around but he was not the dynamic black cat daddy I was expecting. This book is kinda all over the place with tropes, pacing, and character arcs. It starts with your stereotypical MMCs. Knox is your brooding, insecure, middle aged white dude. Again not quite in a sexy, misunderstood grumpy book boyfriend way but like he probably voted for Donnie T the first time and listens to questionable podcasts (he is not a homophobe or bigot at all, just very traditional). Then the other main character is the epitome of the over-sexualized sassy, hot mess twink trope. He’s pushy and “falls fast” but also wants to run away and not settle down. Then their dynamic gets less stereotypical, which is good, but ultimately the relationship felt confusing and lacking intentional direction. Even the spice seemed weird and random to me. The whole book was a giant juxtaposition.

There was also toooooooo much push and pull. So the delicious yearning morphed into unnecessary annoyance instead of the well-paced character development you’d expect from a slow burn. I wish the first half of the book was literally cut in half so we could have had more of them building and enjoying a secure relationship. The end seemed rushed and like important moments were left out. The plot made sense for sure, just incomplete.

However, I still read it in a day! The author really is an amazing storyteller and I will continue to read whatever she writes. And I do like Knox and Taylor. They are super sweet and complement each other well and I can see what the author was going for I think. It just didn’t hit like the rest of the series.

The spicy scenes were well done and there was also emotional and vulnerable scenes as well to create a nice balance. This book has drama, comfort, connection, humor, and was really entertaining start to finish. The first half of the book is a slow build up and the second half really ramps up and continues that way till the end. I loved all of the characters (except Patrick) and I can't wait to go back and read the other books in the series. I recommend giving this book a read if you are interested by any of the above, I finished this book in one sitting.

OMG this cover alone deserves an ovation. 👏👏👏👏 also the alternative cover too let’s not forget that one…

Up in Flames by the spectacular Jillian D. Wray (Super Mega Fan here 🙋‍♀️)

You all know that Mrs. Wray graces my IG and TT all the time! And why wouldn’t she!?!? If this delicious book isn’t obvious enough grab ANYTHING out of her backlog and be prepared to be hooked.
If you’re looking for a book that delivers emotional wreckage in the best way possible, spiceeeee, heart, witty banter, and found family then Up in Flames absolutely delivers that in spades!
Jillian does not just write chemistry she ignites it. Like I’m 99% sure she has dragon fire 🔥 flowing in her veins because DAMN 🔥🌶️🥵.

From the first page, the exquisite tension between these two is so thick and palpable you could slice it with a knife, and once it finally explodes? Pardon me I’m just a puddle on the floor! This romance is packed full to the edges of the pages with intensity, vulnerability, aching anticipation, and utter and complete satisfaction! Her character are always so fully faceted! They feel real and it’s impossible not to root for them.
What I loved most about this book like all of her books is how this book balances its spice with genuine emotional depth. The passion never overshadows the character growth it completely amplifies it.
And you as a reader feel like a voyeur… every look, every touch, every unspoken moment carries weight, and the slow build toward emotional connection makes the payoff feel huge and like you’re right there experiencing it with them.
And the found-family vibes? The loyalty? The protective instincts?
Yes. All of it. No notes.
By the time I closed this book I was smiling, swooning, and already desperate to reread my favorite scenes. Up in Flames didn’t just live up to the series it set it on a blazing fire. Well done Jillian you have nailed it again! But we all knew you would! I can’t wait for what you have up your sleeve for us next!

Highly recommend if you love:
🔥 High-heat romance
♥️ Deep emotional connection
🫠 Protective MMC energy
🥵 Strong chemistry & unforgettable moments
This one stays with you. 💜🔥

I’ve been waiting for Knox's book since that epilogue shots scene in the Phoenix's book. That scene left me GAGGED and wanting his book right away. Because what do you mean our resident grump and oldest in the friend group is the next to find love and will have his own gay awakening?? I WAS SEATED.

In Up In Flames, we follow the group's grump as he stumbles into a late-in-life gay awakening. Pair that with a sunshine love interest that is my baby TAYLORRRR and a 21-year age gap, and you get a love story that's full of push and pull but also a lot of patience, and a genuine effort to meet each other where they are. Knox trying to understand his fluidity and Taylor giving him room to breathe and feel safe to explore made their dynamic feel grounded and oh so precious. There's also a huge element of hurt/comfort which I won't disclose for spoilery reasons, but those were my favourite parts of their blooming romance as well!

ALSO, THAT kitchen scene when Knox's ex-wife shows up?? 10/10. No notes. The whole scene had me glued to the page. It hit the emotional tension perfectly without dragging the mood down. I was SO proud of Knox's growth!!

This book gave me everything I hoped for from that original tease and more. It’s tender, messy in the right way, and incredibly satisfying for anyone who loves grump x sunshine with a late-blooming twist.

If you love your MM romance with lots of angst AND heat as well as tenderness, READ THIS ONE RIGHT NOW!

Thank you Jillian and team for my copy of the ARC.

Up in Flames: Bring the Heat Book #4

ARC Review: Release Date 10/23

This was my first Jillian D Wary book, so if you didn’t realize that means that I hav only read this books in the series. So it absolutely can be read as a standalone and you won’t feel like you are missing anything. However, I am a little sad because I really enjoyed this book and I think I would have like it more if I was connected to some of the back characters and if I was introduced to Knox earlier. With that though this book was fun, and light and I enjoyed it very much.
