Continue the journey north in this award-winning and bestselling portal fantasy graphic novel rooted in Nordic folklore.
Separated from Espen and the trolls, Sonja must forge a path through the wondrous landscape of Jotundalen with the troubled and magical Lotta. As the two new friends trek into the mountains to find Lotta’s reclusive people, Sonja will discover her own family mystery that will lead them deep into the darkest and most dangerous corners of the forest. Meanwhile, Espen, desperate to find Sonja, teams up with an unlikely new ally who may lead him to unexpected answers.
This volume includes Kråkesøstrene and Trollriket, originally published in Norwegian.

Even better than book 1! The images are stunning and colorful, the lore expands, and I’m even more invested in these characters now than I was before. (HOWEVER! Big trigger warning for pet death… specifically a dog 😭)
Sonja’s adventure continues and we get even more questions than answers along with a broader scope of this world and more problems, some of which our heroes aren’t even aware of yet, but at least this volume doesn’t end on a cliffhanger like the first one did!
We get more lore about how their world came to be and the three different groups—Vikings, Trolls, and Mountain People—who don’t get along in the slightest and have more grudges and old family dirt than a baggage claim, and our heroes are just trying to navigate it all while keeping those they love safe. Ravdna I could tell right off the bat isn’t a good guy, her smile creeped me out as it doesn’t reach her eyes (I love how the author’s able to capture so much emotion in these characters’ eyes!) and the whole way she treated the situation, first with Sonja and then with Daisy (not to mention Espen before all this by calling him a “this” as if he isn’t a person and then her minions threw him, a very clearly injured boy, on the ground, what the heck?!), was just not okay and very manipulatively cruel, if that makes any sense. Point is, I don’t like her one bit, and I’m glad that at least Espen and Sonja don’t either.
I have so many questions surrounding Espen as the story goes on, like how old he is, WHAT he is, why does he seem great with both trolls and humans yet can be their enemy in a second, and WHY did he want that pin back from Sonja in Volume One? He’s an intriguing character I want to know more about every time he says or does something, the author’s doing a fantastic job in writing him, as she is with all the characters. I love Sonja’s heart and Lotta bickering with Espen is both exasperating and very sibling-like, haha, but ultimately I love how they’re all slowly turning into a solid and great friend group, as the last two drawings in the Sketches section of the volume, and my favorites, show!
The art is gorgeous as always; I love how she conveys emotions and thoughts so well in the characters and also sound and movement in the quiet, still moments where a manhwa especially would shove in sound effects words every second they could (they’re super obnoxious about this for some reason, lol) but here she allows you to hear them yourself without prompts and that takes serious talent and skill that this author has in spades.
Even though I’m bummed I’ll have to probably wait another year for the next volume, I’m so happy I was able to continue with this one and get to hang out with these characters in this beautiful world again. I’m looking forward to the adventure continuing!
