Caught between a betrothal she never wanted and deadly secrets she can’t escape, Ara must master her magic—but the harder she fights to hold her world together, the faster it unravels.
Tate’s past is clawing its way back, threatening to destroy everything he’s built. With enemies looming close by and deadly trials around the corner, revenge may finally be within reach—but at what cost?
Entangled in shifting allegiances and political schemes, Ara and Tate must decide who they can trust, and whether loyalty to each other is worth risking everything.
Trials of Embers and Trust is the spellbinding second book in the Flameborn series—perfect for fans of slow-burn tension, forced proximity, and the aching choice between love and duty, all set in a world of dangerous trials, political intrigue, and dark secrets.
K.J. Altair is the author of the Flameborn series, a character driven fantasy romance filled with sizzling tension, banter, high stakes, and a dash of spice. Ever since she learned to read, books have been her constant companions and —apart from her husband and kids— she loves nothing more than getting lost in another world.
When she’s not writing, she can be found devouring novels (especially fantasy and romance), indulging in dark chocolate, or traveling and enjoying the magic of the real world.

I loved this book! It’s so fast paced and bingeable. I needed to know to know what was going to happen next. The first book was so good at world building and developing the relationship between Tate and Ara. This one had lots of miscommunication and yearning. I love the tension and toxicity. It felt like a real relationship with all the messy parts. Plus, the delicious spice when they made up! It is so well done. I love how Ara and Tate challenge each other and are both stubborn and jealous. I can really relate to that.
This book whole book just had me wanting more of these characters. I love the academy setting, the trials with the goddess, and of course, all the banter and teasing between the friends. If you liked fourth wing, I think you devour this series. It ends on a cliffhanger, and I will absolutely be pre-ordering book 3!
KJ my dear! You’ve done it again! Trials of Embers and Trust is book two in the Flameborn series and it was just as good if not better than the first! Speaking of, if you’ve NOT read book one I’d stop now and go do that. If you enjoyed Dire Bound you’ll love Feathers of Ash and Hope, promise!
“You look beautiful, little sparrow, and like you were about to kill the crown prince,” my brother tells me while smoothly maneuvering me onto the dance floor. “I was close, and you look pretty handsome yourself,”
In book two, the relationship between Ara and Tate grows even more taut with secrets, schemes, and the resurfacing of past traumas. Ara is working to control her (illegal) gift, keep her family and friends safe, and honor new alliances all with an unwanted marriage looming on the horizon; while Tate is trying to dispatch a long ago threat and win some deadly trials in hopes of securing the future he’s dreamed of. There’s tension, betrayal, yearning, political intrigue, and even a little heartbreak. I cried, I’ll admit it. Even the miscommunication trope was done to perfection, which I feel is hard to do.
Fuck, I love her tendency to drive her head through a wall rather than give up, and the fire in her eyes when she goes toe-to-toe with me. I love every reckless, stubborn fiber of her, which makes her exactly what my enemies have been looking for, and she doesn’t even see it.
This book was beautifully done and I’m honored to have once again been trusted with a gifted eARC. I’ll be anxiously awaiting book three in 2026.
Loving you woke me up, changed me. It’s part of who I am now. You exist, and I’m yours. It’s as easy as that.”
Trials of Embers and Trust what such a good read!! In this sequel Ara and Tate continue to unravel each other’s secrets, we learn more about Ara’s power, who the Titan’s are and the enemies start making their appearances. There is still many more secrets, gosh the amount of secrets they both have and the fervor mostly Ara held on to hers made me a bit frustrated! I wanted to scream to her to just tell him!! Also Ara’s relationship with Solaris and her friends grows and it’s nice to see that even though she feels alone at times she will always have Solaris by her side. Ara also starts figuring out what Tate can’t tell her and with her learning more about him and her power she isn’t defenseless at all towards the people coming for her on behalf of him! I can’t wait for the next sequel there is still soo much we haven’t been told, gosh this book felt soo secretive and I hope I finds lots more truths in the next one! But as said before it was such a great read and I want to thank KJ Altair for this arc copy to review! Undoubtedly a 5 star read!!
I had the absolute pleasure of ARC reading Trials of Embers and Trust, the second installment in the Flameborn series, after also getting to read book one, Feathers of Ash and Hope. I truly feel blessed to have experienced both books early, and I can confidently say this series has quickly become my all-time favorite.
K.J. Altair’s storytelling is nothing short of magical—captivating, emotional, and impossible to put down. From the very first page, this book swept me away. The worldbuilding is rich and immersive, the pacing is sharp, and every chapter keeps you hooked with unexpected twists and turns that leave you desperate for more.
Ara, in this book, tested every ounce of my patience (in the best way). Her stubbornness and choices made me want to pull my hair out—but that frustration speaks to how real and well-written her character is. On the other hand, Tate absolutely stole my heart all over again. His intensity, his unwavering devotion, and his “she is mine” energy practically leap off the page. If I could build a machine to bring him to life, I absolutely would!
The chemistry and yearning between Ara and Tate is perfection—tense, emotional, and beautifully balanced. Their relationship is the kind that lingers long after you’ve closed the book.
Trials of Embers and Trust is a breathtaking sequel that builds on everything I loved about the first book and raises the stakes in every way. It’s gripping, emotional, and unforgettable—a true page-turner that I’ll be recommending to readers for years to come.
If you love fantasy with romance, twists, and characters who feel like they could step off the page, this series is an absolute must-read.
And now, all I can say is… I cannot wait for book three! The anticipation is going to drive me crazy until it’s in my hands.
5 ⭐️ KJ, you did it again! Wow! This sequel is even better than I expected! Thank you so much, for the opportunity to ARC read this book.
I will start off by saying that KJ did a phenomenal job in book 1 with the world building and setting the tone. Going into book 2, all the ground work was already laid and jumping back into the story was like "coming home". So easy to follow and get lost in!
This book was fast paced, action packed, plot heavy and the tension + yearning was to die for! If you loved Fourth Wing and/or Direbound, you will LOVE this series! Just like book 1, I was invested the entire time! I enjoyed the ups and downs of our main characters relationship as well as the character development. The ending of the book has me so excited for the next installment in this series 🙌🏽
KJ has a way of captivating you with her lush writing style and ability to bring a story to life. I absolutely loved this book and I will be eagerly waiting on book 3! Well done, KJ! 🫶🏼👏🏽
‘Trials of Embers and Trust’ by KJ Altair Book 2 in the Flameborn Series 📚 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was given book 1 as an ARC and absolutely loved it so I was over the moon that I was chosen to ARC reader for book 2.
In this book, the story of Ara and Tate continues. Their journey has led them from the military academy to polite society with royals and they are surrounded by betrayal and deceit. They have to navigate dangerous alliances that will make or break them. A wedding looms, deadly trials begin and the past is rearing its ugly head, therefore Ara and Tate seem to always be racing the clock.
Ara is still a defiant, headstrong woman who will stop at nothing to make sure those she loves are safe. Tate will burn the world to ash for her.
These two characters have swiftly become one of my favourite book couples and I could read about them all day long.
📚Dual POV 📚Deadly Trials 📚Forbidden Love 📚Found Family 📚Forced Proximity 📚Magic 📚Bonded Animals 📚Miscommunication Trope (done well)
5⭐️s from me because I absolutely ate this book up and couldn’t put it down! If there’s anything you take from this review, please let it be to start reading the series.
K.J. Altair has absolutely done it again with Trials of Embers and Trust book two in The Flameborn Series. I enjoyed it right from the start. The twists and turns continued. Some secrets were revealed and some answers were given. The tension and heat between the FMC Ara and the MMC Tate kept me on the edge of my seat. This book introduces the Trials and let me tell you there are some nail biting and jaw dropping moments. There is a need for tissues at one point in book two, so be forewarned. A definite 5 star read! I look forward to book three in 2026.
Trials of Embers and Trust coming September 30th, 2025!
Thank you to K.J. Altair for the opportunity to be a member of your ARC Team again.
Wow. Just, wow. After loving the first one, I absolutely devoured this book. It has everything you could want. Romance? Check. Angst and longing? Double check. A heart pounding ending? 100% check. Continuing Ara and Tate's story was so satisfying. The pacing is great, not lingering on the bridge points and really giving all the goods on the action filled pieces. The trials were amazing and that ending? Incredible. I will say, Ms Altair tore my heart out and stomped on it at one point. I'm not entirely sure how I'm supposed to survive until the next book in 2026!
I loved reading more of Tate and Ara’s story. This is a great sequel filled with tension, angst and more world building. I loved the trials and learning more about their magic. Can’t wait for the third book now! I read this as an arc and am deeply appreciative.
Action packed, heart pounding, love inspired romantasy that you will not want to put down! Twists and turns, lies and deceptions, miscommunication and trust, yearning and spice, IT HAS IT ALL!
Ara finds herself in the palace with the prince, Tate's or should I say Alec's brother, and he is going to marry her, if only to make his brother miserable.
Ara is wanting to go back to the Academy and finish out and hopefully try to help Tate in the flight games while simultaneously trying to figure out how to escape her fiancé, how to wield her magic, and more about the mist people.
Feathers of Ash and Hope was my first (and so far only) 6 star read of the year, but this was the perfect sequel. I cannot praise K.J. Altair enough on these books! I love them so much! I could have finished this book in one day, but I didn't want to finish it so I kept forcing myself to put it down. Finally I had to know what happens. I loved how things tied up some at the end and I'm am dying to know what happens!!
Forced proximity? Check. Magical Creatures? Check. Funny banter? Check, CHECK. I was so excited for this book. If you enjoyed Fourth Wing you’ll eat this up. Ara is finding strength in her powers and maneuvering through trials and training while someone is trying to kill her, who and why will surprise you. Tate is a possessive MMC who will do anything for Ara, even when they can’t see eye to eye. New characters and plots are springing up from everywhere and I cannot wait to pick up the 3rd book. Just like the first one this book ended on a cliff hanger that will have you reeling on what’s to come next.
This series is your next series to read. It is AMAZING. This book is everything I hoped and more following the first, and I’m going to be very impatiently waiting for book 3 now. I will recommend this to anyone and everyone that likes to read fantasy (or anything!) It has everything: trials, magic, romance, politics and schemes, magical creatures, bonded creatures—and it does it all together SO WELL. honestly after reading these two books I think I will officially be reading anything that KJ Altair touches. I love her characters and I love this story. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here because, yet again, this book ends at a cliffhanger that I cannot physically handle. READ THIS SERIES EVERYONE
I’m obsessed! This series just gets better and better.
Trials of Embers and Trust is book 2 in the Flameborn series and it’s everything I wanted in a sequel and more.
Ara and Tate took me on an emotional (and sometimes frustrating) journey but I loved seeing their character growth as their bond was tested by secrets, misunderstandings, betrayal and impossible choices.
The mix of cursed magic, dangerous trials and political intrigue kept me coming back for more, but what really makes this book shine, is the side characters. Their friends and allies all add so much depth to the story, bringing humour, loyalty and heart that made the world feel alive.
I laughed, I cried and I couldn’t put it down. I don’t know how I’m going to survive the wait for book 3.
HOLY FREAKING HANNAH! Loved it!!! Loved the families, friendships, games and plot twists. I can’t wait for book 3! Not only will I own the paperback copies of these books, I will also be buying the special edition hardcovers (I’m manifesting here…) as shelf trophies if/when they are released!
Thank you K.J. Altair, the publishers and BookFunnel for an eARC of this book! I was thrilled to receive it!
This was received as an ARC in exchange for an honest review — thank you K.J. Altair for the gifted eARC.
Book: Trials of Embers and Trust Series: Flameborn (#2) Genre: Fantasy Romance Rating: 5⭐
5/5 Relationships 5/5 Characters 5/5 Plot 3🌶
*:✿˚⋆ SPOILER FREE REVIEW *:✿˚⋆
I went into this book with high expectations after loving Flameborn #1: FoAaH—and it absolutely did not disappoint. Trials of Ember and Trust doesn’t pick up exactly where FoAaH left off, but close enough that the transition feels seamless. With clear timeline references, I never once felt lost as the story continued.
The pacing mirrors the first book: steady, with a few time jumps here and there. Thankfully, the author always provides enough context to keep you anchored. Plot-wise, this installment delivers on many of the lingering questions—about the mist, Ara’s powers and curse, her past, and even the reasons behind her betrothal.
Now, about the romance—yes, there is a miscommunication trope. Normally, I hate this, but honestly? It didn’t make me want to throw the book across the room (which is saying a lot). It comes up early and lasts until about the midway point, but it’s handled with just enough angst and yearning to keep me invested. Since the story is told in dual POV, we see both sides of the longing, which makes it more bearable—and even worthwhile. By the end, I truly believed their relationship had gained a stronger foundation, one that could withstand whatever’s ahead.
Where things felt a little underdeveloped for me was with the side characters. I would have loved deeper insight into their personalities, histories, and dynamics. That said, the friendships between the MCs and secondary characters do get more focus this time, with plenty of banter and camaraderie. Plus, there are hints of 1–2 side romances, and I’m already obsessed with at least one of them—I can’t wait to see where those threads go.
I also appreciated the expanded worldbuilding. We weren’t confined at the academy the entire time, which helped avoid a stagnant setting. The exploration of the map added balance and freshness to the narrative while still keeping the academy’s presence in play.
The book ends on a gentle cliffhanger—enough to leave you eager for the next installment, but not the kind that makes you want to hurl your Kindle at the wall or stare into the void for hours. It teases just enough intrigue to keep you hooked without the stress of an intense, heart-pounding ending.
Overall, this series continues to impress me. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’d read anything KJ writes. I can’t wait to see how the rest of this story unfolds!
and Trust. This book is everything I crave in a fantasy read—heart-pounding action, layered characters, and a world so vivid it feels like I’ve lived there for years. From the very first page, the prose pulls you in with a lyrical quality that balances beauty with razor-sharp tension. What sets this story apart is the seamless weaving of high-stakes trials with deeply human emotions. The “embers” aren’t just about fire—they’re about resilience, transformation, and the spark of hope that refuses to die even when everything seems lost. The “trust” element is equally powerful, exploring loyalty, betrayal, and the fragile bonds that hold people together when tested under impossible circumstances. Every chapter feels like a choice between light and shadow, and I found myself holding my breath more than once. The characters are the true triumph here. They’re not archetypes or placeholders—they’re raw, flawed, and achingly real. Their growth feels earned, their struggles deeply relatable even in a fantastical setting. I found myself torn between racing ahead to see what happened next and slowing down just to savor the dialogue and inner battles. World-building is another masterstroke. Altair gives us a landscape brimming with atmosphere—smoldering ruins, flickers of magic, dangerous trials that test body and soul—and yet nothing feels overwhelming or bloated. Every detail has purpose. Every place feels alive. And the pacing? Flawless. There are no wasted chapters, no filler—just a steady rhythm that alternates between blistering action sequences and intimate, soul-searching moments. The ending left me both satisfied and hungry for whatever comes next, which is exactly how I want to feel when I turn the last page. KJ Altair’s Trials of Embers and Trust isn’t just a book—it’s an experience. It’s the kind of story that lingers in your bones, makes you rethink what it means to endure, to believe, and to trust. If you’re looking for a fantasy novel that hits all the right notes—emotional depth, breathtaking stakes, and characters you’ll never forget—this is it. ✨ Beyond five stars. Absolute perfection.
Ara is drowning in secrets, schemes, and a gift that burns too hot to control, while Tate’s past refuses to stay buried. As his brother’s coronation nears and deadly trials loom, their bond, already tangled in forbidden desire and shifting allegiances, is pushed to its limits. But with betrayal and revenge on the horizon, they must decide where their loyalty truly lies.
After the incredible first book, I was desperate for this second instalment, and it did not disappoint. Packed with secrets (and the miscommunication that comes with them, but so well done), royal intrigue, tension, angst, yearning, and betrayal, this book had me hooked. The action was relentless, with truly deadly and unique trials that kept me on the edge of my seat. And Solaris regenerating after going up in flames? The phoenix’s self-consciousness was a moment of dark humour in the midst of a terrible, deadly situation. We also got to learn more about the Titans and what lurks within the mists, as well as Ara’s cursed magic. I need more of this in the next book!
Ara is tough, capable, and fierce, a recklessly good climber who fights to defend those she loves and those she feels have been wronged. Meanwhile, Tate, a Centurion with healing powers, is adorably obsessed and does everything he can to prove she’s it for him. The scorchingly beautiful heated scenes between them were perfection.
This is one of my favourite romantasy series ever!
Thanks to K.J. Altair for the ARC. I’m honoured to be part of their ARC team. All thoughts are my honest opinion.
This book is sooooo much better than the first one!!!! The second book is definitely more faster to read because there are so many more plots, more characters, more action, more banter, more yearning, omg, more everything. I don’t know how K.J Altair did it, but this book was definitely a page turner with so much political intrigue, plot twists, characters showing more of their powers and personalities, more villains, and the SECRETS. Omg, the freaking secrets in this book get so intense. This was such an emotional rollercoaster page after page and the banter between Ara and Tate is sooooo good. To be honest, for the first 60% of the book, Ara’s character was killing me. I thought her to be so childish, bratty and naive but all of that changes towards the end of the book where she gets to be the bad ass FMC she is. Amazing books, amazing author that I love, and amazing writing. Loved reading this amazing adventure and thanks to K.J for letting me be an arc reader.
These books need to be physically on my bookshelf!!!
5⭐️’s This book completely swept me away!! As the second book in the series after Feathers of Ash and Hope, I loved it even more than the first. Tate and Ara’s story absolutely wrecked me! The tension, angst and the longing had me hooked from start to finish. Their relationship carries so much emotional depth and struggles and it made every scene between them unforgettable.
Secrets, twists and reveals kept me on my toes the entire time. The world building and felt a lot stronger in this book and stakes the added stakes made it impossible to put down.
Now I’m DESPERATE for book three, I need it like yesterday!!! Huge thanks to K.J. Altair for the ARC! It had the perfect mix of tension, romance and magic that I couldn’t get enough of.
I did not want this to end — but at the same time, I couldn’t stop reading!!! 😭🔥 The pacing, the tension, the emotion — everything was perfection.
I can’t believe it ended on that cliffhanger… KJ Altair, what have you done to me?! I need book 3 now!!!
I absolutely adore Ara — she’s such a sassy, badass FMC, and Tate… 🥵💙 I love him so much. And King Frederick? He seriously needs to get his dues (and fast 😤).
Those scenes in the last trial were epic! My heart was racing the entire time. This series just keeps getting better and better — I’m completely obsessed!

I enjoyed the first book in this series and was happy to get to read the second a bit early! It’s a great follow up to the first novel. I enjoyed learning more about the backstories of the main characters. Lots of action throughout the book which kept the pace up and kept me reading. It really picked up through the last half with the games and the ending was great (it is a cliffhanger if that matters to anyone). Definitely recommend to anyone who enjoyed fourth wing or similar books.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Trials of Embers and Trust (Flameborn #2) ARC
I could not wait to dive into book two of the Flameborn series, and it definitely delivered on the fast pace and late-night page-turning vibes. The tension, the magic, the high-stakes trials, it all pulled me right back into Ara and Tate’s world.
That said, I did struggle with the distance between Ara and Tate for much of the first half of the book. After everything they went through in book one, Ara’s anger felt stretched out and a little unrealistic, which made it hard to get behind at times. Luckily, once that hurdle passed, the story found its rhythm again. Ara truly steps into her role as the FMC she’s meant to be, and with Tate back by her side, the world feels “right” again.
The magic in this installment really comes alive, and the games with the goddess added such a wicked, twisty edge that I loved. The political intrigue, shifting allegiances, and constant sense of danger kept me hooked. And yes, it ends on a cliffhanger, but not one that rips your heart out. Instead, it leaves you hungry for more (and I am absolutely dying to get my hands on book three already). Bring on the Mist!!
A fantastic continuation of the series, with all the simmering tension, forbidden love, and magical stakes I was hoping for. 100% Recommendations Coming From Me.
I am addicted to K.J’s writing. That’s it. That’s the review.
No but seriously, this book just amped up all the stakes. So much was happening, so many secrets, hidden agendas and pieces moving around the board. I love trying to figure out what happens and then see if I’m right, but there were so many plates in the air, so many intertwining threads which were delicious and threw me off my game! I love that about K. J’s writing! She truly puts an incredible, unique spin on so many popular themes and tropes, making them refreshing and unpredictable! I CANNOT wait for book 3. I feel a bit like a junkie 😅😅
Thank you so so much to K. J. Altair for an early copy, all thoughts are my own!
First, I want Frederick to have a painful death. Also, while I might want to throttle Ara and Tate through the first half of this book, it is so interesting to see the cracks in the stubbornness appear as they happen. The threats, coercion, strength, friendships, battles, and love are all so well written that it is hard to put the book down. If only I didn’t need sleep at some point, or have kids, I would have read it all in one go. As it is, it took me 3 days, and I am already pining for book 3!
I love reading this series. With book one and now with this book after finishing it, I really want to go back and reread the story. Book one built the world, but book two is all relationships, plot twists, political intrigue, deadly trials, and yearning.
There is such good banter not just between Ara and Tate but also between many of the side characters. The relationships between all the characters really developed but don't get too attached to any of them.
Secrets! There are so many secrets kept and finally revealed. I am also amazed that KJ Altair was able to do the miscommunication trope, my most despised trope, without me wanting to put the book down. Don't worry too much. It is definitely cleared up by the end of this book.
Thank you KJ Altair for allowing me to read an ARC of this book!
🗡 Dual POV 🗡 Deadly Trials 🗡 Forbidden Love 🗡 Found Family 🗡 Forced Proximity 🗡 Magic 🗡 Bonded Animals 🗡 Miscommunication (done well)
No one will ever understand the amount of excitement I had when I got the message about this book being ready to read. The first book was already everything to me this one just pushed it over the edge. My sweet baby Tate has my whole heart. I’m not gonna lie I was ready to fight Ara for my man. But as much as she sometimes irritates me I do love my girl. Her strength and smarts are unmatched to any other character. So glad to finally have such a powerful FMC. I will never get over the ending but it has left me fiening for the next book.
Thank you for giving me the ARC. Woah. I can honestly say I wasn't expecting that. Another cliffhanger but with this one I can wait. I love this books. The way you fight for what you love and what is right. This is not a series to miss. 5/5 10/10 I loved this book and can't wait for the next one.
Omg! Yes! This amazing author has done it again! I started this book and hated having to put it down. This story just pulls you in right away following book 1. As I read I was mad, I laughed, and cried. All of these emotions were amazing and made the story so much better! This is book 2 of the Flameborn series where we continue to follow Tate and Ara on their incredible journey! And I promise you do not want to miss out on this story for even a second!
KJ has done it again with a beautifully crafted and thrilling second installment of the Flameborn series!
Now that Ara (barely) survived academy and the Picking, can her relationship with Tate survive now that (some) their secrets have been revealed?
The banter. The yearning. The action and adventure. The found family. The betrayals and deceit. The competitive trials. This story has most definitely got me in a chokehold, I could not put it down!
I love how unique the world and story you’ve built is KJ, and cannot wait to see where it goes from here! You do not want to sleep on this series, I promise it is more than worth every second spent reading!!
Thank you to KJ for choosing me to be an arc reader again in exchange for my honest review!

I was so excited to dive into book 2 and it did not disappoint.
The main focus is learning the secrets of the Mist and winning the Flight Trials in order to gain a favor from a Goddess.
Learning about the Mist was magical and heart warming and I can’t wait for everyone to figure out who the Titans are.
The Flight Trials are insane in all the best ways. My heart did get broken during the trials and I have yet to recover.
Ara and Tate go through a lot in this book. Ara feels betrayed, isolated, and at times hopeless. Tate feels like all control is slipping and that he has no way out of a promise he made years ago. Ara and Tate go through some thick angst and fight their true desires..both thinking they are doing it for the right reason. The betrayals that come to light in this book had me audibly gasping.
All of the side characters…which I am now calling main characters as well..considering the massive roles they play in this book …are phenomenal. They are the perfect example of a Found Family. Their banter is great but their loyalty and courage is even better.
The found family does not take away from Ara’s true family. I LOVE her brothers and Sloan. We learn more about them and some of their secrets in this book. I am hoping Sloan gets a major role in book 3.
The book ends with a few unanswered questions and a cliffhanger. I'll be on high alert when the release date for book 3 is announced.
