John MacAlister and his sidekick robot, Alvis, are ready for the next adventure when the Star Corps calls—with his ex-girlfriend on the line. A colonel has gone rogue, fleeing to a tidally locked planet controlled by a powerful criminal syndicate with galactic ambitions. Addicted to glowtabs and on the edge of collapse, the colonel’s purpose is unknown, what they do know he won’t survive long.

When John arrives on Haka, the mission changes. The truth behind how the drug is made is bigger—and more dangerous—than anyone expected. Worse, they’re now being chased by Helion Deepcore’s vindictive criminal boss and dealing with a traitorous figure from John’s past.

To finish the job, he’ll have to rely on a strung-out colonel, a criminal hacker, and Alvis, who’s facing a crisis at the worst possible time that could compromise everything.

Entertaining new adventure - with a little twist.

The newest episode of this ongoing buddy comedy delivers the kind of banter-y action adventure I’ve come to expect from the series. John and Alvis are facing yet another “mission: impossible,” only this time with a bit of a role reversal: for once, John needs to be the adult in the room. And boy, is it fun to watch him deal with an increasingly unpredictable and *gasp* adventure-craving Alvis, who hasn’t been quite himself since their last mission.

More, please?

This is a good follow up to the previous volumes. Good story, well fleshed out characters and although not quite as inventive as Ghost Notes, it is solid and entertaining (after all what more do you want in a book?).
I can thoroughly recommend all of the books in this series as they are all entertaining and good fun.

Their story continues to get better and better! Really enjoying the discussions between everyone, and character development. Very interesting plot, won't give it away but a nice continuation of their story. Definitely a recommended read!

Get ready for adventure, Timmy!

The galaxy's favorite pair of adventurers-slash-bestest-buddies return in "Bounty Backbeat", Tom Dell'Aringa's fourth full-length novel in this wonderful series. And just as we've seen in every instalment so fair, human (+/-) and ex-Star Corps officer John MacAlister and his loyal (+/---) artie Alvis are back to their old tricks again. Yes, in no time at all since we last left them after their previous exploits, they find themselves once again totally broke and needing any job that might fall in their collective laps. So you know we're in for a crazy time full of witty banter, offensive comments, and more.

This was so predictable it doesn’t even register as new data.

But wait, what's this? There's something not quite the same about the banter, is there? No, it's not John, who is still pretty much the cowboy-hat-lovin', whiskey-chuggin', and jazz-afficianado we've come to know and … tolerate. Mostly. No, but it's Alvis that seems to be acting… funny? Not funny ha ha -though to be fair his usual zingers still are sharp as a laser pistol - but there is definitely something off this time around. Could our favorite robotesque friend with the IQ of a million Einsteins be broken? Or is something more nefarious going on? And what is up with the sudden compulsion to use ancient teenage slang? Those are called teasers friends, but you'll have to dive in on your own to find out more!

My neurons are decaying from the extreme tediousness of this conversation.

Speaking of nefarity, which may or may not be a word depending on how willing you are to operate in the gray areas of basic vocabulary (remember that reference!), one of the best parts of these tales that Dell'Aringa always delivers is that despite our basic buddy system - valid on dry land or in liquid environments! - and even the presence of folks we've met in the past, we always find ourselves in a new and exciting environment! And this time is no different as a great deal of this tale takes place on the tidally locked planet named Ekaphos just outside the Carthis Belt.

Don’t get killed yet. We’ve only just got here.

Now I realize one or two of you may need a bit of a refresher on what that exactly means (or you could just sit there like I did and mumble "huh?" to yourself over and over), but suffice to say here that this is a planet operating outside the Galactic Union and any of their other rivals we've met to date. The fact that it's home to a criminal organization trying to grow their security forces (read: military) and other assets into a viable player in universal affairs is no small factor either. As kids like to say these days (do they?), things are about to get … complicated! Let's just say you'll understand why our team is quick to realize they’ve never been up against a more capable opponent before, one that is, quote, breaking every law and treaty known to humanity, remembering that, yes Virginia "humanity sucks."

They’re building an empire the old way. One system at a time.

So before we know it, there's trouble on Mars, there's trouble on Ekaphos, there's ex-girlfriend(s) popping up on screens and even criminals with admittedly nice bottoms showing up that we met while reality was going all wonky in the last episode ("What is it with you and your ass?"). And to say that John and Alvis quickly get stuck in the mire of all that happening essentially within a few parsecs of each other (it is a unit of time!), well, by now we're used to that. Particularly once Georgio also sticks his sweaty and no doubt bulbous nose into things because favors don't come cheap! Needless to say, what once seemed a nigh-impossible task turns into a monumental clusterfudge of, yes, you guessed it, galactic proportions. And yes, there's even more than a little danger to John's newest hat along the way, too.

You stupid feet-eaters are going to get me killed!

But as these books have always managed to accomplish despite our heroes' best efforts is that quickly we begin to learn just how bad the bad guys are and how noble some of those that we might have questioned earlier will wind up being. Also as usual, we get some really exciting hardcore sci-fi included all this, especially once we learn just what "tidally locked" implies and naturally of course the identities of our surprise players. Or as per usual again, the identities of our surprise victims who did nothing whatsoever to deserve their fate. And I know the action takes place over several days in this story - one only has to watch the deterioration to Colonel Rafael 'Raf' Downing to truly feel the time passage as both the pain of his own withdrawal, plus the knowledge that his wife shares the same fate - just gives even more gravitas to this overall mission.

You do the best with what the universe gives you.

Needless to say, this latest chapter in what I hope will be a long series is as equally breath-taking if not more so that the initial three offers. This time things have a kind of mysterious, noirish grittiness to them than they have since perhaps the first book - where gritty now implies a hardcore crime element - plus lots of fresh garbage in many key scenes (just trust me here) - whereas in "Blanchland Blues" we naturally had that AND tons of sand to deal with. Plus there's always that element of the unknown that this newest adventure offers, especially when it becomes clear that JOHN may in fact be the most logical and/or most rational one in the team! You know that can't be good! But it's an exciting ending that will no doubt also then contribute to the on-going lore and whatever new surprises await us next time! Further comments about nice derrieres aside naturally…

I am not not not an appliance!

My thanks to the author for an early copy of this book during the review process. Kindly note that some quotes may have changed slightly or even potentially been blasted into alternate dimensions. Gods know I feel that way sometimes!

John MacAlister switches roles with Alvis, his robot assistant - 5 stars

John MacAlister has separated from the Star Corps and his always-logical robot have accepted an offer they could not refuse - a job to bring back a rouge Star Corps Colonel. Colonel Rafel Downing has been compromised by an addictive drug. Once having accepted a single tablet of the drug in a social setting, a complete addiction is instantly established. The Colonel was "recruited" to help importing more of the drug to weaken the United Coalition forces.

The role normally played by Alvis as a serious and logical thinker fell to John. John has seldom planned and carefully executed any plan except when he in a game-like training simulation. He just wanted to be good but not willing to be exceptional. In "Bounty Backbeat", Alvis openly pined for adventure and ways to expand his experience. He spoke in jive talk of the 21st century, calling his colleagues "bro" and wanting to be "cool". While John has not given up his fondness for jazz and ostentatious cowboy hats (because John considers himself a space cowboy), the pair still depends on the other's skills until it becomes obvious that Alvis has lost some major restraints.

John accepted an assignment as a bounty hunter working unofficially for the Star Corps.. People on a small asteroid named Ekaphos, developed an extremely profitable drug called "Luminal Essence". All that John and Alvis had to do is to go to the enemy's territory, recover a prisoner or two, and interrupt a profitable drug business. John's earnestness allows him to ignore social structures. John simply jumps into new situations without trepidation and impulsively does whatever he thinks is the right thing. That is, until Alvis takes on the role of looking for information (and neural excitement) by walking into a bar and clearing tables as if no one would notice an autonomous robot without a controlling human in close proximity.

As in previous adventures, many seat-of-the-pants decisions barely work out. In Helion on the asteroid Ekaphos, the local authorities are not amused and the adventure begins in earnest. Voss Jarek, the man responsible for the addictive drug development and distribution, has tasked his underlings to find and eliminate John MacAlister. When he started his bounty hunting task, John only wanted to find out more about the drug traffickers. John learned that there was an underground leader identified as the Ghost. John met up with the "Ghost" and was surprised to learn that he had crossed paths with her previously on Mars. Partnering with Shenzi (AKA the Ghost), was fortuitous as Shenzi was an accomplished hacker.

When the source of the production of the addictive substance was located, new opportunities were presented for mayhem and a bit more bloodletting. Chase scenes and clever cat and mouse chases including hiding is a trash truck kept the excitement high. John's signature cowboy hat had to be discarded. Alvis' desire for adventure led to risk and a realization that Alvis was definitely no longer the mild-mannered robot that he had previously been. I encourage you to read Bounty Backbeat to discover a new slice of the John and Alvis relationship ... and see how my favorite space cowboy upped his game.

Good morning Mr. MacAllister. The Helion Crime Syndicate or HCS has been has been smuggling a highly addictive and fatal drug called Luminal Essence, also known as “Glowtabs”, throughout the Galactic Union by addicting high ranking LEO’s, politicians, and Star Corps officers along with their spouses to this insidious drug for leverage. There is currently no known cure, and addicts who do not get the glowtabs in a timely manner will die. Taking the drug is just as fatal, just over a much longer timeframe. This man, Colonel Rafael Downing, has gone AWOL and is believed to be the Helion Rift Deepcore, in the city of Haka on the planet Ekaphos. Star Corps has recently learned the Colonel Downing has been compromised by both the HCS and Luminal Essence. His position in Star Corps allowed him to grant safe passage to ships belonging to the Helion across the GU. Colonel Downing also knows who else in and out of the Star Corps is compromised. Helion is trying to become a major player in the region, by taking over systems one system at a time. They even have a large “Security Force” to prevent anyone from asking too many questions about their activities. Star Corps cannot invade the Helion Rift Deepcore at this time due to not having evidence of their illegal activities and the potential political blowback.
Your mission: Go to Ekaphos, bring back Colonel Dowing alive and find the evidence needed to take down the Helion Crime Syndicate. Should you or Alvis be caught or killed, the Star Corps will disavow any knowledge of your actions. Good luck John. (This sounded so much better in my head than it came out in written form.)
John MacAllister likes to think of himself as a Space Cowboy, but he is no gangster of love. Bounty Backbeat is the 4th book in the John and Alvis Sessions books. A dishonorably discharged (twice!) Star Corps pilot, John and his artie Alvis roam the endless bounds of space just trying to make a living. He has failed as a smuggler as he is always trying to do the right thing, even though by doing so he costs himself a lot of money, and sometimes, friends.
This book is well written and enjoyable to read. Anyone who enjoys space opera will like it. I had purchased the first three books in the series and read them prior to reading this one. I did that as I am a completist. I think it is a worthy addition to the series, and I look forward to the next adventure of John and Alvis. I am voluntarily leaving a review after receiving a free copy of this book. I look forward to and eagerly await Tom’s next book!

Once again John and Alvis reluctantly get pulled into another adventure, the most dangerous yet.  One that is propelled along by a personal request for help from John's ex-girlfriend, and we all know John can never say no to the Ladies.  However this time Alvis 'be acting different'.  Alvis appears to be broken like he's gone through a personality change, and starts calling John "Bro" like he's down with the cool kids.

Things get serious when John acquires his targets and an old ally helps him infiltrate the drug baron's empire to find out exactly how the narcotics are being made, to horrifying effect.

John be Luke Skywalkin' on his haters when the villains catch up with them, but The Force training he receives is not done by a little green pointy eared alien.

John and Alvis are back where they belong, in the thick of it. This time though, because of their last escapade, Alvis has changed: he is not just a straight man anymore, he is cranky and shoots more from the hip than does John. The growth of Alvis is nerve-racking and I reckon that I should not get so caught up in such characters!

Does the Deep care what you want? It must for these two to survive the telling of this story. John and Alvis move more to the genre of Butch and the Sundance Kid this time around. Very well done story.

Looking forward to the next tale. By the way, I got an ARC of this but only because I cannot buy it yet!

Dell'Aringa has done it again, with the fourth book in this highly entertaining series.
Bounty Backbeat takes the duo of John and Alvis on a dangerous journey with the pair taking on a combination of jobs that has a potential payout big enough to stop them going into debt, again. Recover a rogue colonel doped up on a new and dangerous drug, try to find out the source of the drug, uncover details of the operation of a criminal organization with big plans, and grab a debtor while they're there...

What could possibly go wrong? Well, for one, Alvis isn't behaving his usual self, and it's causing more than a few problems. But it's these problems that lets our dynamic duo evolve in some surprising directions.

it is another fun and exciting story . A sharp witted character returns and is key support for the mission.Alvis glitches. It is a nice twist and certainly brought a bit of humor and concern to me as the reader.

Another fabulous tale of the space cowboy! This story has a lot of meat on it and plenty of action. You will enjoy it just as I have already. Poor Artie has severe mental issues in this story which has our cowboy worried while he fights back at a most despicable villain.
