Wolfehound by Kathryn Le Veque is more than the continuation of a tradition, it is destined to be a classic, like The Wofe before it, with its classic characters William de Wolfe and his eventual wife, Jordan. Years earlier William had made the decision to work around the king’s order to have the infant daughter, of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the defeated Welsh king, sent to a convent to live out her life, instead substituting a peasant girl to fill that role and call the girl, Gwenllian. The child had not only royal Welsh blood, but English as well, as her mother had been the daughter of King John. William thought the best revenge on the man whose soldiers had killed his son, was for her to marry an Englishman and dilute his blood to nothing. Everything was fine for many years until a dying soldier, who had been part of the deception, decided to get this information off his chest and confessed to a priest who went straight to the Archbishop of Canterbury with his story. After much consideration, The Archbishop, not a fan of the king, decided to use his information to ingratiate himself to the man. Thus began the hunt. Turns out the young woman was betrothed to a grandson of William de Wolfe, and like his grandfather, allowed no one to hurt the ones he loved.
It was so good to see William and Paris and Kieran again. Even Jordan appeared in the present time, ninety years old, as she came to attend the wedding of her beloved William’s illegitimate grandson. William was not normally a vengeful man, but the loss of this son was a grief beyond bearing and he was looking for vengeance. Plus, the woman who was to adopt the baby had lost her son recently and she could not put the baby down. William’s heart saw and responded. As always, wonderful characters and a great story. I could not ask for more from the de Wolfe legacy. As a devout fan, I loved it.
