This is book two of the Manhattan Bossholes series and this time it is the turn of Nana Dee’s Lost Boy, Aiden Callihan, to find love in this second chance romance, as he meets his first love, Cora Newport, but doesn’t even recognise her! Not a great start. Cora was broken hearted when Aiden broke up with her suddenly and without any reason, whilst they were in high school. He was two years older, so left to go to college, where he met the rest of the men known as the Lost Boys, nicknamed by one of his roommates, Trent’s Nana Dee, who looked after them all on holidays when they couldn’t get home. He and his classmates produced a best seller item during their course and sold it for millions. Aiden broke up with his next girlfriend around that time and it was as he wallowed in self-pity and alcohol, that he came up with the idea for Elixir, which has become a very profitable company. Cora had rebound into a relationship with Levi, whilst still at high school, and had been with him for fifteen years, before he came home from a work trip and told her he had fallen in love with someone and packed up his belongings and just left! She was left unable to afford their apartment on her own and had to move in with her best friend Jennifer. Jennifer is a chef who is really enthusiastic about food but has seemed down in the dumps recently. Cora didn’t manage to go to college due to a family death and has been working as a bartender and a secret mixologist, known as the Masked Mixer, doing competitions and lots of online videos. She is hoping to one day open her own speakeasy, with a literary emphasis.
She is at a cocktail contest with her friend Jennifer, in her guise as the Mixed Mixer, when the Cocktail King, Aiden Calihan, comes into the bar with a following of influencers and he heads right for her table in between rounds. He doesn’t recognise her, even after she replies to him when he offers her a special ten year old reserve bottle of Elixir. He wants her to use it in the next round of the competition and isn’t exactly happy when she refuses to accept it! The night doesn’t go well for Aiden, and he is caught by the influencers he invited, almost fighting with her. Not a good look. Cora hoped wining the competition might bring her some new chances and maybe even some sponsorship deals. Jennifer tells her of an offer from her friend Allie, who works with a large drinks company and wants to meet her. Allie can’t go into details until Cora signs a Non-Disclosure Agreement, but once she has, it seems this would be the ideal job for her, a chance to come up with a whole line of non-alcoholic cocktails to go along with the company’s alcoholic line. The meeting goes well until she spots the name of the company on the paperwork, then worse when Aiden walks in. He is shocked to find to the Masked Mixer is Cora and it brings back memories of how good the two of them were in high school. But he has turned himself away from love after his last relationship also ended in a manner where he didn’t like his own reaction and what he had become! He tries to offer her more money, thinking that is all she must want, and it won’t make much of a difference to his pocket, no matter how much she wants. All he wants is her expertise and he will pay anything to get it!
When he walks into the meeting, she is raring to leave and get away from him, no matter how much Allie tries to get her to stay and discuss the deal. Aiden is being just as rude and arrogant as he was the previous night. The pay Allie shows her would be way more than she is currently earning and allow her to open her speakeasy sooner! Aiden’s arrogance has him double it, but it is only Allie chasing after her and telling her about the top of the line lab and the use of all the materials she could want to do her videos there in her own time, finally sways her. She ends up at his company and meets the team who will be working with hr, but she is the lead and can create anything she wants! The ultimate job for a mixologist and will lead to so many more offers when she is done. She only agrees to sign up until the launch, but however much she thought she could avoid him, it soon turns out both of them still have feelings for the other. Now, she just has to worry whether he will let her down again or not, and whether he will break her heart again. The relationship really starts when her ex-Levi turns up trying to win her back and Cora introduces Aiden as her boyfriend, to get rid of him. Being pulled back to finalise their school reunion at the last moment, brings back memories of their first love. The chemistry between Aiden and Cora is off the charts and while they don’t advertise it at work, everyone can tell how good they are together. Aiden’s method of dealing with Cora’s ex seem to blow up in his face and make him look at how it makes him act, leaving him to make a decision that may well break Cora for good!
Aiden needs to grow up emotionally and not just close himself off when serious emotions are involved. He sees himself reacting as he did previously and linked this to his relationships at the time, but really needs to listen to his father and how to grow his ability to control his emotions in such situations. He certainly has a lot to do to get yet another chance with Cora and make up for hurting her. I loved where Cora and Jennifer ended up and how they managed to change both of their dreams to combine with another, for a perfect mix of talents! Also, the lesson learnt that money alone doesn’t help when it comes to a meaningful apology, which many men struggle to realise. Nice to see Dominic finally finding joy with his situation with his daughter Hailey, after his ex-wife milked him for everything she could in their divorce.
