The Soulmate Strategy: My Imperfect Plan to Conquer Heartbreak and Find True Love

Rate this book
A soul-searching LGBTQ memoir about one woman’s attempt to plan her way to happily ever after—only to realize that healing, self-discovery, and love happen in their own time.

Days after Corey’s breakup, a photo of her ex wrapped in the arms of another woman goes viral on Facebook. Confronted with this gleeful boast about “happily ever after,” Corey, a forty-something-year-old lesbian, decides that she can’t live in a state of perpetual loneliness, plagued with the burden of her own failure in finding happiness and love.

Armed with her meticulously crafted checklist, Corey embarks on mission to heal, move on, and find “the one.” But no matter how many items she checks off her list, or how faithfully she follows the sage wisdom of psychics, her breakup coach, and the legendary rapper Eminem, her hope in finding her one true love begins to fade away—until she’s suddenly torn between two.

Now, with her heart unexpectedly on the line, Corey must find out what she really wants—and where her true happiness lies.

Thank you to Book Sparks and the author for the advanced reader copy of this memoir.

I went into this expecting a real life Sex in the City type book, but this falls more into the self-help category.

Corey takes you on her journey from a traumatic breakup to her eventual healing. She started her journey wanting to control every aspect of her grief in order to rush the healing and find her soulmate by any means necessary. She makes lists, spreadsheets and plans. She visits therapists, relationship coaches, reiki specialists and psychics. She gets on the dating apps and leans on her friendships for support until she eventually learns that she needs to let go of some of that control in order to really heal and eventually find her person. Corey lays out everything that worked for her and didn't so that if you are also in this situation, you have not only a starting point for recovery but many possible resources.

While this book wasn't for me (I am the farthest from a control freak I think you can get), I can see many people finding this helpful. Anyone that likes to make lists and plans and is also going through a break up will definitely relate to Corey's journey.

There were a couple nights I stayed up way too late telling myself I could read "just one more chapter." Corey makes this easy by giving us short, bite-sized chapters. Because hiking played such an important role in the book, I like that she opted to use trail names to help the reader keep track of who each person was and their role in her life.

Corey Seemiller's memoir is an entertaining tale of her personal trials and adventures while on the hunt to find her soulmate.

After months of distance leading up to a breakup, Corey knows it's time to move on when she opens Facebook to a photo of her ex with another woman. She immediately begins putting in the work to improve herself to find her own happily ever after, but it turns out, finding your soulmate when you're a lesbian in your 40s is no simple task. As an avid hiker, Corey is familiar with pushing herself and overcoming challenges, and she sets out on a quest to find the "pow, boom, bang" she's looking for.

From Tarot readings to a breakup coach, to energy healing, and soulmate sketches, her search for answers and signs knows no limits. She does her best to manifest her desires and goes on some interesting dates, many of which end awkwardly. Along the way, she learns a lot about herself, makes some friends, and becomes torn when the universe gives her conflicting answers between Birds and Pants (IYKYK). Ultimately, she'd been so focused on following her list that she almost missed the most important piece - being happy.

Her journey couldn't have been easy, and there are parts where I felt a lot of empathy for her struggles. But the memoir's lighthearted tone speaks to who Corey is as a person. From her comical nicknames to the text exchanges with Naked and Afraid, her personality shines through, and I enjoyed following her journey.

My Review:

The Soulmate Strategy… an amazing and beautifully written memoir. Hang tight as Corey takes us through a whirlwind of feelings in this raw and emotional journey in search for her fatepair. Soon after their breakup, a picture of Corey’s ex and her new lover goes viral on facebook. Heartbroken, and in fear that she will "die alone", Corey sets out to not only work on herself, but to find true love as well. From therapy, fostering kittens, jumping from one relationship into another, and tarot readings, we accompany her through a dizzying mix of high and lows and very heartfelt moments. If you haven’t yet, please embark in this worthy journey in search for a soulmate and to mend a broken heart. It will have you shedding a tea or two and laughing out loud at how Corey has a nickname for her significant others.

Thank you to BookSparks and to the Author for this e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

This is a beautiful and compelling novel about heartbreak and searching for "the one". Corey is a 40-something year old navigating heartbreak and she's going out there and trying it all - lists, psychics, dating apps, friends, advice from others - all of it as she searches for "the one". However, she really comes to realize that the cliches are all true. Happiness comes when you let go of having to control it all and really just follow your own path.

I loved this read - her journey felt relatable and the comedic insight added a surprising layer of depth and warmth.
