Stuck in the tenterhooks of uncertainty, an emerging ad-man tries to use all the logic to figure what's happening to him. He believes that he's caused the death of his favourite movie actress in one of the two lives that he claims to be living. And watching all of this happen are a bunch of people from two schools of thought-Physics and Psychiatry. Set in the busy streets, rented flats and packed pubs of Bangalore and Mumbai, here's a thriller that's punctuated with unprecedented happenings, thoughtful words and intertwined twists-an exhibition of how things change in a split second.
A B Chakravorty is an author who prefers to be hailed by his nickname ‘ABC’, that is the short form of his name. By the night, he works for an American IT company, as a Client Service Manager. During the day, he writes for a couple of hours. And on weekends, he jams with random musicians to create melodies and record vocals for his collab project ‘The M Theory’. In his free time he also writes lyrics for independent bands. He lives with his mom in his favourite city, Bangalore. A cricket fan, he has an algorithm in place that he believes can replace the Duckworth-Lewis Method for rain-effected matches. He loves cold coffee in the evenings and can eat chicken anytime any day. You can catch up with him at fb.com/ananyabratac or fb.com/splitsecondnovel.
Churning out a plot with a heady mix of physics & psychology can never be an easy task. But ABC did it and does it quite well. His work reflects the amount of research & hard work that has gone into the making of this book. The book has been paced nicely without too many sub-plots & hence making it a gripping read with the right amount of thrill thrown into it. Much complex information has been broken into the simplest possible manner and that is what I loved in the book (have to admit here that I did struggle a bit with the Physics part). Also the fact that, the author has delved into a genre not too many Indian authors like to foray (esp. in this era of Chetan Bhagat-ish books), was another highlight of the book for me. Though Split Second by A B Chakravorty began on an annoying note (I personally found the author’s dedication disrespectful to the readers), it ended with quite a high punch. The novel kept me hooked on from page one, ran a chill down my spine and made me think quite a bit about the duality of this wonderful thing called life – and then in retrospect I think I will let the dedication bit go. After all not everyone can make this list – Awesome Book Dedications After that digressing introduction, I’ll think get to actually reviewing the novel. Dev works for an ad agency in Bangalore and shares a flat with his with his geeky physics roommate Rakshit. He refers Mahi from his college also to his company and they slowly start spending time together. One morning Dev takes Mahi on her bike to drop her home. While driving down the road, to his complete shock Dev suddenly realizes that Mahi is missing from the backseat! Right from this incident, Dev slowly begins to realize that he could be living in two realities. From then on it is Dev’s journey to unravel the complex dual nature of the moments in his life. And much more is at stake when Dev suspects that he could have harmed someone. Rakshit and Mahi are also there to help him on his journey. It was easy to assume that maybe he just suffered from Multiple Personality Disorder, but it was so much more that that! The author ties all the loose ends and brings the story to a stunning conclusion with a credible explanation to all the dramatic and unbelievable happenings in Dev’s life. But as the novel concludes, there is a moment that makes you go…”Hmmm…what if?!??!” And it kinda felt that the author has left it to the reader’s imagination to decide. It’s up to you to go green or side with red! All in all “Split Second” was a great read from start to finish. Finally a big thank you to the publisher and author for sending me this book. I received the book for free through Goodreads book giveaway.
