The second installment of the Markaum War series by Mel Odom takes these military sci-fi books to the next level, perfect for readers of Jay Allan's Crimson Worlds novels.

He's behind enemy lines. But those lines are shifting beneath his feet.

In the jungles of Makaum, the Terran military is locked in a critical standoff over the planet's resources with the hostile Phrenorians, even as both species maintain uneasy relations with the locals. Tensions could ignite at a moment's notice. And Master Sergeant Frank Sage has just stumbled upon the spark plug.

Alongside trusted Makaum scouts, Sage is running recon on what is possibly an unsanctioned Phrenorian military base.Deep in the savage wilderness, Sage recognizes the renowned Phrenorian warrior arriving on-site: Zhoh GhiCemid. As Sage knows firsthand, Zhoh's presence could mean trouble.

Meanwhile, a mysterious faction of Makaum insurgents breaks the fragile peace with a reckless attack on the Terran base. Before the situation devolves into chaos, Sage must learn to think like his adversaries—devious friends and deadly foes alike.

Apparently Mel Odom doesn't believe in stringing things out. The timeline for this second book is about three days if I remember correctly. And wow, is there a lot of action in those three days. Yeah, there's not a lot of character development, but this isn't a book you read because you want Feels...you read this book because you want to tag along with Sage while he's kicking ass and taking names. That being said, Odom has done a good job with keeping the actual plot interesting and feeding you just enough to keep looking forward to the next release.

Speaking of, thanks to HarperVoyager for the eARC of this book. It's so nice being part of their Super Reader program...free books in return for No B.S. Assessments (aka Honest Reviews) is a great trade, especially when it's books like this series.

The second installment of The Makaum War series sees the scope expand to the political machinations within the Phrenorian camp, as well as the ramifications of the standoff between the Terran Army and the sting tails have affected the Makaum people.

The politics are tense, the consequences dire, and the violence rampant. It is all heading to a boil, and things don't look good for the Terrans.

Add to that a few characters who sow chaos into the mix, and it made for a very enjoyable read.

A few things broke my immersion though. I really enjoyed that Mel let us know more about Sage's background, but the Spanish was not the best. Simple stuff like Montaña, Bogotá, things easily googled or researched, slipped through the editing process. The good news is that it was all fixed for the third novel, so I passed the page on it, so to speak.

Another thing that sometimes would break my immersion was sizes and distances. Sometimes the descriptions in meters were solid, sometimes they felt as if it was originally written in feet, and instead of converting, the word "feet" was merely replaced by "meters", which made the size of some things a bit confusing (if not completely wrong).

That said, even with that, I enjoyed the novel immensely and dug straight into book 3 as soon as I was done.

This series continues to be above-average military sci fi in my estimation. This book has some typical second-book-in-a-trilogy problems, but the overarching plot is moved along slightly, and we get some development of the relationship between our rival main characters.

Just an OK military SciFi book! It was just something to read till I could find something better ! Lots of action and fast paced but there is just something about it's style or lack there of that doesn't do anything special for me ! The ending though leaves you hanging and almost demands a third book in the series to bring the story to a satisfying conclusion !

This book reminded me of one of the later books in the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, it tells a complete story, but doesn't advance the overall story of the series by much.

I'd say it was worth reading, but I had hoped that the story of the series would be moved forward more.

This continues the tale of Master Sgt Frank Sage and the Mekaum War. Well-developed characters, plenty of action, and enough plot to make it all hold together. I'm already looking forward to another in this series!

Pretty good, overall. The world-building is fairly interesting, although the aliens are pretty unimaginative except for the main antagonists. I'm interested to see where the series goes: as far as light, uncomplicated reading goes, it's entertaining.

Nonstop action!

A fast paced follow-up book to the series. Full of action and more of the characters from the first book. A fun read!

Really enjoying this series(?). Plenty of action throughout, characters you can get into easily and care about, and writing that is crisp and engaging. Impatiently waiting for the next installment.
