I was raised in the dark, sharpened into a weapon, and sent into the mortal world to secure my coven’s future. The Southern Kingdom holds secrets, and I will uncover them. But it holds my past—Cage, the man who slaughtered my mother, now stands as the King’s most trusted mage. Stronger. Colder. Alive.
She was supposed to be dead. A ghost from an old life. But Millicent walks these halls, her power coiled like a snake beneath her skin. She is everything I was warned about—ruthless, dangerous, a disciple of a monster.
Yet the North stirs. Something ancient is waking in its shadows. The land rots beneath their touch, the dead do not stay buried. Whispers of unnatural creatures and the undead spread like wildfire. Whatever they are building, it is beyond magic—it is beyond war.
We are enemies. But something darker stirs beneath our feet, a threat neither of us can face alone. The past is a noose tightening around us, dragging old truths to the surface.
I should kill him. I should destroy her. But if we do, we may not survive.
The North is coming.
Author notes The greatest amount of transformation comes from pain and suffering. They are concepts I have been fascinated with ever since I experienced them for so long myself. Life does not filter or censor things for you. There is no closing a door when bad things happen to you. You must stand there and bare it. Just as life does not shelter you, I will not. This is why this tale will be so violating and hard to digest, because that is how it is intended to be. When you found yourself needing a moment before you continued reading, imagine how someone felt in real life when something awful was happening to them. I’m sorry if it was hard to read but not truly because imagine having to experience it. Some of you may not know what I speak of, and for that, I am thankful. I hope your days are happy and you remain untouched by the dark depravity that exists in this world. Those like me, who have had to live in the dark for so long, will know what I speak of. You will know how it feels to endure pain and suffering. And you can’t close the door.
Trigger Warning Malicent is a dark fantasy, horror genre. Due to the nature of it's content, many of the themes and scenes are intentionally disturbing to read. Please review the trigger list provided at the beginning of the novel. Proceed with caution. Viewer discretion is advised.
Cassandra M.D. is an Amazon bestselling author with her current debut, Malicent, book one in the Seven Devils Series. She is a dark fantasy, horror, gothic romance author, combining genres and pushing boundaries to create an intense and unique reading experience. Her work centers on themes such as darker sides to human nature, psychology, mental health, spirituality, abuse and twisted themes in societal structures. When not writing she also works full time as a registered nurse and owns an art business where she makes clay sculptures with her best friend. You may also find her occasionally performing readings as she is a professional psychic medium, even utilizing her own experiences with the supernatural in some of her writing. In her free time she draws, watches anime, does yoga flow, can be found outside somewhere foraging, gardens, plays dungeons and dragons, games, and spends time with her loved ones including her American eskimo pup Pippin and the most diva black Lab brothers Bones and Biscuit.
I had the pleasure of alpha reading Malicent and was pulled in right from the moment Oliver's pudgy little blue imp toes materialized. This book plunges you into a dark high fantasy world filled with brutal covens of witches, uniquely wretched creatures, diverse familiars and some BIG mysteries. Malicent beautifully wove together whimsical and twisted in the best way making me disgusted in one moment and laughing in the next. The witty banter, deep loving connections, the lust ridden scenes and the crash outs all had me hungering for more. The characters are so complex and unique leaving me torn the whole book whether to root for them or against them. Reading the different perspectives and how grief and abuse molds these characters was truly heart wrenching. I cannot wait for the rest of the series to come out and to dive deeper into the shadows of this twisted world.
My first ever ARC review AND my most highly anticipated release of the year!!
This world is unapologetically brutal and blood-soaked, something you'll see reflected back in nearly every character in Malicent. Depravity and power go hand-in-hand, something all magic-users are intimately aware of, and most revel in that knowledge. A moral compass? Never met her.
Millicent is a complex FMC, a product of her brutal upbringing and I really admire the way the author showcased her snail's-paced growth throughout the story. It's important to remember that Millie is 200 years old and as the saying goes, it's rather difficult to teach an old dog new tricks. But she's trying. And regressing. Sh*t happens lol.
And Cage. It's been a long time since I've loved to hate an MMC as much as I did with him. Every inch of him is smug bastard and I spent the entire duration of the nearly 500 pages wanting to rip my hair out because of him. He's just as complex as Millicent, no bland "morally gray shadow daddy" that's frequently toted in the fantasy genre to be found in him.
Throw in a blonde king(enough said, sorry Felix), a recovering god-complex necromancer, a strangely feral human knight, and a blue imp that has seen and done things, you have all the makings for pure, unadulterated chaos.
That's just scratching the surface of Malicent. There's so much more I could say but I won't, you'll have to see for yourself. This is one hell of a debut novel for Cassandra D and the stakes she's set could not be higher.
I was honored and very lucky to have received this as an ARC!!!!
This was one of my top anticipated reads of this year. I have pining to read this book since I saw the fan art back in late January. This book is probably one of the best things I've ever read. It has witches, mages, horror, spice, and some mystery. It was paced well, like I couldn't put it down. Especially for a book that is almost 500 pages it goes fast. There wasn't any unnecessary filler, you got just what you needed. The spice was a perfect amount. It almost made me feral that there wasn't more, cuz if it was any hotter than what we got I would've probably burst into literal flames.
Now the characters, omg the characters were multifaceted, interesting and loveable, well except for Cage cuz that boy PMO!!! Millicent is a literal goddess, and I am down bad for this dark queen!!!! She's a badass, hot as hell and is everything that goes bump in the night. Cage, her literal enemy, is a giant pain in the butt. But their banter, their fighting, that bath scene, omg it's everything!!!! You hate him one minute and then like him the next. Kalix is the king of my heart. He's possessive, hot, strong, smart and did I say hot? Don't believe me, check the fan art. I want Iris and Felix to be my besties and Ollie (the little blue Imp) he's the best of the best. Nothing gets much better than him. Ugh I could talk about this book all day and I probably will because it was amazing. It is everything I look for in a book and more to be honest. This is a MUST read of 2025!!!!
Now I'm going to go camp out and wait for book #2!!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book caught my eye a while ago and I am honored to be part of the first lucky readers to discover it!
I had high expectations before starting reading and let me tell you : it was even better than I thought it would be!
The universe Cassandra created here is absolutely breathtaking and addictive. Her characters are otherworldly and her writing style? I swear this woman has gold in her fingers!
Millicent was exactly how I imagined her, strong yet so vulnerable throughout her journey. One of the best FMC I've encountered so far. I already knew Cage was going to be an absolute badass (and my favorite eheh) and he was! That man is easily in my top 10 of favorites MMC. Add the tension and banter between these two and you've lost me. That is what true enemies to lovers look like and I am obsessed with it!
I am also in love with Kalix and Iris. These two are absolute sweethearts and they can do nothing wrong in my eyes! Same for Felix and Ollie. To me, they are the babies of the band and I adore them to no end!
The plot itself is captivating and the twists hook you in every single time. I couldn’t put my Kindle down, I had to know what was going to happen.
I also love books that are able to make you feel throughout your reading and Malicent? I went from smiling and laughing to sadness as I read. The characters all have depths and a past so haunting you just feel for and with them.
Cassandra just became one of my favorite authors and I'll buy every single book she writes from now on!
*I was gifted an advance review copy and I am leaving this review voluntarily.*
Wow!!! This book was a journey! It was dark and twisted, but with the best comedic relief. If trauma romantasy romcom was a genre it would be this book.
Millicent was everything I was looking for in a dark romantasy and more. It had horror elements, possession, tension, and unique magic.
”She can make me her monster.”
Millicent is the first witch to possess two types of magic, she was made, through possession, torture and trauma. Cage is a mage, his kind was made to hunt witches, but Cage is the only mage to ever bond with a dragon, his power was also made at the hands of Millicent’s coven, and torture. Cage after finally suffering enough let his power take over and killed Millicent’s mother and half her coven. Millicent was Cage’s only friend as children, but after the destruction he left in his wake Millicent is no longer the little girl he once knew.
When a great evil threatens them all, the mortal king Felix must recruit the help of the Le Strange coven, which means Mllicent must live amongst the mortals she considers vermin, as well as the now first mage to the king, Cage, her mortal enemy. They must work together, very unwillingly, to get to the bottom of the strange possessions that are happening. The only issue is the darkness that resides in them both calls to each other.
The tension between Millicent and Cage was next level, these two hate each other but the ones who possess them, one wants his power, and the other wants her. It was delicious!
”Thoughts of you beneath me…they feel like both a blessing and a curse. And I’ll take that curse. I’ll sacrifice myself willingly, just for a taste. I’m on my f^cking knees at your alter.” Then she may or may not stab him.
The side characters are side ‘charactering’, the comedic relief they offer had me absolutely giggling. A king that doesn’t want to actually be king, and gives off playful energy. An imp familiar who may just hump your leg and wear makeup and wigs, and a captain of the guard that’s more than he may seem.
I cannot even put into words how amazing this book was, they could never do it justice. If you’re a dark romantasy reader this needs to be at the top of your TBR!
I would almost consider this a villain vs. villain story. Both Cage and Millicent are morally gray. Both cause harm and pain towards each other. Though I would say if I had to lean towards one villain, it would be Millicent.
But don’t get me wrong. I love the villains. I loved the story. The banter was incredible. A true enemies to lovers. Well maybe. They hate each other and it’s so incredibly obvious which I absolutely love. Neither of them pretend to tolerate each other.
Millicent is a witch, a rare and stunning one, and Cage is a (drool and book boyfriend worthy) mage. Both have a certain darkness lurking in their veins. Both incredibly powerful.
The supporting characters are also incredible. There isn’t a single character in this book I disliked except for Nora, which is the point. Felix, the king, is hilarious. Kallix? Oh my GOD I would love it if he were real. His relationship with Iris is unclear at the moment, but it IS clear that they care for each other. And I love them both.
Malicent is full of magic, betrayal, a super lovable imp named Ollie, a dragon, and so so much more. There wasn’t a second I was bored while reading this.
And the cliffhanger? Cassandra, babe. I feel like we have a Cage and Millicent relationship right now. I adore and also hate you for the cliffhanger 😂
I would give 6 stars if I could. It’s so worth the read. I cannot wait for the next one!
**i received an eARC of Malicent and in exchange, I am giving my honest review. Thank you to Cassandra M.D. and team for allowing me to be part of this experience**
Honestamente me decepcionó.
...
Honestly, I was disappointed. I'd been waiting for this book for months, with all the dark fantasy and dark romance themes, but when I read it, it's just an abusive relationship disguised as "enemies to lovers." 🤌🏻
All Cage did was torture and mistreat Millie. Yes, she gives off that badass vibe, but he literally knows her because she was his childhood friend, and out of nowhere, he hates her bc the same person who had him under his command also has her under the SAME COMMAND (?? That hatred is so much forced.
Besides the fact that I scream in anger (I literally sent audio to my friend of that), bc Millie suffered so much at Cage's hands (especially in the forest scene☺️ wtf)
I don't understand why anyone would romanticize that relationship; they're both unhinged, I understand that, but Cage went way overboard. And the ending (??) Giving him that redemption, they'll surely punish Millie again for what she did (just putting a collar on her to control her like a dog isn't enough).
I give it a 3⭐️ bc it was a quick and entertaining read, and because I'm pretty generous.
✨️The world would be better without Cage on it✨️
Oh, one detail. There is 0 smut👍🏻 Idk why they put 4/5🌶 on this, bc there IS ZERO smut. Cage just gets a sex worker to give him a blowjob, imagining she's Millie just because they look similar (bc of course, they hate each other...). That's how pathetic the book is.
What's cool are the secondary characters🎀 Ollie is so cute, I love him so much. And I want to know more about Arcadia, if I ever deign to read the second book.
Everytime it felt like the plot was gaining momentum, it reset. I feel like I reread the same thing 3x over. Millie goes in a situation alone, someone comes and rescues, she goes into stasis/has a moment. now rinse and repeat. And with the ending, we do not receive one crumb of resolution to a single thing!!! Kind of frustrating and doesn’t make me excited to really read the rest of the series. Also, I understand the flashbacks. However Every time we started getting some character development and growth, it was just interrupted by a flashback and then we reset and the development never really happened. like the plot, rinse and repeat with minimal forward movement. I think if the book was a bit longer it might have been better and we would have had more time to see these things through. It is unrealistic to expect Millie and cage to flip 180 in 1 book, I get that. But I still feel like there wasn’t enough development in the plot or characters. Like so much but so little happened at the same time? I think the set up is great for future. When Millie makes her own choices and gives herself freedom I think we will see her no longer being overpowered. idk that’s my rant.
There are so many layers to Malicent. You have complex characters an FMC that’s morally black and is also a shadow mommy AND you’re getting a shadow daddy in here as well. This has some really good found Family in here I was very attatched to these characters. It’s dark. It’s bloody. The MMC may or may not make you rage, but also blush at the same time. It had me sat seated locked in. I could not put it down the character growth in here was so be believable and paced perfectly in this book. Add this to your TBR immediately this is perfect for spooky season well done to the author.👏
I honestly don’t even know where to begin with this book… when I say, I have formed a trauma bond with the story, I’m not even being dramatic. First of all, I want to say how immensely proud I am of Cassandra and all of her hard work. She is an incredibly talented. Individual and I genuinely cannot believe this book and all of its art so far was done by a human let alone one of the sweetest humans I’ve ever met.
This is a dark paranormal horror “romantic” fantasy. There are definitely some disturbing scenes, but in my opinion, they serve a very important purpose. In my opinion. This book has so many layers to its expression. There are themes of grief, childhood trauma, loss, self harm, and of course, all of the more delicious types of gory horror like murder!
Our main female character Millicent has got to be one of my favorite FMC‘s ever. She is so flawed, but she’s so incredibly layered. She has been through unimaginable pain and she’s had everything taken from her time and time again but still she gets right back up and continues to fight Whether or not we agree with her choices is one thing but her tenacity and drive makes her who she is she is an incredible portrayal of someone who is never really been given the space to understand who they are fundamentally. She’s known so much loss and has never even been able to hold onto pieces the of herself that should belong to her and her alone. This has such a brutal effect on herself, her actions, and those around her. It can be frustrating to watch such self-destructive behavior from a readers point of view, but from someone was definitely struggled with keeping the pieces of themselves together and who is known loss and heartache. I understand her and I love her more than anything in the whole world. She’s violently misunderstood, but she was made to be that way. She pushes people away because that’s all she’s been taught to do, but when she does allow other people to have pieces of her, she gives them away freely and without asking for them back it’s a beautiful thing to watch someone who’s so broken still yarn for connection with other individuals which brings me to the other character characters in the story.
Arcadia, while she isn’t physically present in where a lot of the story takes place. She’s a constant presence and one that Millicent and the reader feels like warm sunshine. She is a bright light and she is Millicent almost foil character. She holds a piece of Millicent and protect it as well as she can. She is everything that our FMC wishes she could be, but has never been allowed to. She’s free and strong, but not jaded. She loves freely and with little concern about the more structured things Millie obsesses over. She’s an incredible side character, and I can’t wait to see (hopefully) more from her in the next book.
One ray of sunshine that we do get to see throughout the story is iris. And she does live up to her colorful name! She’s funky and all of the best ways and she’s so unpredictable. She gives the story such a unique twist every time she’s in the dialogue . She’s very similar to Arcadia, which provides Millie a sort of comforting home away from home presence in situations that Arcadia cannot be there, but Millie needs her. I’m super excited to see more from Iris and get a little bit more of a backstory because there’s definitely a lot that has been implied about her struggles that we haven’t fully seen, but I think that she has so much depth to offer.
This brings me to Kalix who while silly and a massive protecting presence for Iris and for the entire group, is a mystery to Millie and to the reader. There’s definitely a lot that’s not being said about his backstory as well, which makes me super excited to see what else he might have in store. In the beginning, we think that he’s human or as Millie would call him vermin, but there’s definitely something else lurking. He has strong protective instincts for iris, but can you blame him? She’s the cutest little sweetheart with a dangerous edge, and I think he thrives off of that there is definitely a depth to him that we haven’t been able to see yet because I think from Millie‘s point of view she isn’t quite ready to open herself up to seeing additional sides of some of these characters because she’s so independent and afraid to open up.
Speaking of afraid to open up, this brings me to our main male character none other than Cage. There is a complex history between him and Millie, with incredible amounts of trauma built to hatred. He is another character that is inherently flawed, and it seeps out into his relationships and very unique ways, depending on the individual he is close with those that he is able to protect And connect with, but he has a lot of difficulty with situations or people he’s unable to control. This is definitely a direct reflection of his childhood trauma and what he was forced to go through but honestly he’s kind of a dick about it. Lol. He’s incredibly powerful but his weaknesses Are easily spotted by the reader due to his inability to not open up and challenge his own shortcomings when it comes to expression. We see a very similar story between him and Millie of how they were raised, but Millie was forced to endure this for far longer than cage was, at least to the readers knowledge. This makes them incredibly similar for better or for worse they are both hardheaded, and they both have a very difficult time acknowledging and expressing their feelings. Cage is incredibly unique and while he isn’t “healed.” From his past traumas he does have the ability to eventually form some connections, which gives hope to Millie being able to do the same, but it must be acknowledged that while cage has also had everything taken away from him. He has also been given some things that Millie has not
One of these things that he has that I personally want is Felix ! Our silly goofy weird man whore of a king. As a character, he provides such comic relief and support through more difficult times where he pops up when either of our main characters need him most. There’s something so special about him and we haven’t gotten to see nearly enough of what his backstory and what he has to offer. He is probably my favorite “human” character. Simply because he has so much personality in every scene that he has dialogue in feels so good to read.
The same can also be said for Ollie, which also makes him one of my favorite characters! While he’s not a main character or “human” he is one of the funniest most disgustingly himself individuals that I’ve read about in a LONG time. He truly creates the funniest series of dialogue. It’s incredible. It’s so interesting too because he is Millie’s familiar which means he’s a part of her and it almost makes me wonder if that part of her that separated is a reflection of trauma and how it creates fragments and segments of yourself and he is a very tangible example of that in this story.
Honestly, I could go on for days and days about this book. The plot is incredible. The writing is stellar for a debut novel. This is probably one of the most incredible books point blank PERIODDDD. There’s so much depth in everything written here that the character and plot analysis could take me hours to reflect on and at least 20 pages. I cannot wait for the next book and this one isn’t even technically out yet!!!!! 10/10 recommend. It’s a five star read and is one of my God tier books. All hail Cassandra. Amen.
"It's rude to mention a lady's weight," he grunts, wriggling through the window. "Now pull! Put your back into it!" -King Felix nightly shenanigans
My first ARC review and book on kindle, and was one of my most anticipated reads of 2025! It was truly a deep honor to have read this.
This book, I wish typing words could truly capture and express how deliciously dark and beautiful this book was! Most dark fantasy books I’ve read feel in a round about way the same. But this book was NOT that.
To begin, the characters were so perfectly detailed, the most detail I have experienced in reading for years! You more than get enough to imagine facial expressions, and everything in between. The world building was just as detailed if not more! I didn’t have to try and build anything with my imagination this author wrote so brilliantly you immediately picture what everything looks like. The plot is HEAVY, the only questions I’m left with, are due to hanging on to that cliff!
The characters personalities have been some of my favorite ever to read. The banter and jokes king Felix represents had me laughing and smiling everytime he was in a pov. I loved that he wasn’t the typical mortal king jerk you’ll end up hating. If anything I wanted him to become my new drinking bff. And let’s not forget the most amazing sidekick and familiar Ollie! The female rage I felt, she gave zero F’s on making others happy so they would be comfortable, yet found companionship through her unlikely friendships. But make no mistake she would still stab them all if they messed around and found out 😝 It was nice to read such a heavy plot with a sprinkle of high tension slow burn spice. The horror side to this dark fantasy was AMAZING! I got goosebumps during one part where the MMC is in the attic and you are reading the sounds made during a body twisting and breaking, it gave me that old indie horror movie vibes. And the magic system I wouldn’t trade for the world! And for once, the MMC while here and there cares for the MFC, finally there’s no gender limit because he is a man, he would murder her just as much as she will try and murder him.
I found the writing style to be one of a kind and extraordinary, you can tell this author took great care in her details, grammar, and overall building of this book. I was very impressed as I find myself always looking for mistakes. The only mistake she made was not making book 2 immediately available because I need MORE now and not later. And now I find myself disappointed that I don’t have a bff Ollie or Felix to drink with and hump things 😜 Bravo and standing ovation to this author for this wild dark ride filled with true enemies to not really lovers yet, an imp that loves his big belly and blonde wig, and to the female rage we sometimes feel inside. May no man control us with his shadows, or collar us to become submissive. Chefs kiss x1000! 🖤
This book was one of my most anticipated ARCs of the year AND IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. it was so beautifully written. The creatures - I could literally picture them in my mind and would give myself the heebie jeebies imagining them (like excuse me?? crawling across the ceiling... spider-like... burn them. burn them all.) The magic - the descriptions were perfect. Everything clicked into place so well. THE BANTER - had me kicking and giggling. The characters - LOVE THEM ALL (even if I wanted to fight one certain MMC throughout the book lol) and Oliver... OLLIE BABY I LOVE YOU!! DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE, YOU DRINK YOUR WINE, WEAR THE CROWN AND/OR WIG, ROCK THEM BUTTERFLY CLIPS AND HŰMP ALL THE LEGS.
i received an ARC of Malicent and to say im obsessed is an understatement! Cage and Millicent are true enemies to lovers. I love how unique this world is, and how the world building is easy to understand and follow.
We have a shadow daddy and a shadow mommy… what more can you want? oh wait, the FMC is also morally black. whew 🙂↔️ i literally ate this book up and cannot wait for you all to have access to it on 8/8/25.
Thank you again Cassi for the opportunity to read this amazing book before the release date. now i’m impatient waiting for book 2!
A must-read for dark fantasy lovers, especially if you're a sucker for a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance.
Malicent by Cassandra M.D. hooked me from the very first page. It’s a beautifully written dark fantasy that weaves together horror, romance, humor, and mystery in all the right ways. The worldbuilding is stunning, filled with imaginative and original elements that make the story feel fresh and thrilling, while still incorporating familiar creatures and lore that ground you in the narrative.
The characters are complex and compelling, dark and mysterious, yet often surprisingly funny and relatable. At times, they’re downright gruesome and despicable, which only makes them more addicting to follow. This is one of those books that dares you to put it down… and I didn’t. I stayed up way too late devouring every chapter.
I’m already desperate for answers to the many questions I’m left with, and I cannot wait to see what’s revealed in the next installment.
Thank you, Cassandra M.D., for the incredible opportunity to read an ARC of this gem. Malicent is easily one of my top reads of the year.
Absolutely Magnificent! I need more of this ASAP. It’s interesting and engaging from start to finish.
It’s very rare for me to like all the characters in a book but in this one… they were all divine! Millicent (FMC) is so strong and wonderfully evil. Cage (MMC) is vindictive (rightfully so) and protective of those he loves. Kalix is obsessive and observant. Iris is intelligent and friendly. Felix is goofy and understanding. They all weirdly balance each other out and makes for an interesting found family dynamic.
Let’s not forget about Ollie. He deserves his own section. Ollie is Millicent familiar and he is an Imp. He is mischievous and adorable and so loving. I didn’t think I would like him before I started the book but I fell for him so hard. His relationship with Millicent is so touching.
The relationship between Millicent and Cage is wild. It’s a childhood friends to enemies to forced to work together to not lovers quite yet but there is definitely attraction. And when I say enemies I mean it. They hate each other. They really get maniacally happy when they wound each other.
The plot is great. It’s one big mystery. Monsters and mayhem. More questions than answers. I have a few theories that I will not share here about it but I think it can go in so many different directions.
FAV QUOTE: “Why are life and death lovers doomed to long for each other, never able to touch?”
TROPES: enemies to lovers, morally black FMC, morally grey MMC, forced proximity, found family, yearning, angst, magic, shadow daddy, familiars
i’m at a loss for words, that was pure chaos and i inhaled every minute of it. all of these characters are so near and dear to my heart, and watching them all love and hurt each other just pulled all my heart strings. they were all so perfectly imperfect and heavily flawed. as a reader the self destructive nature from multiple characters definitely can be frustrating but the complexities and the history between the two main characters makes it make sense. i can’t wait for them to find their way back to each other. and the plot line? insane. it was so intricately woven i had no clue where we were going or how everything was going to connect. phenomenal work.
I was lucky enough to be apart of the Alpha read, and I cannot say enough good things about Malicent! The world building felt very thorough, and the story itself was amazing! I felt myself getting attached to characters, getting excited for their ups and fearing for their downs. Every page I felt on the edge of my seat! Malicent definitely had me feeling a lot of different emotions throughout the story, at times I was excited, afraid, happy, and even angry. This is something I value a lot in story’s I read! I cannot recommend Malicent enough and it is very worthy of a 5 star review!!
This was my MOST anticipated read for what felt like YEARS, but I may just be being a little dramatic ~ it felt like years from how long it felt like I was itching for this book to be released. I was lucky enough to be able to be an ARC reader.
I really have no idea where to even begin other than the fact that this was the most 𝒷𝓇𝓊𝓉𝒶𝓁𝓁𝓎 and the most 𝒷𝑒𝒶𝓊𝓉𝒾𝒻𝓊𝓁𝓁𝓎 written book I think I've ever read. This book was just full of every emotion a human can and will ever experience. This is the definition of a TRUE enemies to lovers -- that is a readers ᴅʀᴇᴀᴍ! This book was addicting - a drug: the characters, the storyline, the plot (ᴄᴀɢᴇ... ᴄᴀɢᴇ ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴏᴛ), the world, just EVERYTHING. I couldn't put the story down and now that it's over, I wish there was a way I could read this book for the first time. I really don't think I could ever nor will I be able to get this book out of my head. 𝐼𝓉 𝓁𝒾𝓋𝑒𝓈 𝓇𝑒𝓃𝓉 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝑒.
Millicent was so beautifully written, yes, she has scars on the outside, but as a reader you can see her scars on the inside as well. She has so much to her that makes her such a strong FMC that made me instantly fall in love with her. She is such a strong and powerful character; even though she had to be raised on that mentality, she is the embodiment of a strong, sarcastic, powerful, beautiful woman. I really do believe that as the book continued on during the end, we got to see her soft spot for ALL characters, even (MY MAN) Cage.
Cage was brought up alongside the coven and had to endure the same "lessons" as Millie and although he got out, she never did. He learned the ins and outs of the coven and met his true family (Iris, Kalix, and Felix) along the way as he grew up. He is a man wrapped up with trauma and hatred when it comes to witches. He has learned a lot and learned to keep the monster within him at bay, it just seems that whenever Millicent is around, that beast tries so hard to come out - which is so hot. ~ [Whenever he was involved, any mention of him, any gesture he does, his comments, his inner monologues, him in general made both lips would smile and twitch, same with Kalix.] 𝘦𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘭 𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳
Some of these scenes had me SCREAMING without the S, I swear! Really wanted to punch a hole in the wall multiple times. Throw my kindle out the window. I also was just really close to summoning Cage myself! Just let me be delusional! Please!
𝔸𝕕𝕕𝕚𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕝 𝕋𝕙𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤: This book hooks you in INSTANTLY. This was Cassandra's first ever book; the description and the way that this book was written felt as if she has been writing her whole entire life. I was left in awe. Not only because of the book, but because of her. She is so beyond talented and truly one of the most wholesome, genuine, and most sweetest person you will ever meet. ~ I know you're reading this, I still have a bone to pick with you! I love you always!
𝙽𝚘𝚝𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝙲𝚊𝚜𝚜𝚒: Thank you for being you and for literally putting yourself into this book, this book came to life because of YOU! I am so lucky to be able to be apart of your journey! I remember when you were still somewhat in the writing phase of this beautiful story and I was still so excited and proud of you! You wrote a BOOK! I am so proud of you! I am seeing how many people have pre-ordered this book, how many people have it on their "𝘞𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘛𝘰 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥" list (almost 600) SCREAMING! I am so beyond excited to see what the future has in store for you and all the future opportunities! I love you, sunshine! From: The number One Cage Defender
P.S I will most likely be editing this review the more I think about this book. I am and will forever be in awe of this story as well as you!
Malicent is Cassandra’s debut novel. This is a dark tale of a young witch who has been through some very awful things. Millicent is a powerful rare witch, able to wield two magics, and is also the heir of her coven. She is under the mentorship of the coven’s elder, Nora, who has exceedingly high expectations of her. Nora sends Millicent to aid the Southern king in determining what is going on with the North. There are strange things happening, powerful magic at play.
What Millicent doesn’t expect to find at the right hand of the king, is the mage responsible for her mother’s death. Cage is also very powerful and they are quite the match for one another. These two hate each other, I mean really hate each other.
I could say that the book was good and I enjoyed all of the characters. The plot was original and I felt like I never knew what was going to happen from chapter to chapter. I felt the pacing was good, at times agonizing, especially because it has enemies to lovers trope. It has world building, flashback scenes, and plenty of action. There is a lot at play here though, and the foundation was laid for us to make us want to find more discoveries down the road.
The supporting characters were just so, so wonderful. While this is book has some darkish scenes, the comedic moments are well placed and created a strong feeling of found family. I loved learning about the different kinds of magics the witches could wield. It was fun seeing Iris’ bubbly personality contrast with the deathly nature of her necromancy. Kalix is a hidden gem, I just know there’s more than meets the eye with that one. And Felix, oh my goodness what a character. Arcadia wasn’t on page a lot, but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of her in the next one. And Oliver the imp. OLIVER. I NEED MORE OLIVER.
Anyway, at any given moment I wanted to beat both MCs over the head or just shake them… really hard! This book made me want to hate, yet simultaneously love the MCs. The tension, the angst, and their banter was good! The whiplash I got after every SINGLE one of their interactions was disorienting to say the least. This was the only reason it coudn't give it 5 starts rating, because it felt strange...
And the cliffhanger…???!!??! Even without getting the answers we desire, the book flowed very well and made me want to keep reading to find out more. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see how this mystery unfolds. Can’t wait for book 2!
I had sky high expectations for this book ever since I stumbled across the author on TikTok and somehow, Cassandra completely exceeded them. This book has been my most anticipated read since February. I knew I was going to love it from the moment I saw the teasers and stunning character art, and once I finally had it in my hands, I absolutely devoured it in under a day. No regrets. If I could rate this book 100 stars, I would in a heartbeat; it’s that good.
The visuals made everything even more vivid. Seeing the art before diving into the story helped me picture Cage and Millicent perfectly, and I instantly fell in love with them. From the first chapter (which, yes, made me cry), I knew I was in for something special. Cassandra’s writing style is so distinct and refreshing; completely unlike what you usually find in popular books right now, and in the best possible way.
The tension between Cage and Millicent? Unmatched. Like, feral, enemies in the truest sense, not just snarky bickering with secret pining. They genuinely hate each other… and love it. Their brutal history and slow burn animosity make every moment between them electric. It’s not an easy or gentle enemies to lovers arc, and that’s exactly what makes it so satisfying. I’m obsessed with their dynamic; and Cage’s filthy mouth? Unhinged and perfect. I’m fully in love with him. I need him.
Millicent is such a strong, beautifully wicked FMC. She’s cunning and powerful in a way that’s unapologetic and magnetic. Cage is just as dark and dangerous; vindictive and protective in equal measure; and it makes their interactions explode with intensity.
And the side characters? Absolute standouts. Felix is the lovable goof, Iris is intelligent and grounded, and Kalix is quietly intense in the most obsessive way. I already know I’m going to fall hard for Iris and Kalix’s book. Their whole found family vibe brings a warmth and chaotic balance to the story that makes the world feel so rich and full.
But let’s talk about Ollie; Millicent’s Imp familiar. I didn’t expect to love him as much as I did, but he stole my heart. Mischievous, adorable, fiercely loyal; I honestly want an Ollie novella just to get more of him. His bond with Millicent was so sweet and added an extra layer of heart to the story.
The plot itself is phenomenal from start to finish. Twists, heartbreak, betrayal; it never lets up, and that ending had me gasping. I need the next book in the series yesterday. I already know it’s going to wreck me in the best way possible.
If you love real enemies to lovers, complex magic, rich worldbuilding, found family, and a deliciously intense slow burn, this book is for you. I’m absolutely obsessed; and I’m counting the days until the sequel drops.
I’ve had the pleasure of being an ARC reader for this AMAZING book! I’d been looking forward to it since I first saw it advertised, with its wonderful art!
I am in absolute awe with this book. First of all, it’s super freaking detailed! The world building is insane!! I had high expectations with this book from little previews I read, and it completely blew me away!
First of all, the art the author commissions by @imsaikotik on instagram, that was one of the first things that pulled me in. The art is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
I really loved the characters, especially Cage. I dunno, I loved his attitude, his snarkiness, his ability to just be an asshole sometimes. I love him. I love his relationship with Millicent. Instead of enemies to lovers it’s enemies AND lovers. They hate each other so much, but they cannot ignore the attraction they feel towards each other, (even if Millie says otherwise.) There isn’t any FULL spicy scenes, but enough teasing that just makes you beg for more!! …and then it gets ripped away before happening again a little bit later. I crave it!
Millicent herself is a queen. She gets what she wants and doesn’t care about the consequences. Her lil familiar, Ollie, is a cutie too. His devotion to her is wonderful.
Millie is one powerful bitch, and she knows it and will not hesitate to show it off. Especially to “vermin” as she calls humans.
Kalix is 🥵🥵🥵🥵. If Iris doesn’t hurry up and snag that hottie of a man, I will!! He’s a gentle, but FIERCE, man. Is understanding but will still put someone (Millie) down if need be. Agghhh!!
And Iris? A goddess. A beautiful necromancer of a goddess. She’s a lil nerd with dissecting her specimens and her note taking, it’s too cute. I absolutely love red heads too 👀👀 I can’t wait to read her and Kalix’s novella because I need to see her do SOMETHING besides reject him!! Ahhhh!!!
This is honestly one of the best reads I’ve read this year! I’m so honored to read it before it came out! (Also sad because I have to wait even longer for another book)

I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for Malicent, and I’m still reeling. This book doesn’t stick to a single genre—it’s a dark romance, a horror tale, and a twisted fantasy all wrapped in one blood-soaked, soul-snarling ride.
Cage, the MMC, is... complicated. He’s done horrific things. He is the monster under the bed. But somehow? I don’t hate him. His devotion to Millie is intense and deeply moving, especially once you start to understand how long he’s carried it.
Millie’s arc is raw and real. She grows, regresses, fights, and falters—but through it all, she remains strong, powerful, and compelling.
And the side characters? Incredible. Felix, the king, feels like a walking contradiction: indulgent in his wine and women, yet strangely endearing and sharp when it matters. For some reason, I kept envisioning him as King John in the animated Robin Hood. You see it, right??? Iris, the necromancer, is pure brilliance—and her dynamic with Kalix crackles. I need an entire book about those two.
But my heart belongs to Ollie. That creepy little sweetheart had me at “missus.” He’s unsettling and adorable all at once, and somehow manages to add a layer of warmth in a world that is cold and cruel.
The horror in this book is visceral. I could hear the bones cracking. The landscapes are vividly bleak, and the tension is thick enough to drown in.
This is the book for you if you crave super slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance with monsters, magic, and morally gray everything. Dark fantasy doesn’t get much better than this.
A dark romance horror with both MC’s being morally grey will almost always win me over and this one absolutely did. It had well developed characters including the side characters, scary creatures, comedic familiar, and an overall interesting story with fantastic horror elements.
Malicent - ARC Review 🔪🩸 . 5/⭐️ 5/🌶️ . I am completely blown away! The world building, the found family, the PLOTTTTTTTT and I’m not just talking about Lord Cage Black 🥵 I am completely obsessed with Malicent! . I came across @cassandra page on Lemon8 and I became obsessed with her page and constantly commented when will Malicent be released!!!! I was in such a reading slump nothing was catching my attention but this. . OMG I’m so obsessed! It’s just a dark gothic fantasy romance it truly transported me to another realm. I already have theories about the next books! 📚 It does end on a cliffhanger but will be thinking about this books for quite some time!
Literally finished in one sitting. I genuinely couldn't put it down, didn't sleep, and I don't regret it one bit. I am in love with characters, and the story was beautifully done, 100% recommend.
Still staring at the wall. I don’t know how I’m going to wait for the next book without screaming.
I had the opportunity to be an ARC for Malicent and devoured isn’t even the right word. This book blew me away and is in my top three reads of this year.
There’s magic, witches, mages, dragons, creepy creatures, and banter…and so much more!
This is a dark fantasy, horror, psychological, enemies to enemies to lovers. The FMC is strong, curvy, and a total badass. The MMC is a shadow daddy that just can’t stop getting under her skin. Even the side characters steal your heart and you want to know more.
Her writing is easy to follow and flows in a way that you don’t realize how long you’ve been reading. I went to sleep thinking about Millie and Cage and woke up grabbing my kindle to read more. The plot flows smoothly and the plot twists are chefs kiss 🧑🍳 💋
…and the mouth on this man! 👏🏼 😅🥵 if you want some true enemies with tension (and denial of feelings) this is the book for you!
Characters 5 ⭐️ Plot a million ⭐️ Magic system 5 ⭐️ Banter 5 ⭐️ Spice and tension 5 ⭐️
I’ve followed the making of this book since January and have had it marked to purchase asap. Cassandra is an amazingly talented writer with a heart for what she writes. She’s real, raw, and willing to push the limits. Her ability to write magic systems, creepy creatures, and important details is top tier.
I ended with tears in my eyes and cursing that it was over.
I cannot wait to follow her journey in writing and see what comes from The Seven Devils Series. Book release is 8/8/2025 and preorders are open on Barnes and Noble now!
I was able to be an arc reader for Malicent and I literally just finished it. I am sitting here just in awe of the story that I got to experience. The characters are all so different but well thought out. I’ve been following the author for a hot minute and I’ve been so excited to read Malicent, so when I was chosen for an arc reader I was excitedly screaming for the heavens.
Actually learning the inner workings and thoughts of Millie and Cage made me love them all the more. You expect this dark, grungy, enemies to lovers, but there are so many aspects of little pockets of light coming through that made me squeal in happiness. Despite these little bits of light, the characters, especially Millie and Cage, have so much trauma and darkness in them that you wonder how they could ever be slightly redeemable. But, to be honest, I don’t think characters need to necessarily be redeemable. A dark witch that straight up murders without even thinking twice about the bodies left behind, maybe not redeemable, but a character that I absolutely love and adore. Even just through this first book Millie has both somehow grown as a person and also not changed at all. Dark, morally black(tbh) characters that don’t change into sunshine and rainbows is what I like to see. Millie and Cage are absolutely perfect and I can’t wait to see how their relationship (enemies with blood benefits?) develops.
Also Kalix and Iris??? Oooh those two are so so interesting! I have so many theories about Kalix in general and his relationship with Iris but we were just given breadcrumbs so I can’t actually theorize anything concrete. I know this series will have multiple books and I cannot wait to see these characters and this world again!!
Hoping the author doesn’t come at me again for leaving a low review just because I support other indies…
I really wanted to like this book. I’d been anticipating it since I saw it advertised on TikTok and Instagram. But ultimately it was a DNF for me. The sentence structure read weird, almost like a first draft. The characters were very bland, and their roles were confusing (Millicent was a queen but then taking orders??). The relationship between her and Cage may be enemies to lovers, but it is ultimately abusive and exists without trigger warnings. I have no clue where the high spice rating is coming from… but maybe I just didn’t get to the deeper spice because I didn’t finish the novel.
If you’re looking for a toxic, and abusive relationship wrapped into a marketed “enemies to lovers” this may be for you. If not, maybe pass up on this one.
