She walked in to save me— now I'd rip out my own heart just to watch her hold it.
I'm Slater—hockey captain, campus legend, and the nightmare your daddy warned you about.
Violent, vicious, and untouchable.
I don't do rules. I sure as hell don't do consequences.
Then Sage Monroe shows up with eyes that won't look at me too long. As my physical therapist, she's supposed to keep me healthy. Keep her distance. But I don't want distance.
I want her ruined. Marked. Mine.
She thinks she can stay detached.
But I see the shadows in her. The cracks.
And I'll split them wide open, one sweet moan at a time.
The moment she touches my skin—professional, careful—I decide I'll burn the whole fucking world down to keep her. I'll destroy anyone who's ever hurt her, starting with myself.
Soon she'll find out that I'm not just a hockey player.
I'm a weapon. A sickness. An addiction.
And she just unleashed the monster inside.
Now there's no saving either of us.

I’m really not sure how I feel about this book. (spoilers ahead)
This book starts off HEAVY. H and his brother are playing in a hockey game. H’s brother gets killed by a puck to the head. During the funeral, H is getting high off pills. This whole chapter was so sad. I do have to admit the author did a great job at making me feel H’s overwhelming grief. I could feel his desperation. 😭
3 years later, h is leaving town fast after getting some nasty texts from her ex and the Ex’s BFF. It’s implied that she had smex with both of them and they have the pictures/videos. She rapidly applying to all sorts of PT jobs. One calls her that’s 2000 miles away. She gets the job working as a PT for a hockey team (I think it’s at a college) She finds her a quick roommate named Emily.
H is now a major a-hole and he sleeps with tons of women. He has major anger issues. His POV is garbage especially when he’s thinking about the women he has smex with. 😩 One scene he’s with 2 women A couple of other scenes he’s with this OW he sleeps with regularly. He’s with her one other time after he meets h, but BEFORE she moves in. Once h moves in with him, he’s with nobody else.
H and h don’t really like each other when they meet. H has a bad hip and she tries to help him, but he’s a walking red flag 🚩
h and roommate, Emily, hang out a few times at different bars. Emily eventually hits on h, and h turns her down. Then Emily tells her to get out of her house. h moves in with H.
The MCs have a few moments, but h always turns him down before it gets too far. Their relationship starts to feel really toxic. h was sending out all sorts of mixed signals, tbf.
h’s boss catches H and h in the equipment room, and basically h has to quit so she won’t be fired.
H and h have a fight and H gets into his old stash of pills he has hidden in his house. He also gets very drunk. This is when h finds out he’s an addict. She gets rid of the pills. The next morning, they finally have smex and according to his POV- it’s life changing 🤪🤪🤨 (who needs therapy?) H is never mentioned wearing a condom
They spend a week hidden away, having smex. (This is when I had to ask myself “wait, isn’t he in college and not the NHL?) Then when he goes back to hockey, the coach makes him take a drug test. He passed! HOW?
There is almost a breakup when h finds more pills hidden. He finally gives her all the pills and she gets rid of them (not sure why she didn’t just flush them) H snoops while she’s gone, and finds all the nasty messages/videos/pictures the ex sent.
(The real story with the ex- he talked h into being blindfolded and having smex. While she was, he bought in his BFF to also have smex with her and recorded it all. She didn’t know there was somebody else involved until the blindfold was removed. She told them no.)
Naturally 😂 after H finds the messages, H has an away game in the ex’s city. He arranges a meetup and beats the ex. He puts rapist on his forehead, then posted it online for the world to see. Strangely, h is happy about this. 🤷♀️
They admit they love each other. Things are going good. H gets drafted into the NHL. h hears from her friend that the ex’s BFF was killed. Somebody ran him over. I’m not sure why the BFF was killed and not the ex???? Yes, H ran him over.
Personally, I just felt like this couple did not have any chemistry together except for toxicity. There is spice in this book, but some of it was very cringy. The way H is written- he needs therapy. His POV (especially in the first half of the book) was disturbing. I also felt at times that the college setting didn’t seem to go with this story.

The author writes really well and truly makes you feel the emotions of the characters. My biggest issue was how the book started out after the opening scene and the details of the book. The two characters don’t really interact and instead we’re viewing how they live day to day. Also, the book is based on college level hockey, but the MMC never attends classes… Just confusing.
There’s way too many explicit spicy scenes with characters that are not the MFC. I understand that the author was trying to portray how the MMC was just going through the motions day to day but I felt like those moments with other women could have been mentioned without all the detail.
The MFC was ok, but a bit hypocritical. At first I liked her, but then she got angry at him over an issue he had and then got upset when he found out about a situation she was humiliated about. She didn’t want secrets between them but was planning on keeping that specific situation to herself. She does redeem herself though.
The book is spicy, but not incredibly spicy. Half the scenes occur between the MMC and another woman and also the MMC with two other women. Nothing intimate happens between the MMC and the MFC until nearly 70%. I personally don’t like it when I have to read explicit scenes between a main character and people other than the main love interest. It gives me the ick.
Grief is a horrible bed mate. It can become an all consuming thing which steals your life. It turns breathing into gasping, eyes can be vacant, and the world goes on as you struggle to make it through another day.
Slater is facing a grief so all consuming that he feels nothing. Pushing his body on the ice is all he cares about. Injury, plays, other players, all come last. He pushes through for his deceased brother.
Sage is an assistant physical therapist. She spot the hip injury immediately. She offers help. She's new. On the run from an abusive ex, who's still threatening her. Afraid, but determined. She avoids Slater at all cost.
He reluctantly agrees to let her help him privately. She agrees. She holds him at bay. He wants her. It's mutual, but due to her overwhelming fear, she keeps her distance.
He seeks her aggressively. No dice. He changes tactics, going slow and sweet, still resistance. He's getting more angry. Then, they both crack a little and it's fire.
Secrets revealed, trust established, love sparks.
IMO this dark, twisted story isn't for everyone, but sometimes love just needs to be felt, not judged, or understood. If your demons play well together, sometimes that's what makes it work.
This writer’s style is reminiscent of Tijan, which makes this a hard review for me. While the premise of two deeply damaged, closed off characters who find their way through the darkness with love and trust was a pleasure to read unfortunately there were a lot of inconsistencies that pulled me away from the storyline. Still, a good read. I love heroes who fall first and will do anything to protect their love/obsession.
there was a lot about this that i liked and a lot that i hated. i don’t know which was more prominent. despite how toxic these two were i still devoured the book but my opinions on it are fairly divided. i appreciated slater’s character development but at the end of the day he never really addressed his trauma and grief. sage didn’t really either. but it was still entertaining
Good book. My first for this author. I enjoyed the experience. It was a slow burn that could have had a more profound impact with a more self-aware heroine. Also, what happened to her duchebag Ex?
Dark, broody, controlling. This plot wasn't my favorite as I don't understand when they go from I hate you to you're mine so fast. Sage needed to learn how to communicate. Also the seemingly lack of protection from STDs bothered me.
How dare you break my heart in the beginning?! I cried so hard. The way you write the details of emotions and feelings helps the reader understand on a personal level.
Watching Sage and Slater break down each others walls was so therapeutic. I feel like in this story they had some severe trauma that they went through and found the right person to help them through it. The way Slater fights Sages demons for her too is just soooooo 👀
Make sure you read the trigger warnings though. There are some subjects that are tough.
