Windy Hollow's Ancient Heirlooms, Simmering Secrets... and a Deadly Taste of Revenge.
Windy Hollow’s sweet Bonfire Night turns sour when antique dealer Linus Vane is found dying at the signal tower.
Baker Beth Sanders, whose only recipe for the night should have been her famous bonfire toffee pie, overhears his cryptic final whisper about “two keys,” missing Vane family treasures.
What seems a tragic fall soon boils over into a murder investigation, plunging Beth and her loyal corgi Snickers into a sticky maze of stolen heirlooms and Christian Vane's carefully guarded secrets.
The missing keys are just the first course in this deadly meal. The arrival of Roderick Dodsworth is tied to a hidden family legacy and stirs up more questions than answers. Meanwhile, rival dealer Veronica Thorne, whose temper runs as hot as her rhetoric, had publicly vowed revenge.
Beth must sift through half-baked theories and long-simmering feuds to find the real meaning behind Linus’s last words before Windy Hollow’s past serves up another victim.
Murder at the Tower is the third book in the Windy Hollow Mystery series.
This is the first book I have read in both this series and also from this author.
While at the bonfire night celebration, Beth's dog escapes her leash in fright from the fireworks.
While chasing the dog, she is led to a local tower, where she discovers a local antiques dealer who is seriously injured and is close to death.
Pro's: There are developed characters and a good plot line.
Con's: I really struggled with the rating I gave as the book hit a couple of my pet peeves. Why is a cop sharing information and evidence with civilians? Beth is a baker, along with her apprentice Sofie, and Penny is a bookstore owner.
Not having read the previous books in the series, I'm dumbfounded as to how Beth is able to both investigate and gather information from possible suspects on her own, as I'm unsure as to why she can sit in on interrogations.
Also, why is the Chief of Police so lazy that he doesn't want a potential murder investigated as a murder?
When Beth is working the end-of-summer festival with her employee and her faithful companion, Snickers, with her, the fireworks start, which sends Snickers into a panic. The poor dog is just shaking and manages to get out of his collar and takes off running, Beth and her friend Penny hot on his trail. Unfortunately, said trail leads to a man just on the verge of death. Beth sends Penny, along with Snickers, away and calls the police. Sadly, the man doesn’t make it. So now Beth, along with Penny and Snickers, are on the trail of the murderer, and with suspects aplenty, it isn’t an easy task. This was an exciting read, full of twists and turns and I so did not see that ending coming!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I just finish Murder at the Tower and enjoyed very much. Windy Hollow was having it annual Bonfire Night when there was a murder at the signal tower and Beth Sanders comes across the body of Linus Vane while out looking for her dog Snickers who was frightened away because of the fireworks and noise at the Bonfire night. The sheriff wanted to say that it was just an accident and not murder until the ME comfirmed that it was murder. Beth Sanders, her friend Penny and the police officer Manny Piccott helping them solve the crime. There were lots of suspects and more twist and turn regarding what actually happened. It took most the time to solve the crime was well with the read. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoy a good murder mystery.
Good story with lots of twist and turns. Antique dealers that seem to be at odds with one another over everything. Going after the same items at sales, looking for the next big thing, and keeping family business in the forefront before the murder of one of the main characters. Beth Sanders get involved with looking into the murder, because she and her dog Snickers found the body and now want to solve the mystery of a dying mans last words.
Murder, secrets and much more than it seems when a murder takes place on the night of the Bonfire. Baker Beth Sanders is determined to go after the truth. A intriguing read which captivates you from the start. I received a ARC copy and recommend this book to other readers.
