He trusts his crew.

He relies on order.

I really wanted to love this. I love the idea of being in space, getting to know a crew. Having an adventure.

Unfortunately, I didn't love this. There were portions that I really enjoyed, but I didn't feel much of a connection to the main characters and wasn't sure, aside from the romance, what the plot was even supposed to be. It seemed like there was a lot going on in this world, but we didn't hear much about it. It left me feeling a bit lost for most of the story.

I did not enjoy Gemma. She always talked about being a professional, but she was a brat who never listened, even to those in charge of her. She was cocky, pouty, and childish. The Captain, Trevor, also seemed to shift from one thing to another partway through the story. It was abrupt.

This is marketed as YA and while I'm sure it would appeal to many within that age range, it reads more like a book geared toward adults.

This had a lot of good moments and I liked the found family aspect of the story. I think it could appeal to a wide range of readers, if you enjoy romance set in space.

Thank you to the author and publisher for a complimentary copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

Sweet romance, forced proximity (it's a little space ship!), and a great couple. Gemma's talent and skill put her where many women don't get to be -- the pilot's seat. And her captain, well, he'd rather she not be there at all. Their push and pull is a lot like taunting gravity...and forces are going to collide. Great read. I received an ebook copy of this book to review. I've preordered it -- you should too. June 16th!

After a job gone bad six months ago and losing one of his crew mates….Trevor and his crew are tasked once again with a dangerous mission to a planet undergoing a trades war and a potential civil war. Due to a cease-fire, this is the window they need to get in and out safely. But then Trevor is assigned a new pilot after losing the previous one and she’s a woman. Trevor is not thrilled and unsure what to do with a woman on board, plus he’s hiding a huge secret.

Gemma spent all her savings on flight school and got top marks, but has never actually gotten a job. Until, one day, after a year of no jobs just because she’s a woman, Gemma gets a call for a job…finally.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the adventure, the found family, and space! This was a fun ride to read. The author is very good at writing and adventure and relationships between friends and a found family being built.

This at times made me think of the animated film Sinbad, except she’s the pilot not a stowaway 😆 the found family and banter was similar to that movie. And I love that movie.

I really liked a lot of the characters. They were all different and a lot of fun. I really liked Trevor, especially at the beginning. I loved his grumpiness and how he slowly started opening up. I loved his friendship with his crew, it was quite sweet. Zane and Joe were a lot of fun too, especially Zane, he is adorable.

I loved Gemma’s relationship with her older sister Sandy. They knew each other so well and were very close and you could tell based on their delayed conversations they had with each other.

I couldn’t give this five stars because although I liked Gemma’s relationship with her sister, I did not like Gemma. She had always wanted a job and she gets one and acts like a petty child, is immature(like it’s shocking how immature she is when it’s her first real job, like WHY would you act like that????), and shows zero respect to anyone on the crew, especially the captain(and no he wasn’t being very respectful, HOWEVER, there’s a reason). And so, it made me think, that must be why she never got a job because she didn’t know how to listen, was disrespectful and always thought she was right.

Because I didn’t like her, I wasn’t a fan of the romance because it kind of confused me when their relationship built. It seemed like they didn’t really respect each other and I just didn’t feel the tension I was expecting. Actually, I did feel tension, it was the tension waiting for Gemma to open up her mouth and say something she shouldn’t again, or do something she shouldn’t. Read the room Gemma and stop being so nosey.

I also thought it was odd that Trevor seemed to become a completely different person from the start. Like from grumpy, broody handsome Captain, to a sensitive and emotional person and it partly makes sense, but I can’t say why cause spoilers, but I don’t think he should have changed as much as he did.

Anyways, I went off on a tangent there. I really enjoyed the story and adventure a lot, I just REALLY didn’t like Gemma and she was everywhere 😑 I would definitely give this a read. I’m sure it’s a me-thing when it came to the female MC. I don’t like brats 🤷🏼‍♀️

Earth? Sometime in the far future…
Tubies genetically enhanced human clones created to be soldiers without conscience or emotions, taught to obey, to hate and kill. Those who created them were even worse, without heart. When a child was found to be a defective model they were thrown away as trash, left to die. Then there came a time when they were deemed to dangerous to live. All were found and destroyed. However, someone wants to recreate them. They must be stopped.

The mission….
It’s up to the crew of the Michal to enter a war zone, get the vital information into the hands of the bio tech who is trying to stop those engineering the new deadly clones. While at the center are two people, seemingly totally opposite, who will join forces to complete the vital mission, but this mission has been betrayed. The crew will be hunted and targeted for destruction.
Trevor Lee didn’t want a female pilot no matter how expertly she could maneuver his ship. Captaining his own ship had been his dream. His entire life had been spent in in space. His had been a mechanic that found the terrified child, loved him, taught him what he knew and supported his dream to captain his own spaceship. Along with his friend Charlie a doctor they raised Trevor and were the only family he had; the only people he ever loved. Now his father was gone. He still had Charlie and he had made friends with his crew. Emotions were something he’d always struggled to control, trust had never come easily to him, believing that if anyone who came to close to him they might learn his secret. Something that must never come to light. So why did Gemma intrigue him, cause feelings and emotions he hadn’t ever had or even understood?
Gemma was an excellent pilot, but she was better at pushing people’s buttons, bending rules, loved her music loud and hated being told she couldn’t do something. So different from the closed off Captain, thought he was a bit of an enigma. She knew he didn’t want her on his ship, and perhaps aggravating him was part of the fun, until she began to have feelings for him.
Their mission had to succeed. It would be filled with danger, adventure, threats, death, betrayal and a slow burn romance. I enjoyed the different POVs that lead the reader through the action, learning more about the characters, and the race, with its twists and turns, to complete their mission. I loved this story and even more so the characters and how they interacted, came together. There is an ending, but also a hint that there could be more story to come.

Ok, so before I talk about this book, I want to gush again about how I found Jessica Kaye as an author - "Beyond the Wall". The journey/quest book that I absolutely enjoyed and had no right being so good. It was in my top 5 favorite reads for 2024, and I cannot recommend it enough. It also made Jessica Kaye an instant read author for me.

So, onto Taunting Gravity - this one was more on the sci-fi than I usually read. The kind of books I always have waiting in the background, but think will require too much brain power. That said, I feel like the balance between easy to follow, and fully operational space travel that makes sense was very well done. I wasn't bogged down by technical speech, and was able to fully enjoy the genre.

Gemma is a young, female pilot who's the top of her class. That still hasn't helped her get a job, and she's spent a year waiting for a chance to prove herself. An unexpected accident lands her a spot on Captain Trevor Lee's crew. Even though he doesn't need the distraction of a female on the ship.

Trevor was raised in space. He's always been steady and calm, he had enough earning to buy his ship outright upon becoming a captain. He's used to the risks, the ups and downs of running cargo and working for Omni Authority. He's not prepared for the chaos a young blonde pilot is about to bring into his life.

I love the crew so much. Zane made my day every time I needed it, and I feel like a side story about Chase is something that should very much be a thing! One thing I've noticed about Kaye's writing is how much a friendship and dialogue develops before any romance. It's not insta love, and you get to see the journey through the ups and downs.

I'm almost tempted to say that it's slow at times, but it never truly felt that way. Days that should be routine space travel, getting to know the crew, never felt like filler. The story flowed so well, and it could just be me and my love of her writing style. But I never felt like it was dragging, or I was waiting for the next big thing to happen, I was content to stay in the moment.

I absolutely adore this book. Super fast read and I will probably read it again in the future. It ended on a bit of a cliff hanger and I really hope the author gives us a sequel. This is the second book I have read by this author and just love her writing style!

Captain Trevor Lee has his own cargo ship with a small crew. But in their last mission they lost their pilot. So when the director assigns Captain Lee his next assignment he also assigns him another pilot, a female pilot. In these days it is unheard of for a female to pilot a ship but Gemma Stone got the highest marks in her class and the director doesn't give Captain Lee a chance to say no to her. He is an absolute jerk to her when she first comes on board but she is determined to wear him down and befriend him. He refers to her as 'pilot' for half the book.

For most of the book they are in close proximity with each other and I love their banter back and forth. There are things about Trevor that bothers Gemma and vice versa. When they crash land on a planet and believe that their entire crew perished in the crash, they have to figure out how to stay alive and figure out how to get off the planet and complete their mission all the while being stalked by an unknown enemy. Captain Lee also has a secret he keeps to himself that he never tells a soul and it is leaked on the planet what that secret is. He is afraid that secret will compromise his mission and that Gemma, who he has fallen in love with, will abandon him. This read is action packed and kept me on my toes. Two nights of reading well after midnight. I recommend this book to anyone unless you don't like lovey lovey stories.

I received an advance review copy for free and these thoughts are all my own.

The crew of the Michal is sent by the Omni Authority to deliver relief supplies, but their captain, Trevor Lee, carries a secret mission of his own. Order-driven and haunted by past mistakes, Trevor clashes with his new pilot, the brilliant and defiant Gemma Stone, whose sharp wit tests his every nerve. When a crash strands them on an uncharted planet, they must survive the elements—and each other—to complete their mission and find a way home.

This was a fun space adventure! It gave Star Trek meets Firefly vibes for me, but for young adults. It did make me question why someone so young was captain, but this just means I am eager to know more about the bigger world of this story. (And from the way the books ends, I am definitely expecting some kind of sequel.)

The characters were fun. Trevor was my favorite. I liked how his backstory is slowly revealed and explained his actions. Gemma took longer for me to warm up to. She is very...young, and some of her decisions left me wanting to smack her upside the head. One would think someone who just graduated pilot school would have learned to follow the hierarchy of command.

It is a fast paced story, going from one obstacle to the next. The chapters were an odd mix as well. Some were quite long, and some very short. I never knew if I’d be able to finish a chapter in one sitting or not.

Overall, though, it was a well written tale and one I would recommend to any reader looking for a clean sci-fi adventure.

I absolutely loved this book! Look, the age group says from 11-18, but I am 66 years old and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved how the characters were introduced and as a result, it was easy to follow along as it moved forward. It was truly an adventure. It was lively, funny, intense, and the story line even had touching moments in it. At times, it was fast paced and exciting. I do not like a story that I can figure out and this book left me hanging on what would happen next. It had great flow. It kept my attention from the very start to the very end. I liked the characters, their personalties and how they interacted with each other. I felt like I was watching a movie as I read along. I cannot imagine others not liking this. Good job! Just wow! - I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Jessica Kaye's newest book, Taunting Gravity, was released last week and is a fun and engaging sci-fi story that takes risks I was not prepared for. But I loved it! Like all of her books, this one ends on a happy note, but sometimes we need a happy ending. The interplay between Gemma and Trevor reminds me of an office romance or workplace romance. It's cute, relatable, and very well done. The all-male crew that flies with Trevor has a great interplay and feels authentic. It's like watching your favorite sitcom for the eighth time, because you love the characters and it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Jessica's characters are always the best part of her books, and that shines here. If you are a fan of good, clean sci-fi and/or adventure, you’ll like this book. What a journey!

Gemma is this very confident young woman. She is definitely working in a man’s world and needs to prove herself.

Trevor is a very private person and not at all glad about a young girl joining his team.

However their differences, Trevor can’t help himself but fall for Gemma and Gemma can’t get Trevor out of her head.

They are on quite a journey, where they are shot at, chased and kept locked down. However helping each other and believing in each other helps them on their journey.

This book is definitely worth reading. It has friendship, loyalty, love, compassion, action and bad guys vs. Good guys. There are quite a lot of twist and turns and truths that surprises you.

I can’t wait to read the next one in this series.

I received an advanced reader copy but the opinions are all my own :)

This book was such a cute, light read! I finished it on a road trip vacation and it was perfect!

It's been a while since I dipped my toes into the YA genre, but I met the wonderful Jessica Kaye at a tiny convention and the cover and her booth piqued my interest.

I do appreciate the tropes this book had (forced proximity and grumpy/sunshine) in addition to a feisty female lead proving how she worked hard and deserved her role on the ship, rather than being a damsel in distress. I just wish it was longer, I miss the characters already, but I'm hoping for a sequel in the future!

I was totally sucked in when I saw the cover. This was a really fun starship romance, full of loads of bubbling tension, high stakes and high action sequences. And tons of plot twists! I had fun just tagging along with them for the ride.

I thought the crew had a really nice chemistry about them and who doesn’t love an enemies to lovers arc?

I enjoyed some of the humanoid relatable angles with her sister and stressing about getting back for the wedding. I think my favorite part of this book was the video game, seeing a gamer side to our FMC. That felt very fresh. I’m a little sad the video game they play is not a real game, haha I was so invested by the end.

Great read.

Taunting Gravity kept my attention throughout the book. Each chapter was filled with adventure, tension, and suspense. Jessica Kaye has a gift for storytelling, and this book has plenty of surprises. I always love when there are twists and turns in the plot. This book will especially appeal to those who enjoy space travel and lots of page-turning excitement.

Special note: This book has no cursing, and physical contact is limited to kissing. I appreciate those things in a book aimed for the young adult audience.

Cute YA Sci-fi novel about a pilot and a captain who go through the wringer on a mission and end up falling in love. It definitely read more YA than I’m used to, with some pretty obvious set up and dialogue. I was impressed with the Sci-fi/tech jargon, though. It never felt fake or made up (no flanges or flux capacitors). I mean, it may have been totally made up but seemed believable to me!

Sci-fi like this isn’t usually my jam but it read this ARC bc I really liked the author’s previous novel.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me this free copy in exchange for a review.
