How We Are

Rate this book
Five years is a long time to love someone from a distance.

But I’ve finally finished my degree, broken free from my Kentucky momma and her pageant dreams, and moved to Chicago to be with my soulmate.

Step move in and make up for lost time with Darius. Intimately.
Step land my dream job and start fresh.

Easy enough… until my mom starts scheming to drag me home and slap a crown back on my head.

And then there’s Arlo—Darius’s best friend and frustratingly hot roommate. He’s moody, brash, and impossible to ignore.

When I find out he and Darius have shared women before, everything shifts.

I shouldn’t want both of them.

Good girls don’t get tangled in fantasies that include two men. They don't wonder, what if.

They definitely don’t tempt a man like Arlo…

Right?

First of all, thanks NetGalley for the ARC read in exchange for an honest review!
This one has it all, the amazing back stories, the love, the spice, the anger.. Jolene is breaking out of her shell and finding herself in the very best of ways. Watching her transform from what her mother molded her to be to who she truly was- chefs kiss. At first the ‘spice’ feels a little basic, but I promise it gets so much better- it’s part of her glow up, chill out guys. When the spice happens, it HAPPENS, prepare yourself a cold shower and maybe a fan because wowzers.
I cannot wait for the next book in this series, I look forward to Hayley’s story and hope it’s just as spicy!

Poppy is a true wordsmith! This story follows Jolene's journey from pageant queen to facing her deepest truths and it was impossible to put this book down! Jolene finally makes it out of Kentucky and to Chicago with her boyfriend Darius and his panty dropping hot best friend Arlo. When she finds out the men have shared women before something shifts, the tangled feelings between the three of them are explored beautifully. Ohhh and the spice is top notch and leaves you breathless! 👩‍🍳💋 When Jolene's mom ramps up her scheming to get Jolene back home will it work or will Jolene follow her heart? This was a stunning, emotional story of love, identity and choosing your own path! 1000000/10 recommend.

I liked this book a lot!!! This is a MFM why choose romance. This is book 1 of Choosing Us Series.

This book follows Darius, Arlo, and Jolene and how they navigate all living together after Darius and Jolene had an open long-distance relationship. Jolene is a former pageant queen whose mother likes to manage her life... The chemistry was great, and I love a grumpy mmc, and Arlo fits that role perfectly, and he will not be ignored.

I loved how the relationship was not instant, and the author shows the ups and downs throughout the story. I think all the characters grew allot throughout the book to which is great. I can't wait to read the next book.

Thank you, NetGalley, for this book!!!

How We Are was a forced proximity, found family, why choose steamy romance that had the most beautiful happily ever after!  Set in the city of Chicago, this story whisked me away.  With a good girl, a cinnamon roll you’ll want to steal from the pages, and a bad boy that will make your heart beat faster, I quickly flew through this story.  If you adore MFM romance, or you’ve been wanting to give one a try, this is your book!
I’m hoping they will learn to at least respect each other, if not more, because I won’t give either of them up. That’s not an option. - Darius

Jolene was a pageant queen who was moving to Chicago to live with her boyfriend, Darius.  They had done the long distance thing for the last five years, and their love was strong, unbreakable, and so beautiful too.  Living with Darius, was his best friend Arlo.  And from the moment Arlo appeared on the pages, I was obsessed.  Right from the start, Jolene and Arlo were explosive.  The tension between them thrummed with electricity.  And even when Arlo was kind to Jolene, it was laced with sexual tension.  I loved that he called her Kentucky, and I couldn’t wait for them all to cross the line to more!
I need to re-friend-zone her and fast, but as strong as my will is, I’m struggling. - Arlo

“I don’t want it to stop,” I whisper.
Darius nuzzles his nose against mine. “It doesn’t have to.” - Jolene

One of my favorite things about this book was how they were all open and honest.  Not only about what they wanted physically, but about their feelings too.  Although…..it took some a little while longer to figure that out.  But when they were all together, it was extremely explicit, erotic, and sexy.  I loved the steamy games they would play.  And I loved even more how much they respected each other.  The love between Darius and Arlo was so beautiful *wipes a tear from my eye*.  So what unfolded was a story that warmed my heart and had the most fabulous kinky sex!
Our girl. Chills rise on my arms and neck.

If you’re looking for a polyamorous throuple to fall head over heels in love with, Arlo, Jolene and Darius are your people!  With all the dirty talk, sexting, vibrators, restraints, and more, How We Are was a sensual and erotic book that will consume you from that first page to the last!
This moment. Them. Everything about them is life now.

Thanks for the ARC

Well this book was great, and i can not wait for the next book.

I loved how the dynamic between these people developed, and how you could see them slowly change.
They were so good togther and very sweet.

While I think Darius was very sweet, he was a little bland by himself for me, but when with the others he was great, I would have loved to see more persanality from him.

Arlo strated out as a jerk, but he grew on my as the book got going

Jolene was a total sweetheart with a sassy streak, and she was great, I would wish for a bit more of her sass, but she was my absolut favorit

Raw read to its core. Verbal judo master of storytelling. Loved the chemistry between the characters mixed in with a little life drama as well. Arlo, the hot roommate, just refuses to be ignored. That man will absolutely not be ignored or the 3rd wheel in anything, not in the book or even your memories. If I missed a page that did not have a little spice, I must've been reading to fast because the pages flowed and was difficult to put down.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5) (Star Rating)
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (5/5) (Spice Scale)

If there was ever a book that justified the 5-chili-pepper rating, it’s How We Are by Poppy Minnix. This contemporary, new adult romance sizzles with the kind of chemistry you feel through the page—yet all that heat is as purposeful and essential as the heartfelt journey at the novel’s core.

Our story centers on a small-town former pageant queen who’s spent her whole life conforming to her mother’s tightly controlled vision. But she’s finally ready to break free. With a new city (Chicago!), a move-in with her longtime boyfriend, and the possibility of a fresh start, her life seems poised for transformation. Enter her boyfriend’s intriguing roommate, and suddenly, her path to self-discovery takes a decidedly spicy—and genuinely emotional—turn.

The MFM/why-choose setup is handled with honesty and realism. Minnix doesn’t shy away from the mechanics or the emotions of polyamory; instead, she weaves it directly into the protagonist’s journey of personal liberation. There’s real exploration here about what it means to claim your desires and step outside the boundaries set by family or society.

While the romance brings plenty of steam (enough that I fully endorse the 5 🌶️ rating—the scenes are not just plentiful, they’re impactful and plot-relevant), the spice level never overshadows the coming-of-age arc. Watching the main character shed her former self, learn what she wants, and face the insecurity of not meeting her mother’s expectations felt authentic and relatable.

However, the writing didn’t quite reach a five-star level for me. At times, it lacked the polish or depth needed for a higher rating, and some of the prose felt serviceable rather than standout. Most notably, the ending felt rushed—after so much build-up and character growth, I would have loved a deeper, more satisfying resolution instead of the quick wrap-up that we got.

In summary:
How We Are delivers tons of sizzle with real heart and a thoughtful look at polyamory and self-liberation, but uneven writing and a rushed conclusion hold it back from true greatness. Still, it’s a fast-paced, spicy read perfect for romance fans searching for both heat and honesty.

How We Are Choosing Us Book One by Poppy Minnix

I started this book thinking it was gonna be some love story, but turns out these 3 folks was getting it on like the world was ending tomorrow, and I aint even mad about it. It kept me up reading half the night.

Now this girl, she has done run off from her momma who sounded like she's got more hairspray than sense, trying to make her kid into some kinda beauty queen when all she wanted was her man Darius. She goes to Chicago all happy and ready to finally do some kissing and living. But then this Arlo fella shows up, Darius best friend and roommate, and good grief if that don't stir the pot hotter than a crawfish boil.

Next thing you know, everybody wants everybody, and I was like, girl, what are you doing? But then again, I couldn't stop reading because it was just good and spicy. They were banging all over the place like there was no tomorrow, and by the end I was just sitting there like, whew, I need a cold drink and a nap.

It isn't no picnic of a book, its more like a roller coaster that forgot to stop. But I liked it because it had heart mixed in with all the heat. The girl was torn between doing right and doing what felt right, and that made it kinda real to me.

I give it 4 outta 5 Catfish.

Wow that was incredible! I have so much to say! I LOVE LOVE LOVE reading about poly couples. The love between poly couples is so much more beautiful and pure and intense. There’s really nothing better.

I absolutely adored how this book was set and the relationship dynamics. It was something I hadn’t experienced before. Already having an established relationship to start with was unfamiliar territory and was absolutely fantastic. The comfort I felt with Jolene and Darius, I just wanted to be wrapped between them in a warm hug.

The love between Darius and Arlo, that was absolute perfection. Don’t get me wrong I love a sword crossing moment and boyfriends being boyfriends but this was so wholesome and unique. The pure love and adoration they held for each other and delighted in small affections made my soul bloom. It was perfect.

I love watching a character with previous family trauma and expectations blossom into the person they’re meant to be. Experiencing Jolene explore herself with Arlo and become for confident in the person she is becoming and wants to be was magnificent.

I loved so much about this book, the only downside was I feel like it dragged on and on and could’ve been shorter or more succinct but besides that everything was perfect and I hope they are living in the beautiful Caribbean right now surrounded by the new family they’ve created

I was grateful to be provided an audiobook copy by NetGalley in order to leave an honest review. I'm going to out myself as being a giant MMF, MFM, FMM fan. As Britney sang, "Merrier the more, triple fun that way." Transparency is key here, so I will also start by saying I didn't love the set up: a longtime M/F couple that have been apart for years during which they were both allowed to sleep with other people, the M of this couple has been tag-teaming women with his best friend, and now the F has come to live with the M and his best friend. I am thrilled to share that author Poppy Minnix makes the relationship not only blossom, but bloom. By the end of this book, I was rooting for all three main characters. Also, the spice in here is a FOUR ALARM FIRE. There is no sword crossing, but a gentle kiss here and there to underline the emotional connection between the male characters happen. I was honestly sad that the book had to end, and I will definitely read the next one. Thank you to NetGalley for this advance copy.

Special thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a digital copy in exchange for an honest review

This was much different than I was expecting, in a really good way! I came here for the spice, but I stayed for the plot. This ultimately is a book about communication and self exploration. There was never a moment of "Oh, I'm about to cheat on my partner," or "Oh, I'm about to betray my best friend and fuck his girlfriend," because all 3 of these characters were in constant communication with each other about their circumstances.

In a bookish world filled with the miscommunication trope, this was a breath of fresh air. It was really lovely to see each of these characters grow as the story went on and they worked through the way they were feeling about each other

This book  is quite a bit out my comfort zone its not really a thing id go to as such as a why choose,  like I love the  mfm stuff all that but its just very different but in a good way  I liked it alot.  Its well written and  I love how the male charaters are very different and I feel for Jolene  how her mum keeps pushing her pageant  life on her but jolene has other ideas but to start with she is very anxious and worried about what her mother would think.

Only think I find difficult  is how many chapters and pages  but still loved it this is more of a me thing i struggle with bigger paged books

Thank you for the ARC

Gosh, I do love me a Why Choose. Why have your cake when you can eat it too? And boy did this book deliver. The spice was SPICING.

A solid 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ on the spice scale.

This was a steamy contemporary MFM, new adult romance. I really appreciate when books have impactful and relevant to the plot level spice, and How We Are falls right into that category I’m happy to say. I liked Jolene’s journey of self discovery, she wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is but she had heart and a little sassy streak that just worked for her. Jolene’s relationships with all of the MMCs was honest and complex and so much fun to read. Ugh I’m just a sucker for Why Choose, it’s so easy for this trope to fall flat and be SO one dimensional. Poppy did a great job with this one and I’m really looking forward to the next one.

Thanks NetGalley for letting me read and review. ☺️

ARC Review: Poppy Minnix’s ‘How we are’

THE WHAT: Jolene is a southern, pagent girl that is moving to Chicago to pursue her professional dreams and move in with her long-term boyfriend, Darius, against her mother’s wishes. Arlo, is Darius’ best friend and roommate - Jolene finds herself in a constant battle between her attraction to Arlo, want for an non-traditional relationship, and the shame of these feelings which are different from her small-town, conservative values.

THE VIBE: MMF spicy romance that is raw, exciting, and a bit taboo.

THE HOW: Minnix developed these characters so the reader can feel and resonate with their flaws and watch their growth over the story. This speaks to her commitment to make this book more than just about sex. The writing is very descriptive and written beautifully allowing the reader to feel connected to the story.

THE HIT: This book is all things SPICY. Minnix unapologetically delves into the world of sex, love and inner battles in the most skillful way. She has balanced the characters collective growth by taking the time to develop each character carefully as their stories weave together.

THE MISS: This is a long book - the storyline stretches a little bit in the middle and drags out before it picks back up. Some of these areas could have been condensed to maintain momentum and engagement.

THE REC: This book is perfect for readers that love enjoy character-driven stories and all things spice. If you love stories that show the development and growth of the various emotions of the characters, this one is for you.

THE OVERALL: This was my first ARC review - thank you NetGalley and Poppy Minnix for the opportunity to read and review it. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am excited to read the prequel.

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Overall, this book gets 4/5.

Honestly? In the end, I was there for the plot. Dariusz communication skills were great and seeing him be so secure with change was nice to see. Poppy does write a compelling spice scene - sometimes I felt like it was the same and went on a bit but that’s because I actually ended up invested in the story and seeing how their emotions trumped their desires.

One of the sweetest yet spiciest books ever!

Wow. This was an emotionally intense book full of some of the hottest steam I've read and I LOVED it! These characters are a part of my psyche now.

The good girl, bad boy, and cinnamon roll dynamics between the MCs were so well written. I enjoyed the build-up and how their relationship evolved. I was hooked by the entirety of this romance.
It was so much more than just smut, it had me looking into myself in more ways than I anticipated. Absolutely beautiful story full of angst and emotion but also so much kink that had me overheating and swooning.

Tropes:
Why choose
MFM
Kink
Explicit
Forced proximity

Yes please! Why choose? truly? go for it. Jolene is a good girl with dirty thoughts. And she should definitely just run wild and go for both of these hotties.
This book is about a woman bragging free from her overbearing mother and finding herself torn between two men. so why choose!? Go for it and don't geek bad about it. Some of us got to love vicariously through Jolene and we loved every minute of it. it was hot and spicy, and I'm sure a bunch of us needed a cold shower when we were done reading this book lol.
I enjoyed getting outside of myself for a moment and taking a walk on the wild side with Jolene.

Oh wow, I absolutely devoured this one. Watching all 3 of the main characters grow into themselves throughout this book was heartwarming and seeing their pain from their own perspective whilst watching the others do their upmost best to fix it was tough to read but beautifully done. I really can’t wait to see where this series goes next!

I enjoyed this, it was a fun romp (excuse the pun)

Darius is fun and sweet, but i feel like we didn’t get as much about him as i wouldve liked.

Arlo is the Star - He is complicated and fierce and its a joy to see his development

Definitely worth a read! First in the series and for sure sets up an amazing story line for rest of the books. I love that it’s a why choose love triangle and especially the bad boy with a soft spot. The characters development and growth is spot on for a new adult ménage story. 5/5 🌶️ 10/10 ⭐️

Throuple goals

Jolene and Darius have been in a long distance relationship for years. Darius is also in love with his best friend Arlo (no swords crossing). Things really pick up when Jolene and Arlo stop fighting their curiosities.

Great storyline and characters! I liked reading their difficulties navigating through their relationship. It wasn't just immediately happy and easy for them. As well as Jolene going through her tough relationship with her mom. Loved it!

Darius, Jolene and Arlo are Everything!

This book has everything you want in a poly romance - super hot spice, so much heart and a story that you can’t put down. This is one of the best ménage stories I’ve ever read. The character development was absolutely fantastic - realistic and so believable. So very well done without sacrificing any of the spice we all love.
Highly recommend!!

I recently picked up this MFM romance and found it to be an enjoyable read! The concept of moving in with your soulmate, only to develop feelings for his best friend/roommate, was definitely intriguing. The author did a great job with the high-spice scenes, and the chemistry between the characters was palpable. 🔥 I appreciated the heroine's journey of self-discovery and overcoming guilt. My main reason for not giving it a higher rating was that I felt some of the emotional beats could have been explored a bit more deeply, and the pacing felt a little uneven at times. It's a good choice if you're in the mood for a steamy, complex love triangle (or rather, throuple!) but it didn't quite become a new favorite.

I never felt happier for an author and her characters

Words like…”well…”and …”wow …” come to mind first. The …”want more…”. This book touched something in me that has been unnamed,,,I acknowledged…most of my life. I won’t say dormant, because that is not entirely true. It has always been a question that has never had answers. Now this something has contours thanks to “How we are”. I love that about this book. It creates space for creative personalities to explore. Thank you Poppy Minnix. You make me want to write….
