With the Slosth and Devil Incursions taken care of, Drew Wright should be settling down for some well-deserved rest. But… the world is still in shambles, survivors are fighting over limited resources, and he no longer has access to magical, gun-wielding minions.
So, rest will have to wait.
Drew needs to find a new way to control hordes of undead minions without his brain leaking out through his ears. Becoming an undead Lich is certainly an option, but that involves losing certain… assets that he’d rather hold on to, especially with him and Amber considering the option of having children. Which is nearly as daunting as the apocalypse itself.
To further complicate Drew’s life, the gods of the multiverse have finally come to Earth, making deals and offering great strength to those who bend the knee. Meanwhile, other powerful figures are emerging, ones that Drew will not be able to face alone.
When a new threat arises, one that seeks the extinction of the human race, Drew is forced to set aside his morals to focus on what really matters…
Most the other reviews seem more like the author's friends up selling the book but not actually giving reviews about what happened.
So to put it plainly, you got 80% of the book of the MC just constantly crying about his moral choices. Then saying "I'll do what I got to do" Then next chapter whining about his moral choices again and stating again "I'll do what I have to do to protect my family" rinse, repeat, EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER.
Then you have the other side. Him whining, yes whining. Throwing tantrums, yelling and getting pissy the gods won't solve all his problems for him. He could have his mother spend her money to leave the planet with his family and leave it all behind. Yet he wants to protect and be a leader but also wants others to solve all the problems.
Even a 10 year old could see that even if they solve this one, who will solve the next big bad if he doesn't grow, then the next and next yet this MC acts like a brain dead turtle in his inability to think forward more than a single week.
He acts like a person who wants the government to solve all his problems by giving him money and free everything so he doesn't have to work or do anything himself. It's utterly annoying.
He throws tantrums at everything, like hating the system even though without it, he'd literally be dead. This isn't some cruel fate where everything would be fine without it. Without it, they'd all be dead from a gammaray burst. He has NO reason to throw fits at the system itself.
Then the gods? Oh boo hoo, the big powerful gods that gave him so many advantages from levels, protection and superior knowledge have motivations for wanting to help him. Gasp! As if he doesn't go out his way to level people in his settlement so they can better defend it. He is literally doing the same thing as his goddess. Except her settlement is the universe. Yes she's building him up to do something for her. Big deal. Only a moron would think otherwise. It's not like it was a 'hey random person, have a million dollars, bye' situation. Of course he has a job because she wants him to do something. Is this character suddenly brain dead?
He's acting like a spoiled and entitled rich kid who got so many advantages that he's ungrateful and throws a fit when he doesn't get everything he wants. He got advanced training to C grade. He got valkyeries to protect his settlement. He got superior knowledge of the gods, classes and whats going on in his world. He got told what invasion points were threats. He got told about threats instead of being clueless as everyone else. Got Free civilization pillar, Got a great shop instead of overcharged ones, got a light house pillar to collect souls making it so no natural undead horrors arrive. Got protection from C grades when he was weak. He got a soul armory...
He got sooo many things for his goddess and seems like the only thing she asks is that he grows stronger and fights. Yet he's throwing a tantrum that she's making him fight and grow after she is basically the only reason he isn't living in a hovel, starving and unable to feed survivors around him?
The MC has become so whiny and ungrateful that honestly I got sick of it. I'm dropping the series.
So my honest review. Unless you love moral drivel where the MC constantly going on and on every chapter about right and wrong and if he's the bad guy or not. Then Drop it.
If you don't like characters who act all entitled and throw fits, then I wouldn't suggest this one. I have no clue who can like a character who has so much handed to him and acts like a spoiled brat that he doesn't get one thing on a silver platter. That he has to fight for it.
This wasn't some great come to terms and grow a spine book where he learns the value of hard work and growth. No this was a .....Mommy made me do hard work, now I hate her. Waaaaaah, book. The mere fact he gets mad at his goddess for making him fight and grow instead of letting the gods take care of everything is so freaking laughably stupid that it just ruins the whole series.
Talk about ending with a bang. Not the bang that has Hades itching all down-under, that's just a demon thing, but rather the set-up for the 4th Necromancer book. Apparently you really have to choose your apprentices wisely. Or else. Unfortunately we'll have to wait 6 months or so to scratch that itch.
This book, First Necromancer Book 3, clocks in at 756 pages, around 200 longer than the last one. It is a true delight. Sure, Drew is often in angst over doing the right thing versus the necessary thing, but that's Drew. He comes through when he needs to in a big "Champion of the Goddess of Death" way. In this volume his sacrifices are huge, but at least he gets big wide channels out of it, also huge are his accomplishments though the mayor of Houston isn't a fan. Can't please everyone! Still, Drew (and a few thousand undead) had to stop by to pick up Mark's brother and quell an incursion of underwater critters. Sort of. But all that was just a prelude to facing off against the scourge of humanity, the Soul Suppressor, aka Nick. Bit of a dweeb but he read the right book. Anyway, Coldfang89 has a real winner here and I'm really looking forward to the next one 'cause this book ends really making you want to know what happens next!
I've got so many things im hoping to find out about!
Something im hoping for is that Seth finds out about Drews resentment toward the Baleful Lady and chooses to help Drew become stronger to spite the her and to help him surpass the Baleful Lady and show how "useless" she is.
I hope the Baleful lady learns how to treat Drew better and to earn his forgiveness.
I also hope to find out why the baleful lady seems to care about drew more than just like a "sponsor" would. I get that Drew has a lot of potential. But she made it sound like Drew was more important than her other old Champions based on how much she doesnt want to lose him
The relationship dynamics between the protagonist, his wife, and his friends are compelling, and the interactions involving the gods add a layer of entertaining fun to the story. The author also successfully weaves in sharp pop culture and nerd culture references. However, the narrative is hindered by an excess of unnecessary dialogue, which made me lose interest. Furthermore, the main character's internal conflicts often feel drawn out. Despite the obvious choice being right in front of him, he is consistently slow to act, a quality I found frustrating. I finished the third book, but my engagement with the series faded significantly.
I've been eagerly waiting for this books released and was not disappointed. Found it to be even better than the first two books. Love the banter and the slice of life sections but really enjoyed how you portrayed Drew's moral dilemma and the lengths he would go to, to protect his own. Really looking forward to book 4 and hopefully many more after.
Book 3 is a good lord better than the first. Book 2 was a bit disappointing but 3 is spot on, in my opinion. A lot of action, really good world-building, human fallabilities, and gods being forgetting themselves and where they came from and paying the price. This is a really good read.
Great character building, I like the tension between Drew and his Patron
I really enjoy this series. I am looking forward to the next instalments. Although I found drew a bit too thick sometimes, Lessons he had previously learned seem a bit forgotten not in a major way but just a bit that I found annoying.
Bold of anyone to talk smack on a cat named Princess Donut 😑 That misguided opinion aside, Drew is seriously becoming OP'd for the greater population, and I am so here for it! Get good, n00bs! 🤣😈🤣 Forgot this series also has puma check practices 👍 Be safe out there! STOP THE HATE ON CATS!!
I greatly enjoyed this book and love the twists that Coldfang89 throws in to keep us readers guessing. I can’t wait to see how the story progresses. Anxiously awaiting to see how things develop!
Best of the series by a far, far margin. This book is more detailed, not mindless skipping years, and not explaining any spells at level ups. This has a decent plot, and sub plot.
Book 3 may have been my favorite so far. We got to see more of the politics at play at the Gods level and Drew utilize his Minions properly. Solid read and I can't wait for the next one.
A really good third entry in this series. Easy to read and well written. Likeable and believable cast of characters. Really enjoy the System build-out.
Continuously went downhill. Msde it through chspter 5 before throwing in the towel. Inconsistencies throughout as well as a complete mismatch between tone and behavior.
