In the new Tidewater novel by the author of Guarded, a kiss between strangers draws both into unexpected danger and unforgettable desire...
She’s searching for a sign...
Hannah Halloran has always believed in her gift. The things she sees through her psychic touch have never led her wrong before. Not when they led her to an unforgettable night with a sexy Marine at a bar. Not when she felt a need to leave her home and find the sisters she barely knows. And not now, when she is an unwilling witness to a brutal murder...
He’s ready to show her...
All Niall Graham wants is some peace. He’s recovering from the horrors of war, struggling to save his family’s restaurant, and desperate to forget Hannah, the beautiful woman who left him with memories of a mind-blowing night together and a bogus phone number. But a quiet life is hard to manage—especially when Hannah strides back into his restaurant with the news that a serial killer is on the loose and lurking closer than anyone could have guessed...
Mary Behre could never decide which kind of story she liked more, paranormal, mysteries or romances. So it only made sense that she combined all three in her books.
All three novels in her Tidewater Trilogy are award-winners.
Woohoo! Now that's what you call stellar romantic suspense. Energized gave me everything I was looking for starting with one hella sexy (and sometimes grumbly) Marine. *swoons* Romance, awesome characters, fan yourself sexy times and one heck of a surprise twist...oh yeah. Loved this one to bits.
Now. I need Ryan and Ian's stories. omg do I!
Full review to come.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reading Progress...
7/25--pg86 OMG Thank you!! Finally an author who got it right. Marines! Not marines.
7/24--Eeps! Diving in. *rubs hands together* can't wait!
This has been a fun series from the get-go. The blend of humor, suspense and psychic paranormal romance has been nearly addictive. With this story, I can agree with a few others and say the author hit her stride and gave me my favorite one yet. There's something about curmudgeonly ex-Marines, teasing steely-spined heroines with a psychic crift, a dark killer, the bustle of a restaurant, and a potential family reunion all blended together to make for unputdownable reading.
Yes, this is the third book in a series and I would recommend them in order, but I suppose the reader could accidentally grab this one and do just fine.
The story opens with Marine Niall Graham hitting a bar after attending the wake of two of his buddies. He has a need to get away. Hours later, nursing the same beer and the fascinating bartender telling him that its closing time, he still is not very put together and his dark memories are hard beside him. This however is set aside when the quirky gal who served his drink distracts him and soon the hum of desire which is reciprocated leads to a night of hot, lusty sheet burning sex and a connection that he can do nothing about. He has to return to duty, but he is heartened when Hannah leaves him her phone number.
Later, he realizes that she played him or so he thought when the phone number is bogus. Niall doesn't have time to dwell on Hannah because he's out of the Marines, his mom's health broke down so the family restaurant is now in he and his brother's hands, and his brother, Ross, has made some gutsy and expensive moves to be more successful. Niall struggles as he heals from his time in the military and he works hard and by the book which rubs his brother wrong, but those woes are nothing when he thinks Hannah Halloran shows up in his restaurant to stalk him. He can't decide whether he is happy or upset about that even when she claims that it was merely fate.
Hannah Halloran never forgot the hurting Marine who spent a night in her bed and she hoped that for that one night she was able to bring him some solace. She wished that he would have called, but understood that he had to go back to his other life. But her life has moved on too. She learns that her birth sisters have been looking for her plus she can use her gift to reconnect with her dead mother. Hannah just has to touch a metal object and she is sucked into that person's memories through their eyes. Hannah heads to Tidewater on her dual quests and soon realizes that fate has an interesting plan when she discovers Niall and his brother own a restaurant on the very property that used to be her childhood home. She feels it is serendipity that Ross hired her that very day even if Niall's icy rejection and suspicion really hurt. It is not long before her quest receives the addition of a grisly and demented murderer that only she can find. Hannah would love for a new chance with Niall and for a happy reunion with her sisters and she would really like to survive Tidewater's first serial killer.
Wowsers was this one a blast from cover to cover. I loved Hannah and besides wanting to pop Niall a few times, I had a soft spot for the ol' crankypants Marine too. It was fun reconnecting with a few familiar characters and exciting as Hannah's gift led her closer to the killer. Niall and Hannah made a great couple even if they were at outs through much of the story. There wasn't as much reunion as I was expecting with the sisters, but fortunately, another reviewer warned of that so I was prepared.
This one had a bit of everything and so the focus wasn't strongly on any one thing. I liked the story as a whole, but spent a lot of it waiting for things, too. I wait for the romance to progress and I waited for the murder situation to progress. There were side stories that begged for attention, too. It all finally leaped forward in the latter half of the book.
Niall and Hannah had a strong connection throughout the story. I have to share one of their teasing exchanges: In her bare feet, she had to tip her head way back to look at him. It made him feel too big. Her, too small. "You plan to get undressed anytime soon? Or do you just plan to drop trou and do it with your boots on. 'Cause hot as that sounds, I was kind of hoping for something would last a little longer than fifteen seconds." Niall frowned and relaxed his arms, tucking his thumbs in the pockets of his cargo pants. But her words baffled him. "I don't think I've ever had sex end in only fifteen seconds." "You're so literal. No, I bet you haven't." She laughed while twisting her pink braid between her fingers. loc. 264 Niall and Hannah from Energized
This was the last sister to get her story, but I really hope that this doesn't mean the end. I would so love to see Ryan and Ian get stories.
All in all, I had such a good time and read through this one quickly. Those who enjoy some humor in their stories and like a bit of psychic and steaminess to their romantic suspenses should give these a go.
My thanks to Penguin Group for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
All Niall Graham wants is some peace but a quiet life is hard to come by especially when Hannah strides into his restaurant with the news that a serial killer is on the loose and striking a little too close to home in this adrenaline pumping romantic suspense.
Hannah’s gift had never steered her wrong, not when it lead to her one night with sexy Marine and not when she felt the need to leave home and find her sisters but now it’s made her an unwilling witness to a brutal murder and the reader can’t help but get caught up in the turmoil that flows from the pages as Hannah and Niall are forced to find the killer before Hannah becomes an accidental victim. The chemistry between Hannah and Niall sizzles with heat and vibrant energy from every page but the relationship is a work in progress as Niall has a few control issues that need to be worked out. The emotional turbulence l that flows from the pages due to Niall’s past and Hannah’s gift captures the heart and the fast paced smooth flowing plot keeps readers on the edge with lots of suspense, excitement and romance.
Expectations build lots of tension throughout the story as the danger closes in and Hannah’s gift starts exacting a dangerous toll on her mind, especially with some of the not so good consequences for trying to do the right thing, but hey there is also the added excitement of Hannah finally being in the same town as her sisters, meeting new family and making new friends.
The Tidewater books are always full of vivid imagery and Mary Behre has a gift for providing vibrant and detailed descriptions of the psychic elements that makes it easy for the reader to imagine and adds an air of believability and along with the intriguing events ensures that the readers can’t put the book down until they have read every last word and I certainly hope to visit the people of Tidewater again. - Eva
Romantic thrillers are typically pretty formulaic. He has a military background and problems expressing his feelings. She has a shady past or a dark secret. They typically have sex super early on, then meet up again later on and it's a bit awkward but sparks fly. ENERGIZED manages to hit all those bases, but has enough original additions that helped me devour it.
Hannah's gift helps her get into the minds and lives of the people around her, but when she accidentally relives the latest murder of a serial killer, she needs to figure out whose memories she relived before the psycho kills again. It was great to get the point of view of the killer without revealing who it was.
Niall, an ex-Marine, was convincingly alpha, and his PTSD made him interesting to get to know. He was also able to help Hannah when her gift starts to endanger her, which I really liked.
My only annoyance with the book was how quickly the characters revealed their powers to nearly everyone. Considering some of the negative reactions, you'd think they'd play their cards a bit closer to their chest.
Even with that quirk, ENERGIZED was super entertaining, and was easy to get into even though I hadn't read the first two books; in fact, the previous heroes and heroines were gracefully introduced and never felt like they overpowered the story.
I would recommend this book for lovers of urban fantasy and vanilla romantic thrillers alike. It's grounded enough to appeal to the later, with just enough fantasy to keep it weird.
I really enjoyed meeting the third and final Scott sister. Niall and Hannah were just as awesome as a couple as the couples that came before them. One of the things I love about the Tidewater series is that it has a great cast of secondary characters. We get to see a lot of old and we get a few new as well in ENERGIZED.
The opening chapter of ENERGIZED did a great job of showing the reader how absolutely into each other Niall and Hannah were going to be for the rest of the book. They both develop lot of feelings in a very short amount of time, but because of communication issues, it takes them a long time to realize what the other feels. I found Hannah to be independent, secure in her abilities, and just an overall fun person. Niall was super broody for a lot of the book, but he grows on you as he shows his true self. They were really a great match and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop.
I loved the murder mystery of ENERGIZED. I had NO clue who the bad rotten egg was until it was revealed. I was truly SHOCKED and in fact, thought it was someone else. The overall storyline didn't feel over at the end of ENERGIZED so I hope we have another book coming and I really want to see all of the sisters together for an entire book, we didn't get enough of that. Here's to hoping.
* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
ENERGIZED closes the Scott-sisters arc, but I am hoping that this wont be the last book of the series. MBehre's style is addictive, entertaining, and hopeful, with equal amounts of sci-fi, sexy and romance thrown in to make the stories jucier.
I had very mixed feelings about Energized. There are aspects of it I loved, and it is just as well-written as the other books in the series, but I found parts of it disturbing because of how much it goes into the head of a really sick serial killer. That’s very much a personal reaction; that sort of thing gives me nightmares (literally.) If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, it probably won’t bother you in the least.
I really enjoyed the relationship between the hero and heroine once they met again, though I’m not generally a fan of one-night stands in romance novels (or anywhere else.) I loved Hannah, who has a warm and caring heart and a faith in the general benevolence of “the universe” that I found really appealing. Her psychometric talent fascinated me. Niall is also a compelling character, torn between his attraction to Hannah and his reluctance to let anyone get close to him. He’s clearly dealing with some form of PTSD after his stint in Afghanistan. His relationship with his brother is strained, and Behre explores their feelings and actions well.
Speaking of sibling relationships, I loved that this book finally reunites the three Scott sisters, something the series has been working toward since book one. It was also fun to see the recurring characters again, including Karma and Zig from the novella Harmonized. Karma in particular has an important supporting role in this book. And it’s fun to speculate on who will figure in the next books; Ryan and Ian, two of the McKinnon cousins, are almost certain to get their own books at some point in the near future (and I can’t wait!)
I salute the author for keeping me guessing – or rather, for some well-written misdirection and an intriguing mystery. At times, I was certain I knew who the serial killer was, and then I would start to wonder. There were several twists toward the end, most of which I didn’t see coming. And I definitely *didn’t* spot the murderer!
As I’ve mentioned in a previous review, this series contain a fair amount of blunt language (in terms of swearing), so if that really puts you off, that might be a problem. I will say that it is completely realistic and fits the characters.. The characters are all well-drawn and the plot is exciting, suspenseful, and fast-paced, so it’s definitely worth looking past the language even if you’re a little uncomfortable with it.
Due to my personal aversion to most serial-killer fiction, I’m not sure I’ll read this book again – or when I do, I plan to skip Hannah’s actual visions and rely on my memory for the gist of what they contain, and focus on the relationships, both romantic and familial. But I can’t wait for the next book in the series, and to finding out what’s next for the psychic and investigative denizens of Tidewater.
Rating Note: I gave this 3.5 stars on my blog, and 4 on Amazon because their qualifications are different (3 is just "It was Okay", while on Goodreads it's "I liked it".) My rating is based in part on my emotional reaction to the book. My personal difficulty with serial-killer stories pulled that number down for me a bit, but readers who don’t have the same issues will probably enjoy it more. I hope I’ve conveyed that in the review.
Energized is a deliciously addictive romantic suspense that will have Tidewater fans old and new reading late into the night. Hannah and Niall’s story is fast-paced and exciting, thanks to Mary Behre’s gift for blending heart-pounding action with a sweet, yet steamy romance.
In Energized, the youngest “crifted” Scott sister finds her way home to Tidewater. After the death of their mother, the three Scott sisters were separated. The youngest, Hannah, grew up with two loving adoptive parents, but she wants to connect with her sisters who she hasn’t seen since she was three. However, it isn’t her sisters Hannah runs into upon reaching Tidewater, but former Marine Niall Graham, the one-night stand Hannah hasn’t been able to get out of her mind. Sparks once again fly between the two, but Niall is determined to keep his emotional distance from Hannah, especially since she doesn’t plan to remain in Tidewater for long. Fate has other plans for the two, and when Hannah has a psychometric vision of a serial killer on the loose, Niall is drawn to protect her. In Energized, the sexual tension is palpable and it was pure pleasure to watch Niall and Hannah’s chemistry practically explode off the page. Though there’s quite a bit of push-pull in their burgeoning relationship, you can’t help but be drawn into the romance. Niall is gruff and not one to let his guard down, but he’s also got a good heart and a protective soul. Hannah brings light into his world, and her innate charm and spirit make her a compelling heroine. Separately and together, Niall and Hannah are fascinating and that’s what makes Energized such an appealing read.
Threading through Energized is the serial killer plot, and Ms. Behre keeps this storyline hopping. I loved watching the dark and twisted puzzle pieces fall into place, and the additional paranormal element of Hannah’s “crift” only served to make the suspense more compelling. Add in multiple family connections and entwining relationships with secondary characters and Energized is a truly “full” book, but one that also manages to be light on its feet.
Energized is the third full-length book in the Tidewater series, but it can be read as a standalone. Past Tidewater heroes and heroines play strong supporting roles, which was a treat, but I must admit the characters who intrigued me the most were the as-yet unmatched security specialists, Ryan and Ian. Here’s hoping Ms. Behre has books in store for them, for I’d love to return to Tidewater. While I wait, I’ll definitely be re-reading Energized, for Hannah and Niall are a compelling pair I’m excited to revisit.
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Well the third book in the Tidewater trilogy turned out to be much more of a suspense novel than I expected and it was fun to finally get to know the third sister Hannah. Hannah can barely remember her natural parents but has grown up with loving adopted parents who have protected her and her amazing gift . It turns out that Hannah like her two sisters has a power that sets her apart but hers is psychometry and when she touches metal objects she literally steps into the memory of whoever previously touched it. Finally realising that the answers she seeks lie in the town of Tidewater Hannah travels there but what she finds is a true blast from the past ! Hannah had spent one amazing night in the arms of Niall a hot marine but never heard from him again. It would seem though that fate truly does have a strange sense of humour becase when Hannah meets her new boss you've guessed it , it's that very same sexy guy Niall! Ok Hannah can deal with just about anything but when she touches a knife at the restaurant and ends up in a serial killers mind it's clear that danger is an awful lot closer than anyone realises. This was an enjoyable story that started off as a romance but very quickly became a dark who done it! I. I loved trying to guess just who the killer was and thought the author did a very good job of throwing the reader off the scent at times. There are clues to follow but red herrings abound and I happily stayed up until I'd finished reading as I really wanted answers. Yes I do love a twisting tale. The relationship had an odd start and although Hannah gave Niall her trust I was a little disappointed by him but luckily as they both clearly felt an intense attraction to each other their rocky start was soon smoothed over. With the shadow of danger looming over Hannah it's not surprising that passion ignites between this couple who clearly belong together. I have no wish to give away the plot but will say that this is perhaps my personal favourite in the series and if you enjoy romantic suspense and are happy to try a paranormal twist than this series is well worth your time reading it. I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review
Energized is the third in the Tidewater series. The series focuses on three sisters who were separated when their mother died. Each book looks at one sister, her unique talents and her romance. The talents are those of the “mind” which is my favorite kind of supernatural. Their men have military and / or law enforcement backgrounds.
I thought Energized would be about the younger sister finding the two older sisters who have already reconnected with each other. It was but it felt like the more primary storyline was the romance and a murder mystery. Since I thought Niall was an idiot at the beginning and then did a bit of a 180, I didn’t like him very much. He didn’t seem to have any good relationships.
The youngest sister, Hannah, is energetic and outgoing. She is fresh out of school and trying to get established in her chosen field. Her talent gets her caught up into a serial killer mystery which is the main story. I found her interesting and mostly relatable throughout.
I would have preferred more time in Energized with the three sisters instead of the romance and serial killer plot. I knew it would have the romance and I would have liked it better if I had liked Niall more.
I am curious to see where the series goes from here. I really would have liked more time and interaction with the three sisters. So if there aren’t any more books in the series, that will be disappointing. If there are more books, I’m not sure who the romance will be – their friends, other psychic people or other law enforcement types they know?
I liked all the books in the series but didn’t love them. It is my favorite type paranormal and if it’s yours, give them a try.
This has been a tumultuous series for me as a reader. I LOVED book one and raved continuously about it but then I couldn’t even finish book two and gave up around the 50% mark of the book. Picking up Energized was something I wasn’t even sure I was going to do, but it just called to me the other day and I figured I’d at least try it. I’m so glad I did because I really enjoyed this one and felt the characters were extremely well done.
Hannah never expected her one night stand to end up being her boss a year after the fact, yet here they both are. New to town and looking for her two sisters, Hannah gets a job at a restaurant that just happens to be sitting on the same property her birth mother lived on. But her new boss is Niall, the hot Marine she shared one blistering night with. He doesn’t seem to be happy that she’s there either.
The one night stand who gave him the wrong number is now his employee and Niall knows he can never act on the attraction he still feels. The last thing the wounded soldier needs is a woman who thinks she has psychic powers that allow her to see into someones memories by touching something metal of their. He has enough on his plate trying to save the family restaurant his irresponsible younger brother is driving into the ground.
When Hannah gets a memory of a murder she’s not sure who to turn to. The cops think she’s a suspect and Niall thinks she’s crazy. She finds a kindred spirit in her coworker who sees auras but as things progress and more men turn up murdered Hannah knows she’s going to have to break the case wide open herself.
I adored the characters in Energized so much and thought Behre did an excellent job making everyone relatable and real. Niall and Hannah were an excellent couple. Niall, being a Marine just back from a tour, suffered with some PTSD when put in enclosed spaces. His fuse was a bit short, especially with his little brother, but I loved him all the same. He was adamant that he would not act on his attraction to Hannah for several reasons yet he couldn’t deny the pull she had over him.
I really loved how Hannah refused to back down even when cops were calling her a suspect in the murders she was trying so desperately to solve. Even when her visions scared her and made her physically sick, she didn’t give up. She willingly put herself in danger in order to save people she’d never met. Her quirkiness and snarky personality gave her strength when she needed it and made her vocal and funny. I loved the back and forth teasing between her and Niall even though it was subtle at times as they tried to hide their budding relationship from everyone else.
The mystery was done really well and I was totally surprised as everything is revealed at the end of the book. Though the point of Hannah being in Tidewater was to find her sisters, they really don’t play much of a part in the book making it a good standalone if a reader hasn’t read the previous two.
Inventive and exciting, the perfect mix of genres, Energized needs to be on your reading list!
Hands down the most shocking reveal in a story I've read this year.. And it wasnt just shocking it was sick, twisted, and sad.
I've been waiting for Hannah's story since the first book came out. We were given so little information about her so to finally find out who she is and what her crift was exciting. She had the gift of Psychometry which is a form of extra-sensory perception characterized by the ability to make a connection to a person from an object by making physical contact with that object.
Hannah had a great childhood with her adopted parents and helps them run their bar. One night a man who is so torn up with grief sits for hours at the bar. Hannah knew he needed a human connection that night so she takes him home for a one night stand. Months later she gets word that her two sisters are looking for her and that they live in Tidewater. Hannah eventually makes her way there but doesn't contact them right away. She instead take's a job in a local restaurant where it turns out her one night stand is co owner of.
Niall Graham was a marine when he first met Hannah. He was grieving the loss of two good friends and was a little lost at the time. He was forever grateful for what she did for him that night. Now he's back in Tidewater having to help run the family restaurant with his brother after his mother has an accident. He's pretty surly and suffers from PTSD if he's is in any type of enclosed space. He cannot believe that the new person his brother just hired is the one woman he's never been able to forget about but who he thinks stiffed him the next morning by giving him a bogus number. He's not real open to having her around at first.
Hannah ends up touching a knife in the restaurant that a killer had touched and she witnesses that person committing a murder. She continues to accidentally touch things the killer has through the story and this person was sick in the head and we get a front row seat to some twisted stuff.
I've enjoyed all the books in this series and had been looking forward to all 3 sisters finally reuniting. I was just a little disappointed on how long that took in this book to finally happen. I think it would be cool to have a book where all three sisters have to use their abilities together to solve a crime or murder. Hopefully this isnt the end of the series but if it is it was a good paranormal romantic suspense series and I look forward to seeing what's next from this author.
She’s searching for a sign... Hannah Halloran has always believed in her gift. The things she sees through her psychic touch have never led her wrong before. Not when they led her to an unforgettable night with a sexy Marine at a bar. Not when she felt a need to leave her home and find the sisters she barely knows. And not now, when she is an unwilling witness to a brutal murder... He’s ready to show her... All Niall Graham wants is some peace. He’s recovering from the horrors of war, struggling to save his family’s restaurant, and desperate to forget Hannah, the beautiful woman who left him with memories of a mind-blowing night together and a bogus phone number. But a quiet life is hard to manage—especially when Hannah strides back into his restaurant with the news that a serial killer is on the loose and lurking closer than anyone could have guessed.
My Review: The Tidewater series for me is a close resemblance to Christine Feehans Ghostwalker series for me, its got the tough as nails heros and the heart driven heroines along with all the bad guy and long lost family scenario. Although I wish we had gotten more of the family story that we got in Guarded I still really enjoyed this story. Behre has fantastic writing and she creates a wonderful story with building suspense from beginning to end. I liked Hannah and Niall together because they're multi dimensional and even with all the friction between them there's still that underlining magnetism between them that draw them together. Energized is fun, its exciting and a really great book.
“Energized” by Mary Behre is part of the ‘Tidewater’ paranormal series that is set in an unusual town in Virginia. The tale centers around Hannah Halloran, a woman who has the unusual talent of metal psychometry, allowing her to relive another’s experiences by touching something metallic that they have held. A searing one-night stand with a mourning Marine has unexpected consequences when she comes into contact with him again in his hometown, but neither expects the ties that come to bind them, with both positive, but also possibly deadly, results.
This suspense story combines an eerie murder mystery with remarkable psychic phenomena and rounds it off with family drama and characters who are dealing with their own sets of past trauma and emotional wounds. Despite the fact that it is part of a series, there is no problem reading this as a stand-alone volume, but I think it would be better if the connections to the other stories were laid out a little better because one gets such a short glimpse of those who were featured in the prior novels. Despite my guess about the villain, there were several unexpected twists and the tension nicely escalates throughout the book and I enjoyed watching the main characters deepen their relationship although I thought the heroine was a little slow to act on the information she had received about her family. This was an entertaining and chilling tale and I think that anyone who likes a good mystery with an intriguing psychic twist will enjoy it!
Great Series! This is a great series; this is the third book in the Tidewater series by Mary Behre. Hannah Halloran has a gift, if she touches metal then she gets visions. This book can be read as a standalone, but once you read one you will want to go back and read the other books. She works in her parents bar and spends an unforgettable night with a sexy Marine after a vision she gets from touching his keys. She leaves him her number, but he never calls. She finds out that she is adopted and her real sisters are looking for her. So she takes a trip to Tidewater to meet her sisters. She ends up finding a job at a local restaurant and the owner happens to be her sexy Marine from her one night stand, Niall Graham. Niall and Hannah are trying to fight their attraction, and to make matters worse there is a serial killer on the loose and she keeps getting visions and feeling of the killer. It is up to Hannah, her new found sisters, and friends to find the real killer. This book has it all, romance, mystery, and suspense. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Initial Thoughts: I think I liked this one better than the previous novels. Though it started with a lust at first sight/one-night stand, I enjoyed how they grew to love each other in spite of the all-encompassing lust. Niall and Hannah were a fascinating couple and I enjoyed their journey. The mystery of the serial killer was gripping and surprising. My previous complaint about police procedures in the first novel is absent here. I do love a good "Plan B" though and enjoyed how the police procedures and such were much more realistic. I don't know how Ms. Behre could continue to the series since the three main sisters have their HEA's but there was a fascinating clue/foreshadowing element that gives me hope that there is more to come. I hope to see more of the three sister's happily-ever-afters as well as more of Ian and Ryan (they are just awesome). This series seems to get better and better. Mary does it again, only she keeps getting better! I could not put this book down for several reasons. Hannah, the third sister is finally in the picture and travels to Tidewater, where she can finally reunite with Shelly and Jules. Karma, my favorite character so far, is back and becomes a quick friend to Hannah, also helping to get Hannah and Niall get together. And the page turning mystery and suspense of who is going around murdering the men of Tidewater! I must admit, Mary Behre threw a curveball I never saw coming with that surprise ending!
Solid middle of the road paranormal read. I read the first of the series and skipped the second and didn't feel that I really missed anything. The heroine's psychometry worked well for the story here. I did guess the villain but there was a decent red herring. The hero's actions sometimes seemed forced for the story and I thought he was a total ass to his brother most of the time. Jimminy. May or may not go in with the series.
We Loved... ♥The Hot Marine When we sat down to make this list of Things We Love About Energized by Mary Behre, we kept coming back to Niall. He's hot. He's authentic. He's a sexy, brooding marine. He's just...unf. We love him, and we think you'll love him too.
♥The Setting Kudos to Mary Behre for painting the picture of Energized with such clarity and detail, we truly felt we were there.
♥The Story We don't usually go for suspense novels, but we're really glad we picked this one up. Such a page-turner! We couldn't put it down.
♥The Un-predictability Like we said, we don't read too many suspense books, but this one had us on the edge of our seats until the end. It wasn't predictable--at all. We seriously didn't know what was going to happen.
We Didn't Love... The Build-Up We really liked Niall and Hannah, but at times we felt like they were forced. We wanted them to be...undeniable, but we just didn't feel that way. They had chemistry, but it took too long for them to figure their shit out.
The Paranormal Aspect We know. This is just personal preference, and of course--that's kind of the point of this book. Though Hannah's psychic ability was believable, it just wasn't very authentic to us. Not sure why.
Energized by Mary Behre was a fast-paced, interesting read with great descriptions and a sexy marine that we couldn't help falling for.
Energized is my first book by this author and my first book in this series. This also happens to be my first romance with some paranormal elements. I liked it but I didn’t love it. The book is about Hannah and Niall. Hannah has psychometric abilities which allow her to glimpse the memories of others when she comes in contact with metal objects. Niall is a soldier returned home with memories that nobody wants to have. When the two meet, Hannah sees into Niall’s memories and offer him some much needed comfort. They spend one night together and because of a misunderstanding don’t meet up again until months later when Hannah shows up in Tidewater, Niall’s hometown in search of her long lost sisters. Some other stuff happens, Hannah is the psychometric witness to a serial killer’s madness and we have ourselves a story. Hannah and Niall are trying to sort out their issues while tracking down a serial killer.
I kind of liked Hannah and Niall together but there was something about the writing of this book that I didn’t love. It was just too blunt for my taste. I mean I just had an overall sense that it could have been more nuanced which would have given the characters the appearance of greater complexity. I got where Hannah was coming from as she tried to draw Niall out but I always have mixed feelings about a heroine doing that. Yes, Niall was damaged and needed to be loved back to health but there is a limit on my tolerance for a heroine who puts up with that brand of BS. I think on balance it worked in this book because I was rooting for Hannah and Niall as a couple.
I think where things went a little sideways for me was in the clutter of the book. There was the story of the restaurant and the issues Niall was having with his brother. And just for fun, we get a glimpse into the brother’s POV so we can see him struggling with issues related to his sexuality. Then there were the other restaurant employees and their sub-stories. Like between Hannah and the psychometric flashes and the other girl who was reading people’s aura’s, the author was giving me a lot, maybe too much. And of course we can’t leave out crazy azz Mercy stabbing people up here and there to free them from the burden of life. We also see into Mercy’s POV. In the end all the POVs and the sub-stories just got to be a little too much clutter for me. I was interested in the story between Hannah and Niall and while all the other stuff was cool too, I just wasn’t here for all of that. So in the end I walked away feeling like this was a decent book with a pretty good mystery/suspense but it just wasn’t what I was looking for in the story.
Energized by Mary Behre is the 3rd book in her Tidewater series. I have been a fan of this series from the start, and Energized was the best one so far. It had a bit of everything…romance, suspense, mystery, fun, sexy hot couple & wonderful secondary characters.
Hannah Halloran is our heroine, and we meet her early on when she is tending a bar in her home town in Ohio. She meets our hero, Niall Graham, who is passing by. Niall is a marine, coming off duty after serving a difficult time in Afghanistan. Hannah is physic, with the gift of going into the mind of anyone, if she touches an object belonging that person. When serving Niall a beer, Hannah is automatically in his memory of the difficult time he is having. She is attracted to him, and also feels his pain. They both end up in a one night stand, which neither can forget.
Many months later, Hannah is on a quest to meet her long lost sisters in Tidewater. For the time she expects to be there, she applies for a job in a restaurant, and is hired by one of the owners. Later, Hannah is shocked to discover that Niall is one of the owners, and he too is shocked; enough so that he does not want to hire her. He tried to call in Ohio, since he couldn’t get her out of his mind, but she gave him a wrong number, with him assuming she wasn’t interested in him. Niall agrees to let her work there temporarily, and gives her a hard time. Karma, who also works at the restaurant, and was one of our heroines in the earlier books, befriends Hannah. While Karma helps her, she discovers Hannah’s psychic ability, while she is in throes of living in a vision.
What follows is an exciting and suspenseful mystery of a serial killer, who Hannah only knows as Mercy. The police department doesn’t believe Hannah about her vision, and when a body is found, they arrest her. Fortunately, Niall and Karma come to her rescue, but the race is on to find the killer before the murderer picks her next victim.
Niall realizes his feelings for Hannah are real, and he tries to protect her, as the danger escalates. During this adventure, the romance between Niall and Hannah becomes very hot, as their chemistry is off the wall. Hannah was a fun heroine, when she wasn’t in the midst of her violent visions. Friends we have met in previous books, we help Niall and Hannah in a wild and pulse pounding last third of the book, which will hit too close to home.
Mary Behre has given us a wonderful, fun, exciting story in Energized. If you have not read the Tidewater series, I wholly recommend you do so. This is a fun series that has everything to enjoy.
This series has been a good one. It's got some paranormal elements, and this is the third sister, Hannah who has visions when she touches certain objects. When I say Paranormal Romance, I think we all think shifters or vampires. This is more along the lines of psychic gifts and ghostly visitors. There's also a suspenseful element that definitely had me guessing for the whole book.
Hannah has gotten visions since she can remember, and since being separated from her sisters when she was younger, her visions have never steered her wrong. That's why when she has a vision leading her to Tidewater, she heads back. But she drags her feet once there, not actually wanting to meet her sisters, who have both made their way back to Tidewater as well.
Hannah needs to earn some money, so she picks up a serving job at a restaurant. This is where the mystery picks up. she's washing dishes and when she touches a knife, she "sees" a murder. But she tries to hide her "quirks" from her new boss. Her new boss who coincidentally is someone she's met before.
Niall is just trying to regain his footing after leaving the Marines, and he's taken over the family restaurant. But his brother is less than helpful, his restaurant should be thriving but isn't, and he can't stop thinking about his new hire. Especially since he and Hannah had a night of red hot passion but she gave him a wrong number. Now that she's back in his life, he's annoyed she gave him a fake number, but he still can't get her out of his mind.
For her part, Hannah didn't realize she'd given him a wrong number, but more than her hunky boss, this vision of a murder keeps haunting her. The big question is whether she can get Niall to believe her.
The main thing that bothered me with this book-the fact that the sisters have been looking for her, and she knows they're there, but she doesn't want to go through with it. I felt like it was such an important part of the past couple books, that it shouldn't have been pushed aside like it was.
The mystery was well-done, because I sure didn't catch on! I like how Niall believed Hannah early on, and that the Big Misunderstanding wasn't dragged out. I've enjoyed this series, in general, and I like how each sister has her own memories of their mother, but when they put all of them together, the memories paint a bigger picture. I wouldn't mind seeing more books set in Tidewater, I think it would be fun.
Energized is a fast read with characters I liked, who meant well and tried to help others. Hannah, the central character seems like the type of person I would want to get to know. I received Energized through a goodreads giveaway.
Mourning the death of his fellow Marines, the hero meets a stunning kind-hearted bartender one night in Chicago. The heroine can see visions via metal objects and when she sees how desperately the handsome quiet man needs her, she brings him home. They spend one night together before the hero leaves to go back to Virginia. She left him with her phone number but then the hero is hurt to realizes it's a wrong number. They think to never see each other again. Then fate intervenes.
The heroine is in Virginia to find her estranged sisters when she takes up a job as a waitress in a local restaurant. There, much to her surprise, she finds out that her boss is the one-night stand. She's giddy with the idea of rekindling their relationship but is hurt when he makes it clear that they're to be nothing but employer and employee. But their chemistry is enough to make that idea less than impossible. On top of that, the heroine keeps suffering from visions showing her a murder and a woman serial killer activating in the small town.
I think this was nice but nothing special. I really loved the hero. He was trained to be a gentleman who apologized when he swore in front of a woman and who was stern and literal to the heroine's carefree hippy attitude. They were so difference but opposites attract and they certainly attracted to each other. I thought the plot was okay but nothing marvelous or unexpected. I did like the idea of a female villain- it was a change from other suspense romance novels. But it had a very level pace without many spikes in intensity or intrigue. The rekindling of the hero and heroine was hot and probably the only 'passionate' scene in the book besides their original meeting. I found myself complacent with the story-neither in love or in hate.
**In the new Tidewater novel by the author of *Guarded*, a kiss between strangers draws both into unexpected danger and unforgettable desire . . .**
*She’s searching for a sign . . .*
Hannah Halloran has always believed in her gift. The things she sees through her psychic touch have never led her wrong before. Not when they led her to an unforgettable night with a sexy marine at a bar. Not when she felt a need to leave her home and find the sisters she barely knows. And not now, when she is an unwilling witness to a brutal murder . . .
*He’s ready to show her . . .*
All Niall Graham wants is some peace. He’s recovering from the horrors of war, struggling to save his family’s restaurant, and desperate to forget Hannah, the beautiful woman who left him with memories of a mind-blowing night together and a bogus phone number. But a quiet life is hard to manage—especially when Hannah strides back into his restaurant with the news that a serial killer is on the loose and lurking closer than anyone could have guessed . . .
When I discovered Mary Behre I was delighted to find an author who does paranormal mysteries without vampires or werewolves; instead the Tidewater novels explore characters that all share various psychic capabilities in a very realistic format. Energized is Hannah and Niall's story. It is not often that I am unable to follow the clues to help uncover the murderer, but this tale had me slack jawed at the reveal. I appreciated that the author left clues that had me pondering who the murderer could be without any blatant disclosure. Energized fulfilled my preference for paranormal mysteries by telling an interesting, well paced story. I am anxious for the next installment!
I received an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
All Niall Graham wants is some peace but a quiet life is hard to come by especially when Hannah strides into his restaurant with the news that a serial killer is on the loose and striking a little too close to home in this adrenaline pumping romantic suspense. The Tidewater books are always full of vivid imagery and Mary Behre has a gift for providing vibrant and detailed descriptions of the psychic elements that makes it easy for the reader to imagine and adds an air of believability and along with the intriguing events ensures that the readers can’t put the book down until they have read every last word and I certainly hope to visit the people of Tidewater again.
