Summer of Our True Colours

Rate this book
** A grumpy/sunshine summer romance that will have your heart pounding**

Releasing JUNE 2025

After twenty-three years of playing nice, strait-laced Phoebe Turner decides it's time to escape to Greece to simply... play.

Two weeks of sun, sea, sand, and string bikinis are all she needs to forget about her parents' impending divorce, her sick grandpa, and that rotten, cheating ex of hers.

She definitely doesn't need handsome Lotharios waiting to break her heart again. Especially not the likes of Henry Cohen, who happens to be staying in the same hotel. Henry, with his brooding stare, incredible six-pack, too cool attitude, and the fact that he, quite clearly, doesn’t want or need Phoebe in return. In fact, he can't stand to be around her.

Too bad for them that attraction doesn't care about circumstances—only those longing stares, tender touches, and the thrill of chasing the forbidden.

With too many secrets trying to keep them apart, it's only a matter of time before the temptation becomes impossible to resist, and soon enough, Phoebe is laying in the sand, staring up at Henry with wide eyes as he presses his body closer to hers.

All their promises are about to be broken, because once Henry claims her, there's no going back for either of them, no matter what the consequences of their summer fling throws their way, or who gets hurt in the process.

She had no spine, he had no brain. There was no chemistry, just her narrating fake love scenes in her head while he kept being a jerk to her.

FMC - Pheobe: 4 🌟
MMC - Henry: 4 🌟
SPICE: 🌶 🌶

LIKES: Henry starts off as a grumpy character, but you come to learn that he's quite honorable, and very loyal to those closest to him. Pheobe found just what she needed with Henry, even though their first meeting was rocky. Separately, their characters didn't stand out a whole lot to me, but together, they made for a fun, summery romance read.

Also, big high five to the author for introducing a possible third act breakup moment, but solving the issue by having the characters talk it out like adults with no huge drama!

DISLIKES: It took me quite a while before the book hooked me in, maybe around the halfway point. Overall, I'm glad I stuck it out, but I never really had an emotional connection to the main characters, and I wasn't a big fan of Pheobe's friends at first (I grew to like them as the story progressed). In fact, Jace is the one character I really liked!

There was a lot packed into the last 3 or 4 chapters, some of which I felt were unnecessary. It made for a more emotional ending, but it ruined it a smidge for me right when I was beginning to feel like the story was wrapping up well.

Thank you to Tales & Teacups and author Vicki James for the opportunity to read this ARC 💕

Wow, just wow . Henry Cohen is the epitome of a book boyfriend, & he most definitely brought the sass , & confidence out of Phoebe, & I was there for it all .

Both characters had people around them that loved them , but both had things happen to them to knock them sideways, & make them feel alone in the world .

Just one collision set them on a journey that both of them tried to ignore . Convincing themselves that they hated the other one …. But why could they not stop thinking about each other ? Trying to stay away from each other never worked , the force that connected them from the first day they met , always brought them back together.

They always think of others before themselves, but together they learn to think of their own happiness . They want forever , but can they have it ?

Such a damn good read , not to be missed .

Vicki James knows her stuff

If I could give this book more stars I would.

I’m utterly in love with Henry Cohen.

Phoebe Turner, decides after a horrible break up, that a girls only holiday is just what she needs. But never did she expect to literally bump into Henry on the day they arrive.

Henry brings his friends on holiday to mend a rift between them, guys only. Sun sea and partying. But getting off on the wrong foot with Phoebe sets the tone for both of them being shoved together in the most AMAZING WAY. By agreeing to a summer fling.

Like I said, I’m utterly in love with Henry, he tries to stay away from Phoebe, but clearly it doesn’t work. They start off hating then liking then loving each other. I can’t even begin to describe how much I loved reading their summer fling develop in to something real. Even though I cried towards the end, when their holidays came to an end.

What a perfect book for summer! This has made me want to book my summer holiday now! I loved the whole holiday experience of the book and it really made me feel that I was there in Mykonos.

The 1st meeting between Henry and Phoebe was intense and then their friends all meeting was just meant to be! I loved the instant attraction between the pair but also the fact they both tried to fight it! The underlying tension and heat between them was sizzling!

This book had some angst as both Henry and Phoebe had issues from their past they needed to get through. It wasn’t plain sailing and both had to fight their past and also their own belief that they didn’t deserve the happiness. Once they connected - wow!! Hot hot hot!

Overall I really really enjoyed this book. I haven’t read a summer romance in a while and this was exactly what I needed. I read this over a sunny weekend in my garden and I couldn’t have chosen a more prefect book. Grab this book and a drink of your choice and immerse yourself in the most perfect summer read!

*Sigh*
The chemistry. The emotion. The angst. Absolute fucking perfect

Phoebe & Henry have stolen my heart and I’m quite happy to let them keep it.
Books like Summer of our true colours are the SOLE reason I read at all.
To experience the magic that can be created with just 26 letters. To have unexpected emotions pulled from you from and just be left in awe from a love story written so effortlessly.

Vicki James shares her life behind the scenes on her social media so we see the struggles she faces and see what she’s going through but when reading her words you can feel it. Every emotion she shows reflects back at you ten fold in the words she writes.

This is a beautiful comeback for Vic, it’s the perfect love story with just the right amount of heart & heat
I am absolutely wrecked after finishing and I know Phoebe and Henry will stick with me for a long time!

“you want me forever? “Even longer than that.”

I love this authors books!

Vicki understands perfectly how to weave a story that will pull you in, wrap itself around you and keep you enthralled until the very end.

Both the MC have sworn off the other sex, until of course they meet each other. Then let the “hate” banter fly.
Henry was hot, even when he was a grumpy pain in the ar&e. Phoebe was the sort of friend you’ve always wanted to do life by your side. And the island of Mykonos lent the story the beautiful background setting.
What are you waiting for? Get lost in the ultimate summer romance.

For a fuller reaction check out my video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/lPKbLNXe47w

I found this book from the author's tiktok and immediately bought it back in July, saving it for when I go on my girls holiday to Greece in September, thinking it would be perfect for then. And damn if I wasn't right! Romance is usually not my kind of genre but I like it from time to time and this was a perfect cosy romance.

I'm glad for the dual POV of Phoebe and Henry as we get to see both sides and although I was expecting a 'meet cute' Henry is a complete douche when Phoebe first runs into him, which of course makes the resulting events even better as barriers begin to break down for both characters. Although I did cringe at some of the cheesy dialogue further in the book, I found that the most unrealistic thing about this is that no matter how long the girls stayed in bed in the morning they were always able to get the same three sunbeds both near the pool and the bar. This was a lovely read to have with me as who doesn't like a little delusional, swoonworthy holiday romance to lose yourself in while relaxing in the Greek sun

such a sweet read 😍😍😍😍

Phoebe, can’t believe what she’s hearing from her soon-to-ex boyfriend mouth………😳😳😳
and after that her and her bff’s Bailey and Rhea decide a two week vacation is in order 😜

Henry Cohen and his bff’s Andy and Jace have just arrived for a two week vacation, in which Henry feels he ‘needs’ to plead for Andy’s forgiveness……but why???????

When these six end up at the same resort, they all have different ideas on how the no boy no girl rules for themselves are going to work……but Cohen doesn’t need to worry as he’s just going to be his ‘moody’ self and let Andy earn his trust back right??????until…….

This book is such a sweet heartfelt read that will have you routing for Phoebe and Cohen, but what happens when the vacation comes to an end?????

This is a defo must read, what with ‘Angel eyes’ and RTM 🥰🥰🥰🥰

And boom Vicki James is back baby!
Yeh another fantastic read by her and one that you don't want to miss out on.
Phoebe heads on a girls holiday needing to chill out and re fresh her batteries after many emotional issues at home.
The last thing she wants or needs is a male so she imposes a man ban to her 2 weeks away. But will that change when she literally bumps into moody and grumpy Cohen on day one?
These guys together were just fire! The chemistry was sparking all over from the first instant and never dulled from start to end.
Loved seeing Cohen come into himself and actually let someone in, and also wanted to throttle his supposed best mate Andy a time or 2 while reading aswell LOL
Vicki you smashed it with this story for sure!

This book felt like a fun little romantic summer holiday movie. Lots of swoon worthy moments that I really enjoyed. I love the forbidden love/secret relationship trope 😍
The only reason I didn’t rate it higher was because I had a hard time with some of the language in the book feeling a pit cheesie and it pulled me out of the story a bit at times. Other than that this was a perfect summer read ☀️

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Phoebe and Henry's story !!
Vicki James really knows how to make you swoon with her words and create characters that you endear to.
This is a holiday romance that turns into something more than Phoebe and Henry/Cohen could have expected.
Phoebe has been hurt and recently split up fom her cheating boyfriend,so decides with her two besties to go on Holiday to Mykanos in Greece.
Phoebe makes one rule for herself on this Summer Vacation and that is NO men.
Day 1 Phoebe bumps into a handsome stranger,a very grumpy and moody handsome stranger...Henry Cohen.!!
When her friends Rhea and Bailey strike up a friendship with Henry's friends Andy and Jace...The 6 of them spend all the the 2 weeks holiday together, much to Phoebe and Henry's despair and discomfort.
Now Henry is also in Greece to mend the friendship between him and Andy, because Henry did something that hurt him and his family.
So Henry was on his best behaviour which meant that he could not engage with any woman...But both Henry and Phoebe stir something within eachother and the hatred they project to one another is a complete smokescreen...Because deep down they wanted eachother and one night they completely obliterate the line they both said they wouldn't cross.
What starts off as hate develops into a beautiful friendship and passionate love story between Phoebe and Henry.
A romance that they keep a secret from their friends, they pretend to dislike one another in public...But in private they are one HOT,steamy and romantic couple it is actually a dream of a love story.
But all good things must come to an end and Phoebe and Henry's ending is explosive and emotional.
When the 2 weeks are over is it also over for Phoebe and Henry?
I LOVE Vicki James's words she can make you laugh and cry all in one story,it is always such a delight to read her books.
The Summer of Our True Colours is superbly written by Vicki and it is definately a page turner as she takes you on a mental journey to Greece. With romance, desire, love and a sprinkle of sunshine this story is a Magnificent read.
I absolutely Loved it.

Vicki James absolutely wrecked me here. With the feels. With the chemistry. With the angst. With the criminally good writing. Summer of Our True Colours is a heartbreaking and at the same time, healing journey of two perfectly imperfect souls. Phoebe and Henry came to Mykonos With their respective group of friends to have a cleansing vacation. None of them wanted love or lust to disrupt but both of them actually needed love to put their pieces together.

* contemporary romance
* grumpy sunshine
* enemies to lovers
* forced proximity
* vacation fling
* all the angst

Phoebe has escaped her cheating ex and this trip with her best friends is all about fresh start. Henry came to make amend with his best friend Andy who is like his brother too. They have an insane pull from the first meeting of their eyes. And their friends got somehow coupled up for the vacation too. Henry was all grumpy and brooding and harsh because he didn't like how Phoebe affected him. She is forbidden for a very important reason but she just makes him want to break all the rules. Like Phoebe's no men rule. She is such a beautiful combination of sweet and sassy. Her ex broke her soul and she definitely didn't need anyone else to break her more. The push and pull was so intense. And heartaching. Slowly they got to know each other and their resistance broke down. Obviously it became more than a vacation fling. I just loved how epic, how all consuming, how heartfelt their connection is. My heart broke for Henry. Overwhelmed by his grief, guilt and shame..he didn't think about his happiness. Phoebe was his sin and redemption. Phoebe has never been worshipped by a man like Henry did. The writing was ethereal. I felt going through emotional hell and breaking down myself and I loved every second of it. This is a treat for angst lovers.

I reviewed an early copy voluntarily

It took me almost a week to find the right words to write a review for this book, and even then, I don't think I'll be able to do it justice.

Vicki knocks me off my feet with her words, every book of hers I've read has done it, but Henry and Phoebe... they've stuck with me.

The whole story pulls you in from the get-go. You're fully immersed and invested in the characters and their path. The setting of Mykonos is honestly a character in its own right. Then there's Henry... He surprised me, in the best possible way, and I honestly couldn't get enough of him. He's perfect in the most flawed way possible, sweeping your feet from under you before you're ready for it.

The words are lyrical and pull you along so effortlessly that you feel like you're in Greece with the gang, sitting poolside and drinking piña coladas, chatting about boys and books. Vicki has a beautiful way of writing these characters, the surroundings, and the chemistry... oh, the chemistry. It jumps off the page at you and wraps you up in it, constantly leaving you wanting more. I was even invested in the secondary characters, as invested in their stories as I was in Henry and Phoebe's. I couldn't get enough. I still want more, and it's been almost a week!

This book has everything you want in a Summer read, but it's also going to hit perfectly in the Winter when you're longing for the sun and the beach. Grab it now— don't hesitate!! I can't wait to jump in and give it a reread... Believe me, you're going to thank me when you get your hands on this one!

This book, ladies and gentlemen, is without a doubt one of my top reads of 2025!! OH MY GOODNESS it is going to take some time for me to get over this unputdownable story – and I’m doubting if this is even possible! I literally devoured Henry and Phoebe’s story in one sitting. There was nothing that was going to tear me away from my Kindle… absolutely nothing. When I pick up a book written by Vicki James, I always have high expectations, and she exceeds them EVERY SINGLE TIME!!

Phoebe and Henry *sigh* - they are a couple's goals. I connected immediately with them both which meant I was heavily invested in their journeys and every single emotion I experienced alongside them was heightened. The emotions - I love nothing more than to feel all the emotions when reading a book, and boy did I feel them throughout this story. Having tissues to hand would be my advice because you will need them. Henry and Phoebe are EVERYTHING. They have amazing chemistry. The banter between them is incredible to witness. I would never have been able to deny acting on their attraction to each other. And all this takes place in a setting that the author’s words enabled me to visualise perfectly.

I’m struggling to find the words for this review that Summer of Our True Colours deserves. Be prepared to hand over your heart to Henry – he has mine!

I highly recommend Summer of Our True Colours to you to read. The storyline, the emotion, the angst and the chemistry are absolutely perfect.

Summer of Our True Colours
By Vicki James

Over coming tragedy is difficult, especially when the people around you think you have it all together.

“It was the same old, same old. Too bruised to be carefree. Too angry to be thoughtful. Too bitter to be gentle. Too tired to even care anymore.”

Henry and Phoebe both have things from their pasts that they are trying to work out, and when their friends (separately) suggest a trip away, it seems like the perfect chance to mend their hearts. But a run in, a few choice words, and two weeks in paradise changes things for everyone.

“ “Don't get it twisted. I don't mean I never wish you'd been born. I'm very glad you were. All I mean is that you're a complication I didn't need on this trip when I'm trying to be cold, aloof, and distant, which isn’t working because you're kinda perfect, and that's hard to stay away from no matter how well trained in being closed off a guy is.” “

She’s back! Vicki has done it again! I really, REALLY enjoyed this book. Vicki has a classy way of giving us a hot romance and her words hold us close to the book. Henry and Phoebe are amazing characters, giving so much to the story, I felt like I was watching a movie!

“I wanted to do all of it, everything I shouldn’t, and I didn’t care who saw anymore or who even cared.”

When you finish a book and know you have to write a review but struggle to express how it made you feel, this book might have taken some time coming, but it was oh so worth the wait. Vicki has a remarkable way with words, and the introduction of a character like Henry is nothing short of amazing—everyone will love him. You can always tell when a story comes from the heart, and Vicki consistently pours her soul into her work.

Phoebe Turner decides that after a terrible breakup, a girls-only holiday is exactly what she needs. She sets one rule for the trip: "No men." However, everything changes when she accidentally bumps into the grumpy Henry.

Henry Cohen is on holiday with his friends to mend a rift—just guys enjoying sun, sea, and parties. However, starting off on the wrong foot with Phoebe leads to an unexpected and amazing connection as they agree to a secret summer fling. They are both broken in some sort of way, but this holiday slowly mends them.

Along with the two Main Characters, you have a nice mix of the four friends who went with them. See what they get up to as well.

Five stars are just not enough for this fantastic story. I urge you to read the Acknowledgements; they are as beautifully written as the book.

Summer of our true colours
By vicki james
4 stars

What a beautiful story and so well written. A great book to read in the summer. It had me wishing I was sat on a beach somewhere with a cocktail in hand. I knew I was going to love this book as soon as Henry started being an arse, talk about grumpy, macho men that makes your blood pressure sky rocket, let me tell you Henry has shot to the top of that list. I really liked Phoebe's character, she wasn't annoying like some female characters can be. She was a girls girl with a soft side and she only got stronger throughout the book. I absolutely loved the banter between the two, it’s that love hate banter that makes for the best read. Both characters had past issues that they were dealing with and the summer holiday was supposed to be their “single” time. Their meeting was a chance encounter but turned into something a whole lot more. Question is could they make it work in the real world. I absolutely loved this book and what a great start to my summer reads. A summer fling in mykonos what else could you need. Would definitely recommend.

What can I say other than I loved it. I was immediately hooked on this book. You have your grumpy MMC who bumps into the FMC who just got out of a bad breakup she didn't see coming and let's just say the first meeting didn't go so well. Just when they think they won't have to see each other the rest of the time of their vacation, the people they came with start hanging out. And that's when it starts getting good! Love a great "I'm going to pretend I hate you but really I fell in love at first sight" book. The tension it creates. Yum 😋.
The only thing that cost it to lose a star for me was there was one really good open door spicy chapter and the rest was closed door. It was like I was given candy and then it was snatched back. I need the spice!

No plane ticket? No problem. This summer romance will whisk you away on a two-week vacation to Mykonos. The MMC, Henry Cohen, is tall, dark, handsome, ripped, British, brooding, protective, and PERFECT. The dialogue between the characters is so realistic and makes you feel like you're on vacation with them. The tension between the two main characters is palpable as soon as Henry walks onto the page, and I found myself counting down the days in their two-week vacation until these enemies turned into lovers.

Spice level? 2/5...Two steamy scenes followed by some closed-door references. So you can enjoy the book on the beach no matter how many people are around.

Tropes:
Summer Romance
Enemies to Lovers
He Only Thaws For Her
She Challenges Him Like No Other
Insane Chemistry
Secret Lovers
No One Else Knows
A Pact That Can’t Be Broken

"Remember this moment. My version of telling you I'm highlighting my time with you and storing it away to come back to when the days back home are rainy, and you're no longer there."

"I'll stay until we run out of time."

"It may have been infatuation that led me to you so quickly, but it's loving you that's making me stay."

Another triumph from Vic. Just a beautiful love story and a great Summer read. I adored grumpy Henry-he was even swoony when her was being an ar$e. Phoebe was a fantastic female lead, strong, funny, yet also vulnerable. The romance was the perfect level of 'aahh' really making my little heart thump wildly and my stomach clench in places. This book will evoke many memories of summer romances which is a testament to Vic's talent as a writer.

'Summer of Our True Colours' is the epitome of 'worth the wait'.

I love books that make me feel and this one does it in spades. The reader is taken on a journey of discovery—along with characters—that brings a lump to your throat and a smile to your face.
It has everything I love... push and pull, angst, love and hate, and two main characters battling with each other and themselves.

Henry is the perfect alphahole and Phoebe the quintessential likeable heroine who grows in confidence throughout the book (thanks to our hero).

The words are just 'chefs kiss' beautiful and swoony, and I'm so happy I've finally got the Vicki James fix that I've been craving for so long.

The girl is back with a vengeance with SOOTC, and I'm so happy I get to read her again.
