"No," he whispered to the darkness. "That's not my name anymore."
Beast knows what he is—a slave, trained to kill, conditioned to obey, stripped of choice. For years, he lived only to serve.
Until now.
On his way to be sold back to the arenas, his only chance at freedom lies in convincing Olira — the woman who owns his life and sees him as nothing but a dangerous, mindless tool — to let him win it.
But what he asks from her has a price, and Beast has nothing left to bargain with. Nothing except the dark shape lurking inside him.
A voice that promises him vengeance and power.
A voice that wants out.
When nightmares turn real and enemies close in, Beast must decide what he's willing to become. The only thing worse than being owned — is becoming something no one can control. ---
Beast of Zarall is the second book of Twilight of Blood series. Perfect for fans of grimdark fantasy, morally complex characters, and worlds that will hook you in. Please note this is a dark fantasy for adults and deals with heavy subject matter that some readers may find triggering. Please refer to the full list of content warnings, available on author's website.
Eddy B. Rose started her writing career when she was in third grade. Her first readers were a small but dedicated group of her classmates who stopped by at her desk at recess to read the next chapter of the story she wrote on a notebook.
Eddy lives in Queensland, Australia with her husband, toddler, and her two German Shepherds (the original babies) Kara and Kal-El. She enjoys getting up at 4.30am in the morning to write.
I powered through this as if my life depended on it! After reading Lion of Zarall I was hooked & now I feel empty inside especially since I have to wait for the 3rd installment of the series. Cleverly written & well thought out, I felt betrayal & hatred & love & hope all at the same time. Things are left tense & up in the air... Talk about a cliff hanger!
I think I need a moment as my head, stomach and heart are still swirling with every emotion known to humankind after finishing 'Beast of Zarall'.
It was incredible. It was bloody. It was ruthless and brutal, and I didn't think Eddy could put Beast through anything more traumatic and then - BAM. She could.
I could not put this book down, I HAD to know what happened next and I didn't guess it, even for a second. You are kept on your toes the entire time and the introduction of new POV's and characters (one abhorrent but important) was so well done and needed to ensure Beast and Olira's story was not lost.
Book two picks up where book one left us, the Beast and Olira on the road - Beast craving his freedom, his trust in Olira fragile and his voice only beginning to emerge. Enter an exiled Prince with his two loyal companions, the new Prince with death on his mind and an army at his back, and a demonic entity that whispers secrets and offers unlimited power. It's when all of these characters clash, making decisions around the Beast while giving him no choices that things get intense.
If you love:
- gladiators and arena style fighting - brutality and gore - all is hopeless vibes (but with a glimmer of hope) - owner-slave dynamics - trauma and loss - betrayals - action packed - royal usurpers - supernatural forces
Then dive into this series and become lost in this amazing world - where one pureblood slave could change the world. I read this book prior to the official publishing date.
I've had the pleasure of receiving this ARC in exchange for my honest review. Lion of Zarall was one of my favourite reads of 2024, having said that, Beast of Zarall was bloody, it was dark and it was NOT what I was expecting AT ALL, definitely a heart attack inducer. There I was, expecting that our MMC was finally going to have some peace, but oh boy, I was deadly wrong. The amount of tension and betrayal kept me on the edge of my seat the entire book and I loved every second of it! The characters are masterfully done, their psychological construction and development is so well accomplished and believable. I cannot wait to put my hands on the 3rd installment, but please Eddy, be kind to our Beast!!
This book put me through an emotional ringer. Sometimes as I read I like to write myself little notes about the book (helps me write my reviews later on) and my notes were all the emotions that I was feeling while reading. I felt hope, heartbreak, betrayal, shattered and those were just a few. This series is a reminder of why I fell in love with reading. Stories that transport you to another world and immerse you fully in the characters and their emotions. It’s beautifully written with so much thought. Here’s to freedom & hopefully somewhat of a happy ending for Beast! Or not? And my heart gets ripped out a third time in book 3?
If you want to have your heart ripped continuously open and cry, this is the series for you.
This last note is for Eddy Rose and Eddy Rose only: if Lion doesn’t get a happy ending in the next book, I may riot. Please, let the man - and me - have some peace. PLEASE. Ps. It hurt, but I’ve enjoyed every single moment of this series.
After reading Lion of Zarall which was a 5 star read for me. I ran to read the arc of beast of Zarall and it did not disappoint. It was action packed till the end. The MMC, Beast, truely had me rooting for him every step of the way. All the things he has to endure just so he can have his freedom touches a persons heart.Beast of Zarall did not disappoint at all. Now i hope we don't have to wait to long for book nr 3.
*Please note, I was provided with an ARC version of this book by the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review*
So, when I read the first book in this series, 'Lion of Zarall', I had to stare at the cover for 20 minutes afterwards just to process the magnitude of emotions that it evoked. This follow up? I have NEVER felt so many things during the course of reading. The term "emotional rollercoaster" doesn't even BEGIN to cover it! It's beautiful, terrifying, heart-rending, funny, tear-inducing, edge-of-your-seat, breath-snatching, violent and so, so much more, often all at the same time.
Lion is now Beast, his purebred training broken and fully aware of himself and his own needs and desires for the first time. Once again, despite the book being written in the third person, it was so easy to slip back into Beast's mind and see the world through his eyes. The masterful writing makes experiencing his struggles to express himself and to balance his subservient position with his newfound independent thought completely gripping and incredibly relatable. While I can't say that he becomes more confident as the book progresses - his hesitancy and inner turmoil remains throughout - there is a visceral determination that builds in him that you cannot help but feel within your own heart. There is one moment in particular where this becomes particularly important, and the dark delight you feel when it shows through in Beast is just *evil grin*.
But it's precisely this connection with Beast that makes every stage of this book a complete emotional gut-punch. At one point, I actually screamed at my Kindle 'please, just give the poor guy a break!!!!'! It is the absolute sweetest kind of torture, lulling you into a false sense of security only for yet more turmoil to occur and send the reader spiralling into the depths of not trusting anything or anyone. The pacing of the story is absolutely spot on for this reason; at the start, these moments feel like falling over a cliff, but as you progress the tension builds even in the calm, because you're just waiting for the other shoe to drop and you have no idea when or how it's going to sneak up on you.
We also have a great cast of secondary characters, new and existing. I would recommend (re)reading Lion of Zarall first, as the reminder will help in terms of who certain people are and their relationships. I particularly love Olira's complexity as a character - I don't particularly like her as a person, but her own inner battles and the actions she takes make for a character who feels flawed and real, and has earned my grudging respect. Lodi, Valnar and Ink are likewise deeply flawed characters, each with their own inner demons and differing views of the path ahead of them. While my initial impressions of the characters don't feel inaccurate by the end of the book, equally their development and their actions give them depth and the reader a more rounded understanding of their motives, and it becomes far easier to sympathise with all of them.
Equally, the author's skill at making me loathe the "bad guys" in this book is incredible. They very quickly make your skin begin to crawl, your stomach begin to churn and your revulsion begin to build, and that's before they've even done anything of significance!
The worldbuilding is another element that really enhances your enjoyment of this series, and this book in particular. Not only do we get multiple POVs within the narrative to show the reader different attitudes and perspectives of the same events, but we get the view of outsiders, and learn more about the religion, practicalities and dark underbelly of the society at large. The reader can be horrified beyond measure by some elements, but even with stomach churning, you completely accept it because it's so obviously inkeeping with the world that the author has created. It's so easy to picture the locations and action because they are so well described, while leaving enough space for your imagination to enhance the experience (or censor it if you struggle with darker themes).
There is a LOT of darkness in this book, and I do highly recommend checking your trigger warnings before you head in. It's never overwhelming, but certain elements are quite graphic and the whole thing is certainly not for the faint-of-heart. As much as I'm low key in love with Beast and want to protect him from any more hurt (which makes an absolutely hilarious image in my mind), protecting yourself needs to come first.
I could go on, and on, and on about every nuance and moment that makes this book sing, but that would likely involve spoilers and I really, really don't want to do that. But it's safe to say that this is one of my top reads of the year so far, and I absolutely cannot wait to see everyone else's reaction when it's released!
Lion of Zarall was captivating and fun, and Beast of Zarall did not disappoint either. I enjoyed this read immensely. It’s dark and gritty. Beast’s journey is a well-thought-out and immersive read—an absolute rollercoaster. The cast of characters, including villains who are even darker than the formidable MC, excellent character development and evolving yet fragile bonds. After just 20% into the book, I gave up trying to predict what would happen next because every plot twist surprised me and took the story in a different direction. I was constantly invested in every chapter. I cannot wait to continue this series.
I’m sitting here a little bit speechless after reading this book. I’m trying to think where we’ve started in this book to where I'm at now and I don't think a few lines can cover it. This book, this series, packs such a punch. Literally and emotionally. From action sequences to building bonds between character's it's impressive how seamless and well these opposites are done.
Beast of Zarall is the second book in an already amazing series, and this one did not disappoint. In BoZ our world truly gets expanded, from worldbuilding to characters, the book just feels bigger and all the stakes at such a higher scale. Eddy doesn't just describe settings she places readers directly into them.
Picking up where we left off after the events of Brinescar we find our characters dealing with the aftermath of the uprising. It feels like a chess board with moves and countermoves, as we see multiple players arrive on the scene. We get our first look into Beast's mind after those fateful events and see how much he's changed, and in some ways remained the same. Talk about inner turmoil. Still in Olira's care, the book sets off with characters when taking those first few steps off the safe nook of Olira's farm. And boy do things get interesting from there. At this point I found it difficult to stop reading as I raced along. Though we move away from a strict roman-gladiator style arena it still doesn't lose that atmosphere or feel to it and we certainly don't miss out the fight scenes in this one.
We're introduced to a few new characters and in those few hundred pages I've come to know our newcomers that I feel like they’ve been here the whole series. That's how good Eddy is at connecting us to characters. And beyond the new, our reoccurring characters are given even more depth. I’ve fallen so deeply for our main character Beast, and the way BoZ gives us access into the mind of a tortured soul is sublime. We're seeing him fight against what he was raised to be, seeing him use what he was taught to break free of the chains holding him. His psyche is such an interesting anchor point in this book, the way the struggle is portrayed through conversations, actions and setting really shows how morally grey this man is. And packed into this book of course the emotional trauma to last me years.
Where I thought I was racing to finish the first book I found myself, thrown and hurtling into the vortex of this one, which sucked me in from the very first chapter. The pacing is expertise. It forced me to want to continue on. Because after each chapter I found myself wondering, what happens next?
And even after this book, with all the emotional trauma I've went through while reading, it's still one of my favorite series so far. And I'm looking forward to reading the final chapters in Beasts story. The man deserves some peace.
P.S And yes all my wishes have come true, Eddy has graced us with an amazing map in which we really see the world come to life.
Brutal, Brilliant, and Emotionally Wrecking 5⭐ Well. That was a lot. And I mean that in the best, most devastating way possible.
This chunky beast 😉 of a book (it could double as a doorstop and emotional wrecking ball) is a heavy-hitter in every sense—long, intense, and utterly consuming. If you’re looking for a light, breezy fantasy read, turn back now. If you’re ready to have your soul stomped on by masterfully crafted characters in a brutally broken world... Welcome to Chinderia.
One of the most impressive parts of this book is the depth. Rose is clearly flexing both her writing talents and her background as a psychologist, because the characters are nuanced, complex, and heartbreakingly human—even when they're doing monstrous things. Every decision feels weighted, every consequence deeply felt. And honestly, the emotional toll this book takes is well earned.
What sets this installment apart is the diversity in not just in the characters, but in the points of view. We don’t just see the heroes’ POV, we get insight into the villains, the morally black, the broken, and the completely human. Some of the new POVs made me want to scream, and some made me want to hug the book, but all of them made the world feel bigger, richer, and more horrifyingly real.
The world itself is still a dystopian nightmare of slavery, power imbalances, and civil unrest, but we get glimpses of the larger world beyond it—where things aren’t necessarily perfect, but at least slightly less terrifyingly brutal. I really hope that the greater world is explored in the next installments.
Now, let’s talk about him. If you read Book One and fell for the tortured leading man, brace yourself. Watching his arc here is like being emotionally waterboarded with beautifully written pain. He’s beaten, betrayed, and pushed so far beyond his limits. He thrives in violence, but the cost is written in blood and heartbreak.
Expect a raw, emotionally layered story with extensive trigger warnings provided at the beginning of the book (seriously…it’s three pages…) There’s violence, trauma, and some scenes that are deeply disturbing, but not overdone. It all serves the story. Go in with your eyes open - DO NOT skip those three pages.
Overall: Absolutely worth it, but emotionally exhausting. A gut-wrenching, vivid, brilliantly written book that left me feeling like I’d gone twelve rounds with my own feelings. 10/10 would suffer again.
Thank you to Eddy Rose for this beautifully written and gorgeous read. Beast holds a special place in my heart and I cannot wait for his story to continue.
Our MMC, Beast (formally known as Lion), is now able to understand and be aware of himself and what he needs, he's broken from the shackles of training and explores his own desires and wants after too long. Seeing the world through his eyes is heart-breaking, and I honestly just want to protect him. You get to empathise with what he's gone through and what he's still going through. He simply struggles through a lot despite gaining his newfound independence, and you're naturally rooting for him at every step of the way. I really need him to have a happy ending already, please!
You do need to read the first book in the series to understand the ongoing plot of this sequel. Otherwise, you might miss quite a few points. Now, let me sit in silence for a moment, please, because my emotions are all over the place. There's so much going on that there have been several moments where I pause, take it all in, and go back in. All the characters are very well written, and they have their own complex personalities in the end, which I find myself sympathizing with. The world building is fantastic and so immersive that I feel myself getting lost inside. The descriptions are beautifully thought out and detailed! I was on the edge of my seat throughout the plotline.
If you like betrayal and intense emotions, trauma, inner turmoil and extreme darkness, humour and moments of respite, a plot line that pulls you to the edge of your seat and a detailed world building with amazing characters - old and new, then this book is for you.
(A free short story is available after joining the author's newsletter called "A Taste of Blade and Roar."" Thank you so much. I got mine. I can't wait to read it!)
I keep reading this series and it keeps making me progressively more sad each time😅
Okay let’s get into it a bit more, I don’t really understand why Beast (Lion) changed his name, that was a bit confusing for me at first so it took me a second to get used to it. Also, everyone in this book, except Beast, SUCKS. Olira was starting to grow on me until she literally SOLD BEAST!!! I was pretty ticked off about that, even if she did try to make the right decision afterwards she still betrayed him. I didn’t like any of the newer characters that Beast was with, they were all horrible to him except Ink was somewhat better, but he still should’ve tried harder.
I also feel like a lot of things happened in this book without Beast actually getting anywhere, I understand that his story can’t be something that’s just wrapped up after 2 books but I felt like the plot dragged a bit to the point of being repetitive. It’s like the first 2 books have basically been this; Beast makes a smidge of headway trying to get his freedom, then things start to go wrong, then everything gets worse, and the end of the book leaves us with a cliffhanger where he’s in a terrible position that stresses me out😅
All of that being said, the author has genuinely made me care about this character, the problems he faces are so frustrating to me because I really want him to succeed. If the author hadn’t written such a great MMC I wouldn’t even care about everything he was having to constantly deal with.
Also, I generally enjoy multiple POVs but my problem with not liking the other characters made me not care about reading their chapters as much as Beasts, I rushed through some of them just to get back to his perspective.
Overall, I enjoyed this one more than the first and I’m so invested at the point I really need the 3rd one to come out soon😅
Also pleeeaasseee let Beast have a happy ending, genuinely don’t know if I can handle it if he doesn’t get to be happy at this point🙃
🩸Bl00d, Rage, Betrayal 🔗Owner x Slave Dynamic 💪🏻Found Power 💥Brutal World ❤️🩹PTSD Rep ⚔️Gladiators and Battle
This epic continues to sprawl in the best way and even though this is a "beastly" sized book, the pacing is excellent! Everything that happens is purposeful and propelling in service of the plot and deepens our protagonists motives and POV.
Beast is as magnetic as ever! Seeing and listening to how he's growing from book one is so rewarding. And we are treated to more complex insight into how his psyche has evolved.
We are met with a caravan of new characters too! And just like the supporting characters of book one, they each have unique personalities that enrich this world. There's a bit of mystery as we watch them along with Beast. Are their intentions well meant, are they a threat?
The fantasy elements are well played as just sprinkles within the world. It's not overly fantasy feeling, it feels like a gritty ancient Roman-type land for the most part. It feels grounded but the bits of fantasy we do get is highly intriguing to how it connects to Beast.
The focus on Beast and his emotional journey, paired with the very physical action set pieces, keeps this series propelling as ever in the same vain as Gladiator or Troy etc. I absolutely love it all and how raw and nuanced it is. It's not about spice...it's about plot, about nature vs nurture, Beast vs Human, good vs evil. I'm rooting for Beast with my fists in the air for him to win his freedom and maybe to find some love too. This man more than any deserves to be show what that is. But his journey is not an easy one, revenge and betrayal can darken ones soul.
The last act of this book is nailbiting and leaves you breathless...Strength and honor till book 3💪🏻
This wrecked me. This book is brutal. In tone, in content, in emotional impact and I mean that as both a compliment and a cry for help. What on earth did these characters do to you to make you hurt them this much, Eddy Rose?? If your idea of a good time is watching a deeply traumatized protagonist suffer and survive in a world that does everything it can to crush him, welcome home.
The world we walk into is grimdark, corrupted, and unforgiving, and the story doesn't flinch away from violence, manipulation, and the worst of humanity. Even the good characters are realistically terrible. It’s not a story for the faint of heart, and the content warnings aren’t just for show.
But through all that, Beast is magnetic. His voice is raw, his anger earned, and his emotional journey devastatingly well-written. There's an undercurrent of existential rage that seeps into you until you're ready for the whole world to burn.
And then there’s the rest of the cast. Or should I say, the emotional minefield of betrayal, suffering, and terrible decisions? Because wow. I hated almost everyone. In a "how dare you hurt my boy like this" way. The cruelty in this world is relentless, and yet it never feels gratuitous.
I haven’t stared blankly at a wall after finishing a book like this since The Poppy War. It gutted me, and yet I couldn’t look away. If you want your dark fantasy to challenge you emotionally and morally, this delivers. Just don’t expect to come out of it unscathed.
Thanks so much to the author for the complimentary review copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
4.5 ✨ I gotta round up cause Goodreads won’t do half stars
Omg. What did I just read! This book had me in a chokehold. What an incredible story of resilience. My heart breaks for beast but I also love him so much.
The Beast of Zarall is dark fantasy at its finest — think gladiator arenas, slave/owner dynamics, and a beast who’s more than just his chains. From the very first page, I was completely wrecked. The worldbuilding is brutal and immersive, the emotional stakes are high, and the writing? Absolutely stunning.
Eddy Rose delivers a heartbreaking, soul-deep story of power, survival, and the thin line between monster and man. The dynamic between the main characters is raw and intense, layered with pain, desire, and slowly building trust. And those arena battles? Bloody, epic, and cinematic.
📚 A must-read for fans of: • Gladiator-style fantasy • Slow-burn intensity • Immersive world building • Beautifully devastating storytelling
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Unputdownable and unforgettable. I need therapy (and a sequel).
Thank you for allowing me to read this ahead of release
First and foremost - read the warnings! This is not for the faint of heart. And your mental health matters to Eddy and me! This is the 2nd book of the Twilight of Blood series, and I am here for it! Such an amazing follow-up to Lion of Zarall. He no longer goes by Lion of Zarall. He knows that he is nothing but a Beast now. But when he can win in the arena, he takes it! But, how much more can Beast endure? Betrayal and tension are all through this story. I was locked and loaded and could not put this book down until I finished it. Hoping Beast will finally have some peace in his life in book 3. Please? I received an advance review copy at no cost and am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book was as epic and heartbreaking as the first. Eddy pulls no punches with the plot twists and the hard realities of having a favourite character you don't want to get hurt. Immedietly i felt betrayed by my current favourite character and i realised at that moment this book is going to finish me, then i realised no one is safe. Following beasts journey is a painful one that again leads to blubbering your eyes out heartbreak. I'm still holding out hope that one little moment in the cliffhanger can bring it all back but in the meantime I'm going to go stare at wall and try to cope with waiting for book 3
Beast of Zarall is book 2 of the Twilight of Blood series and dare I say it’s better than book 1. Oh my gosh I had the best time reading this! We have gladiator style fighting, political tension, slave/owner dynamics, finding one’s true self, a sprinkle of magic, multiple POV with new characters, OH and everyone is a different shade of morally grey. I had my jaw on the floor multiple times throughout the story. Once completed I sat in silence for a good 10 minutes because #1 I couldn’t believe what happened #2 i could t believe THATS where the story ended and #3 i wanted book 3 in my hands. Thoroughly enjoy Eddy Rose’s writing and ready for more!
What a stunning second installment! I don't even know what to say to avoid spoilers, so let me just say that no one is safe and I definitely got my heart ripped out a few times. The fights and trials are written beautifully and goodness gracious it was intense. As a bonus, there were some brilliant insults in the mix!
I got Gladiator and Game of Thrones vibes in the best possible way, and am ready for the next book already.
This helped me love the first book so much more! I Thoroughly enjoyed the suspense and action in this book and Lion is going to be one of my favorite characters for a while. I will admit it took me a while to get through this book even though I enjoyed it, it was just really long. Overall though, I definitely recommend!
Grab your tissues and get ready to have your emotions thrown into turmoil. I am healthily obsessed with this book and these characters. Eddy takes us on such an adventure with so much depth and growth. No page was dull, and I hung off every single word.
If you haven't read the first book in the series, Lion of Zarall I highly recommend you do, and then come back and read this one.
Well done Eddy, and when you're ready I need book three asap :)
