I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but accidentally becoming a mercenary for a demon might be the biggest one yet…
My inner dragon has always been more like a devil on my shoulder, talking me into making bad decisions and creating chaos. I have a hoard full of demon artifacts, each one likely to cost me my life if the owners ever come after me.
I thought accidentally becoming a mercenary was the worst mistake I would make in a single day… until I inadvertently mated myself to a demon. It’s not my fault his mating ring was so pretty!
It’ll be fine… all I have to do is fulfill my contract, not do anything else to make things worse, and avoid falling for the surprisingly sweet, himbo demon who thinks I’m his mate. Should be easy… right?

In their spare time, they…oh let’s be honest. They’re always writing. Follow along to stay connected to their shenanigans.
This was a really fun start to a new series and I'm really keen to get everyone else's stories now.
Drax and Mac were very cute together and I loved the reveal about the hoard. The bond was entertaining, although I do wish we'd gotten to know more about both Mac and Drax.
I really enjoyed the mission that they were on for Auri though, and the way the mercenaries all teamed together to help Mac with his goal. I liked the found family aspect and the different personalities and perspectives.
I'm assuming the next book will be Atlas (a magic immune gargoyle) and Rune (a mage) which I'm very interested in, but I also want to see what happens with Roman and his mage...
Meh. This was silly and spicy but too much. I rolled my eyes quite a few times. Mac was an idiot. He was so impulsive and reckless then would blame his poor decisions on his dragon. He read very young to me, which isn’t something I want in a spicy romance. It didn’t help that he was the younger brother from the first series, he just felt like a teenager. I didn’t care for his treatment of Drax for the first half. Drax was head over heels for him, and he knew it, then to have intimate moments and use his help, knowing you wanted to break the bond wasn’t cool. It got better in the second half but overall, this is a skip.
Strong cover. Can't say I felt much about Drax or Mac. Probably because his trauma is in the Drake security books which I have not read. Yet. The initial contract was interesting, as was the accidental mating, then it just was. Curious about Rune and Auri. The rest of it felt like an amateur scooby gang of found family. Where one goes the rest follows. Curious enough to read the Drake series and the next one.

3.5 rounded down. I was a little disappointed by this one. It started out strong but definitely lagged in the middle. And other than solo stuff earlyish in the book, nothing happens between them until almost 70% through the book. I definitely liked the Drake Security books more, but hopefully the next books turn out a bit better than this one.
Accidental Bond , the first book in the Damned Mercenaries by Mika Nix, is a sequel to the fated mates dragon shifter series, Drake Security.
I enjoyed that series very much, featuring the Drake family of dragons as they found their fated mates.
One of the main characters here is related to that family,
Mika Nix is the combined name of authors of MM romance, K.M. Neuhold and Mia Monroe, takes a different approach with this series than that of an established close knit family of ancient dragons.
Here it’s a boss mercenary demon who has obtained a group of mixed paranormal beings to work for him. They, by contracts obtained by “consent “ , ill conceived bargains, or some other means, now are basically “owned” by the demon, and are forced into his bidding. He calls them his Pets.
So yes, this immediately has elements that will not sit well with me. When I saw how this series was going, it was close to a DNF, but I did see it through. And there’s some nice things here.
Mac, the irresponsible Dragon has appeared in the Drake Security series, where he had to be rescued from some very dangerous situations due to his lack of control and overall behavior. Here, he’s finally getting some good development and growth.
Too late but he’s on a journey to find his mate. And in one of the better aspects of the story, we find out what and the history behind Mac’s dragon hoard.
Each of the “Pets” will have a story and find a mate. That’s clear.
But there’s just enough here that are elements in my auto DNF lists, that I’m stopping.
Glossing over being tricked into basically a forever servant clause. No. Sentient beings called pets. No. And while the authors have written demon Drax as some sort of cinnamon roll happy bunny, the other Pets/group members clearly have issues here with their roles.
So I’m noping right out. Others will find it interesting and charming. Check it out.

Drake Security Series (first series)
Damned Mercenaries -sequel series Accidental Bond #1
Here's Mika Nix's latest book "Accidental Bond." It's the first novel in their Damned Mercenaries series, which is a spin-off of their Drake Security series.

Oh, Mac. Poor, sweet, gets-himself-into-trouble-too-often Mac. You got yourself into something here alright. Good thing your new mate is here to help (and all of his friends/found-family).
This series has SOO much potential. Sooo many new characters and backstories and future HEAs. I canNOT wait for more. And the teaser we got for the next one? Yesss. Here for it. Here for sooner rather than later, hopefully.
I think the only thing missing (spoiler alert) was a family reunion at the end where Mac's brothers got to see him settled, mated, and happy.
Mac has gotten himself into a pickle. That's nothing new as Mac seems to find trouble wherever he and his sticky dragon fingers go. Not wanting to have to make the embarrassing call to his brothers to save his butt again, Mac decides to take matters into his own hands and by doing so, accidentally finds himself in a binding deal working for a demon in the Underworld. And that's not all. Somehow, his dragon decides this trouble isn't enough for them and Mac coincidentally also finds himself mated and bonded to another demon in his "Master's" employ.
Luckily for Mac, his predicament isn't as dire as it seems. His accidental mate, Drax, is the sweetest freaking demon ever. He wants nothing more than ensure Mac's happiness and is committed to making their mating work. Mac is obviously hesitant to go all in at first thinking this is just another one of his screw ups. Thankfully, as time goes on, and Mac gets to know Drax more, he realizes what a true gem he has in Drax as a mate.
It's a good thing Mac comes to the realization of how lovely his mate is because those two are not the only mercenaries "working" for the demon Auri. There is a small crew of men living in the compound and the group of them have formed a tight family bond. Someone breaking Drax's heart would not go over well. I adored the whole lot of them and look forward to Atlas and Rune's book next!
I really didn’t expect this book to have much substance or plot to it but it really ended up surprising me with how much I enjoyed it.
The beginning of this book is 100% ridiculous and does take a little bit to get into but what this book excels at is developing a great cast of characters and a really cool and unique world! I have read the Drake Security books before which helps to know a bit about the world but is definitely not necessary to have read in order to enjoy this series.
Mac is a mess and I spent the first 40% of the book just kind of annoyed at him for dragging Drax along, but by the end of the book I have to say he had become one of my favorites in the whole book. He was complicated and had some pretty low self esteem but the group of ragtag mercenaries that he finds himself with really band together to create a great found family storyline.
Drax is amazing and should be protected at all cost. I loved his character and how clueless about modern life was but how genuine and loyal he was to everyone around him. He and the other mercenaries are such a fun bunch of characters and I’m really excited for this series to continue. I want them all to get their HEAs, even Auri!
Tropes: Forced Proximity, Accidental Mating, Fated Mates, Demon / Dragon Pairing, Dual POV, Found Family Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 3/5 Relationship: MM
This was a sweet, silly book about a kleptomaniac dragon, Mac, who accidentally makes a deal with a demon, Auri, when he almost gets captured during a heist. He finds that the demon in question has a gang of mercenaries, including a vampire, a wolf shifter and a gargoyle… and a lesser demon, Drax.
Determined to escape the demon contract, Mac agrees to complete a mission - steal an amulet, give it to Auri, go home. Easy, right? That is until Mac accidentally completes a mating bond with Drax. Oops.
Drax is sweet and clueless about human shifters like Mac. He’s determined to make his new mate happy, even if Mac is unsure about what the heck is going on. I really enjoy the ‘monster who has no idea about human culture does their best to confusingly woo their new partner’. So good. Drax really tried his best and it was adorable. And Mac is just a chaotic idiot.
Loses a star because I felt Mac dithered too much over whether he wanted the bond - too late buddy, get with the program and just smooch the hot demon! Also the main plot was simply just a fetch-quest, but lets me honest, I wasn’t really here for the plot 😌
Read for: ✨ Adorable idiot x Chaotic idiot ✨ Dragon shifter x demon ✨ Always read your demonic contracts carefully ✨ Found family ✨ Spicyyyy ✨ Badly seducing your shifter mate ✨ Oops, we’re mates now lol
Holy Smokes what a good story! I knew Mac’s story was going to be fun and the authors didn’t disappoint! We first met Mac in the Drake Security series. Mac is a younger brother and gets in trouble a lot for his impulsivity. He is a little obsessed with hoarding demon relics and he has no clue why his dragon needs them.
Mac gets recruited by a mercenary and accidentally mates with a fellow mercenary, who is a demon. Mac is a little clueless but Drax is a total sweetheart and all in with this mating bond. When Mac has to complete a mission to fulfill his contract he finds he needs the help of his new found family of mercenaries.
Without giving it away I just have to say when I found out why Mac’s dragon hoards demon relics I about fell out of my chair laughing but also did an “awwww” completely out loud! These authors know how to tell a story and I will definitely recommend you read Accidental Bond. I hope we see more of the rest of the mercenaries.
Most dragons are impulsive to follow their dragons' horde intentions, and then you have Mack, who takes that to the next level. When on his latest heist of a dragon artifact, he unknowingly signs a life contract with Auri. Auri leads him to the Damned Mercenaries, a mixed group of supes with a bond stronger than most families. These people will do anything and everything to protect their own. Drax, also a demon, is part of this band of misfits and is immediately drawn to the dragon. Macks first mission leads him on a trail of a mage who is really a good guy just on the wrong side this round. Okay, at least I feel he's a good guy. Only time will tell. The team helps Mack accomplish his mission while showing what it is like to truly fit in for the first time in his life. it was nice to see each of these separate bonds grow, where none feel forced, just as it should all play out. Mack, being Mack, accidentally bonds to his mate Drax and doesn't trust this was supposed to happen. i really enjoyed this was a fated mates story, yet it took them time and reassurance to build the bond. not to mention accepting his new life as part of the Damned Mercanries. The bond of the team will have you keep coming back for more from this universe to see how the pairs play out.
okay so the premise hooked me immediately. And I just know this is the spin off of another series because I felt like there was some background information that wasn't given, just mentioned, that could have fleshed out Mac as a character a lot more. There was a lot of plot holes that left the character's motivations very flimsy on paper. the whole "for the plot" comment from one of the characters really summed this up - a lot of what happened didn't make sense, it was just forced for the plot. and it was a very shallow and flimsy plot because of it. the romance was insta-love and was very surface level, the characters were cute together but that's just it. never felt invested into either of them. not a horrible book, just ... meh p 2/5 e 3/5 a 2/5 c 3/5 h 2/5 12/5
The story felt like it lacked emotional backing. There wasn't enough focus on how Mac felt about being bound in a contract nor was there enough about Drax's feelings about Mac denying being his mate. They were only touched upon lightly but pushed aside in favor of moving the search for the amulet along, which was boring considering the dynamic between Mac and Drax barely evolved.
I didn't like how strongly the author kept pushing the idea that the Auri was supposedly benevolent when he was tricking people into becoming indentured servants with his contracts. "They want to stay here" is a problematic premise that wasn't properly treated making it seem like the others were thankful to be enslaved. There needed to be way more back story showing that Auri had actually saved them with his contracts instead of just having taken advantage of them in moments of weakness (aka Mac when he tricked him).
I had to DNF when Mac got captured by the mage and he suddenly finds himself wishing Drax was there. So much instalove. So very boring without any actual romantic tension.
TL;DR: There was potential here for a reverse sort of romance progression. One where Mac and Drax don't rrally fit the traditional mate dynamic because Mac didn't intend to be mated to Drax, but they slowly find themselves becoming more and more in love with each other as they spend time getting to know one another, but that doesn't happen here. We get Mac not really fighting against the unintentional mating, Drax not being super hurt over Mac's denials, then they just fall for each other without any true conversation because mating apparently just incites instalove.
First book in a new and exciting series! A unique spin on Fated Mates. Dual POV, Demon/Dragon pairing, Found Family.
When Mac's character first got introduced in the Drake Security series, I was beyond curious about him. Whenever he was mentioned in those books it was always with a fond exasperation.. mainly because of Mac's dragon's interest in shiny things often gets him into heaps of trouble. Getting his story was really interesting and I love the new world we're introduced to!
After Mac almost gets caught, (again) stealing a shiny artifact, he stumbled upon a demon who offers him a deal he can't refuse. He didn't really think through his deal until it sets in that he has to uphold his end of the deal, or else.... He did his best not to make things worse but his precious dragon was captivated by Drax's shiny ring... And what his dragon wants, his dragon gets...
I absolutely adore Mac and Mac's dragon, their relationship is hilarious to read and the tug-of-war relationship they have is endearing. While Mac tries to fight what it means when he stole Drax's ring, his dragon tries to get closer to the sweet demon. I liked the push and pull and how prominent Mac's dragon was throughout the story. I love when a shifter book actually showcases the shifter characters, and this book did just that!
Drax is absolutely precious, he doesn't understand pop culture references or most figures of speech, but he makes up for that by being authentically himself and doing what he can to please his mate. Even when he didn't understand why Mac was fighting their bond, he was still patient, kind, encouraging, and most of all, determined to show Mac they are meant to be together. He didn't expect to be mated to a dragon with sticky fingers but he can't imagine a better mate.
Now onto the 'main event', that being their hunt for the cursed amulet. I liked that the main plotline, while focused on building Mac and Drax's relationship, was also focused on providing a detailed play by play on their journey to find the cursed amulet Auri told them to find. I also enjoyed how big of a role the side characters have, each one played a part to the storyline and all of them together convey a found family dynamic that I absolutely adore! I'm so excited to read the next book to find out what's going on with Rune and how Atlas knew something was wrong!
Mac is a dragon who’s always making mistakes and causing chaos. And while running out of one bad situation, he finds himself in another one indebted and contracted to a demon. Then, if things can’t get worse, sticky fingers help him get mated to the sweetest, hottest, most devoted Demon who is also stuck in servitude.
Drax is just so excited to have a mate, and he is just the complete sunshine and sexiness thrown into Mac's new situation.
Now they’re off on adventures, trying to satisfy their boss, while Mac is just trying to think of a way that he can get out of this mess. And Drax is busy hoping and planning their future together.
These guys are just so cute...and hot. Drax is just such a himbo of a demon that I adored him. He is patient, kind, strong, eager, protective, and loyal. I loved seeing Mac finally start to find purpose, contentment, and a sense of belonging since he has always been kind of lost and involved in mischief.
And they’re surrounded by a whole group of interesting supes with different interests and skills. I liked their sense of camaraderie and the fact that they were all different types of beings. I am interested in their stories since this is the start of a new series. I am already excited about the couple that was teased.
What a great start to the new Damned Mercenaries series from Mika Nix! Accidental Bond starts off with Mack, a good hearted but slightly chaotic dragon shifter, who can't seem to stop from stealing demon artifacts and tends to get himself in a lot of trouble doing so.
This time, he really goes all out when he tries to get out of a bind by signing a contract with the demon Auri, not asking any questions first, and then being completely gobsmacked when he realizes that it's a lifetime contract with a group of demon mercenaries. Then enter even more crazy when he steals Drax's pretty mate ring (one of the demon mercs) and finds that he is now mated to Drax. Oops! But of course, this is a fated mates story, and they are perfect for each other. They both felt an instant attraction when they first met, but it still takes a little while for Mack to come around and accept it, considering they just met that day. I love how sweet and patient Drax is though, and how unwavering he is in his certainty that they are meant to be. His attempts to try and court the dragon were adorable and hilarious! 😍
This story is full of action, magic, sweet moments, spicy spice, great chemistry and banter, all while travelling all over the world to track down a particular artifact. This rag-tag group of mercs includes a wolf shifter, a gargoyle, and a vampire along with our demon and dragon, which makes it a lot of fun and super entertaining They are a family and have won me over! Can't wait to read the other stories coming up and see each of these guys find their mate ❤️
Accidental Bond is the first book in Mika Nix’s new Damned Mercenaries series and it is set in the same world as the authors’ Drake Security series. We met Mack in book four of that series, Inferno, as the younger brother of the main group of dragons. Mack had gotten himself in trouble by stealing from the wrong demon and his older brothers had to bail him out (thus leading to Valentino and Montrose’s love story along the way). I enjoyed the way that story introduces a younger brother outside of the main clutch, so it was fun to then get Mack’s book here, which is set a couple of years later. This one definitely works as a standalone, and the older Drake brothers are mentioned, but don’t appear here. But fans of the Drake Security series should enjoy the similar tone to this story and the chance to reconnect with that world.
Overall, I found this a really fun start to a new series. I am enjoying being back in this world and love the way the authors connected the series, but are still taking things in some new directions. I enjoyed meeting the other guys in Auri’s gang of mercenaries and each was intriguing in their own way. I am looking forward to following along as the series continues.
This was a delight to read. It was a surprisingly light and sweet love story between a demon and a dragon who just can’t help stealing demon treasure for his hoard.
Years have passed since we first met Mac when he barged back into his brothers’ lives after getting himself into trouble stealing from demons. One might think he learned his lesson when he came so close to dying last time, however that is NOT the case and Mac is still stealing from demons at the pushing from his dragon. This leads him to being chased and taking a deal of protection with a mysterious person without asking a single clarifying question. *cue face palm* Mac now finds himself transported to the underworld to be a minion of a demon until such time as he completes a task for him. He finds himself hanging out with the rest of minions and has a surprisingly easy time settling in and making new friends.
The different twist on fated mates and how Mac and Drax work through the difficult first days of their relationship was really amusing and kept me entertained. The building of a friendship and romantic relationship was nicely done and I like how Mac still managed to keep true to his charmingly chaotic self. This was a good start to a new series and I anticipate enjoying the rest of the series as much as I did this one.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
“You manage to get yourself in a lot of trouble, don’t you, dragon?”
Wait just a darn minute, is this a book about Mac, one of the younger Drake brothers that we met in Inferno, book 4, in the Drake Security series? Why did I not know this until I started reading? I feel like a goober, I guess I don't pay close enough attention. We'll just keep that a secret between us if you don't mind. I never read the book blurbs on these two authors books because I know I'm going to read them regardless of what they're about.
This is book one in a new series, Damned Mercenaries by the writing duo of Mika Nix (Mia Monroe & K.M. Neuhold). As mentioned above, as I stumbled around like an idiot, this is a spin-off of the series Drake Security (or as I like to refer to it the Drake brothers).
Mac obviously did not learn anything after stealing from Montrose/Xazedose. He's still as impulsive as ever and can't seem to get enough demon items for his horde. Leap first, ask questions later is Mac's unofficial motto. He never saw Drax coming.
I'm loving this new series and I can't wait for Atlas and Rune's book, it's just got to be up next in the series. Can't wait!!!
I admit I kind of found it hilarious that Mac ends up accidentally mated to a demon because he reminds me of a little chaos demon himself. He's sweet as can be and a great guy but his impulsivity does add an element of chaos to his life. Especially when it tends towards getting him in some predicaments lol. Drax, however, is the perfect predicament for him because he is a total sweetheart. Mac was understandably reticent initially (thinking this was just another example of him making a bit of a mess) but I loved that Drax was so incredibly good to him and showed him that he did deserve the love and care and companionship a mating can have. Seeing them work things out and actually get to their HEA was amazing. I will say, I think the pacing of the relationship was a little off (it felt like it was slow then fast then slow then fast to me) but it didn't cause a major issue and I still really enjoyed it. Some of it may be it's the first book in a new series so things are kind of warming up in that sense. I'm intrigued by the other people who have taken the same pact/deal/bargain - I'm looking forward to seeing them get their HEAs too.
Dragons, demons, and dark deals collide in a tantalizing blend of action, romance, and the supernatural. Definitely remember Mack from the Drake Security series – he was the little brother that was always getting into trouble…🤦🏻♀️ I found Drax to be the sweetest demon I’ve ever come across…🥰
The accidental bond between Mack and Drax adds excitement to the story, sparking a romance that grows from an unexpected connection into something both tender and passionate. Drax’s sweetness is a perfect foil to Mack's more guarded nature, and their chemistry is warm and natural, with plenty of moments of humor and heart.
I really enjoyed the adventures they experienced while Mack had to acquire the demon artifact for Auri, the demon Mack made a deal with.
The discovery of the truth behind Mack’s hoard was very exciting for me, I loved that little twist.
This book is a great pick for anyone seeking a feel-good, steamy romance with a touch of magic. The accidental bonding premise is done in a fresh way, and the characters' growth as they navigate their connection makes for a satisfying and sweet read. It’s a perfect mix of fun, warmth, and paranormal allure.
Having met mischief making dragon Mack in the Drake Security series it was really fun watching him make yet another impulsive decision but this time there’s more at stake than just himself. The very sweet, kind and patient demon Drax is also along for the ride. And what a ride it is! It’s not just the the accidental mating (impulsive Mack strikes again) between these two wonderful beings there’s also zapping across the globe, and between realms, with a merry band of mercenaries trying to get a very dangerous artefact. An artefact which is needed to satisfy the contract Mack inadvertently made with a high ranking demon. Mack and Drax overcome the challenges of their accidental bonding which forges into a true bond once they truly get to know each other. Of course there’s plenty of steam balanced with sweet, minimal angst and a HEA which left me warm and mushy with a goofy smile on my face. We get a peek at who is up next and I can’t wait to see the cast of very interesting side characters get their stories told.
First in series (Damned Mercenaries). Paranormal. Fated mates. Found family. Dual POV.
This is a spin-off from the Drake Security series, with a troublemaker dragon that keeps getting caught up in problems, stealing and almost getting caught, then making a deal with a demon without reading the contract, and oh yeah, grabbing a mating ring and bonding to an unusually sweet fellow mercenary demon.
Sure Mack doesn’t want to be mated to Drax, but he’s never mean about it, and Drax is so lovely in his happiness and desire to be the best mate for Mack. Luckily they are fated, and the bond between them allows for the attraction and feelings to grow but not feel forced which I really enjoyed. This story happens at a fast pace, but it does allow for moments for Drax and Mack to appreciate each other and learn how their bond really brings them each a sense of joy and completeness. There is plenty of adventure in this story, a found family loyal to the last breath, and some steamy interactions between Drax and Mack. A great start to a new series. 4.5 rounded up
Oh Lord, was I excited to meet this little chaos dragon with his penchant for demon artefacts. We met Mack in a different series called "Drake Security" by Mika Nix. He got into trouble and his big brothers needed to bail him out. The dragon with sticky fingers tends to get in trouble a looooot. Demon artefacts-why Mack's love for demon artifacts? Well, maybe fate has her fingers in it... Drax, the wonderful, patient, gentle demon meets Mack after he gotten himself in a pickle - once again. Drax and the ragtag team of supernaturals help Mack and develop a wonderful friendship along the way. I love the dynamics of this story of course, the spice level is off the charts -as always when there as dragons involved- Besides the romance and the spice the genuine friendship between those seemingly different characters was lovely to read. I can't wait to read more about those wonderful characters. As of now I am most excited for Atlas' story. *** I was given this book for review purposes and this is as usual my honest opinion ***
Awww baby brother - always getting himself into mischief, drifting about and missing a tether to ‘home’.
I love the idea of a dragon being compelled to hoard particular items, unbeknownst to them. And Mack’s might be the sweetest of them all.
Mack has a penchant for getting into awkward situations, but accidentally becoming a mercenary for a Demon may be the stupidest and best decision ever.
Drax is the sweetest, kindest Demon to ever be. And he’s absolutely adorable as he tries to figure out Mack. But he also sets the bar for mates. Steady, strong, and ready to do anything for his mate.
Now that Mack has found a place he belongs and his person, who truly sees him and loves him, we get a cast of friends who are sure to delight in their own stories.
