As the middle child of the Shanahan family, Zaira does her best to keep the peace. She doesn't share her dream of becoming a published author with her family to spare herself their disapproval. When she's caught in a scandal involving the local matchmaker, Bellamy McKenna, she must put her storytelling ability to good use and feign a match with him to avoid wagging tongues and her parents' anger.
Feeling the growing pressure to marry as a well-known, yet single matchmaker to St. Louis's Irish community, Bellamy reluctantly agrees to a temporary match with Zaira. But even though the matchmakers in his family might be able to find love for others, they have a history of disastrous relationships for themselves. When secrets and danger force Zaira and Bellamy to work together, is it finally the matchmaker's turn to be lucky in love?
Jody Hedlund is the best-selling author of over fifty books and is the winner of numerous awards. She writes sweet historical romances with plenty of sizzle. Find out more at jodyhedlund.com.
Jody lives in central Michigan with her husband, five busy children, and five spoiled cats. When she’s not penning another of her page-turning stories, she loves to spend her time reading, especially when it also involves consuming coffee and chocolate.
Okay wow. This book was so good. I could not put it down. The chemistry was off the charts and the kisses were even better. These two had sparks every time they were on the page.
Zaira is an undercover author who needs some real-life romantic experience so she can write better. Bellamy is dealing with a lot of pressure on his latest matchmaking job, and if he messes it up, it could hurt the whole family business.
They run into each other and make a small deal. Bellamy gives her a hug or a kiss to inspire her writing, and she helps him figure out his toughest client. It should have been simple. But then they get caught together. The rumors start right away. To keep things from blowing up and to protect both their reputations, they agree to say they are courting each other. And just like that, the fake relationship... and then engagement starts!
They’ve known each other for years, but this is the closest they’ve ever been. Bellamy keeps his guard up because he has always liked her, but he believes love is not meant for him. While Bellamy constantly objects to them getting too close Zaira has always felt drawn to him... making their arrangement fun for her but also confusing and risky.
Their “practice” moments slowly turn into real feelings, which were never part of the plan. A fake courtship sounded easy, but pretending gets harder when everything between them starts to feel real. Bellamy thinks his family is cursed in love, so he tries to push her away. Zaira tries to hold back too, knowing if she reveals she truly has feelings for him he will push her away.... but all she wants is to be near him.
Can the matchmaker accept that his perfect match may be Zaira...Can Zaira's happily ever after finally be found outside the pages of her stories and be with Bellamy?!
The tension in this book was everything. So many “I hate that I love you” moments, and I ate them up. Every time they let their walls drop, I was obsessed. Now I need to go back and read the earlier books.
This was a full six-star read for me.
I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.
I’ve so enjoyed Jody Hedlund’s A Shanahan Match series, and while I’m sad to see it come to an end, Marrying the Matchmaker is a perfectly romantic, exciting conclusion. I’ve been looking forward to Bellamy’s story since book one, and Zaira was such an interesting character, too. This book is unique and captivating, and I can’t wait for more from Hedlund! 4.5/5 stars
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I’ve loved this series from the beginning, and this final installment was a truly delightful and satisfying way to wrap everything up. Bellamy has been a favorite character of mine throughout the series, so seeing him finally get his love match felt especially rewarding.
The romance between Bellamy and Zaire is passionate and heated while keeping the door closed. Their chemistry is tangible and the tension between them was perfect. I adored these two!
I also really enjoyed the historical setting in St. Louis, which added to the dynamics. There are two orphaned children in the story who brought a lot of heart and emotion, and the inclusion of Irish customs was interesting and gave the book an extra layer of depth and charm.
One of my favorite aspects was how both main characters have interests their families wouldn’t approve of—interests they feel forced to keep secret. Watching them support and encourage each other in those pursuits made their relationship feel even sweeter.
Overall, this was a lovely, heartfelt, and deeply satisfying romance, and a wonderful conclusion to a series I’ve truly enjoyed. I’m sad to see it end.
I received a complementary copy but a positive review was not required.
After a couple of great matches in the Shanahan Family, Bellamy knew he was close to becoming the official Matchmaker of the county. His father was ready to hand over the official records. But his father had one more request.
Zaira loved to write but had to keep it secret from her parents. Her friend, Bellamy, knew she wrote for the newspaper under the guise of being a man. Bellamy hid his artistic talent from his father. They also hid their feelings for each other.
A sweet final story of the Shanahan Match Series. I have really enjoyed the books. Each book was very entertaining. I loved the characters and I sure love Jody Hedlund's books.
I received an advance reader copy of this book. The thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was so excited for Bellamy to get his own story!! Who doesn’t love a fake relationship trope? Bellamy and Zaira find themselves in a pickle and are forced in to a fake match. Zaira craves adventures, will Bellamy be able to keep her safe? Will they hold on to their own secrets or will those secrets tear them apart?
Jody’s characters are so endearing! The attraction and tension between Bellamy and Zaira can almost be felt through the pages. I love how Bellamy cares for Zaira and has always had such a connection with her. Their love story does not disappoint! I need more books about them!
Marrying the Matchmaker is a captivating conclusion to the wonderful A Shanahan Match series. The series offers an entertaining snapshot of Irish American community life in 19th century St. Louis unfolding through the lives and loves of the Shanahan and McKenna families. This story centers around the relationship between middle daughter Zaira Shanahan and matchmaker Bellamy McKenna. Their contrasting personalities (imaginative versus logical) clash in delightful ways, and both beautifully crafted characters are conflicted between family expectations and personal dreams. Tender moments mixed with humorous ones, wrapped in romantic tension, keep the well-paced story engaging and fresh. I totally enjoyed this story and the series and highly recommend them. I read an early copy of this book from the publisher through Interviews and Reviews via NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Pardon me for a moment as I collect my thoughts (and keep fanning myself) about this deliciously swoony KissingBook! Emphasis on kissing because wowza!! Jody Hedlund writes some absolutely sizzling smooches, and several of them can be found in her latest historical romance, Marrying the Matchmaker. I have been WAITING for this story from the moment I met Bellamy McKenna in book one of this fantastic series. I knew the matchmaker needed a happily-ever-after too, and I knew Hedlund would deliver the perfect one for him. But, goodness y’all, this book exceeded even those already-high expectations.
Let’s first establish that Bellamy is a genuinely good guy even if he plays a bit loose with the ‘rules’ when he’s finding a match for someone. On the outside, he seems a little cheeky… maybe a little roguish (in the delightfully mischievous way, not wicked)… and a lot swoony. Especially when he turns on the charm. And, be still my heart, he turns on the charm in mega watts during his ‘fake betrothal’ to Zaira. (I put ‘fake betrothal’ in air quotes because who are they kidding? We all can see they have feelings for each other, no matter how much they try and deny it.) I’m honestly not sure how Zaira remained standing when Bellamy was in close proximity. I’m pretty sure my knees would have melted into putty the moment his pinky finger brushed intentionally against mine like he does with her… though, now that I think about it, she was seated for that and maybe I need to go back and re-read all his swooniest scenes to see how often Zaira was already sitting down, which would explain her relative composure. It would not be a sacrifice to do a re-read, let me assure you. (Blissful sigh.) Ahem. Where was I? Oh yes. Bellamy. A good guy. And Hedlund gives us such great layers to explore in his character, a depth and a guardedness to him that we may have only noticed hints of previously. Not to mention the insights we gain into Oscar’s story as well – oh how I loved his wisdom to Bellamy when it matters most.
(But also, did I mention how swoony Bellamy is?!?)
Hmm… Maybe I need to talk about Zaira for a bit to rein in my incoherent babbling about Bellamy. Zaira is a bit of a free spirit, imaginative, stubborn, and definitely more rebellious than her parents realize (she’s really good at hiding her secrets). True to form for a middle child though, she never wants to rock the boat. But in Marrying the Matchmaker, she’s about to skip right to capsizing it. Because despite disguising her newly-launched writing career with a pen name to avoid a scandal and keep her parents in the dark, she finds herself in the middle of a scandal anyway, thanks to a sizzler of a very public kiss (for ‘research’ purposes, of course). I’ve loved Zaira all along and I still love her, but I also appreciated getting to really know her on these pages and explore the layers that make her so special. In the process of showing us Zaira’s depth, Hedlund also expands our knowledge of the cholera epidemic in St. Louis and its effects on the economy, the population, and the children. This is not something I ever studied in school, so I’ve found it a fascinating plot arc to follow across the whole series and especially the ramifications we glimpse in this final book.
Bottom Line: Make sure you have no less than two fans aimed at you while reading Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund – and maybe just go ahead and climb into the closest freezer to be safe – because the kisses between Bellamy and Zaira are on fire! Passion and longing and sparks in droves, y’all. Once again, this author proves that closed door romance can still be breath-stealing and knee-weakening and fan-requiring. As Bellamy finds his heart and Zaira finds her voice, Hedlund also treats us to compelling history that was new to me and grace-filled wisdom on what makes a great marriage. This balance of playful (and smokin’ hot) chemistry with emotional & spiritual depth makes this particular happily-ever-after WELL worth the wait.

Do you like stories that feature a matchmaker? Do you wish that matchmakers were more of a thing in modern day society?
Zaira is the middle child in the Shanahan family, and she dreams of becoming a published author. She keeps this dream from her family, but when she involves herself in a scandal by asking local matchmaker Bellamy McKenna to kiss her so she will know how to write about it, her life is about to change. Zaira and Bellamy are forced into an engagement to cover up the scandal. Will these two fall in love? Will they be able to help those in need in their community?
My thoughts on this novel: • I enjoyed this novel’s setting in St. Louis, Missouri in 1849.
• There is a spark and great chemistry between the two leads, Zaira and Bellamy.
• This historical romance has the fake relationship and friends to lovers’ tropes. There was great tension with the fake romance, but with each kiss, real feelings would form.
• The story was told through Zaira and Bellamy’s point of views in alternating chapters. I loved how these two characters could be themselves with each other.
• This novel is the conclusion to the “A Shanahan Match” series. I wish this series could continue.
• I loved the look into the Irish community in St. Lous and Irish matchmaking. My Great-Great Grandparents came from Ireland. At this point in time, the Irish are immigrating to S. Louis because the potato famine and are living in terrible conditions. Zaira and Bellamy help a pair of orphans.
• The McKennnas as a matchmaking family are good at making matches for others, but not for themselves which has made Bellamy hesitant to match with Zaira.
• Cholera is spreading through St. Louis, which is scary at the time, especially as they didn’t know what caused it. They thought it might be in the malt used to make beer or in the air as a miasma. Unfortunately, they didn’t realize it was contaminated drinking water.
• There was some action and tension towards the end of the book where the two main characters find themselves inadvertently mixed up in a bank robbery.
• This book was a clean and inspiring read. It focused on a theme of telling the truth.
Favorite Quote: “Was it because she cared more about what people thought of her and pleasing them than doing what was right and pleasing to God?” - This was an interesting and very thoughtful quote.
Overall, Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund was a quick read and a very romantic historical romance. I enjoyed this book, and it was a great read for the Valentine’s season.

You have proved yourself to be a very efficient and understanding matchmaker. Watching you navigate your previous matches, and the trickiness behind those, everyone has applauded you. Even Oscar, even though you might not quite see it. Those couples are thriving and very much in love.
Speaking of love, I think it's time that you stop trying to tell yourself that there are no feelings being harbored by you for Zaira Shanahan. Every interaction between you two has been noticed by us readers, and those around you. You might be out of your depth with that one. Actually, you are. Completely out of your depth with her. Boy, you are smitten. Wholly and irrevocably. Stop trying to deny it. It is seen by everyone but yourself and Zaira. Shakespeare had it right when he penned the words, "The lady doth protest to much, methinks". Yes, that applies to you, and Zaira. You both are way in over your heads. When are you going to recognize that and move forward to being happy together and building a beautiful and messy life together? And stop the protest that is on your lips right now. There is too much evidence to support my claims.
You trying to avoid her when she enters a room. The increased eye contact. Your continual watching where she is at in proximity to you. Your protectiveness of her, yet brushing it off as brusque and telling her she needs to be more careful. Your hands flexing. Knowing her secret. Her knowing yours. From the first moment we saw you interact, we all knew. I'd dare say that your cheeks might turn a touch red and your hand might be flexing a touch.
Again, trust us. We know. We see all of the signs whether you do or not. When you finally allow yourself to trust her completely with your heart, she will do all she can to protect it. Just the same as you when you finally realize that you already own her heart. And in those moments of peril and danger, you two are a great team and care deeply for the safety of each other.
It's time. Enjoy your journey throughout this book as you woo and allow yourself to fall even more completely in love with Zaira, the other half of your heart.
Sincerely, All Readers Invested In You & Zaira
Content: Clean. Some kisses but nothing further. Some mild moments of peril but nothing graphic.
I received a physical copy from the author/publisher, Bethany House, as well as a digital copy via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
The matchmaker worked hard, but these stubborn hearts worked harder.
I just binged the Matchmaker series by Jody Hedlund and 1849 St. Louis has never been so swoony or chaotic. If you love a meddling matchmaker and high-stakes historical drama, add these to your TBR:
✨Calling on the Matchmaker: Stubborn hearts + a cholera outbreak. Watching Finola realize she deserves love? Wrecked me. ✨Saved by the Matchmaker: Pure redemption and guarded hearts softening. ✨A Wager with the Matchmaker: Alannah & Kiernan. The tension! The longing! The "matchmaker knows best" energy. ✨Marrying the Matchmaker: Fake courtship + a secret writer heroine. Watching the man who fixes everyone else’s love life finally fall? OBSESSED.
Why you’ll love it: 🍀 Strong Irish family dynamics 🔥 Sizzling chemistry & faith-filled romance 🤫 Secret identities & "only one bed" vibes
I’m officially ready to join a Shanahan family dinner. 🍽️
✨️Thank you, Bibliolifestyle, Bethany House Publishing, and Jody Hedlund, for sharing these books with me!
Jody really sets the stage in 1849 St. Louis. They are rebuilding after the fire, the cholera epidemic is slowly declining, and the number of orphans on the streets is vast. This book starts about a month give or take, after book 3.
Bellamy is a young Irish immigrant matchmaker, preparing to take over his family business.
Ohhh, Bellamy! This young matchmaker has been devious, cunning, and a total trickster when it comes to setting up his matches. And he’s been wildly successful… except when it comes to himself—not that he’s planning on being matched.
We also get a real glimpse of who Zara is in book 3. She’s secretly writing a story, and she also knows Bellamy’s secret! I was eagerly awaiting this book!!
The chemistry between these two was insane. Even though they deny their attraction—not only to each other, but to themselves—they’re basically gluttons for punishment because they just can’t stay away. They’re so similar, yet they constantly challenge each other while also offering support… even when they can’t stand one another. I was thoroughly invested and couldn’t put it down. Such a lovely conclusion to the Shanahan Matchmaker series!
the Matchmaker is the fourth book in the Shanahan Match series and let me tell you this book is a wonderful installment to this series. This one happenes to focus on Bellamy who has been doing most of the relationship magic since book 1 and he has definitely been a character I have always taken a liking to so seeing him having a larger role in this book was a pleasure. If you are someone who enjoys the trope of fake dating this is the story for you.
We are introduced to the other Shanahan daughter Zaira. Zaria longs to be a published author but her parents disapprove seeing as it could bring dishonor. She has no interest in being forced into marriage but longs for the happy relationships her sisters have. When she and Bellamy are caught in a misunderstanding by her parents they agree to a fake plan.
However, as time goes by they truly realize that they care for each other. Unfortunately they are unsure how to take the next step to make things appear real. Will they find the courage to admit their true feelings.
Marrying the Matchmaker (A Shanahan Match Book #4) by Jody Hedlund Published by Bethany House
Ohhh, that first kiss… WOW. 😍🔥 The chemistry between Zaira and Bellamy absolutely leapt off the page.
Zaira, the middle Shanahan sibling, is a peacemaker with a secret dream of becoming a published author—one she keeps hidden to avoid criticism. When a scandal forces her into a pretend match with the very matchmaker who caused it, her storytelling skills suddenly become essential.
Bellamy McKenna is a respected Irish matchmaker in 1800s St. Louis… and yet still single himself. Reluctantly agreeing to a temporary courtship, neither expects the sparks, secrets, or danger that follow—or that this match might finally be the one.
💚 I adored these two. They were likable, engaging, and truly wonderful together. 🍀 I’ve loved this entire series, especially since it’s set in my home state, and I really enjoyed learning more about the Irish immigrant experience—especially meaningful since my own ancestors are from Ireland. ✨ This is a clean, faith-friendly historical romance I highly recommend.
I’ve received a complimentary copy and was under no obligation to leave a positive review.
Why is this necessary? “At the quick rise of her chest, Bellamy's attention dropped to her bust. The style of her summer gown was cut low, leaving the swell of her chest showing above the lacy edge of her bodice. His gaze seemed to reach out and caress her skin, and she drew in another breath, this one more pronounced than the last. Was this what desire truly felt like?” Pg 11
Ahhh another masterpiece from Jody Hedlund! I couldn’t get enough of this wonderful historical romance.
This story captivated me from the very start and I couldn’t wait to find out all that it had in store for me! If you read some of the past books in the series you will know Bellamy, he is an Irish matchmaker, but he is also hiding a secret. Zaira is the middle child of a wealthy family and does her best to keep the peace, so as a published author, she writes under a pen name to avoid disapproval from her family. She needs to do some research for one of her stories that brings forth a scandal involving Bellamy. These two were so highly attracted to each other, but are hiding their true feelings and also don’t realize how strongly they feel for one another. The romantic tension was high and done so well! Jody Hedlund is so good at the chemistry, the sizzling kisses that can scorch the pages, while still keeping the door closed and comfortable for me as a reader. They had this love, hate thing going between them, so I loved how the Dual POV was done too so we knew how they both were starting to feel while they tried to resist each other. One of my favorite scenes was the bank scene when both Bellamy and Zaira’s walls start to come down. It was really something special. This book is not an easy one to put down. It had romance, danger, adventure and reminded me of everything I love about Jody Hedlund's books!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
You know how you get to know a whole cast of characters throughout a book series? And then you read the final book, and you see a quick glimpse of each MC, and then… it’s all over. And you say goodbye? (until you re-read, of course!) it’s that bittersweet feeling. They all got their happily ever after, and you’re left, alone, trying to figure out what to read next, if you can read anything, and if you’ll connect with the characters.
That’s how it feels, leaving the Shanahan siblings.
I’ve enjoyed walking through the trials, the adventures, the heartbreak, and the healing with the Shanahans.
Zaira and Bellamy finish off the series. The matchmaker finally finding his own match.
I loved the theme of honesty throughout this story. So often in fiction, with fake dating especially, we do often see lying, and the characters don’t always come clean, or admit they the lying was wrong. But both Zaira and Bellamy see the problem with hidden hobbies/activities and both desire to be honest and truthful — not only with each other, but with their families.
As usual the book contains swoony kisses, adventure, and a little intrigue. Faith, honesty, respect, and purity is also woven through the book.
Thank you, Jody, for another great series, and my ARC copy!
Oh man, I LOVED the banter in this book!!!!! It was Sooooo well done. I am always a fan of enemies to more, and this one was the perfect journey. Our matchmaker, Bellamy, has been very successful in his journey of making matches so far, but believes that love is not in the cards for himself. He has met his match in the spunky and outspoken Zaira, who tests his willpower every time she comes around 😂 These two are a hoot, but it’s the chemistry both between the banter and their deeper connection that really makes you root for them. They are clearly meant to be, and they are a perfect match. So I was definitely invested haha
A must read, and a great book 4 in this series!! I highly recommend it if you haven’t read it yet!!
Thanks to the author publisher and Netgalley for an advance copy. All opinions are my own!
Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund is a historical fiction novel that is a delight from start to finish.
Zaira Shanahan has a bit of a rebellious spirit that seems to get her into trouble frequently. Here, she ends up in a compromising position with the local (and widely desired by the ladies) matchmaker, Bellamy McKenna. And that was after they had kissed in public.
The two had agreed to help each other with their secrets. She needed Bellamy to kiss her so she would know how to show the proper emotion in her romance stories that she was writing for the local paper, and in return, she would help him with a difficult match he was trying to make. He was too captivated by Zaira to fulfill his promise to kiss her, so she made him do it openly, which prompted their father and her brother to set up a match.
They only agreed because they decided it would be a fake match, and they would end it after a certain point. But then...stuff happens, and it is so good, you will not be able to put this book down.
If you love hate-to-romance and forced marriage tropes, you will adore Marrying the Matchmaker. I highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Bethany House Publishers via NetGalley for my honest opinion.
I've been waiting for this book since the series started and I'm so glad the author blessed us with the matchmaker's story. I loved that Jody Hedlund let us have a peek into his history and maybe matchmaking in the makes as well for our intrepid Matchmaker. I really enjoyed the whole series and loved how this one wrapped up. Full of banter and a historical background, you'll enjoy this series! 4.5⭐
*thank you to Bethany House for a complimentary copy of this book to read. All thoughts are always my own.
Set in the 1800s, Marrying the Matchmaker is the fourth and final installment of the Shanahan Match historical romance series.
Marrying the Matchmaker is the fourth and final installment of the Shanahan Match historical romance series. Zaira has a secret dream of becoming a romance author; however, she is inexperienced in love and needs some inspiration to write more authentic stories. She strikes a deal with the local matchmaker to help him with a difficult match if he will kiss her. When they are caught together, they are forced to forge a fake courtship to protect both their reputations. Things get complicated as they each develop real feelings for the other.
What happens when the matchmaker meets his match?
In each installment of this fun series, you can depend on sizzling chemistry and sweet romance (closed door). I love the memorable and likable characters and swoon-worthy romance in each installment.
Fans of page-turning action, entertaining banter, complicated situations, and chaste romance will enjoy the Shanahan Match series. The business of matchmaking drives the action and intrigue in each story. A poignant theme in Marrying the Matchmaker includes the plight of orphans and the efforts of Zaira and the Matchmaker to care for them. I also appreciated how Zaira and the Matchmaker supported and promoted each other’s dreams. In addition, their commitment to honesty is inspiring.
While the installments can be read as standalones and in any order, a series, in my opinion, is always best read in publication order.
The fun in this story happens when the traditional practice ot matchmaking meets a modern fake relationship trope. Secrets, intrigue, sizzling kisses, romantic tension, and witty banter keep you turning the pages.
The practice of matchmaking is an interesting premise for the series. Marrying for love was a radical idea! What happens when the matchmaker meets his match?
Each installment in this series offers its own themes, but the customs and struggles of the Irish immigrant community are woven throughout. This adds a rich layer of storytelling, and you will enjoy the vivid details and strong sense of place.
If you are looking for a compelling, entertaining, and well-written historical romance series, you will appreciate this one! Likeable characters, sweet romance, family drama, customs and struggles of Irish immigrants, and page-turning action are a few reasons why this multi-layered series is TBR worthy!

“You’re a part of my heart and soul and body... i’ll never, never, be able to get you out of my mind.”
I love this series so much! The St. Louis setting isn't one I've read about but I've loved watching the Shanahan family navigate everything going on.
While this isn't my favorite of the series, seeing Zaira and Bellamy get their HEA was so fun! They're truly a perfect match, both snarky and hiding secrets from their family. Jody write such great chemistry! The tension between these two while they fought their feelings for each other was so good.
Overall, I think this is a great read for fans of the historical romance genre.
Thank you to Baker for my copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own
Another delightful historical romance from Jody Hedlund! Marrying the Matchmaker is the fourth—and sadly final—installment in the A Shanahan Match series, which follows the Shanahan siblings during the cholera epidemic in 1800s St. Louis. In this book, we finally get to see Zaira Shanahan and Bellamy McKenna—the famous local matchmaker—realize just how deeply in love they truly are.
Zaira is an expert at keeping the peace—and at hiding her dream of becoming a published author. When a misunderstanding sparks a scandal that links her to Bellamy, St. Louis’s most notorious matchmaker, she does what any storyteller would do: she invents a courtship. Bellamy, under mounting pressure to finally marry, reluctantly agrees to play the suitor—despite coming from a family that excels at finding love for others but seems cursed when it comes to themselves. As gossip swirls, danger looms, and they spend far too much time together, their pretend romance begins to feel uncomfortably real. After all, what happens when a matchmaker becomes the one who’s matched?
I truly think this may be my favorite book in the entire series! I’ve loved Bellamy since the first book, where he already proved himself a gifted matchmaker like his father. And Zaira completely stole my heart with her love of storytelling and her flair for the dramatic and adventurous.
While the plot is lighthearted and full of charm, it also grapples with the sobering reality of a devastating epidemic, drawing both characters into selfless efforts to help those affected. There are several unexpected turns that add intrigue, but what I loved most was the banter between Zaira and Bellamy—and how they stubbornly ignore the fact that they are already smitten, pretending indifference despite their undeniable chemistry.
The characters are truly the highlight. Bellamy’s big heart and protectiveness of Zaira made me swoon, even as he tried (and failed) to guard himself against love, convinced he was doomed to repeat his family’s history of failed marriages. He’s naïve in some ways, brooding and heroic in others, and always a true gentleman. Zaira, on the other hand, is a joy—fun-loving, quirky, and determined. I especially related to her people-pleasing tendencies and her struggle to defend her own dreams, particularly with her parents. Her antics genuinely made me laugh, and her compassion for others was deeply endearing.
The romance is full of sparks and sizzling tension while remaining clean and heartfelt. Both characters experience meaningful personal growth, and the faith thread woven throughout the story was especially touching. One quote that stood out to me comes from Oscar, Bellamy’s father: “Remember, there’s no luck involved in love. Instead, ’tis what you do day after day that counts, first growing in God’s love yourself, and then growing in love toward her.”
All in all, this is a wonderful historical romance that will capture your heart and leave you smiling. I highly recommend it. While it can be read as a standalone, I strongly suggest reading the series in order to fully appreciate the character growth and the continued presence of the Shanahan siblings—it was such a joy to follow them through each book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers and was under no obligation to post a positive review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
It's time for the matchmaker himself to get on board with the romance train! Bellamy is the town's budding matchmaker, but he's finding his position getting more challenging as everyone is slowly expecting him to set an example and start to settle down himself.
Meet Zaira Shanahan. She's an energetic young woman from a prominent family and left relatively to her own devices. She's secretly growing her author career - submitting her work under a pseudonym and living her dream. You can find her sneaking around town, scaling a trellis to research what being a spy might feel like for one of her characters. But she starts to run into issues where her writing lacks a personal understanding of romantic experiences.
This is where it got interesting! Zaira asks Bellamy to help her by bargaining for a hug. He needs information that she has and she wants to make a deal. She'll give him the information he seeks if he just agrees to hug her so can gain some romantic-like experience. It's all for her writing so that she can more effective writing romance scenes. But this bargain turned into a lot more than either of them expected. Bellamy takes the information and then doesn't help her, so she shows up at his family's pub and kisses him in front of everyone. Which quickly turns into strong rumors and their stuck in a difficult position.
I think what I loved so much about their dynamic was that Bellamy was actually already deeply smitten for Zaira from the very beginning. But he's refused to ever let it show because he believes his family is cursed with relationships and that she deserves someone much more than himself. Zaira on the other hand seems more honest with herself in that she regularly admits that he's handsome, but she could never see herself being with him.
Now they're caught inside of an even bigger challenge because their parents match them and they must court publicly now. But they are both pretending it's all a rouse so they can get the rumors to calm down and then they will go their separate ways.
However, the tension keeps rising. The more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to deny those feelings that are growing for both of them.
A beautiful and faith filled journey that I couldn't have loved more if I wanted to. Zaira and Bellamy are a great representation of the Irish immigrant community and you also get to see quite a bit of what those communities struggled with during this time.
✨Spoiler-free Book Review✨ Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Thank you to Baker Publishing Group for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own! Releases 2/3/2026
I didn’t realize this was book four in a series when I received it, but I was still able to read and enjoy it without feeling lost. That said, I do think there are some mild spoilers for the earlier books, so if you’re planning to read the whole series, I’d recommend starting from the beginning. 😅
This story follows Bellamy and Zaira - two secret artists who happen to know each other’s closely guarded truths. When a scandal threatens their reputations, they enter into a fake courting arrangement to let things settle… even though their feelings are painfully obvious to everyone but themselves. 🤭
This was such a fun read! Bellamy’s honor, kindness, and deep care for others made him incredibly admirable, while Zaira completely stole my heart with her wit and boldness. She’s confident, driven, and not afraid to go after what she wants - a dynamic I enjoy in a heroine! 🙌
The chemistry was strong, but I especially appreciated the gentle faith thread woven throughout the story. Rather than heavy scripture quotes, the book focuses on lived-out faith: caring for the sick and orphaned, lessons on choosing honesty even when lying would be easier, and living in a way that glorifies God. ☺️✝️
The pacing was consistent and enjoyable. A few plot moments felt a little unexpected or random, but honestly - I was happy to go along for the ride. 😂
This wasn’t a life-changing romance for me, but it was genuinely fun and cute! I’d happily recommend it if you enjoy fake courting or obvious mutual pining. 😆
I also deeply appreciated the discussion around breaking generational cycles - the reminder that just because our families lived one way doesn’t mean we’re destined for the same outcome!!! ❤️
Overall, this was a joyful, trope-filled story that made for a really pleasant read! 😉
I may circle back to the first three books someday, once this one isn’t quite so fresh in my mind due to the spoilers 😆

What happens when the matchmaker meets his match? All the love for Marrying the Matchmaker! Bellamy’s story is finally here, & I adored watching this cheeky matchmaker fall in love. Reluctant to fall, a fake relationship, childhood friends-to-lovers, witty banter, delicious tension, sizzling kisses, & a cozy Irish community made this the perfect ending to the series.
Bellamy McKenna’s successful matches prove he’s nearly ready to take over his father’s matchmaking business—except his latest assignment is proving difficult. With a prominent senator’s daughter involved, the stakes couldn’t be higher. When Zaira Shanahan—the maddeningly attractive woman who knows far too many of his secrets—offers help in exchange for a favor, Bellamy reluctantly agrees. But when a hug turns into a kiss in his father’s pub, Bellamy becomes the unwitting subject of his own matchmaking.
Zaira has always had a thing for Bellamy, ever since he rescued her as a child, even if the frustrating man acts like he can’t stand her. She knows his secrets, & he knows one of hers—she secretly writes stories for the newspaper. Needing real romantic experience to bring more feeling to her work, Zaira strikes a deal: her insider knowledge in exchange for a hug… or a kiss. That first passionate kiss leads to a fake courtship meant to protect Zaira’s reputation & Bellamy’s future. Bellamy believes his family is cursed in love, & Zaira refuses to give up her writing & independence—but will they overcome their stubbornness to admit what everyone else already knows?
I loved this story so much! The banter, sizzling chemistry, & finally learning all of Bellamy’s secrets - sheer perfection. I adored Bellamy & Zaira’s love/hate dynamic & how both are afraid to reveal their true passions—painting & writing. Watching them build each other up & find the courage to share their talents was everything.
Zaira’s escapades lead them into dangerous situations. Loved seeing their walls come down when they become trapped in a bank. Bellamy’s final grand gesture had me smiling from ear to ear.
Highly recommend this swoon-worthy romance! I received an advanced copy from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.
Make sure you start with book one and do yourself a favor and read this entire series. Jody Hedlund has done it again with this series, you fall in love with the Shanahan family from the very beginning.
Once I read that this book would be about Bellamy’s match I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book.
Zaira Shanahan who is the middle Shanahan child and aspiring to become a writer, hides her identity on her stories. All her secret publishing is going to plan, but she’s gotten feedback that she needs more emotion in her story. But she doesn’t know where to start, because she’s never had any real life love experience.
Bellamy Mckenna, a friend and someone she has secretly admired for years, knows all about her secret writing strikes a deal with her. She will help him with a match he is desperate to make for a client, and to prove to his father and the community he is a good matchmaker and in return will help her with research for her story.
After a public kiss they share, both families are pushing to match them together, Bellamy and Zaira both agree to fake the match to make their families happy, and that it will only be a temporary thing. They are both fighting a real connection to each other, and refuse to admit it. Bellamy is scared to have a marriage that would fail, all the while he is falling head over heels for Zaira. On the other hand Zaira is sure of her love for Bellamy but becomes weary of his constant rejection.
The tension and chemistry throughout the book makes it so hard to put down.
They both have secrets and insecurities they want to hide, but will confiding in each other put an end to all their questions? Will they realize they are perfect for each other in every way?
I also loved some other historical topics going on behind the scenes in this book. The hardships of the cholera epidemic and orphaned children on the streets of St. Louis.
This was a great ending to a wonderful series. You can read this book alone, but will more greatly be enjoyed by reading the entire series.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from Jody Hedlund. The opinions in my review are entirely my own.
Warning: If you’re going to start Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund, make time—because you won’t want to put this book down. :)
Zaira Shanahan is an aspiring writer. She’s submitted a story and received feedback that she was close. So close, but the editor said she needed more realistic emotion. The kind she hasn’t yet experienced in her nineteen years.
That’s where Bellamy McKenna comes in. He’s helped her older sisters and brother find love through his matchmaking, but Zaira isn’t interested in being matched, at least not yet. Even if she finds Bellamy charming and handsome, all she really wants is his help to experience emotions she can write about. A kiss or maybe just a hug, something to help her bring more feeling to her stories. But first, she has to convince him to help her.
Bellamy is still trying to prove himself to his father and the community. He’s had two successful matches, but with his latest job, the father has given him one week to find a suitable match for his daughter. Zaira offers to help, but she wants something in return. The problem is that what she’s asking for isn’t exactly proper. But it might be just a little too tempting to turn down.
I have to be honest, I’ve been waiting for Bellamy’s story since the beginning. To be a truly great matchmaker, Bellamy had to find his own match even though he fears that, like the McKennas who came before him, he’s doomed to fail. And boy, did he ever in Zaira.
Both Bellamy and Zaira have dreams that the world tells them they can’t accomplish, but in each other, they find encouragement, support, and the kind of connection that allows them to grow into their best selves. Their respect for one another builds as the story goes on, and watching them fall in love was such a joy. I highly recommend this book!
While you can read this book as a stand-alone book, it is most rewarding to read it after the first three.
