In "A Guide to the Complex", Rabbi Shlomo Brody presents over 130 of the most provocative, controversial topics in Jewish law today. The book’s concise, articulate essays, based on the author’s popular “Ask the Rabbi” column in The Jerusalem Post, cite sources and scholars from across the ideological spectrum in an effort to increase respect for the diversity of voices of the halakhic dialogue. This compendium of highly relevant essays gives an accurate picture of the legal, historical, and sociological factors that are fundamental to understanding halakhic debates.
My religious observance is very different from the author and the part referring to women were irritating, but Brody does an excellent job showing the differing opinions about halachic issues. It was also interesting to see when he offered his personal opinion about an issue. It didn't happen often, but it told how much a particular issue mattered to him.
Bite-sized but not dumbed-down morsels of explanations to tough halachic questions- what's not to like? Rabbi Brody is an absolute pleasure to read. Can't wait for volume 2!
