After Nijio's ex-partner tried and failed to come between them, and after so many successful cases together, Nijio and Osuke's relationship has deepened. But right as they finally begin to trust each other as partners, Osuke's older brother and sister come knocking at Divine Inspiration! Osuke's overprotective siblings are raring to take their precious little brother back home where he'll be safe and sound. But Nijio might have something to say about that. And just why do Osuke's older siblings recognize Nijio? And what does this have to do with Osuke's powers?
And... their relationship progresses some more! I love how the author doesn't prolong the ambiguity and makes one of the main couple realize right away he has feelings for the other.
As usual, there are several cases in this book, but the most important is about the main couple's past and the potential new villain, a possessive and capricious deity. There's also a short scene with Ten and Takao, but unfortunately we don't see them in their full, dashing glory. Also, zashiki is still the cutest!
This is really slow burn, but the relationship is starting to move forward just a tiny bit which is exciting. I love that Nijio is the one that has feelings first. Now that he's realized it I'm ready for the shenanigans that will come up in the next book.
It just got 1000 times better. Nijio likes Osuke BACK!!! They don’t know they like each other yet, so this is still the waiting game. How many volumes before he professes his love???? It’s so romantic!🥰🥵🫠
The art leans to the unsettling, despite it meaning to be earnest haha. One of the guys is basically O.O the whole time.
RECAP: Siblings come visit, oh they met in the past and that's why he attracts ghosts, backstory, present mirror house, I'll protect you and keep you by my side, realizing he likes him.
This one addressed the issues I was having with the second volume, by bringing the focus back on our main couple, and developing more of their backstory and chemistry.
Either Osuke's family hadn't been mentioned before, or I'd just forgotten - fairly likely - because I was surprised to see his older siblings show up, with an incredible amount of love and support for him. The problem is that Osuke finds this stifling. He'd grown up with largely absentee parents and siblings who were significantly older than he was, so they acted more like his parents. Except for the times when they were too busy with their own lives and studies to keep their promises to play with him.
On one of these days, an extremely adorable 6 year old Osuke dashes out of his house, in the cutest straw hat I've ever seen (have I mentioned I love the art in this series), and falls flat on his face in front of 9 year old Nijio, who'd been sitting alone on a park bench after his mother had shouted at and hit him.
Nijio, I think, was raised by a single mother who doesn't seem to particularly like him and is very frustrated by how destructive and kind of creepy he is. Because every time he breaks something in the house, he blames it on the yokai that only he can see. Except he's not lying.
There should be more backstory and worldbuilding on its way; for now, all we know is that the god of their local land had "blessed" Nijio as a child by giving him a lot of yokai-related powers. They then got very angry when Nijio befriended Osuke and brought him to their shrine, and when Nijio said he'd never asked for these strange powers, anyway, the god took one from him and saddled Osuke with it instead, then wiped their memories.
Their memories only start to return - well, Nijio's anyway - because Osuke's brother recognizes him as the kid who'd rescued Osuke when he'd gotten lost all those years ago.
So basically they're soulmates - quite literally. This wasn't intentional on the god's part; their boss points out that Nijio running off to the shrine to demand the god take the burden off of Osuke will simply make this extremely possessive god angrier and more likely to do something else to hurt Osuke. Plus, Osuke tells Nijio he wants to keep the power so he can keep being Nijio's partner.
Nijio is finally shown to be head over heels for Osuke, with some really nice scenes where he's struggling with his feelings, and everyone except Osuke is aware of what's going on. Osuke is heavily attracted to Nijio and badly wants to be "better friends" with him. But at the moment he's largely preoccupied with the same issues he'd had growing up, where he was never as smart or athletic or talented as his amazing siblings. All he wants is to be an equal contributor in his partnership with Nijio, so until he believes that's the case, I don't think they'll move into romantic territory.
I'm really happy this volume steered back into all the things I'd liked about the first one. Back to being a possible favorite series, because it covers so much of what I like in the genre.
The plot thickens! The story is moving at a pace I appreciate. It's not dragging but it's not trying to speed-run plot points either. Well paced, especially for a ghost story style where certain scenes could have been dragged out much longer if the writer wanted too. It doesn't feel like we miss character development for the sake of pacing either, just a very strong grasp of dialogue and action to keep it moving without sacrificing emotion or believable consequence.
There was a lot of information in this volume, but I think it was handled really well!
*SPOILERS ahead!!!*
The siblings were so sweet, but I'm so happy they were able to give him space as well. Also, that god....I need to have a stern word with them for the way they treated them 12yrs ago🧐
I truly love how we got more backstory about the 2, and how the ship is slowly but surely sailing. So I'm really excited to continue this series!!!
Omds this volume didn't dissapoint. I love their relationship some much, nothing was rushed, it was kept at an amazing pace which was awesome! And I appreciate the fact that Nijio realized his feelings first, it makes me happy.
Please tell me there's more volume cause they've not even dealt with the God of Land or something, and sort, patiently waiting another volume or sequel
I love the supernatural aspect of this series. The romance is definitely a slow burn kind though. I loved Osuke’s brother and sister. And Nijio coming to terms with his feelings but he’s so tsundere though lol
“And they were roommates.” And then there's still another volume on the way!! OBSESSED WITH THIS SERIES!! The story is interesting, as are the characters. I enjoy reading about the types of yokai and monsters they need to re-home (or otherwise defeat). We're rooting for Nijio!!
i can not stress this enough… this is my favorite series rn. i want no NEED the next one NOW. it’s so cute and fun!!! it’s giving like jjk or dan da dan if it was actually a BL but with ghost and ghouls hehe
Very cute, supernatural slow burn. Two people finding their "one". There are some undercurrents of mystery: a petty obsessed deity for one and a fox spirit that like to stir the pot (so cute).
