The summer promised escape. It delivered temptation.
Ford
A summer alone at my ex-wife’s cabin at Pathfinders Lake is just what I needed. A chance to relax, reset, and figure out how to get what I want. Namely, a genuine connection with a man that isn’t just interested in my body.
But in the middle of relaxing (with no clothes), I’m interrupted by the stepson I hadn’t seen in years, and it seems he’s my new cabinmate.
And infuriatingly irresistible.
Dylan
Determined to break free from the comforting cycle of meaningless sex, I took my friend’s advice, locked it up, and headed to the remote wilderness of my childhood. However, my plans for a “celibate summer” come to a screeching halt when the man who sparked my gay awakening is there…and naked.
The more time we spend together, my carefully built resolve begins to crumble and the history of my unspoken longing consumes every thought until all I want to do is shatter every boundary between us.
It seems like he’s ready to take the plunge with me, but is it just my imagination or can we really find a way to unlock a future neither of us dared to dream?
The Key Holder is a forced proximity, age gap MM romance. It is part of the Pathfinders Lake multi-author series that features forbidden romance. Each book can be read as a standalone but is better enjoyed as a series.
Finn Dixon made a childhood dream come true and has worked in the zoological field since 2006. He’s taken care of everything from alligators to zebras, but his favorites will always be rhinos. Thus far, his MM romances have focused on contemporary stories that include jocks (and jockstraps), but fantasy, paranormal, and historical have been observed in the crystal ball of Finn’s future.
In his spare time, he likes watching gay films and shows with happy endings (giggity), playing Disney Dreamlight Valley, re-watching Jurassic Park and Clue, and traveling when he can afford it.
And yes, he likes jocks, but he promises all his books won’t be about them.
Or will they?
If you'd like to keep up with the latest Finn Dixon has to offer, check him out on Instagram or his website. You can also join the beasties in his private Facebook group, Finn Dixon's MMenagerie.
Another great story in the Pathfinders Lake multi author series!
Ford and Dylan are so cute together and their story was so much fun to read. I liked how they reacted to other characters and how they could be open with each other. It was also spicy in a new way that gives you some new takes on spice!
Some of my favorite moments for this couple happen at the lake and about nuts!
Happy reading it was!
(I received an advanced reader copy of this book, it did not affect my opinion of this story)
4.5⭐️ I was immediately hooked into these guys! Full disclosure I’m obsessed with his Olympic series and so knowing this was Ford’s book I was already invested. This book is queer joy wrapped up in a taboo cage!
With that said I loved that even though this was taboo there was just something about it that was more subtle than overtly out there. The slow burn was so good and as I expected Finn’s use of the cage in this was just so freaking good! It wasn’t a prop but truly part of the story and Dylan’s character growth. There was grown up communication and some fun filthy flirting that you look forward to in Finn’s books.
Ford and Dylan are going in my top 3 Finn couples!
With this being set in a series I loved that I could enjoy the side characters and am hopeful they will be in the other books. They left me intrigued and wanting to figure out whose story is whose, but even if they aren’t in other books the guys are great!
I was also a huge fan of the premise of the lake and its deeper meaning to each of the taboo stories being told!
When Ford becomes burnt out from the hook up culture and being wanted only for his body, he takes a break at Pathfinders Lake St, his ex-wife's cabin. Dylan is a self diagnosed sex addict. With the advice of his best friend and mom, he spends the summer at his old cabin at Pathfinders Lake to reset. what neither are expecting is the other man, and an instant commodority. Over the summer, their attraction grows until their roof needs to be repaired, and the man allows these two to see how the other feels. Overall, it was an intriguing read that held my attention. for a reader who is a huge fan of slow burn with a purpose, parts of this felt unnecessarily dragged out. When the heat did begin, these two had an undeniable chemistry and understanding of the other.
The Key Holder is part of the multi author A Pathfinders Lake Romance series. Each book can be read as a standalone but why not enjoy the whole series. This is the story of Ford and Dylan. This is an ex-stepdad, stepson story which I really enjoyed. These two both have things to figure out and end up unexpectedly sharing a cabin at Pathfinders Lake. This is a slow burn romance but the wait is definitely worth it. I would definitely recommend this book and series.
1st person, past tense, dual PoV Ford (38), personal trainer/gymnastics coach Dylan (25), bookstore employee
Although this multi-author series is set against the backdrop of Pathfinder's Lake they all stand alone, characters do not crossover in any meaningful way. Ford was apparently introduced in the author's Ring Trilogy, which I haven't read and I'm happy to say I didn't feel like I was missing out on one single thing.
This was such a fun read! From the reunion scene, which mirrored an extremely awkward encounter from eight years earlier, to Dylan's klutzy tendencies necessitating that Ford carry him hither and yon, and the way they ended up sharing a bed - I was thrilled with everything.
The relationship felt very organic and natural, building on their established closeness and relationship despite not having seen each other for a considerable length of time. I loved the chastity angle and chortled with glee when Ford realized what exactly the pretty key he'd found went to. So good.
Given the promises made in the content warning I was expecting a quicker burn and more debauchery if I'm honest, but I loved the pacing as it was as both men were working through a bit of relationship burnout and taking time to decide how they wanted to proceed on that front going forward.
This series is shaping up to be extremely low-angst considering the taboo nature of the relationships involved. Thus far everyone has been surprisingly supportive. I enjoyed the little Easter egg of the MCs encountering Van and Père from the previous book, The Forbidden Summer: An MM Forbidden Romance while out hiking.
This is a step-dad x step-son age gap taboo romance, featuring Ford and Dylan, and is book three in the Pathfinders Lake multi author series.
Ford retreats to his ex-wife’s cabin for a quiet summer, only to be surprised by the return of his grown stepson—now an irresistible man who challenges his plans for solitude. Dylan, determined to stay celibate, finds his resolve crumbling when the man who once sparked his gay awakening is suddenly sharing his space, igniting a forbidden and undeniable attraction.
From the prologue, I was hooked. This is a high heat, spicy, hilarious, witty, low angst story. I think it’s my favourite in the series so far. Ford and Dylan’s forced proximity turns into sizzling chemistry, great banter, and just the right touch of forbidden romance, making it an irresistible read.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 3 Multi author series MM taboo romance Step-dad x step-son Age gap (38/25) Forced proximity Only one bed C*ck cage S*x toys Accidental voyeurs Mutual pining & flirting Spicy times & dirty talk Outdoor s*x Sneaky squirrels Both MC read books HEA
The Key Holder A Pathfinders Lake Romance By Finn Dixon
Ford is “one Mazda Miata away from a mid-life crisis.” He’s staying in his ex’s summer cabin and trying to figure out what comes next. He wasn’t expecting his former stepson to walk in on him during a vulnerable moment.
Dylan has had a crush on Ford since he was a teenager. He didn’t expect to see him again now that his mother had divorced him. To catch him in a similar scenario as Ford had caught him in?! How is he supposed to spend an ENTIRE summer with Ford ALONE?
This book had it all, sweet moments, vulnerable heart stinging moments, and hot and steamy ones too. I loved the way Finn brought in the Rings Trilogy characters. This story about Ford and Dylan follows the theme of the series. They are taboo and yet not. They spend time together at first in a familial type of relationship and then as a more intimate one. This story is a mixture of steam and intimacy. It is about building something more, something they are both desperate to find. I felt like it had just enough angst/pining to be enjoyable for me. I know that everyone’s angst meter is different, so that isn’t really helpful unless you follow my reviews and know that I cry super easy. I enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover.
Dylan & Ford "Could I be any more desperate?" This book was super steamy and tons of fun to read. You're kept on edge right along with the characters as they stir up each other's attraction and feelings. Both MCs are sweet and fun, and they shared a real connection with one another. Their "stepdad/stepson" relationship may have been unconventional, but each step of their story was filled with love.
Dylan's need to control his urges definitely made for some entertaining scenarios, but I was pleasantly surprised to see his growth and his realization that he felt better with that bit of control, even if it meant Ford held the physical piece (the key). Ford goes into this not quite on the same level of attraction to Dylan as vice versa, but that changes rapidly, and he knows he can't keep himself away from Dylan and his feelings. I thought the pace of the story was really fun and easy, but man I kept smacking my head every time Dylan hinted about the key to Ford, and Ford remained oblivious. It was a silly build-up, but well worth it.
The Key Holder is another fantastic read in the Pathfinder's Lake shared multi-author series. Finn brings his characters to life in sweet and realistic ways. And when you factor in the edging and spiciness to the story, it's a very engaging read.
I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
Having been a fan of Finn since the beginning, his writing ability continues to improve with every new release. His ability to express characters emotions, their reactions, feelings, is something of a natural progression. Nothing ever feels forced or loss of interest as he keeps his readers mesmerized with every new phrase.
It’s always a joy to finally experience a new budding relationship with previous characters. Ford and Dylan’s story was fantastic and filled with so many enticing moments that will leave you drooling with anticipation for the next moment. And, I can’t honestly say I will never look at Chastity belts, or in this instance, a cage, the same way again.
I was excited for this book as soon as I saw it had Ford (from Finn's Olympic series!) and it did not disappoint. This book is mid angst and slow burn but still had all of the sass and heat I love in Finn's writing. This is part of the multiauthor Pathfinders series and while is taboo, it is definitely more subdued. Another great read by a 1 click author for me.
This is another well written, taboo, age gap romance in the multi author series called Pathfinder’s Lake and I really liked the low angst, slow burn story of Ford and Dylan which has just the right amount of sweetness and spice.
I really enjoyed this book from the Pathfinders Lake Romance series! Ford and Dylan end up staying at Dylan's moms lake cabin after not being in touch for the past several years. I liked seeing their romance blossom while being at the cabin for their own issues. I really enjoyed Dylan's brattiness and Ford's caretaking. Seeing them be possessive of each other was also something I really enjoyed. This book felt pretty low angst, and I enjoyed every minute of them discovering and nurturing their connection. I loved their banter and Dylan had some really funny comebacks that kept me entertained.
If you're looking for an ex-stepson/step-dad story that is sweet and steamy then this is the book for you! As a plus, they read queer romance novels.
I received a free copy of this book via Indie Author Creative and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This series is so, so good. I love that each author is bringing a different "taboo" relationship into the series. This one is stepfather/stepson. Don't worry, the stepfather was already divorced from the mom when their relationship evolved.
I think what I really enjoy is just the acceptance from everyone that matters to the MCs. There isn't this whole ordeal that comes from someone not accepting. While it may make it boring for some, others just want to read about people being accepted by loved ones without all the angst.
I also love that so far, each book has included the stone monument and the myth behind it. It really connects each book together.
This one, by far, has the most spice. Plus, an added bonus of kink mixed in. It was absolutely scrumptious and well written. Plus, it has an added bonus of some laugh out loud scenes. At least I chuckled. Especially when the squirrels made their appearance.
I can't wait to read what the other authors have in store for this series. It's certainly worth reading the whole series.
A dash of taboo, a dollop of jockstraps, a heavy dose of tension, a sprinkling of humor, and one shiny black c*ck cage later and you have the perfect recipe for a summer forbidden romance.
Finn’s brand of salacious teasing, jockstrap core, and laugh-out-loud humor is always a home run and The Key Holder did not disappoint.
From the hysterical “caught in action” (twice) moments I was hooked.
Ford, a Thor-lookalike, former athlete, trainer, and coach is looking for more than hookups after 8 years sewing his bisexual oats. Dylan, his twink ex step-son, has been pining for years and is tired of failed relationships.
What happens when they both end up escaping to the same cabin? One with “celibate summer” on lock. A wild ride of bratty shenanigans, mishaps, heat, flirty repairmen, sneaky squirrels, and someone who holds the key to more than just a lock.
An ode to those first crushes that never really fade, to everyone who has wished for a knight in shining speedos, and to all of the a** men/women/thems out there. This one is definitely for you.
Whilst I love the trope stepbrothers, I have not read many that is stepdad and stepson, so I was excited to see how the story would go. Ford is at the cabin at Pathfinders lake to decompress, since his divorce, he has not had much luck in the love department. Dylan has turned up at the cabin thinking a cabin in the middle of nowhere will let him have a summer of celibacy, having a history of picking the wrong guys and making sure he doesn't break his vow, he has extra protection. But with Ford being there, things get interesting. Whilst there was an instant attraction, well with Dylan, he went way back, them getting together was not rushed. Ford and Dylan were perfect for each other and they were exactly what each of them was looking for. There were some laugh out loud moments thanks to some unexpected guests, human and non human and whilst it was low angst there was tension and not just sexual. I really liked this read, reading it in one sitting. I must admit I have not read the series that Ford makes an appearance, but I will take time to read this series
4.5 - This is the third book in the Pathfinders series and it is probably my fave in the series so far! I always enjoy Finn's writing, his obsession with jock straps, as well as his mix of spicy and sweet. This is a low-angst read with an age gap, fun side characters, humor (lots of puns of the sexy kind), and lots of heart. Ford (a side character from Rings of Lust) is the former stepfather to Dylan. Both of them separately decided to take a summer break to regroup at the family cabin at Pathfinder's Lake. Ford is still exploring his bisexuality after his divorce and Dylan decides he needs a chaste summer to figure out where he's gone wrong with his choices. Hence, Dylan chooses a cock cage in order to discipline himself. Whatever could go wrong? Mother Nature also lends a hand in getting these men together, plus add in some lumber hotties and well, after some stumbles and questioning and lots of jock wearing (or not wearing), these men get their sweet HEA. Loved it!
I received a complimentary copy and am leaving this review voluntarily.
I laughed, I cried, I swooned. This was a great read and kept me entertained. Ford is divorced, and has grown tired of meaningless hook ups with men who only see him for his buff body. So he goes to his ex wife's cabin at Pathfinders Lake to sort things out and get a new start. The only fun he plans to have is with the toys he brought along.
Dylan has fled to his mother's cabin because of the bad decisions relationship wise that he's been making. His bestie has gotten him to swear off sex for awhile, so Dylan gets a cage to lock his male part up. Imagine his surprise when he walks in on Ford, the man he's been crushing on since he was 13, enjoying one of his toys. Let the fun begin.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It had so much going for it. Plus maybe, just maybe, some characters from a previous book in this series. I won't tell. Just like Dylan wouldn't tell Ford who's key he (Ford) found.

Dylan and Ford have had a string of bad luck with relationships and decide to take off to the family cabin to reset, not expecting the other to be there, and end up having the best summer of their lives. I loved the banter and flirting between Dylan and Ford. It was also heartwarming to see the vulnerability between them and the healing they both did, even without knowing they needed it. Dylan and Ford have taken over as my favourite Finn Dixon couple and have pulled me out of my reading slump. Ford and Dylan, Ex-Stepfather/Stepson, find themselves sharing a cabin on Pathfinder Lake, as they both hide out to regroup from hookup culture.
Dylan has always had a thing for Ford, and now, when they should be focusing on anything other, he’s spending the summer with the very man. A man who’s caring and competent, and wears very tiny bathing suits.
Over the summer they draw closer, getting to know one another more completely, till it’s not just the sun that’s heating up.
It’s a light read. And I enjoyed both guys, but a few aspects felt forced to add quirkiness for the sake of quirkiness.
Dylan is hiding out at his mother's cabin in order to get his life straightened out after failed relationships based on bad decisions due to his sex addiction. To help matters in that area he has a chastity device. Ford was Dylan's former stepfather and he's tired of people only wanting him for his body. What he really wants is an actual connection with someone. Dylan has had a crush on Ford since he was a teenager and it hasn't stopped. When Dylan arrives at the cabin he finds Ford in a compromising situation that only adds fuel to the fire of his attraction. The tables are turned when Ford finds Dylan in a compromising situation as well. They slowly took time over the summer and actually got to know one another. The chemistry between these two was scorching hot.
I love a good age gap romance, and Ford and Dylan’s story hooked me from the very beginning. The chemistry between them is electric, and the mix of sweet moments, sexy tension, and just the right amount of angst made my heart ache in the best way. The long-time pining was perfectly done, giving their relationship so much depth and emotional pull. A beautifully written, addictive read that had me rooting for these two every step of the way! This was my first book by this author, but it definitely won’t be my last!
[I received an advanced copy of this book. All reviews and ratings are my own.]
So happy to read another Finn and this one didn't disappoint me. It was full of Finn's cheeky, fun, steamy, fun and sweet. Gymnastics and fitness coach Ford has gone to stay at his ex wife's lake cabin for a few months. One day he gets a surprise when his former stepson Dylan turns up. He needs a break from bad relationships and they are having to navigate living together. Dylan has always had a crush on Ford, who isn't immune to Dylan. They are trying to get to know each other again and it doesn't help that the cabin got damaged in a storm. I loved reading this story. It was such a feel good story.
This book was absolutely amazing. Dylan and Ford have such a sweet love story to tell. Both coming out of previous relationship funks has left them wondering if they were enough for a partner or if they just had bad luck in that department. Dylan is Ford’s ex step son and he previously had a crush on Ford when he was younger. Stuck in a cabin these two realize that they are absolutely perfect for each other. Expect high heat, low angst, skimpy jocks, cages and plenty of humor. Received this as an arc for the series and loved this addition to the Pathfinders series.
Ford and Dylan were that perfect warm summer slow burn. The ex stepson situation definitely threw a bit of wrench in being able to express to each other how they really felt and to finally making the move to intimacy. I think this made their bond all that much stronger though. All the feelings were genuine, felt real and natural were and were built together. Literally, Roof and all! Note this entire series so far has been a smooth summer read.
Ford is a personal trainer and Coach for Olympic athletes. Spending his summer up at the lake cabin, he's joined by his ex- stepson Dylan. Dylan is having a celibate summer wearing a chastity appliance to help. Both catch each other in compromising incidents, thinking naughty thoughts about each other, and find themselves wanting and attracted to each other. It's a spicy little number with humor and heart and no regrets. I received a copy of this and this is my voluntary opinion.
Ooh - former stepfather yumminess! Forced proximity, slow burn and lots of steamy goodness! For me, the slow burn was a little long but man, the wait was worth it! I love how chastity plays such a large role in the book! If you like your taboo-adjacent stories with pining and angst, steam and intimacy, then this is the book you want to put at the top of your TBR! I love everything I've read from Finn and his stories just keep getting better and better!
One of my favorites of this series!! I absolutely adored both the characters!! And the fun - and surprise - of the cock cage element was super hot! Also fyi - the stepfather (Ford) is no longer married to the (former) stepson, Dylan's, mom. But everyone is friendly, there is no drama and both characters were so mature in how they handled the relationship! Just loved it!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Such a sweet tale of love. When Dylan and Ford unexpectedly spend the summer together Dylan realizes that his age old crush on the man that had been married to his mom is still very much there. Can he actually have the man he's always wanted? This story is simultaneously sweet and sexy as can be.
The highlight of this book for me was a somewhat unexpected physical slow burn, which fit the characters surprisingly well considering the contents of the blurb. There was some excellent emotional depth and the usual fun touches that this author always includes. A really good addition to a multi-author series consisting of standalone stories in the same idyllic setting.
