Summers always meant a return to the peaceful lake cabin, a special place where Père and I had made countless cherished memories together. Waylon was my grandfather—-not by blood, but by love. We fished, swam, worked side-by-side, and for the longest time, that was enough to satisfy my growing feelings for him. Until one summer, it wasn’t.
I started noticing how his eyes lingered and how our closeness felt different. The tension between us was impossible to ignore, but neither dared to voice our feelings. Then we found the key to the shed. Buried beneath dust and time were the letters of two men—Harold and Elliot—who had once loved in secret, their story mirroring our own in ways we couldn’t dismiss.
As we unraveled their past, our own feelings became unavoidable. But was our love destined to stay hidden like theirs, or could we finally break the curse of Pathfinders Lake?
The Forbidden Summer is an MM romance between a young man and his step-grandad with a 34 year age gap, loads of mutual pining, and a forbidden summer adventure. Part of the Pathfinders Lake multi-author collaboration.
4.5 stars What a fantastic read! I loved Waylon and Van. They had such a special bond/relationship that's grown over time. You could really feel their longing for one another and their love. The slow burn build up to being more than family was so well written, I want to say respectfully done being a step grandfather/grandson dynamic. I was rooting for them right from the start! And the ending... I just loved it! It was the perfect HEA. "For us" "and for Harold and Elliot" swoon! Definitely recommend!
A sweet, quick read with a very typical age-gap twist — and a big one at that (34 years): step-grandson x step-granddad. As expected, the older MC fights the attraction hard at first, but it soon becomes clear that their connection goes far beyond the physical.
For such a taboo setup — both the age gap and the family connection — this was surprisingly low-angst, especially when it comes to acceptance from the younger MC’s mother (and step-daughter). The overall aesthetic worked well, and I really enjoyed the underlying parallel story told through Elliot and Harold’s letters, which almost mirrored the main couple’s journey.
My one frustration with the ending wasn’t about the main MCs, but about Elliot and Harold — I really wanted more closure there. Still, this is a sweet, easy read. I found it forgotten on my Kindle and decided to give it a go, and honestly… it did make me a bit itchy, I admit 😅 but hey — love is love, right? Let’s go with that.
The Forbidden Summer is part of the multi author A Pathfinders Lake Romance series. Each book can be read as a standalone but why not enjoy the whole series. This is the story of Waylon and Van. This is an age gap story with daddy feels. It is slow burn with just the right amount of spice. I loved these two even if their relationship might be considered forbidden. This is a great story with plenty of feels. I would definitely recommend this book and series.
***WARNING ⚠️ The book about to be discussed may be considered taboo by some readers. ⚠️***
E(Van)der has been visiting his step grandfather, Waylon, who he calls Père, every summer at Pathfinder Lake since he was little. Now that Van is 22, things have changed. They're still close, but there's something... different between them.
As much as Waylon has tried to ignore the feelings towards his adult grandson, he can't deny them anymore. Their summers together have always been special, but now there's an underlying tension that wasn't there before. Something that feels heavy and wrong, but so very right.
What to expect...
🔥 One very hot summer
🥵 So much delicious pining

I love Raquel Riley so much, and I'm on her street team, but full disclosure? I was nervous about this one going in. Would it be too weird? Would I get the ick?
I loved it! The relationship between Waylon and Van was so deep and was built up over years and years, but the adult thoughts and desires only started when they were both of age. Also, they're not blood related at all. You could absolutely feel the depth of their connection, and this is also one of those books where the incredible pining is just as good (if not better!) than the spice. I should have never doubted Raquel...she knows how to write a damn book!!
My favorite line: "...romance can only carry you so far against the auditory assault of a man who apparently inhales dreams and exhales thunder."🙃😂
I don't know that I would dive into another story with this deep of an age gap, but this story was sweet and filled with emotion and growth.
Initially as the story developed, I wasn't sure how much I would continue to enjoy it, but I'm very glad I gave it a real chance, because Raquel Riley is so fantastic at writing these taboo stories and developing quality characters built into those stories. Van is a young adult (22), and his Père is 34 years older. They both know there's a significant gap, but they both have had feelings well-beyond familial-like love for a while. Père recognizes Van's flirting and his attraction, but has never acted on his own attraction until now. Their story comes together quite naturally, and they don't really rush into anything by most standards. They give themselves the summer to really explore how they feel and decide its worthiness to endure. Beyond the age-gap itself, many of the rest of the story's elements are a friends to lovers story, since technically the two men are not blood related. There is some angst surrounding characters in the past, but they help Van & Père understand and recognize their feelings better.
I found that I really enjoyed The Forbidden Summer and its characters within. The story was a lot of fun, and there were several moments of sweet humor that just kept me smiling right through.
I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
The Forbidden Summer A Pathfinders Lake Romance By Raquel Riley
Père (Waylon/Cap) is Van’s (Evander) grandfather, not by blood but by love. As time passes, they both start to feel a different kind of love for each other, a deeper connection that goes into forbidden territory.
Van grew up with his grandparents. They were his safe haven. When his mom married and moved them away, he lost that comfort. Now a young adult in college, he’s got a hobby that helps him make money, stay active, and spend time out in the fresh air. When he heads back to the cabin for a summer visit, he and Père fall back into their old pea and pod relationship.
This book by Raquel Riley is a slow burn, will they, won’t they drama. It is pretty low angst overall and felt like an easy read. The characters are lovable and the story is paced to keep you turning the pages. I love Raquel’s story within a story about Elliot and Harold. Their love was as forbidden as Waylon and Van’s. The emotions that both characters felt came through the page leaving me laughing and happy at the end.
It's a struggle for Van to not be conscious of his desire for his grandfather by marriage, Pere. And then it gets worse when his probing reveals Pere feels it too. There is so much angst and strain between them when all they want to be is together - in every way. It's a tease, temptation and finally impossible to prevent. Folded in is also the story of Harold and Elliot, men from the past with forbidden love. I received a copy of this through BookSprout and this is my voluntary opinion.
This sweet slow burn by Raquel Riley is nuanced and exquisitely done. Although lightly taboo (step grandfather/grandson) it is handled with delicacy and will leave you rooting for this unconventional pair. When Van and Waylon find a stash of secret letters in the shed, reading them together leads them to choose their own love over hiding what they feel. The parallel story of the secret lovers in the letters is a wonderful addition to the book. The Pathfinders Lake Romance series has something for everyone. I highly recommend adding it to your summer reading list!
This is part of a the multi author Pathfinders Lake series and I enjoyed this well written beautiful slow burn, age gap, taboo romance between Evander and Waylon although there’s quite a big age difference and they’re related but not by blood their story is low angst and it had be rooting for them to get their hea.
This is a step grandad x step grandson taboo romance, featuring Evander and Waylon, and is book one in the Pathfinders Lake multi author series.
Every summer, Van spent time at the lake cabin with his step-grandad Waylon, where they shared a close bond. One summer, their feelings grow into something more, and a hidden stash of old love letters between two men from the past helps them face what has been building between them.
I haven’t read many taboo stories—mostly stepbrother romances and a few involving stepdads and stepsons—but never anything with a step-grandad and step-grandson. I went into this one with an open mind, as the whole series has me intrigued, and I was pleasantly surprised. The writing was excellent, and the deep bond between the two characters felt tender. Once the dam broke, they couldn’t stay away from each other, and I really enjoyed the story.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 2 Multi author series MM taboo romance Step grandad x step grandson Age gap (56/22) Secret crush Longing & pining Old love letters Virgin MC Giving in to feelings Bit of spice All the firsts Phallic art Choosing each other HEA
This book is part of a multiauthor pseudo-taboo series. This whole series is full of wonderful characters and stories, all set primarily in the same place, Pathfinders Lake, which has its own story to tell. Forbidden Summer is a very slow burn romance between a stepgrandfather and the stepgrandson he helped raise. When his mom remarried and they moved away, Van only saw his stepgrandfather Waylon (Père/Cap) in the summers. Now a man visiting his Père for the summer, with both of them in different places in life, Van can’t help the pull he has toward Waylon, and Waylon seems to feel just the same. But should they give in to they’re growing attraction and this new way of loving one another?
Age gap, low angst, pseudo-zest/tab**, sweet Daddy/boy vibes, retired boat captain and wood carving artist/computer programming student, with a parallel story of forbidden love told through old letters found by our main characters.
Not sure how Raquel comes up with these ideas but I would absolutely love to spend a day researching the nooks and crannies of her mind. Even though, I think this recent one started to become repetitive, throwing unexpected excitement in as a distraction at just the right time was chefs kiss 💋
So, Evander and Waylon???!! I’m beginning to think she has a tad bit of a daddy fetish if her style of writing is anything to go by. The longing feelings on both sides were such an unexpected turn of events, especially with their age gap. Either way, there are so many unanswered questions with this story!!
I love Raquel's writing and she never fails to draw me from the start. I would say check the trigger warning before reading. I will be honest and say I didn't know what to expect from this story but it was actually a beautifully written story. It's an age gap story between Evander and his step grandad Pere. They have always had a good relationship and have enjoyed spending time at the cabin every summer. This year is different though. Evander has had a crush on Pere for a while and would like to explore it, however Pere is obviously reluctant due to the big age gap. But they slowly get closer and navigate these new feelings. It was a lovely story.
The Forbidden Summer completely stole my heart. Waylon and Van’s story hits that perfect sweet spot of slow burn tension with a delicious dash of spice. Yes, it’s got those age-gap, daddy-vibes that make the romance feel a little bit forbidden and that’s exactly what makes it so addictive.
I loved every moment with these two, from the lingering glances to the emotional punches.
It’s part of the A Pathfinders Lake Romance series, and while you can totally read it as a standalone, I honestly think the whole series is worth diving into.
This one is full of feels and I can’t recommend it enough.
WOW!! This is a Book filled with relationship surprises. RAQUEL RILEY doesn't shy away from questionable pairings. The difference is she does it with deep love and context. At first I thought, "really" but as the story gets deeper you can see it. This is a true love story between Van and Waylon. It at some points is hard to understand but it is possible. That's what I love about this genre, anything is possible and done with deep love. RAQUEL RILEY makes it fun, the snoring made me laugh out loud. The trip was a dream come true. I read to escape and this was a surprise and a WONDERFUL trip. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!
What more could you ask for in an age gap book.. grandfather/grandson trope, mutual pining, slow burn, resistance that is futile and a love that truly does shine. Van has grown up now and he knows who he wants and now he just needs to convince Waylon that what they have is true love. This is such a sett and slow burn of a book and I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to. Received and an ARC and I couldn’t recommend it enough if you taboo age gap.
This is a sweet slow, slow, slow-burn romance. I was a little skeptical at first with the step-grandfather/grandson pairing, but the author did a formidable job of writing about this forbidden relationship with great sensibility!
I love Van and Père. The quiet and thoughtful way love develops into something solid here is beautiful. The built-in story of Elliot and Harold is deeply touching.
I really like this series. It's taboo, of course I'd like it. It has a good story and good characters. I know that big of an age gap isn't well liked, but I thought it was still worth reading.
I do think there was a little too much back and forth. There was a lot of "i want to, but I shouldn't." Which sometimes took me out of the story. But otherwise, it was pretty good.
This is part of a multiauthor series set in Pathfinders Lake. This book features Van and Waylon and is an age gap read with some fantastic characters. This has plenty of the good feels and is an overall great read!
This may be a story about "forbidden" love but it was also sweet with the right amount of spice. Van and Waylon take their time developing things between them and it was all worth reading.
This was a really nice story. Very sweet and poignant and several places. Van and Waylon were so careful yet beautiful with each other. This author always has a beautiful way with words. I definitely recommend.
Van and Waylon are the last two people who in society’s eyes shouldn’t be together because of everything from their age gap to the fact that Waylon helped raise Van but that doesn’t stop their love!
This story involves a taboo relationship so please check trigger warnings!
This was surprisingly sweet and tender. Van and Waylon worked well together. I loved how the setting was like a character itself. And the letters? *sighs* Wonderful.
A really lovely story with slow burn and then perfect spice! I really enjoyed how our characters take time to recognize and understand their true feelings and grow together as a couple!
It was wonderful!
( I received an advanced reader copy however it did not affect my opinion of this story)
‘ Want is supposed to be clean. Tidy. You feel it, you shelve it. You act on it or you don’t. It shouldn’t feel like unraveling. It shouldn’t sit in your chest like a secret you don’t have language for. But Van—he makes everything messy. Not on purpose. Well, maybe a little. He’s just... so easy to love. Loud and bright and careless in ways that don’t make sense. He talks to me like I’m someone special. Like he sees me. And I hate how badly I want to be seen.’
The Pathfinders Lake Romance series has included some fabulous authors, and Raquel Riley is one of my favorite!
The Forbidden Summer chronicles a young man who has grown up with a special person who has helped him become the best version of himself. Van looks to his ‘Grandpere’ as more than just a relative. He knows there is more to their relationship.
It takes until he is 22, and visiting their family Pathfinder Lake house, before the ‘forbidden’ occurs. Waylon, Van’s step grandfather, knows that Van cares deeply for him, because he too has hidden feelings. It takes most of the summer for these two to find a way to share their hearts, but when it happens, they are truly blessed.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Van has had a crush on his step grandfather forever. Well, at least since he was 14. He's spending his summer at the cabin on Pathfinders Lake and he can't help flirting with Waylon. He walks around shirtless, he teases, he fantasizes. And Waylon notices. Waylon has had less than grandfatherly feelings for Van, for awhile. Since Van was of age. The more Van flirts, the more Waylon resists because he's afraid.
Van also knows that despite being two quarters from graduation, he's not cut out for an office job. He's an artist. Waylon encourages him. This is a slow burn romance and when the characters finally get THERE, it's well earned.
