When Norman George died, he left behind an enormous legacy. A passionate knitter, brought about by his years in a wheelchair, he had a huge following of fans on YouTube who kept up with his posts religiously. At his funeral, letters to his three best friends, Derek, Bridget and Gloria, asked them to make a journey for him, one he'd have loved to do himself. Norman wanted his three friends to scatter his ashes at the northern most point of Scotland - the Shetland Islands. Completely bemused by the request, and wondering how they would stand each others' company for the few days it would require, the three set off, leaving Bridget's husband Graham at home.

With the violent rocking of the ferry across to Lerwick, the rain and storms that hit, the freezing conditions - they wondered what they were doing. But stubbornly, they continued, taking selfies with Norman in his urn, keeping them company along the way. There was much to do, much to discover, and some friendships to find. Would they manage to fulfil Norman's final wishes?

The Last Laugh Club is my second read by author Kate Galley and it was lots of fun. The three adventurers, all in their seventies, were a courageous bunch. Gloria had an acerbic tongue, Bridget didn't think before she spoke, and Derek tried to keep the peace. Then there was Norman in his urn!! Such an entertaining read, one which I have no hesitation in recommending.

With thanks to NetGalley & Boldwood Books for my digital ARC to read and review.

I received a free copy of, The Last Laugh Club, by Kate Galley, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Derek, Gloria, and Bridget have to spread their dear friend Normans ashes. Though they loved Norman, they detest each other. This was a nice read about friendship, what we do for those we love and lost.

The Last Laugh Club
by Kate Galley

I was genuinely looking forward to diving into this book, especially after spending a delightful day with my mother and her two sisters, all vibrant women in their seventies, sharing laughter and stories. Unfortunately, the book did not live up to my expectations. I found it difficult to connect with the characters or engage with the plot.

In the story, Derek, Gloria, and Bridget embark on a bittersweet journey to scatter the ashes of their dear friend Norman at the northernmost point of the Shetland Islands, a location rich with rugged beauty and poignant memories. Despite their shared love for Norman, the dynamic among the three friends is wrought with tension; they harbour deep-seated animosities towards each other. Their journey becomes not just a farewell to their friend, but also a complex exploration of their fraught relationships, revealing old wounds and unresolved conflicts along the way.

I feel that the issue may have been with my inability to connect with the story, as almost all the reviews are positive.

I enjoyed this book as it was funny at times but also quite sad, as dementia was mentioned all through the book. It starts with a death of a friend which was sad but, after that it brightens up and the story which is slow at times but also interesting as these three friends go on a journey to fullfil their deceased friend's wishes. My thanks to netgalley and the publisher's for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

When Norman’s working life came to a rather premature end, his three former colleagues – Bridget, Gloria and Derek – continued to visit him. Not together though – they haven’t willingly spent time in a room together for many years. And although they certainly knew about his new-found passion for knitting, they had no idea that the word had spread considerably more widely – when they attend his funeral, wearing some of his creations (at his request), they discover his YouTube channel, Norman Knits, had over eight hundred thousand followers. But he has one further request of them – he never did make it to the Shetland Islands, and had a bucket list itinerary he’d like them to carry out on his behalf. And his dearest wish was to have his ashes scattered at Muckle Flugga lighthouse – the northernmost point of the islands.

Bridget used to be Gloria’s highly efficient secretary – but she’s very aware that her memory and concentration is starting to let her down, and she’s leaning increasingly heavily on the support of her husband Derek. When he decides not to accompany her, she worries about his plans for the future. Gloria’s as brash and bossy as she was throughout her working life – and she sets about organising the details of their trip, leaving behind the complications of her current relationship (the latest in a long line – but he was becoming rather tiresome). As for Derek – well, he’s happy to go along with whatever Gloria decides, and he’s still as infatuated with her as he ever was.

The first ferry crossing’s a nightmare – Gloria’s plans to fly were thwarted, and their transport on arrival wasn’t exactly what she’d hoped for either. But, accompanied by Norman’s ashes – and taking selfies along the way to share with his fans – they all make the best of it, enduring each others’ company and following his meandering route to his final resting place. But all goes far from smoothly – they seem to be being followed, the weather gets the better of them at times, and then there’s something of a mishap that sends their plans totally awry for a while…

This book was an absolute joy from beginning to end – real fun, with the most wonderful characters, and not only the trio at the story’s centre who all found their places in my heart. They find new and sometimes unlikely new friendships among the islanders – but also get to know each other again, rebuilding their relationships, and discover more about themselves (and about Norman’s past) along the way. The event that ruptured their friendship is slowly revealed – and talking it through enables them all to look to the future with new insights and fresh hope for the future. There’s a great deal of laughter as they make their way across the islands, but loads of really poignant moments too – and the story moves at a cracking pace that keeps the pages turning ever faster. There are lots of touches of the unexpected too – the whole story is just so wonderfully told.

I’ve never been to the Shetlands, and the whole setting – inhospitable, rugged and wild, but sometimes so beautiful – is perfectly captured and wonderfully described. And, should you be put off by the idea of a pensioners’ road trip, set that aside immediately – they’re all so brave when the chips are down, up for every new challenge (even if quaking inside), and so very determined to make it to the finish line (for Norman, who really knew what he was doing when he set his challenge… but for their own sense of achievement too). I really loved every moment – such an entertaining and heartwarming read, and one I’d very much recommend to others.

Kate Galley’s “The Last Laugh Club” is a heartwarming and poignant tale that weaves together themes of friendship, forgiveness, and unexpected adventures. As my second foray into Galley’s work, this novel solidified my commitment to read everything she writes. Her ability to craft authentic, relatable characters and stories that resonate with women “of a certain age” is remarkable, delivering a narrative that feels both grounded and uplifting without ever patronizing the reader.

The story follows Bridget, a reluctant adventurer, who finds herself honoring her late friend Norman’s final wish: to scatter his ashes in the Shetland Islands. Clad in the vibrant, woolly jumper Norman knitted for her, Bridget is joined by two former colleagues, glamorous Gloria and reserved Derek, each sporting their own knitted gifts. The trio, estranged for years, are thrown together in a battered minivan, armed with too much yarn and not enough patience, embarking on a journey that’s as much about reconciling their past as it is about fulfilling Norman’s request.

Galley excels at creating complex, flawed, and deeply human characters. Bridget’s cautious pragmatism clashes deliciously with Gloria’s bold flair and Derek’s easygoing nature, creating a dynamic that crackles with tension and history. Norman, though absent, looms large as the mischievous mastermind who uses his final act to mend old wounds among his friends. The slow unraveling of their shared past reveals the power of miscommunication and the importance of seizing life’s fleeting moments—a message that hits home without feeling heavy-handed.

The Shetland Islands setting is a character in itself, vividly brought to life through Galley’s evocative descriptions. As a fan of the “Shetland” TV series, I found it effortless to visualize the windswept landscapes, stormy ferry rides, and cozy knitwear moments, which added a delightful layer of immersion. The backdrop amplifies the story’s emotional weight, with storm clouds mirroring the trio’s initial discord and the island’s rugged beauty reflecting their eventual growth.

This is a beautifully crafted story that celebrates the messy, enduring power of connection, coupled with the ups and downs of aging. Galley’s storytelling is both tender and unflinching, capturing life’s realities with grace. I eagerly await Galley’s next work and wholeheartedly recommend this novel.

Thanks to NetGalley, Kate Galley, and Boldwood Books for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I’m not sure who was having the last laugh here as I started the read. Was it Norman from the grave? Was it Norman’s followers watching this trio cart an urn around the rather inhospitable Shetlands? Or was it one of these intrepid trio?!

Norman departed this world but left a legacy. A rather distinct legacy. His knitting forum and then his will. His demands on his former compadres to fulfil his bucket list and scatter his ashes. This little road trip was a test for the trio of his former work mates!

Gloria I didn’t like. She took the air of superiority when it was meant to be camaraderie. But she organised the trio and she had the wheels. Derek oh my, he’s a 60 year old on heat. His admiration for Gloria in their heyday hasn’t waned. Then there is Bridget. A semi voice of reason but her animosity (for want of a better word) towards Gloria proves a slight clouded judgement to proceedings.

That said, their journey around Norman’s bucket list (along with Derek’s additions) brings a level of bonding to the trio. Yes there is still friction as there always would be whenever you’re spending 24/7 with others. But my big question was would they get the level of closure Norman had tasked them with as well as the scattering of his ashes?

Kate Galley has stage-managed a very entertaining read. The Last Laugh Club took me on a tour of Scotland but also took me in a journey of acquaintanceship. I had three people who knew each other to pass pleasantries but didn’t really know each other.

This became a trip where three work colleagues got to know each other but not just the superficial, the real stuff. The insecurities, the fears, the home truths. This is not just a romance, it has purpose! Just glorious!

The Last Laugh Club by Kate Galley

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Blurb

Three former friends. One last request. The journey of a lifetime!

Bridget isn’t the adventurous type. But somehow she finds herself attending a memorial for her oldest friend, dressed in the bright woolly jumper he once knitted her – at his request. To her dismay, she’s not the only one. There’s glamorous Gloria and quiet Derek too, each wearing their own knitwear gifts.

The three former colleagues haven’t been in the same room for years, something Bridget has been perfectly happy with. But when they’re asked to grant their friend’s final wish – to scatter his ashes in the Shetland Islands – Bridget finds herself swept into an adventure she never planned.

Crammed into a battered minivan, armed with far too much yarn and not nearly enough patience, the unlikely trio head north. As the ferry pulls away and storm clouds gather, Bridget begins to wonder if this whole idea was a mistake. But sometimes, the most unexpected journeys can lead to the best discoveries – about friendship, forgiveness, and how it’s never too late to start a new chapter…

My Opinion

I have read a few books by Kate Galley and they have all been delightful – The Last Laugh Club was no exception. Even though Kate has written older characters, they still manage to take us on an adventure. With some wonderful characters, this was a joy to read. An entertaining, heart-warming read.

Following a workplace accident, Norman George is confined to a wheelchair. In an attempt to occupy himself he becomes a passionate knitter, When Norman dies he leaves letters for his three best friends {previous work colleagues, now retired) asking them to make one final journey on his behalf. He wants his ashes to be scattered in the Shetland Isles, at the most northerly point of the United Kingdom. There are long held tensions between his friends and for differing reasons, each blames their self for Norman's accident. As they embark on their quest they learn Norman had a prolific online following within the knitting community on Shetland and beyond, and decide to visit some of his most ardent followers.

This delightful tale is about so much more than carrying out Norman's last wishes.. It is a voyage of self discovery, of old tensions re-surfacing and eventual forgiveness for themselves as much as each other. There are plenty of adventures along the way, not least battling with the Winter storms of the Scottish Islands. The author's wonderful descriptions of the islands, their people and the rugged, storm swept landscapes made it an easy book to 'climb inside' and be swept along for the ride. A very entertaining read!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for my advanced read copy in return for my honest and unbiased review.

The last laugh club was a bit of a miss for me.
I was really looking forward to these 3 oldies going on a journey, but I found it a bit boring. I think I had a small chuckle once, so I did not find it very funny.
Some nice moments here and there, but was a bit disappointed.

EXCERPT: My dearest friend,
If you are reading this, then I am dead!
A little melodramatic, but please indulge my dear deceased heart. And it's not as if we didn't know it was coming.
I thought I'd be sad writing this to you, but actually, I'm not. The last ten years have been 100 percent more tolerable because of your friendship and that is no small thing, believe me. Your visits have boosted me more than you could possibly imagine and I will take my gratitude with me into the next life - or certainly with me into the flames at the crematorium. I know! You don't like to talk about the mechanics of death, but there it is and it is done.
I will ask one more thing, if I may? Two things actually.
Please wear the last garment I knotted for you to my funeral. I can't bear the thought of a lot of dismal colours, and if I thought you would be a beacon of hope in a sea of darkness it would make me very happy.
The other thing is a bigger request. I wish to take one last trip -a journey I wasn't able to make while I was still alive. Would you consider scattering my ashes for me? You know I wasn't blessed with a family in my life and I look to you to fulfil my wishes. . .

ABOUT 'THE LAST LAUGH CLUB': Three former friends. One last request. The journey of a lifetime!

In life, Norman George – passionate knitter, excellent friend and secret YouTube sensation – liked nothing better than a good laugh. And, it seems, he gets the last laugh even in death, because at his funeral, he invites his three closest friends to scatter his ashes in a place close to his heart, the Shetland Islands. But as storm clouds roll in over the Shetland Islands, all of them are about to discover that some secrets are best shared, and that even after death, good friendship can change everything…

MY THOUGHTS: You couldn't throw three more different people together if you tried! Gloria is a glamour-puss with quite a sharp tongue, Derek is a peace-keeper with an unrequited love interest in Gloria, and Bridget is quite timid and frightened that she is succumbing to the dementia that claimed her father.

And Norman has a few more things on his list than the three realise when they set off to carry out his wishes.

As always with Kate Galley's writing, there are some serious issues dealt with in a lighthearted but illuminating way. I think Norman was a wise man and knew exactly what he was doing when he picked these three to do his bidding.

Of course, little runs smoothly or to plan and the three find themselves in some unexpected situations, including losing Norman's urn! Their forced proximity brings to the surface long buried feelings both good and bad as they get to know one another again.

A lovely tale about friendship, grief, and learning to live again.

Not my favorite book by this author, but I still wouldn't have missed reading it for all the tea in China!

I was immediately hooked and wondering what wedge had driven these friends apart. Each character is distinct with both strengths and flaws, with the vague sense hovering in the air that something was wrong . Even the personalities of the side characters were well-fleshed out and you felt like you got to know and appreciate them, too. Yet, it's the trio of Bridget, Gloria, and Derek that hold center stage although the spirit of Norman, now just ashes, is a character, too, in a sense.. Each thought they had been the only real friend Norman had. They're wrong.

Always a prankster, Norman gets one last laugh at his old work friends. They each receive a seemingly personal notice that, if they're reading this, Norman is dead. He has a request. He requests they wear a colorful, bright item he's made just for them to the funeral. They are singled out at the funeral not only by their non-black garb but his assistant calling them together. Norman asks that his once closest friends scatter his ashes. Why are they so reluctant? Well, I'm not telling but that's one of the things that slowly emerges as the plot and their unexpected adventure progresses. Seems that wasn't the only request.

If you like character driven stories with a touch of family and even romance, you're going to love this one While not always likable, I'm betting you'll come away liking not just the trio but, as noted, the role of the side characters, too. The trio may not have been glad to be there but I was glad to be a fly on the wall with them, especially as I learned quite a bit about yarn and how it's produced. The intriguing, stormy landscape of the frequently isolated, seemingly almost treeless landscape of the Shetland Islands they travel through in some ways become a character. Heck, you even get to experience a rather nausea awakening ferry ride or two.

That's all I'm telling. Bottom line, this is a delightfully bumpy road to renewed friendships as they rediscover not only what drove them apart but what brought them together. I ultimately wound up liking them all and rooting for them, even the one I found particularly prickly initially. That's not to say that Norman's last trip was smooth. It had its bumpy, even "Oh, no!" moments, but I'm so glad #BoldwoodBooks allowed me this early peek at a book I wound up truly enjoying. Who know a request to scatter ashes could lead to so many changes and bring people together after years apart. Give it a read!

The Last Laugh Club by Kate Galley is a charming contemporary novel that I loved and read in just one sitting.
The leading characters are all over seventy and prove that you are never too old to have a new adventure or experience, or to learn new skills.
Three former work colleagues find themselves heading to Shetland to fulfil the final wish of their former boss and friend, as they scatter his ashes in a place he always wanted to visit. An old photograph gives clues as to why.
As the three journey together, old feeling emerge. They all have feelings of guilt from one dreadful day years ago, and have avoided each other ever since. Close proximity forces them to confront what needs to be laid to rest.
Shetland is a wild and rugged landscape, more so in winter. The landscape comes alive under the author’s descriptive pen.
We see a character struggling with early dementia. She fears the past repeating itself and doesn’t want to become a burden to her husband. Theirs is a strong marriage as there is nothing, he won’t do in order to support his wife.
Despite what appears to be a serious request, the book is light-hearted and fun. We delight in seeing the relationship of the characters to each other as they interact on the journey.
The Last Laugh Club is the perfect read whatever the weather.

In this entertaining new novel from Kate Galley, readers follow estranged colleagues Bridget, Gloria, and Derek as they reunite at a friend’s memorial in bright wooly jumpers their friend had knitted for them. Expecting to grieve and move on, the three of them are sent to the Shetland Islands to scatter their friend’s ashes and embark on an adventure that might correct their misunderstandings of each other and bring peace to their complicated pasts. Stuck in a minivan with too much yarn and bad weather, this unexpected journey might take a turn for the better in this emotional and heartwarming novel. The characters are the absolute stars of the book, and their changing relationships and dynamics really add a lot of drama and emotional intensity to this charming book. The setting of the Shetland Islands and the beautiful wildness of the location are a great backdrop to this entertaining and immersive new novel that readers will love. Entertaining, emotional, and inspiring, readers will really appreciate the characters’ growths and changing relationships because Galley really brings their complexities and uniqueness to life in this brilliantly emotional story. With incredible details and fun characters, this is a fun and entertaining novel about repairing friendships readers will love.

When their friend Norman passed away, he requested that Bridget, Gloria and Derek go on an adventure to scatter his ashes in a place close to his heart, the Shetland Islands, because he didn't live long enough to make it. Bridget, Gloria and Derek used to work together many years ago and were friends. But the friendship ended, and they hadn't seen each other since.
They do agree to do it, and set off to do it for their friend. After they got started, his assistant told them he had requested one more thing, to find his family, he didn't know he had. They also learned that Norman had a huge following on his YouTube channel about knitting. They take on the task and it is rough because they really don't like each other. But Norman was always a jokester, so he had them on quite the adventure. Will they talk about what happened and why their friendship ended? For Norman, they have to work together to carry out Norman's wishes. It really is a fun read, with the places he has them going, now they are on his YouTube channel, and have started having followers. They think one is actually following them for real, as they go from place to place.

Norman, unknowingly to them, had been the glue that kept three former colleagues together. Ten years ago Norman had a tragic accident that never stopped his love of life and when he dies, he has a request for Bridget, Gloria and Derek. He wants them to take his ashes to the Shetland Islands where he wished he could have gone. It is possible that he was conceived there but his mother only left vague hints and a picture. When they get to the island, he has additional requests to visit certain locations and try to find if he has any relatives.

The three who start off prickly at best are taken aback but Gloria decides to make the best of it and Derek agrees and Bridget goes along under protest. Many protests. They also decide to take pictures of Norman’s urn and themselves as they go the to the various places. It is quite a trek for three pensioners but along the way, something wonderful occurs. They face the issues that had put up the walls all those years ago and start to work as friends together. Along the way there are so many wonderful people they meet. There is romance as well as lots of other delightful things. I highly recommend this book. It is a testimonial to life. Five purrs and two paws up.

Another caper of the older generation, thanks to Kate Galley, whose books I have come to enjoy because they give hope that life doesn't enter a stagnant period after a certain age.
This time, we are on a journey with three old work colleagues: Bridget, Gloria, and Derek. They are brought together by the sad demise of another ex-colleague, Norman, who tasks them with a simple request. To scatter his ashes at the northernmost point of the UK, which is the arse end of nowhere!
They were never the best of friends, these three, so the idea of having to spend more than a few hours together is a bit of a chore, but the trip is not without incident, and there is a bit of soul-searching along the way!
Bridget's character is battling with memory loss, which causes its own issues. Gloria can't quite shake off the persona of the ex-boss of these other people, and Derek is just desperately trying to ensure his friend's last wishes are upheld, along with a bit of unrequited love to add to the mix.
I loved the story from start to finish, and the little twists of mystery and secrets that are uncovered made this a real page-turner!

In order to fulfill Norman's final wishes three of his friends are tasked with scattering his ashes in the Shetland Islands. They all worked together in a small company but haven't been in contact in years and aren't friends with each other. When they arrive in the islands they find that they have an added quest to carry out.
This is one of those slow stories that you find that if you put it down you end up picking it up again to read just another chapter or two. You have Bridget, who is worried that she is beginning to suffer from dementia, Derek, a quiet man who has a secret crush and Gloria, the glamorous ex boss of the company. They also find that Norman, who had been badly injured in a workplace accident, had a very popular YouTube channel with thousands of followers. You learn more about the the characters and the reasons behind their ambivalent attitudes towards each other in a stormy island setting with a mysterious motorcycle following them as they learn more about Norman and each other.

Norman's funeral and wake bring some surprises
As three friends of his each realises.
They didn't know he was in touch with all three
And was a youtube sensation, as they now see.

Norman had left letters for each of the friends
With instructions for them to see where his ashes end
He wants them scattered in the Shetland Isles
By all three of them - that doesn't bring smiles!

Bridget is forgetful and worried, too,
Derek is a homebird and dislikes travelling, too.
Gloria was their boss a decade gone by
The three aren't friends but they'll have to try.

Travelling by ferry and minibus, too,
Brings them together, what can they do?
There are secrets, discoveries and mystery, too,
As carrying out Norman's wishes they strive to do.

New people to meet, places to see,
Journeys to make and friendships to be.
What will happen as they follow Norman's schemes
Maybe it'll help them follow their dreams?

A story filled with laughter and a joy to read
As this intrepid trio discover what they really need.
For my copy of this book I say thank you
As I share with you this, my honest review.

When a workplace accident confined Norman to a wheelchair he took up knitting and became quite a celebrity on Youtube etc with a large following. On his death three of his ex workmates are asked to wear the last thing Norman knitted for then to the funeral. They haven't seen each other for years but their garish jumpers single them out. They then each get a letter asking them to take his ashes and scatter them in the most Northerly part of Shetland- Muckle Flugga. Gloria, Bridget & Derek all feel responsible in some way for Norman's accident. They feel honour bound to carry out his wishes. However Shetland in the winter is not for the fainthearted. The ferry trip is a nightmare and the battered van is not the most comfortable. Bridget is a fusspot, Derek is a mouse and Gloria views herself as a femme fatale!! Can they possibly carry out Norman's request?

This was an using read with some really funny bits. There were also its to tug on the heartstrings- getting old is not great fun!! Overall I enjoyed this book. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

As a fan of the Shetland series on television, I was drawn to this novel when the bookbub blurb described a road trip around Shetland by three seventy-something yr olds who’d been assigned to bring the ashes of a recently departed mutual friend to his final resting place. I didn’t expect life changing literary finesse, hence was pleasantly surprised by how astutely the personalities of these three somewhat disparate “former coworkers but not friends” were described and brought to life in my head. The irritations experienced between the women( one of whom was experiencing early cognitive decline), were relatable, and credible, I thought, and the story unfolded in a good way. I enjoyed the trip around Shetland by the group, and the mysterious motorcyclist added some tension to the story line. I enjoyed this authors writing style and will seek out some of her other books for some further lighthearted fictional reading enjoyment.
( ps: my review is of the book, not the audiobook, there was no icon for the book on goodreads although i bought it on kindle🤷‍♀️)

“The Last Laugh Club” is by Kate Galley. This book follows three former co-workers - Gloria, Derek, and Bridget - as they honor the last wishes of their former co-worker/friend Norman. Norman had a request that his ashes be scattered in the Shetland Isles, a place he never visited but felt called to. The three decide to team up to do Norman’s last wishes - and this book follows their adventures. This was a sweet story, with some interesting factoids about the Shetland Isles and knitting thrown in for interest. If you like Ms. Galley’s previous books, you may find this one a great addition to your library. I found the journey in the Isles interesting, even with the personality clashes. This wasn’t my favorite book by Ms. Galley, but it deals with friendship, honoring requests of friends, and a nice clash of personalities that, in the end, worked together well. 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC!

This is a totally new author for me, and I am grateful for new book introductions from Netgalley as well. I am a knitter as well and quite enjoyed this plot of the dead man who became a knitter after a work accident made him unable to walk again but he managed to make a successful business out of knitting, teaching knitting online, etc using social media and other modern technological tools at his disposal. Very real, but that is not the main story, of him sending some people who inadvertently felt guilty about his accident to scatter his ashes together and developing a friendship from it.

It was quite an adventure, despite them being almost near elderly age, and it was somewhat heartwarming as well.

I don't do spoilers - so highly recommend to pick up this book to find out what adventures they actually met with all the way in the Shetland Islands.

Norman George, good friend, genius knitter and secret YouTuber.
When he sadly dies he leaves instructions for his three friends, Gloria, Bridget and Derek about where to scatter his ashes. The only thing is he wants them scattered at the most northerly place in the Shetland isles and all three take him with them on a road trip in the middle of winter with storm Beryl looming. The downside to the trip is not the weather but the fact that Bridget, Derek and Gloria really don’t like each other very much but their love of Norman and their guilt from things that happened in the past drives them to attempt the task they have been set as a trio.

I absolutely adored this story of friendship, family, love and loss.
It was an easy fast paced read which makes you fall in love with all the characters.
Norman knew EXACTLY what he was doing when he sent his friends on this trip!

With thanks to Boldwood and NetGalley for the arc in exchange for an honest unbiased review.

The Last Laugh Club is the latest offering from new-to-me author, Kate Galley.

While we never actually meet Norman, his presence is felt through the escapades of his friends as they embark on a mission to fulfill his last wish: to scatter his ashes at the northernmost point of the Shetland Isles. Bridget, Gloria, and Derek are apprehensive about this journey, as their complicated history has left them with a strong dislike for one another. Will they manage to put aside their differences to honour Norman's request?

Ultimately, The Last Laugh Club delves into themes of friendship—particularly the process of mending them—along with forgiveness and adventure. Bridget, Gloria, and Derek are all in their 70s, having become set in their ways, making it challenging for them to confront the issues that have driven them apart. Kate has skillfully woven together moments of laughter and tears, leaving me thoroughly engaged.

Kate Galley’s The Last Laugh Club is a heartfelt and uplifting story about friendship, forgiveness, and second chances. When Bridget sets out to honor her late friend Norman’s final wish in the Shetland Islands, she’s unexpectedly joined by two long-estranged colleagues, Gloria and Derek. Their road trip in a battered van is as much about reconciling old wounds as it is about scattering ashes—thanks to Norman’s mischievous plan to bring them back together. Galley excels at crafting relatable, deeply human characters. Bridget’s pragmatism, Gloria’s flair, and Derek’s quiet charm create a dynamic full of humor, tension, and heart. The Shetland setting is vividly brought to life, adding richness to the trio’s journey of healing and rediscovery. Tender, funny, and beautifully written, this novel celebrates the messy, enduring power of connection. I’ll be reading everything Galley writes and highly recommend this book. Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy.

Norman George, knitter extraordinaire and jokester, put in his will that the three former co-workers had to wear the last sweater he had made them (egad!) to his funeral, and to scatter his ashes on the Shetlands. And find his family. And get along. And forgive themselves. The three had not spoken with each other since the work accident that put Norman into a wheelchair. In spite of all that, they do as he asked and more. Fun book perfect for an afternoon.
I requested and received a temporary uncorrected digital galley from Boldwood Books via NetGalley.

Norman's knits sound fun and he does seem an interesting character who holds his friends dear to his heart.

Bridget, Gloria and Derek are all very different and there seems to be a lot of tension between them. Derek seems pretty laid back and happy to go with the flow whereas the ladies are a little more direct. The dynamics between the three is quite interesting and there's history there that Norman clearly knew about and saw a way to resolve. It's just a shame it took them all so long to reach a place of friendship. I think it shows the importance of communicating properly and that life is really short so we should make the effort to enjoy it.

I did like the sound of their adventure despite the reason why it's needed. Seemed a noble cause and an opportunity to do something to bring them together.

Norman is dead, and he has reunited his dear friends with a last request. Bridget, Gloria, and Derek are to scatter his ashes in Scotland. Once all three agree to this quest, they are then informed that Norman wants them to find a long-lost family member or members and give them a ring that belonged to his mother.
Through lots of complaining and bickering, all three will have uncomfortable conversations about what happened at the factory, what drove them apart, and Norman's accident.

Loved this story so much. I enjoyed the characters, their flaws, weaknesses, and their huge hearts. They are very different people but reasonable and empathetic and sometimes a bit off in a good way. And their endings were perfect!

Thank you, Netgalley and Boldwood Books, for this joyous ARC. All opinions are entirely my own.

Following his death, Norman left instructions for three of his friends and former colleagues to wear the last thing he knit for them to his funeral, wanting them to stand out in a sea of black and grey. So they do, only discovering once they're there that two others have received the same request, and when they meet with Norman's assistant, she informs them that they have also been instructed to carry his ashes to the northernmost part of the UK in the Shetland Islands amd scatter them there. And although Bridget, Derek, and Gloria knew each other at work, and each of them remained friends with Norman, they haven't spoken to each other in years. So it’s with a bit of trepidation that the trio sets off in a rented minivan on the ferry to carry their friend to his final resting place, and encounter unforseen adventures, including more instructions from Norman, along the way.
