“—the only thing that should hold us captive now is the very reality before us.
And yet… only the reality before me right now is what I should be captive to.”
Two years since the collapse and rebuild of the once-utopia No.6 worthy of people living as people. Two years after Shion parted with those fateful four words, Nezumi carried forever in his heart as an echo of a promise. 🫶🏻
Reunion will come, Shion.
As it has been two years in the timeline - fourteen years otherwise, since we bid them adieu, the start is very much an info-dumping of catching up to where we find the cast amidst this broken dystopian world. 🏙️ But, once we ease into it, the story aches with longing; memories drew one back into the past so easily..
“If he could go back to those days one more time…. Just one more time, if I could only reach my hand out to you; if one more time, I could…to you….
Shion's yearning was tangible with each expression, each action, each gesture - seeking to reclaim what was lost. 🥺 Matured with experience and insight, keen on keeping No.6 alive and well, carrying the weight of responsibility with keen intuition and determination to safeguard the happiness of all the people born upon this land and now burdened anew by a string of recently ghastly knife attacks plaguing the area. 😥
The suspense and mystery is kept alive with the hints of danger fleeting throughout; the spirit of slight unrest that seems to be stirring, the restlessness of hope and healing that permeates within keeps me invested in this intriguing start to what promises to be a multi-volume series. 🙏🏻 Seeing old familiar faces was also a welcome treat. It's been so long since my time with the manganime, but I have nothing but fondness and love for the characters.
The gentle nature of Karan, the vibrant close friendship between Inukashi and Shion; honestly, Inukashi was such a fresh breath of air. Their biting comments kept the levity alive, while also showing their nurturing and compassionate side to baby Shion, too. ❤️🩹 And so very insightful on their views of Nezushi, sensing the special bond they shared, in fact, to their eyes, Nezumi and Shion fit together like a hand in a glove—...
“I’ll lay all of that bare before you.”
As for the reunion itself... To be honest, Nezushi reunion was not even in my wildest dreams on my 2025 bingo card. But, in the afterword, the author mentioned that she regretted not giving them the closure they deserved - that it felt incomplete. And I can see why. 💌 It was --- I don't think I could have imagined it another way. It was as if they had never left each other's side - time flowed like a gentle melody - slipping seamlessly into how they had always been. 🫠🫠
It was beautiful. It was emotional. 🥹 So fitting, so pure, so unguarded, so perfect, true to their past - the history they've shared - the dance of feelings - Shion's unshed tears - yearning to be closer, but that latent tension simmering. 💕💕 Every minute spent was a minute more I wished to share with them; their unspoken thoughts, the gentle and soft intimacy. 🤌🏻
The fan translators did a phenomenal job capturing Asano's appreciation of the world she's created and the characters we've welcomed into our hearts. 👍🏻👍🏻 I'm very grateful that they were able to provide the opportunity for fans to read a moment we never thought possible. The writing was smooth and very easy to follow, shedding light on the original text that showed their dedication to providing the best context possible. Each word was written with such care and evoked all the emotions of the time and their feelings. 🥺
“I’ve been waiting all this time. I’ve been waiting for you, and you alone.”
The side stories were bittersweet - two parallel views of two pivotal moments of the series- a delicate balance of levity and seriousness that even hinted with an an undercurrent of wanting more. To even offer a different glimpse into one of the most impactful scenes, where Shion is torn for speaking aloud what he wishes from Nezumi - 'I want you by my side, and I want to be at yours - or at the very least have him promise of with words left unspoken. 🩶🤍
if you were to tell me this was a fanfic i would believe it because what do you mean in the year 2025 we got a nezushi reunion & confession with multiple kiss scenes? straight out of the no. 6 post canon hurt/comfort nezumi/shion tag but better because after 14 years it’s finally canon 🤌🏻

(e-book) Shoutout to the amazing fans translating these novels. You’re truly heroes. This was so beautiful! I can’t believe Nezumi & Shion are reunited :’)))) so excited for the next volume in the Fall!
If I could give it more stars, I would. No. 6 is one of those books... that instead of taking you out of reality, reconnects you with it in a spiritual way. Nezumi and Shion are the most human characters I've ever read about. I still can't predict what they'll do or say, but I'm convinced there's a connection between them that i can't yet explain. I never thought they would return, this book marked my life and personality in an amazing way, for so long, and it still has the same complexity and essence as when I first read it.
The political aspects in No. 6 are surprisingly well handled. Many books that touch on similar topics tend to portray them as one of two extremes: either extremely easy or impossible. No. 6 not only uses perfect balance but is real, raw in its own way, and practical enough to be fully understood by anyone. It doesn't confuse readers with technical jargon, complicated ideologies, etc. Instead, it presents problems simply so that everyone has the opportunity to understand the issue and think about "What would I do in this situation?" Clever.
The characters have well-defined characteristics, real personalities, not contrived or artificial. Asano isn't afraid that her characters won't appeal to everyone; she portrays them as if they were someone real. With weaknesses and strengths. That's why Shion and Nezumi are so relatable to all of us; because they are a living example of the complexity of human beings.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from this volume:
**How many babies and tiny kids do you think I’ve buried up ’til now? The bodies of those who died on the side of the road, or under rubble, or at the bottom of a ditch or in the bushes, all of ‘em so light you could lift ‘em easily with a single hand—how many of ’em do you think I’ve buried? Countless times I’ve dug up the ground for ‘em, opened up holes, piled dirt on, given ‘em small rocks in place of headstones, and yet, did any of you ever pay your respects in front of even a single one of their endless graves? Did you leave them flowers? Did you pray? Did you beg for forgiveness?**
**How nice it would be to have a logical answer to everything, to live using only one’s head, for one’s heart to obey one’s mind. To let go of feelings that never stopped aching…**
**“Wow, so he gets a grave and prayers for his soul?” said Inukashi. “Fancy as hell. I can’t even believe what a luxury that is.”**
**He had realized something during these last two years: a truth so simple and clear, and yet he had needed a long time to arrive at it. My eyes had always been averted, see—though I had ordered you to look straight on, I couldn’t do so myself. How cowardly, and how very hypocritical of me…I have no excuse.
I’ll lay all of that bare before you.**
Such a MASTERPIECE. Very excited for the second part.
"If I reach my hand out, I can touch you like this. I can hear your voice, and feel your body. You’re neither an illusion nor a memory—it’s really you, standing right here. And that’s…what I’ve been waiting for, this entire time"
writing this review at 12.00 am since i cannot fall asleep for the life of me.
nine years since i was first introduced to No.6, nine whole years since i was first made aware of nezumi's lingering promise—that mf finally came home. to be honest i never familiarized myself with the light novels other than No.6 beyond (which i read a couple years back), but this was such a delightful re-introduction to No.6. the world building and descriptions following the fall of No.6 and it's rehabilitation was written with such atmospheric care, it was very easy to be immersed whilst reading.
the reunion itself doesn't seem out of place, the characters are just as fresh as i remember. as an avid fan of No.6 i trust asano sensei to continue writing the development of these two, and for them to have a solid conclusion in terms of their resolve for No.6 as well as their relationship with each other.
— serious review over
