French writer Honoré de Balzac (born Honoré Balzac), a founder of the realist school of fiction, portrayed the panorama of society in a body of works, known collectively as La comédie humaine .

Honoré de Balzac authored 19th-century novels and plays. After the fall of Napoléon in 1815, his magnum opus, a sequence of almost a hundred novels and plays, entitled, presents life in the years.

Due to keen observation of fine detail and unfiltered representation, European literature regards Balzac. He features renowned multifaceted, even complex, morally ambiguous, full lesser characters. Character well imbues inanimate objects; the city of Paris, a backdrop, takes on many qualities. He influenced many famous authors, including the novelists Marcel Proust, Émile Zola, Charles John Huffam Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, Henry James, and Jack Kerouac as well as important philosophers, such as Friedrich Engels. Many works of Balzac, made into films, continue to inspire.

An enthusiastic reader and independent thinker as a child, Balzac adapted with trouble to the teaching style of his grammar. His willful nature caused trouble throughout his life and frustrated his ambitions to succeed in the world of business. Balzac finished, and people then apprenticed him as a legal clerk, but after wearying of banal routine, he turned his back on law. He attempted a publisher, printer, businessman, critic, and politician before and during his career. He failed in these efforts From his own experience, he reflects life difficulties and includes scenes.

Possibly due to his intense schedule and from health problems, Balzac suffered throughout his life. Financial and personal drama often strained his relationship with his family, and he lost more than one friend over critical reviews. In 1850, he married Ewelina Hańska, his longtime paramour; five months later, he passed away.

The more I read Balzac, the more fascinating it becomes. A couple of the minor, yet pivotal, characters in this novel are related to the minor, yet pivotal, characters in his Cesar Birotteau. It is no wonder that Zola, greatly influenced by Balzac, created a family genealogy in writing his series Les Rougon-Macquart.

Maybe many authors give their characters physical characteristics that inform their personalities. I certainly notice it in Balzac. "His hands, which were short and broad, were of the kind that make women say: 'You have the hands of a rascal.' His legs seemed slender for his torso. In that fat and active body an absolutely lawless spirit disported itself, and a thorough experience of the things of life, together with a profound contempt for social convention, lay hidden beneath the apparent indifference of a soldier. And another: His muddy skin, with its sickly tones of green and yellow, expressed the jaundice of his balked ambition, his perpetual disappointments and his hidden wretchedness.

This novel is short, but incorporates all the goodness and cruelty found in many of Balzac's works. Balzac's personal life was taken with a fixation for accumulating wealth - often with schemes for getting rich quick. This novel is filled with scheming, acquisitive characters, willing to do ill to others in order to satisfy their ambitions.

I don't for a minute think this is a book just the random reader should either pick up nor enjoy. However, first published in 1840, this is Balzac nearing the peak of his powers as an author.

If you belong to the school of thought which holds that Madame Bovary encourages adultery and Othello domestic violence, then you'll probably decide that this book condones child abuse. Just so that you're warned.

Starting Les Celibataires, the first of the series, off with a bang which Balzac again shows cruelty and abuse to the innocent by heartless relatives in his "Pierrette" The horror of the treatment of the guardian's charge is unforgivable but even more so is the complacency of the visitors who turned a blind eye and worse yet used it to their advantage in bringing about malice against the young girl, so the Rogrons will bend to their will. Politics and manipulation for the control of the Rogrons' money, morals turned aside so position in power and money obtained but justice is denied, only for God's judgement being the final justice for those denied on earth.

The story in short - Pierrette leaves her poor grandmother to live with well to do cousins who treat her as a slave and think only of themselves.

I did not read this edition but from a Delphi collection of his work which included the below-which brings us to the very start of this sad story.

"Forming the first part of the trilogy Les Célibataires, this 1840 novel is set in 1827 and introduces Jacques Brigaut, a youth of sixteen years old, who decides to sing in a square in Provins early one morning. Pierrette Lorrain, a beautiful maiden, cautiously opens her window. He has just begun to explain that he is in Paris so that he might be near her, when she hears a window creak and warns him to leave quickly. "

"We must all agree that legality would be a fine thing for social scoundrelism IF THERE WERE NO GOD. "

I was hoping that Briguad and Pierrette could be married but her death prevented that. The cruelty of Slyvie Rogron to the young girl is so unbelievably heartless. Jerome Rogron not looking after this child and letting her get ill and malnourished is inexcusable. Vinet and the Colonel using Pierrette to advance the marriage plans to use the Rogrons without a care for the effect of Slyvie's jealousy or treatment of the young girl. The final insult is when after the trial of the Rogrons vs. Pierrette which ends in her death, new residents are told another story that makes the Rogrons look like they had done nothing wrong. Pierrette's injuries and suffering will be taken up when the Rogrons are taken from this earth and meet their maker.

The political looking the other way and changing of political bed fellows shows the true nature of the nasty game; when Vinet and the Tiphaine faction become friendly it is all politically motivated.

The onlookers to the abuse of Pierrette, not speaking up but letting it continue is too much for anyone with a feeling of compassion.

Brigaut and Pierrette it is sad that they are not to marry because of her death and the Rogrons get away with their heinous crimes against her. Pierrette has lost her mother and father and her mother's parents; she stays with her father's parents who actually entice their daughter in law to stay with them and though her health suffers and she dies from the environment; they wanting the money for their failing business tell her to stay. After the money is gone the grandparents send her to other relatives; Rogrons which are related to the mother by a half sister. Pierrette is sad but brightens when a fellow friend comes to live nearby. Sylvie and Jermone Rogron are brother and sister; quite unattractive and their parents were not too kind and sending them to fend for their own early. They do well in a shop in Paris; the older sister does not want the brother to marry unless someone she thinks she can control. Their father leaves them his house after his death which they fix up in Provins. Pierrette is sent to them. The Rogrons are not able to survive in this Provins because of Slyvie and her brother not making it due to her behavior and his stupidity. The upper class rejects them but Rogron makes friends with undesirables who will use him and the colonel will try to marry Slyvie for her mother. Pierrette is finally called to stay with the Rogrons when they wanted to impress the others. Pierette who was always loved finds out that her cousins are cold. They at first give her all that the little girls have but ridicule her if she ruins the clothes and her visits to other girls stops. They keep her under guard and repress her so much. The celibates are used by the lawyer and colonel plus the clergyman and sister to make Pierrette suffer more. The brother and sister now look to marriage with the people chosen to deceive them. Pierrette is now the servant and getting more ill. After Brigaut came to the window Slyvie had heard him and thought it was the colonel looking to marry Pierrette because she was too old. She berated her and gave her no peace which sick Pierrette became sicker. Slyvie thinks Pierrette and the colonel are going to get married and the colonel thinks that Vinet is trying to have Rogron marry Madame Chargeboeuf and talk all the money from the Rogrons since he is related. Pierrette helps the colonel with cards and Slyvie accuses her of helping him; Pierrette leaves hits her head while being berated and Slyvie says to her guest she is a liar and deserved it. Brigaut has sent for Pierrette's grandmother who has just been given money from the loss of her husband's business. She comes and Slyvie hers and comes to Pierrette's room and sees the string out the window that Brigaut sends up his letters. Slyvie thinking she will catch the colonel and Pierrette but Pierrette holds her letter in her hand which she refuses to let go and Slyvie bites her hand and hurts her. Brigaut and the grandmother come to save Pierrette and a doctor is sent for. Slyvie sees that she was wrong about the colonel and Pierrette when she sees the letters in Pierrette's petticoat. The two political factions are trying to say different things about the Rogrons. Vinet told the Rogrons that the brother must marry Madame Chargebeouf and he will defend which brings the clergyman's sister and the colonel to tell what they witnessed. The guardianship is changed and Pierrette's grandmother watches over her. Vinet says that Slyvie knew about Brigaud and she was trying to stop the affair which of course is false. Pierette is very ill and the doctor, Martener tried to help her and the doctor from Paris to restore life to Pierette but it is too late and she dies. Brigaut makes her coffin as the last act in Provins as an apprentice. He joins the regiment and becomes a great soldier with no care about what harm. Pierrette's grandmother dies a year after her granddaughter and her money is willed to Brigaut. After Pierrette's death, Vinet being the lawyer for Rogrons tried to have them do an autopsy but Briguat stops the insult and she is buried. Vinet does this maneuver to make it that Brigaurt look like the lover who Slyvie was trying to prevent. Rogron married Mademoiselle Chargeboeuf who looks for his death so she can remarry another. Sylvie is not the one in charge of her house no longer but manages the property. Vinet rises politically and becomes friendly with the other faction which they were opposite, Madame Tiphaine. Pierrette's story is forgotten because of the death and delayed trial. The priest tells another story what harm the Rogrons did but the others refute to mislead. Frappier who took care of Pierrette tells the truth but they seem him a drunk. The trial was dropped of the custody of Pierrettte because of her death and no more grounds of action.

This is a very dark story. It has to be a 5-star for being so well done, but I can't say I enjoyed it. And I do wonder if Balzac knew any spinsters who weren't warped?

Nobel alan son on yazarı toplasak bir Balzac etmez kanımca.

A little gem from Balzac, one of his dominant theme of stories of injustice triumphing over innocence as a result of a cabal in which the like-thinking enemies agree to pool their resources. The title character is a sweet little Breton girl who is "rescued" from an institution by the Rogrons, an unmarried brother and sister who proceed to mistreat the girl. Everything and everybody conspires against Pierrette, except for her childhood friend Brigaut, who loves her. A very sad story, but one worth reading.

Clearly written by someone who was going through a bitter moment and disenchanted about life... Although the melodramatic sufferings of blameless, innocent Pierrette was a bit too overwrought, all the rest of the story rings so true it hurts. Poor Pierrette, an orphan girl who grew up with loving grandparents and freely frolicking with the neighbor's kid in the forests of Brittany, is taken into the Rogron's house, a pair of middle-aged brother and sister, who have never married, and apparently never known any pleasure besides saving money, exerting power over employees and building a garish house.

The gradual enslavement and sickening of Pierrette is predictable enough and it goes on as expected. The rest of the characters, with the political intrigue, the aristocracy versus the liberals power play and the social climbing is very well executed. The girl is sacrificed not because people in town are evil, but just because they don't care about anything except their own interests and advancement. The old people who want to marry but are afraid of being too ridiculous, the beautiful but poor noblewoman who marries an idiot with money and becomes the reigning salon queen, the judges and lawyers who are playing at getting into politics.... It all works to weave a very real story about ambition, intrigue, pride and jealousy that happens in a small provincial town.

Balzac's genius is at its best when the whole thing turns into a judicious dispute that is smartly spun into political power play. From being a crime victim, Pierrette becomes a pretext for the opposition to get back its power and there is no consequence whatsoever for the crime the brother and sister commit. They actually live happily ever after. There's not even an attempt at Deus ex machina justice right before the story ends, which makes me think Balzac was really depressed by then... Not for everybody, but a must-read for die-hard Balzac fans.

This may be one of Balzac's darkest and most cynical novels. He positively hates two of the main characters, a sister and brother who made a small fortune by running a haberdashery in Paris and returned to their small provincial town, Provins, seeking to obtain a prominent position in the local society. Pierrette, a delightful young girl, distantly related to them, was sent to live with them, and the outcome is disastrous.
Balzac knows (or pretends to know) everything about everybody and everywhere, and he likes to issue grandiose pronouncements about religion, science, history, literature, art, and music. The reader is not allowed to disagree with him. He is an author with full authorial authority. As the omniscient narrator, in total control of his characters and their fate, he is never ironic about himself. He also doesn't display much of a sense of humor.
When thinking about Balzac I often compare him in my mind to another incredibly prolific novelist, the genial Anthony Trollope. I think I would enjoy Trollope's company (as I would, definitely, enjoy knowing Stefan Zweig). But Balzac is insufferable, arrogant, actually. His absolute self-assurance is an attraction for me as a reader, though I find know-it-alls unbearable in daily life. In order to enjoy Balzac, you have to accept his bluster as part of the reading experience.

“Pierrette” is fairly minor Balzac, with a cluttered narrative that doesn’t always build effectively or hold together well. It paints a vivid picture of family rivalries and domestic tensions, though, and the sad end of the suffering heroine is commendably harrowing. Minor but nicely enough done to be worth reading.
